- Clay is more abrasive than slick grass, so you'll get more spin when your serves, volleys, or groundstrokes hit the ground on the other side. The slower gameplay also means your body doesn't feel the impact of tennis balls on your racket quite as hard, so you can play longer.

Clay court player here. We have a big tradition in the Czech Republic when it comes to clay courts and I can say that the quality of our courts is very good to exceptional in most clubs. Playing on clay is beautiful and brutal at the same time. Especially during summer when the courts dry out, you need to change your play during a match because the court has it's own "life cycle" for every hour that's played on. The pace and bounce is changing also depending on ball quality etc. Personally I like dry condition better than humid, it gives me the opportunity to play faster. Humid clay is very slow and the rallies never end.
Sliding on clay is the most thrilling thing. It takes time to learn. You have to trust your body and your shoes. Just run, don't break and try to slide like on ice. Put pressure on your foot and don't let it go anywhere. If the court is well prepared, hard enough, you will slide on it very easily. It's just about the right technique. You have to "swing your leg" forward and let it go. Like when hitting a ball with your racket. Don't break the movement, just let your foot go put pressure/tension on your lover body to stabilize the slide.
Clay is brutal, rallies neverending and great physique is very often the most crucial thing to win a match. Playing on hard court is a lot easier (and feels boring) but I wouldn't change it for clay. Clay is just special and also more creative surface in my opinion. Dropshots for example play major role on clay. Once you try a good clay court, you will love it. Look at some of my videos, I play on excellent clay courts most of the time. Feels like a hardcourt with clay on it, hard, yet slippery and quite fast.
I live in Argentina and 95% of courts here are clay. Ball bounce is a nightmare, more so if courts are/have not "professional level maintenance/built" ... You just have to expect anything from the ball bounce, like it has a rabbit inside. Playing on hard court is so much easier on that regard. And also true is easier on body, as long as the court surface is even 😅😂. And sliding is so much fun, comes naturally to me.
The sliding on clay never comes easy for me. I need to practice it. There’s some good how-to videos on YT so maybe I’ll practice with my clay court shoes soon!
I’m still figuring out how to slide effectively on clay too. Let me know how it goes!
