- Step by step; simple to build cargo drawer system for Toyota, Jeep, Truck Bed, any SUV. No woodworking experience, expensive tools needed! You can build it yourself, and it’s affordable!
This homemade drawer setup is a perfect alternative to those expensive, commercially made truck bed drawers. Easy to construct, this rear storage setup can be built in a weekend.

Don't forget the wood glue and Loctite. And steal a bar of soap out of the bathroom.

It's funny I watched this. I've been a custom cabinet maker for 42 years. Building mostly kitchens for multi million dollar homes in so Calif beach area. But I like you guys that much. Great job Mark. Love how simple you keep it for do it yourselfers

Loved the video but I come from generation who went thru uk metric conversion in 1965 so I use both systems😄 anything below an inch I use millimetres, works for me as I cannot imagine 1/8 or 1/16

Hi guys - hope you’re Covid safe up there in the US - a great detailed video with tips to help great looking drawers - I am building clothes drawers for my Aluminium canopy fit out for my Toyota Hilux ute (you probably call them ‘trucks’) here in South Australia so I will use your guidance but convert to metric - I also measure three times and glue, nail and screw - I am using drawer slides with locking front levers to avoid slide out when parking on inlines, locking nuts and countersunk screws will finish off with carpet outside - take care John in SA

Thanks for doing this guys! I've been wanting to do something like this for my 2016 4Runner. I have wood working skills but not in the cabinet and drawer department. This will help a lot.
Another tip is to make all your panel cuts from the back side so there will be no tear out on the face.

Very good drawers...very simple... when you do the other one drop a draw divider in... that way you can put the tools and spares seperate and a 6 pack of VB in the front ( bloody handy as critical for spare coldies).. Thanks Mark and Mary.

I really appreciate you making this video. I've been a subscriber for a long time and you guys are my "go-to" for 5th gen 4runner mods. I can confirm the measurements are spot on for the 5th gen 4runner. If anyone out there wants this to be flush with the wheel wells, you will need to go a bit taller. The height, as stated in the description, is perfect to have a Yeti 65 on top (without a slide) and retain easy access. My only criticism is that you did not factor the price of beer into the total cost. Thank you again!
Thanks for the heads up on the measurements! Your comment will likely help many in the future! Factoring in the cost of beer used can vary so greatly that we didn't want to include it. Quantity over time spent, domestic vs import, craft vs swill, and let's not forget alcohol %.
knowing that 3/4 or even 1/2" ply is not exactly those measurements (3/4 or 1/2 thick) do the measurements in the video notes account for this?
I’m curious bc I’m half way through cutting the pieces and I believe the 1 sheet of 1/2” isn’t enough for a 5th Gen build

I own a TOYOTA RAV 4 model 1996. I made previously 2 different setups, but was not satisfied. I am sure this set up is gr8 for my camping requirements.
The measurements are
Front = 33"
Height is = 18" to fit my Marine 36 ice box
Depth is 24". I can extend it to 25 inches to accommodate the 24 inch drawer sliders.

This was great! I just completed the build on my own for my 2016 4Runner. I have the 3rd row so the configuration of my box was a bit different, but the video, directions, and parts list were great to go off of. I went with 3/4 for the entire case because we had the wood, and wanted a bit more heft to it. Made some small mistakes here and there, but happy with the overall build. Thanks for the info.

Everything looks good except for the front face. I just don’t like seeing the screws at the front face. So what I did was put a 1/2inch board to match the dimensions of the interior drawer. Attach that from the sides of the drawer, then screwed from the back attaching it to the faceplate. Making sure I don’t use screws that will go thru the faceplate.

Great video - that's a TON of work! I appreciated the drawer-latch wisdom, esp the strike plate. I've used similar latches, and I'm not a fan - but they are simple and cheap.
Dean J what’s your preferred method for locking similar style drawers?
Mike Rasmussen well, on my current build I plan to use a compression latch from Southco.

This is excellent for us newbies. Will use this to build a custom drawer system for the bed of my Tacoma. Q: Does the drawer slide have to be the same length as the length of the drawer opening? So, if I have a 48" long drawer, does the slide need to be 48", or can it be shorter, like say, 42" ?
Thanks for watching! The slides don't have to be the exact length. With a 42" you'll just have a little bit of the drawer that doesn't pull all the way out. No big deal.
You had 2 different approaches to attaching the drawers : turnbuckles for FJ and bolted base plate for the 4runner. Your explanation for the latter was the weight of the ref.
Would the turnbuckle also work for the 4runner so that the entire drawer/ref system can also be easily removed ??
Turnbuckles can also be used in the 4Runner.

You have now bigger orange boxx rear fold down table did you have to move back drawers to clear orange boxx when shutting rear door via orange boxx I own Toyota cruiser bought front runner drawer and also bigger orange boxx rear fold table. But on orange boxx web site notes before ordering bigger table you need to move back anything 3.25 of a inch to clear rear door with bigger rear fold down table to be able to shut rear door so I will need to delete rear seat on my Toyota cruiser move back drawers. To clear drawers nice viedo
We built the drawers to fit the bigger hatch table so we can still use with our rear seats up.. It does extend into the interior a bit. Thanks for watching our vehicles.

Have you considered doing a similar build but with 8020 instead? Do you think it would be sturdier and/or lighter?
I've never worked with that material before so I'm just guessing. It would likely be every bit as sturdy and probably lighter, but also more expensive.

Really amazing video, I’m following this closely for my build. Thank you for sharing. Quick question, if wanted the inside black, could I just use the bed liner instead of the clear polyurethane? Also if I am covering my box and inside drawers with outdoor carpet, do you still recommend doing polyurethane? Or will the adhesive for the carpet not stick?
If I were doing carpet held down with a contact cement I would first give all the surfaces a thin layer of satin poly. That way the wood is sealed and the cement won't sink in as much, leaving the surface too dry.
Wanderlost Overland I was actually planning on using a high strength spray adhesive, such as the ones by 3M. I think will do a coat one or two light coats of polyurethane though. Hoping it will stick just fine. Storage system about 50% built, your video helped a lot. Thanks for the reply.
Can you explain briefly why the drawer slides are placed .5" back from the front? Is this applicable regardless of the drawer measurements? Thanks!
The slides are a little shorter then the case..
Your videos are the best! Being a 4runner owner I am subscribed to your channel. Just curious though why you mount the slides at center height on the drawers? Almost all the other videos that I have watched the slides are mounted at bottom or an inch or so up. Is there a benefit or does it make a difference where the slides are mounted height wise? Or is it just preference?

Whenever you mill groves in, and drill holes through any wood, solid or plywood, you weaken it. Since there's a dado groove at the bottom to receive the bottom panel, I wanted the holes for the slider bolts to be a decent distance away.
Did you use Dado's on the FJ drawer build? I thought it was all butt joints.

Yes we do. With all the bouncing a nut is bound to come loose with out it.
Only if I know how to measure the wood lol. How much did all this cost you? Can you all this at Home Depot or Lowe’s?
Everything is off the shelf stuff at any big box home improvement store. I believe everything came to a little over $100/

Is there a reason why you chose not to make the base go full width like you did for the top?

If this storage box was built for very light use would you have to still glue it?
The glue is the main component in holding it together. Even under a light load the screws won't be enough.

How many cans of the spray on bedliner did you use to get 4 coats?
Four cans. It doesn't cover very well, sort of blotchy. So we did multiple this layers going in different directions until we got a consistent coverage.

If using all 3/4 IN material, how does that change all of the other measurements for the 4Runner?. Please excuse my inability to do basic math.
If keeping the exterior measurements the same as in the video, add 1/4" to all those on the inside.

My question is would you make the bottom piece the same size as the top and screw down into the sides or make it so it fits in between the side pieces. I tried it the first way and when I put the back panel on it was short 3/4 from the bottom. I don't mean to be a nuisance but cant really afford to make many mistakes and have to start over. That all depends on the hardware (slides) you choose. We estimated the drawers in the video to be right around $100. That's with inexpensive, but decent quality slides. Thanks for watching!

Very nice. I've been researching drawer systems out there because to be honest I'm known as ye of little patience and have not considered the possibility of building my own. Just for sh#ts & giggles how much would you charge for building out this box for my 4runner? Just kidding, who knows I may attempt this project after I up my blood pressure meds. Seriously though great job on this project.

You'd likely be shocked at how many requests we get for manufacturing things we build/fabricate in our videos. LOL We made an oath many years ago to not go down that road. We enjoy what we're doing too much to spoil it. :)
