30:43 Hey my partner is the author of the Hollywood Reporter article and she let out the biggest gasp when her byline popped up on the screen. This article is probably one of the ones she’s most proud of as Club Penguin was and is her passion. In her words, “I think I can retire now as a journalist.” Just wanted to say thanks for making her night!
I've recently started playing on Club Penguin Journey (for a classic club penguin) and New Club Penguin (for the later versions) and it's been so much fun going back to. One time I logged on to go play Pizzatron and there was a union strike happening out front so naturally I joined. I cannot express how much I love this game and how much its energy is absolutely still alive.
WHAT?! Now I need to play Pizzatron again. I had so much fun on Club Penguin. Do you know if you can still do the secret agent missions? That was my shit in 2009-2010
@@ItsJustValHere Hell yeah! On CPJ you join the old way by clicking on the moderation shield button and then clicking on the symbol again in the menu that pops up. Your penguin has to be 30 days old though. NCP you can just go into the Phone Call Center and join immediately.
@ THANKS! I already did an account on Club Penguin Legacy because it looked like the version I remembered from 2009-ish, but apparently they didn't have the secret agent missions
@@ItsJustValHere I'm sorry I responded a few days ago but it may have gotten hidden cause I swore? 😭UA-cam is weird. Like starfish said, New Club Penguin has them, they're located in the "Everyday Phoning Facility". Club Penguin Journey also has a more classic version which you access by clicking on the Moderation badge button in the top right hand corner, then clicking on the symbol again at the top of the menu that pops up. You do have to have a penguin that is older than 30 days though! Happy waddling!
dont give credit to disney. give credit to the original developers who disney just bought - we saw what the game's monetization would look like if disney had their way from day 1 with club penguin island and it was NOT healthy lol
@@smonkk8556 Oh I want to clarify, even if the other comments kinda did, I was making fun of Disney and the wider gaming industry turning simple and fun things into a money mill made to addict people into spending money.
My fondest memory of Club Penguin was when Rockhopper came to the island with his ship. Me and my friend both tried to stowaway on it because we thought it’d lead to a secret area once he left and we’d get to ride the ship and go with him. Ended up sitting there for hours and having to get off because it was a school night. Next day we logged on and the event was over but we still believed if we could’ve waited more we would have been able to go with him
I legitimately did this. If you stay on the ship when the event ends you just stay on the ship, it doesn't even kick you out. If you leave the ship will suddenly just be gone
@@Robot_Rebel as a web dev that’s the typical response to cached items in your browser. Some are stored long-term and others are set to expire, which is likely what the ship was set to do after a certain period of time. Would’ve been a sick Easter egg though!!!
I experienced the amazing response team from Club Penguin first hand. As a 10 year old I was in love with the world of club penguin and would read their newsletter every single week. And I'd email them constantly asking about in game events, the in game characters, and just stuff about club penguin in general. I always got a response back in a couple of days. Genuinely one of the coolest teams of people making this game, so much heart went into it.
Back in 2011-2012 my school did a thing where we sent letter to a company we liked. It was to practice how to write a letter. I of course wrote to Club Penguin. Out of 25 kids in a class, I was 1 a 4 that got a letter back, it was a very sweet post card, and I still have it to this day, they really did care about the kids and what they thought.
I was a very socially awkward and developmentally delayed child, but I was obsessed with club penguin and have fond memories of emailing club penguin support as if they were my penpals. I always got very kind emails back that answered all my inane questions…
As someone who worked for Club Penguin’s support team, trust me, those emails were way more fun to answer than 90% of the mailbag. The majority of emails were either kids pretending to be their parents and asking to be unbanned, or parents demanding a refund because they’d forgotten to cancel their kid’s membership two years ago.
club penguin did us neurodivergent kids RIGHT !! i was reading and playing by 4 and chatting with others by 5 years old. i genuinely think it's the only way i managed to finally make friends in school since i was an outcast at that point and my only friend had transfered, too.
My parents wouldn't let me get a Club Penguin membership but I'd gotten my first mobile phone around the same time and you could pay for your membership using your phone. I used to lie to my parents and say I needed a top-up and they were none the wiser as I built a luxury penguin pad and became the envy of my school friends.
I did something similar in TF2. I don't remember how exactly it worked but I never used my phone much back in the day so all the money used for my service I used to buy keys and trade for stuff I wanted in the game. It was nuts.
I was the perfect age for ALL of the kid’s games. I played neopets, club penguin, webkinz, poptropica, and played flash games on Disney and nick websites. I remember trying toon town and wizards101 but never got into them. I miss kid’s websites.
Same here, I hit Club Penguin, Poptropica, Animal Jam, the Nick and Cartoon Network website games (FusionFall was the shit), Lego Universe and Free Realms
as a kid I actually went on a field trip to the Club Penguin offices in Kelowna, i don't remember a huge amount but they had a life size penguin carboard cutout, they told us what was coming next (i think it was the submarine minigame) and gave us merch (club penguin pencils!)
My parents never got a membership but one day I logged in to the same account I always had and I was suddenly a member. The Club Penguin gods blessed me
As a kid I stole a club penguin membership card from Walmart not knowing it had to be activated to work 😭 my disappointment and embarrassment when it didn’t work hasn’t been matched
Lmao this is so funny. Reminds be of the time when I got caught shoplifting lunchables as a kid. The dude came up to me said, "What do you got in your pocket?"..... My response? "Uhhhhh.... Yu-Gi-Oh cards....." One of the most embarrassing moments of my life. I'm just glad he all he did was tell me to get the fuck out of his store.
35:44 Disney has been so bad for so many things. I’m a fan of a lot of the stuff they make but their Wall Street mentality requires such huge profit margins that nothing good can be Sustainable.
A former designer/composer for Club Penguin has a UA-cam channel where he talks about behind-the-scenes stuff, shares earlier versions of songs, and more. I highly recommend looking him up - his channel is Chris Hendricks. I only played this game a little bit as a kid, but it's still fascinating to learn about.
I worked for Club Penguin for four years. Disney Interactive had an office in the UK and I was hired on to the Club Penguin moderation team, worked there from 2011-2015 😅 AMA I guess?
Omg! I love watching your mc videos, crazy to think you also have experience working for Club Penguin. Were you a part of the teams that answered emails? Any wholesome memorable ones?
Did Club Penguin ever have to deal with predators or any other dangerous types of people? The filter was so strict that I wouldn't believe so but you never know.
This was my primary method of hanging out with my cousins. We lived in a different city than all the rest of my family growing up and we didnt have cell phones so it was club penguin all the way baby
Finally for the first time in over a decade I can once again brag that I share my birthday with Club Penguin and it was like they threw a birthday party for me every year
Club Penguin was one of the most important parts of my life. I still remember my Puffles by name, the events shaped so much of what i cared about as a kid, and i only got into Coub Penguin after the Disney takeover years so, sadly by then it was already struggling. I desperately sought out any way to collect stuff for it, but, over time, as I've dealt with abusive families and homelessness, ive lost so much of it. I once had a collection of dozens of the irl Club Penguin magazine, and, now, it's all gone. Club Penguin taught me that nothing lasts forever, and, that matters to me
My sister and I loved watching y'alls video! It was a special nostalgic throwback to our childhood! Great sibling bonding time so thank y'all for making this video! Storytime: My little sister and I joined Club Penguin about a year before Disney took over. This game was my sister's (18) first favorite game/hobby (for lack of better words). Our family knew she loved it so much that they paid for both of us to have memberships (which was very unlike them). She is older now and she is quite an artist. I decided to watch this video with her and within seconds of starting she spotted that the background was pre-Disney. It made me appreciate who she was as a person cause it is so her to know that! While we continued the video, we had to keep pausing because my sister had to talk about the most random detail or little fun fact about the topic of Club Pegiun. She continues to speak about her niche favorite details about the art and details of the game that only an artist would notice. I got to revisit the era of little her playing this game and admiring how she grew up into her own person.
i would love to see burbank do a deeper dive on how kids nowadays have no safe space whereas we used to have club penguin, millsberry, trollz, webkinz, etc. or just a video essay about all those kids mmo-type sites
Fucking loved Trollz - its a travesty it never got another season but I never knew it didn’t as a kid bc we had farmer vision (so I was used to missing shows/not watching them in order), so I was just confused and waited so long for it to come out and was so disappointed that I never got to see it; so when I was an adult and had my own stuff I was JAZZED that I could finally rewatch it JUST TO FIND OUT THEY NEVER CONTINUED IT AND I HAD ALREADY SEEN EVERYTHING THERE WAS TO SEE AS A KID WITHOUT EVEN REALIZING LMAOOO 😭😭😭 the website honestly slapped tho lol
this game was super user-friendly to english-illiterate kids! when i was little i lived in french canada and could not read anything in english until i was much older, but that didn't stop me from being able to play club penguin every day. i feel like that's a testament for how much that team cared about making it a kid-friendly place. forever love 2 club penguin < 3
Great video! I grew up in Kelowna, where Club Penguin was created. When I was a kid, my family got to tour their offices. It is probably still the coolest thing I've done to date.
It may not be from a moral standpoint. But from a legal one, it flat out is indeed copyright infringement. If it's a defunct company and/or you're making 0 money from it, you may even be able to get away with it. But if it's Disney and you are making money from it, well... not so much.
@@thedreflacko When you buy something, that thing belongs to you, and you have a right to say who can and can't use it, and what they can do with it. i played so much club penguin as a kid but my favorite thing it's given us is the memes, especially "911 what's your emergency/what do you mean you're being murdered/that's illegal people can't do that"
got a little emotional at 15:05 especially with the pizza parlor roleplaying lol, this game truly was such a playground for the imagination. I was lucky to have grown up with it
Club Penguin was so much a part of my childhood that when I tried to return to it during the pandemic, I had no idea it was getting shut down and just purchased myself a fancy little puffle. Only for what I swear was the very next day for the site to die. I don't think I'll ever be over that, tbh
Amazing video guys! Thanks for keeping the joy and spirit of Club Penguin alive. It really was a special time and place, but don't worry, there are others out there who are working to bring that same joy and creativity into new games for kids. - Waddle On!
If this is really you, Thank you so much for giving us the space you did. I feel more creative and happy as an adult for the time I spent on the site and if I had to be online, I’m glad it was in such a considerate and fun environment.
i'm older than you guys and i never got what kids saw in this. this is the best perspective i've seen. it seems AWSOME for young kids. and i don't think selling subs is a bad thing. i also think it's better than adverts in this model.

I have such fond memories of Club Penguin. My brother and I shared an account with a membership for a while, but it was mainly mine. One of my biggest memories was going on holiday up to Scotland back in early 2009 when I was 11 and taking the family laptop into the games room/library of this 300 year old building, as it was the only place with Wi-Fi. I sat in a big armchair in this absolutely stunning building feeling all fancy playing Club Penguin when another kid my age came in and saw what I was doing and got excited. I remember adding him as a friend, not sure whether he was playing on holiday as well, but I remember hanging out with him in Club Penguin after the holiday. Good times. And I never got banned on my own account, but my friend was playing at my house and I typed the word sex or something and got her banned and she cried. My dad cancelled my membership for a month or two for that.
It genuinely took me an hour to really compose myself to watch this, Club Penguin was one of the only good parts of my very difficult childhood and some of my teenagehood, stopped playing as we all did then came back for those final days, and I played Club Penguin Rewritten for a while too lol.
SAME! It was my really first experience with "mystery" games like that. I never really had a game console, so for me it was a more accessible type of game.
as a floridian i would like to let everyone know disney went as far after their acquisition as putting actual club penguin toys in the parks. i vividly remember begging my dad to get me the secret agent handbook when we were at animal kingdom one time
I was friends with Lance Priebe’s nephews back in elementary school. They both had lifetime memberships on Club Penguin and it was the coolest thing ever. He’s the only person I’ve met that said their family member worked for X game company and was actually telling the truth.
I'd like to add that my club penguin memories are even more special to me now that my chronic illness has finally been diagnosed. me and my best friend had a happy wholesome social life together on club penguin as disabled kids
I swear you guys make videos tailor made for me. Such variety and yet so targeted. Thanks for giving us 90’s-00’s kids some nostalgia to look back on so often!
Does anyone remember when the pet shop unofficially became an orphanage and users would cosplay as kids trying to get adopted? What a fever dream that was.
bro i lived in Kelowna BC for 2 years and i never knew i was in the birth place of the best game ever- I COULD HAVE VISITED THE CLUB PENGUIN HEADQUARTERS
The comparison of club penguin to modern games section reminds me of the topic of the death of third spaces. It’s hard for kids to go places by themselves, these games act as third spaces for them. I lived far from my school friends growing up, so we hung out virtually in games like club penguin, webkinz, and eventually minecraft. I spent a lot of time on servers like Hypixel, but never money. The only fee to get in was the price of the game itself. Easy to swing that
1:57 ermmm actually the lakeside is not a room in the original club penguin 🤓🤓🤓☝ it is a modified version of the welcome solo room from club penguin which you would only be put into once upon your very first login (only from 2011-2013), and after leaving it you could not return to it.☝🤓 the club penguin legacy team made a few additions to it and added it as a full room in their version 🤓
as someone who grew up in kelowna in the 2000s, i remember walking around the ski resort and they had different penguins decorated around the bunny hill
I remember when me and my brother would play, our dads computer was so old we couldn't actually play any games bc the frames and memory was so laggy, yet we still had so much fun. RIP club penguin, only the ogs know what an era it was ;-;
Club penguin had the same story as many other popular flash games. They made a ton of money until flash games lost popularity and eventually were not supported. In response devs try to make a new version, sometimes 3D, and it often flips because a lot of the player base are there purely for nostalgia and wiping progress kills off the dedicated users My favorite example of this is Adventure Quest
One year for Christmas I got a year long membership. I cried. My best friend also played, but she never had a membership. I gave her my log in and I would let her play on my account while I had the membership. God, there was nothing better than playing during an event. The Medieval party? Forget about it. That was my shit. I play on the fan servers every now and then, but it’s not the same. :(
Awww. I relate. My best friend never got a membership but my parents gave me one. When I stopped playing I gave her my account cause she was still into it.
my family was on vacation during the medieval party and i remember bugging my parents til they let me use the hotels computers for guests in the lobby just to play cp for an hour
While watching the first half of this video, I was thinking to myself that it would be fun to check in with Club Penguin and play it for a little while tonight - you have no idea how sad it made me to learn from this video that Disney shut it down. I must live under a rock, because I had NO clue any of that had happened. That game was such a huge piece of my childhood, I literally feel like Disney has personally attacked me. 😭
1998 baby here and Club Penguin was the only place I got to experience what my boomer parents say used to be the norm which was telling your friends “meet me at this time in this place” and then just hoping they were where you had arranged at the right time and then hanging out with them. Lots of nostalgia is deceptive but like the boys said club penguin was a special moment in internet culture
1999 baby here :D There was a kid I had a crush at school and we used to set up dates in the game. "So I meet you at 3 on the dance club, freezer server". He was always there, I loved him so much 😂
As another person born in 1996, this was such a direct hit of nostalgia I'll be in a good mood for days. Club Penguin was the best! Especially before Disney took it over
thanks for making fun little club penguin video. as ive gotten older i feel less and less connected to my siblings, to hear 2 brothers reminisce about their childhood gives me hope that my siblings still care about their memories with big bro even after all these years
genuinely interesting commentary on class because I was the one who could play with a membership and never once considered some of this stuff from yalls perspective
Runescape was my first mmo game, Club Penguin was the game I played with my little sis, I put my allowance into the former while my sis did the later. In Runescape I had my dumb ass swindled by a player who offered to "upgrade my armor" and lost what felt like my life's work, in that moment I became a sad cynical jaded man. My sister: having an absolute blast in the fun safe space Club Penguin provided -I have such fond memories of helping her navigate the membership events and mini games. Whatever you think of either service it's interesting to think how each contributed to our development and sad something as wholesome and thoughtful as Lanes vision isn't available to kids.
I moved from Club Penguin to Runescape at a certain point. Spent a few years on one, a few years on the other. Definitely made the mistake of following someone into the wilderness who promised me free gold at least once. Fantastic games both though, Runescape gave you more wiggle room to make mistakes and take more risks than Club Penguin (you could literally get mugged in RS like you and I did), but at least it never devolved to the level of brand colabs and microtransactions, so it was never actually "unsafe" to play. All you needed was a cheap membership and the world was your oyster, one of the best games from the internet's golden age imo.
@@olympian3 Dude getting your first rune scimitar was the childhood equivalent of getting your first step on the property ladder, you knew you'd made it.
There were many obsessions I had when I was a kid. Pokemon, Beyblade, Skylanders, and Bakugan, but Club Penguin was easily one of the big ones. I spent so many hours playing it on the computer, I was there for ever party, I had as many Puffles as I could get, I got all 3 Card-Jitsu gems, I had the two DS games, the Wii game, multiple posters in my room, and about 13 stuffed puffles that I still have to this day. Club Penguin was an essential part of my childhood and it is something that I will never forget.
as a 24 year old woman, the time in my life that I spent as an active member of club penguin was arguably the best years of my life. It was my peak and nothing will ever make up for it.

Greetings FBI, I am currently reliving childhood through nostalgia 😅, not doing icky stuff. Please disregard all comments. . .Unless you've got a backdoor to the club.
something insane about this video that wasn’t brought up at all is that disney actually *had* a big club penguin style mmo that they shut down a year before they announced the purchase of club penguin: Virtual Magic Kingdom. it was basically club penguin but you hung out at the magic kingdom and the rides were the minigames, and as a kid who was raised in orlando i LOVED it. i don’t recall it ever having any kind of membership though, which is likely why it ended up shutting down and getting so memory holed that y’all didn’t even know to bring it up in the same breath as pixie hollow

This article is probably one of the ones she’s most proud of as Club Penguin was and is her passion. In her words, “I think I can retire now as a journalist.” Just wanted to say thanks for making her night!
Awwww. 🥹❤️
@@ItsJustValHerethey have the agent missions in New Club Penguin for sure, I don’t know about Club Penguin Journey though
31:18 this the first time in UA-cam history a mention of password leaks wasn’t a segue into a VPN ad.

It's wild how healthy Club Penguin's business model and how well it was ran. The gaming industry really got hit with that Disney magic.
dont give credit to disney. give credit to the original developers who disney just bought - we saw what the game's monetization would look like if disney had their way from day 1 with club penguin island and it was NOT healthy lol

@@Pixlriffs THE Pixlriffs was apart of Club Penguins support team? Jesus dude you just get cooler everyday.

Storytime:
My little sister and I joined Club Penguin about a year before Disney took over.
Millsberry! I loved that website!
Ahh Millsberry! No one ever talks about it!

I don’t consider copyright Infringement when the company is no longer making revenue from the copyrighted title.
They didn't even create it, they just bought it, ruined it, shut it down and claim infringement. Greed is real with Disney
@@thedreflackohappening with the muppets :(
It may not be from a moral standpoint. But from a legal one, it flat out is indeed copyright infringement. If it's a defunct company and/or you're making 0 money from it, you may even be able to get away with it. But if it's Disney and you are making money from it, well... not so much.

Club penguin had the same story as many other popular flash games. They made a ton of money until flash games lost popularity and eventually were not supported. In response devs try to make a new version, sometimes 3D, and it often flips because a lot of the player base are there purely for nostalgia and wiping progress kills off the dedicated users

My sister and I shared an account, and one month, as a Christmas present, we got a membership. Most magical month of our lives
All you needed was a cheap membership and the world was your oyster, one of the best games from the internet's golden age imo.

something insane about this video that wasn’t brought up at all is that disney actually *had* a big club penguin style mmo that they shut down a year before they announced the purchase of club penguin: Virtual Magic Kingdom. it was basically club penguin but you hung out at the magic kingdom and the rides were the minigames, and as a kid who was raised in orlando i LOVED it. i don’t recall it ever having any kind of membership though, which is likely why it ended up shutting down and getting so memory holed that y’all didn’t even know to bring it up in the same breath as pixie hollow
Yes!!! VMK!!! I remember the only class based thing in the game were there were exclusive characters things you got if you made your account at a Disney park. VMK was so formative for me.
i have so much nostalgia for VMK and literally no one i talk to has ever heard of it
I’m so glad to see other people still remember VMK! It wasn’t as popular, but it was my favorite.
there is also a fan recreation of VMK that is VERY active with huge events every month a new theme
no but really the soul reason i would always come back to club penguin was the super secret agent stuff
Burbank never misses.
Do you guys remember Clone Wars Adventures? What a time to be alive
Not only was club penguin the coolest and most fun childrens game at the time, it was also how a lot of other kids and I learned English. Doing the spy missions on club penguin, and asking for help from my mom when I didn‘t understand words, are not only fond memories for me now, but it‘s also how I learned a new language at age 7 by having fun with it. ❤
