Thank you for that final statement, "If the toxic men being made fun of upset you, look inward." I've been thinking that but haven't put it so succinctly. The show clearly delineates between the types of masculine behaviors that are appreciated and the ones that are not.

Leap-Frog here was kind of a mix of two characters from the comics. In the comics, Leap-Frog was a Daredevil villain named Vincent Patilio (there was a second Leap-Frog, but he isn't really relevant here). Frog-Man was the first Leap-Frog's son, Eugene (which is who they went with on the show), and he was a would-be superhero who used his father's old Leap-Frog suit.

I thought it was clever how the ‘female lawyer of the year’ award, which already sounded a bit weird, basically turned into a patronising beauty pageant, where everyone got participation medals.
It points out that not all the sexism a woman faces will be in the form of obvious toxic incels - some of it will present as condescension from supposedly well-meaning people, which can be even more insidious

    • @BenChanNYC
      @BenChanNYC Рік тому +15

I don't think the awards were being given out by "well-meaning people" - they were using the women (also, notice how diverse!) so they could present as virtuous and empowering women. But it was just virtue-signaling for their own benefit. A Disney joke there would've been ballsy, but .... maybe in Deadpool.

Me too I found Jen & Matt's chemistry very charming in every way, and once again it was a subtle way to develop Jen's story through both her emotional journey and superheroic journey...📈 And when she finally finds some nice fulfilment in both, she gets publicly trapped in this whole setup that's meant to make her angry+lose control... 😑 You're 100% right, Jen does one bad thing and that sadly is everything everyone is gonna remember her for... 😕 The media and social networks are gonna make it evern worse,...etc.
Also, the way Todd has been presented to us and appeared in several episodes, might very much be an indication that he is the person pulling the strings with The Inteligencia (which probably is just a cover for other sketchy stuffs)... He/They might even be working for someone even bigger (Emil Blonsky ? Valentina Allegra de Fontaine ? Thunderbolt Ross ?) and has it something to do with a potential Red-Hulk (which is mentioned) ?...
We'll see... But you're right, most of us want Emil Blonsky to be good, but is he or is he not ?... It almost looks/seems too good to be true...
PS : I feel a bit like an idiot saying that just now after all these years, but for some reason I simply wanted to tell you that I find your eyes magnificent, Angela. Very deep, dark & bright at the same time, and extremely expressive (you have amazing facial expressions, btw). 😊 Voilà ! 😃
Ah and I appreciate your before&after conversations... 👍💯 Details and 'meaningfulness' are everything. 😍

(got some real "Carrie at the prom" vibes) I like that we got to see Jen deal with all the everyday indignities she mentioned to Bruce in ep 1, but this is her becoming genuinely enraged and she lost control. If I may offer some explanations for the previous episode. Jen didn't know that the Wrecking Crew was after her blood. The Wrecker clearly states their intentions when he approaches her, how they want to punish her for strutting around and showing off her powers. To Jen, this is just 4 male jerks attacking a woman in a back alley and she scared them off. I don't think she had enough time to study that syringe she got stabbed with. It probably just looked like a knife to her, especially once crumpled. So she came away having no idea that the Wrecking Crew had ulterior motives to their attack, so she had nothing to question the Wrecker about in therapy. And then as for Blonsky, it's most likely that the Wrecker brought this up in therapy, that he got these powers and used them to attack She-Hulk and he was feeling very remorseful. So Blonsky knew that Jen would recognize the guy and be mad at him.

  • @AM-kb9cz

Not gonna lie, I enjoyed this episode more than the previous ones. I mean she did some superheroing that felt like superheroing!
(but the destruction of property... I mean, the asphalt destruction and throwing a car when she could have just jumped in front of him so he wouldn't run away were a bit too much considering she was complaining about her student debt a few episodes ago, how is she supposed to pay for that? 🤣 )
Also "She can do a thousand good things and that's the thing that will be remembered" yeah, yeah she's a hulk. People are a tiny bit uncomfortable around hulks, and very uncomfortable if they seem to lose control. And I get it, I would have gone mad in that situation too, but I am not a hulk. She should have listened to her cousin, who has a lot of experience in this field lol

I think it was more to provoke Jen to lose her temper in the worst possible way at the worst possible moment and give them a real yet false impression of She-Hulk as just another angry, super-powered wrecking ball with an easy-to-press on button.
Now the focus will be on fear, the last thing you want in a profession as intellectual as being a lawyer. It's going to be hard to get and win cases if a jury is too afraid of the lawyer to objectively consider the case...which is going to play into the hands of the opposing legal counsel.

@@thegreatjedi309 Not quite how I'd phrase it, but I think we're both pointing at the same general phenomena.
I see it as being afraid of even being in the same area, let alone a room with someone you're afraid might lose their temper easily and kill you even more easily.
Naturally, that's irrational -- Jen's kept a tight rein on her emotional control, and she's not likely to lose it without some kind of direct threat. But that's what fear is, an irrational state of mind. Something doesn't have to be real or even possible.
So I think this might even be step zero -- having to prove she can be an officer of the court to her peers & the justice system at large instead of a bomb waiting for the right trigger.
Of course, this is all speculation. Jen might decide not to fight a war on two fronts and deal with the intelligentsia on her own and bring them to justice as She-Hulk, then deal with the fallout from her character assassination.
Or she joins the legal team of Nelson & Murdock in New York.

I think some of the blowback of this episode will be the double standard of how women are treated in the workplace. (yeah, I know, no kiddin'...)
They turned the award into essentially a participation award -- had all the women in stage like a beauty pageant.
The big question, will the law firm accept the 'slut-shaming', and actively back Jen in court against the bad guys or will they simply fire Jen because of the bad look in the court of public opinion, and in fear of damage to their professional reputation?
The trend in the workplace has been that an employee's conduct reflects upon the employer, regardless if it was in or out of the workplace.
It'd be an interesting ethical dilemma if she has the opportunity to out the intelligentsia and give them a taste of their own medicine as supervillains presumably having some sort of day jobs.
Whatever happens, I'm sure Jen will deal with it.

0:41 we know more than Jen. The Answer he gave her was likely enough. He blamed his actions on his stupidity, friends and magic hammer. Guys doing stupid $#!+ in groups checks out, no?
I know Saracen kept bringing up blood, but that meant nothing to Jen--just us--Jen doesn't know that Wrecker was trying to get her blood. Thunderball had something that looked more like an icepick than a syringe. More importantly, Jen likely wrote off what Saracen was saying because he believes he's a vampire and he always seemed to work blood into everything he was talking about.
0:54 He could hear the tension in her voice. She sounded pretty threatening when she said "you," and for good reason.
That revenge porn twist at the end was something else. I hope everyone has the empathy they should have for her after all this. Including those online who've been hating on her up to this point. What happened to her was wrong, and we all know it. I don't know how this all ends, but I hope they all get theirs in the end.
Emil's message to Jen, at the end of last episode, about people that hurt you is something to be considered as a lesson learned or something along those lines still has me thinking that he's somehow connected to all this. I don't want him to be, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is =/
Jen needs to be her own hero, imo, but I wouldn't mind help coming next week.

I don’t think that a lot of men realize what the writers of She-Hulk are tackling with the end of this video. Non consensual revenge porn, and a woman’s reaction to it when it is made public. Especially for a female public figure that been sexualized by the public before. For all the light hearted comedy, this is a very serious subject and what many won’t see is how serious it really is.

I have to think that there's some global insurance fund to cover incidental collateral damage when heroes are heroing (sort of the opposite of the Accords).
Also, let's not forget that at the ending, Jen is the victim (on many levels). And, as has happened with other heroes, the shaming is entirely to get them out of the way (incarceration, depression, economics, whatever) so crime can happen. If it wasn't such a trope, Jen would be commenting on how cliche it was. At least her mother's name isn't Martha. (It's not, right?)

I don't think Emil is sus. He's a counsellor now, so maybe the Wrecker dude opened up to Emil about what he did, and that's how Emil already knew Wrecker's history with Jen. As for why no character brings up the Wrecking Crew's motives, I think it just didn't come to mind. Maybe Wrecker has put that behind him and he just doesn't think it's important or necessary to explain himself - you know, don't hide behind excuses, just take radical responsibility and apologise. And maybe Jen, as a lawyer, has seen so many instances of men committing senseless atrocities on women that she no longer thinks there's a point to asking that question. A superhero may realise the importance of finding out, but Jen isn't a superhero, she's just a superpowered woman looking at the world with an ordinary woman's perspective.
I personally feel the Intelligencia's objective is quite obvious once Jen Hulk-raged. The Intelligencia's objective wasn't to slutshame her publicly: Slutshaming was just one technique they were using to rile Jen up and bait her into losing it, which they succeeded. The Intelligencia had the same idea Zemo had: They can't destroy She-Hulk directly, but if they could just bring out the monster they believe is inside She-Hulk, she will destroy herself just fine.

Hey, Angela! Finally, a solid episode! Thank goodness for CHARLIE COX! Loved hearing the theme from "Daredevil"! I prefer the red suit but the original color scheme wasn't bad.
    The legal stuff was interesting.
    The superheroics were interesting.
    The chemistry was sizzling!
The fourth wall breaks were hysterical.
I'm so glad Matt calls her on her BS. She said she didn't want to be a superhero and then right away thinks she's better at it than a pro! I hate that they depict her this way. She's not stupid in the comics!
I'm also glad she finally got her MONSTER MOMENT just like Bruce warned her! She's always wrecking stuff unnecessarily when she's a walking tank! She doesn't have to destroy buildings and throw cars around like a rampaging Hulk. She's in total control! In the comics, she uses her strength appropriately. She's not stupid!
LEAPFROG is a very funny wanna-be in the comics trying to atone for his father's misdeeds. The show made him a spoiled rich brat! At least the costume was spot-on!. Lol.
The thing female viewers should be livid about isn't the Intelligencia's slut-shaming but the condescending awards ceremony that reduced the status of the honor to a participation award that everyone earned. That was supremely insulting to every attorney on the dais! What a joke.
They wasted so much time on this series and now there's just 30 minutes left to wrap everything up and I just don't see how they're going to do it meaningfully. All they had to do was take any nine issues of the 1980s "Sensational She-Hulk" run or 2000s Dan Slott run and this show could've been top-notch comedy with authentic, solid plots.
The host's leaden joke about lady lawyers was a reference to GINGER ROGERS and FRED ASTAIRE, two top tier dancing co-stars from the 1950s. Fred is considered the top male dancing movie star of all time but his co-star, GINGER ROGERS, did everything he did backwards in high heels yet was never as celebrated. It seems none of the millennial reactors know what the he!! he's talking about!

    • @funnylilgalreacts

While you may mean well, STOP CALLING JEN STUPID. She's reluctant and NEW to the whole superheroing thing. She didn't ask for it, was being pushed into it by Bruce, can only get a job because of it and can't have a healthy relationship due to it. SHE'S NOT STUPID.
I suggest you also stop telling female viewers what hey should and should not be outraged by. We are complex and our feeling are complex and WE decide what bothers us. The whole show is FOR US we get it. YOU DON'T. We should be outraged about the slut shaming? Who wasn't upset about that? We are just used to seeing it. Who was surprised they did that to all the female lawyers? Absolutely no one. I've seen male reactor bristle at those moments because it's in their face, WE WOMEN ARE USED TO IT.
If you haven't liked the show up till this point, why bother watching? Why watch reactions?
We know who Ginger Rogers is. We know the reference. ITS OVER USED THAT'S WHY NO ONE CARES THAT IT WAS SAID. It's always the quote used to point out women do not receive the credit we are due. A quote from the 1950's loses it power after 70 years because nothing changed.

    • @oxhine
      @oxhine Рік тому

@@funnylilgalreacts Hey, Angela! I appreciate your reply and input. I enjoy your insights and thank you for your willingness to discuss the series. The reason I watch is because I am a Marvel Comics, MCU and Tatiana Maslany fan. All three have been ill-served by this show. I'm very familiar with the John Byrne 1980s run of "Sensational She-Hulk" comics that popularized this character and was looking forward to their adaptation. The MCU franchise is interconnected and I keep up with all its developments. "She-Hulk" the show doesn't exist in a vacuum that one can just ignore. The SOKOVIA ACCORDS REPEAL is a MAJOR DEVELOPMENT one can only know by watching this series for example. I also was thrilled Tatiana was getting a high profile part and I don't blame her for any of this show's shortcomings. She has done her level best to make this material work.
The fundamental problem with the series that has disappointed long-time fans of this character is that the show has reversed the dynamic of the character by having Jennifer be the focus. As you say, she is reluctant to embrace She-Hulk and everything that goes with it. Jen was satisfied with her normal life and a confident, successful attorney. Her accident has proved to be a nuisance and she's supremely uncomfortable in She-Hulk's skin. She wants to be identified and loved as Jennifer. This is the opposite of how she is portrayed in the comics. As Jennifer, she was an inhibited, introverted wallflower. Becoming She-Hulk is very liberating for her. She embraces the physicality and sensuality of being a glamazon and never looks back. She's She-Hulk almost all the time and, without Bruce's baggage of psychological trauma, it's a blast for her! She's a long-standing member of three superhero teams: Avengers, Fantastic Four and A-Force! All this series had to do was follow the script of any nine issues of either the John Byrne '80's run or the Dan Slott legal run for comedy gold without needing to reinvent the wheel by destroying the legacy of so many mishandled characters.
You are again correct. Jennifer is NOT stupid. She complains that obnoxious men mansplain her area of expertise to her. Yet when professional crimefighters and superheroes give her advice, she doesn't follow their lead but questions their competence. If that is not stupid then it is arrogant and Jen is NEITHER on the page!
I find it difficult to believe that high-powered female lawyers would tolerate their own professional organization from conducting an insulting ceremony that celebrated nothing more than showing up for work. Lawyers love to argue and that gala is guilty of false advertising at the very least. How can you honor the "Lawyer of the Year" when there are 13 winners?
I did not say you didn't recognize who Ginger Rogers was. It's great that you do! Many reactors don't react to the comment or express a lack of understanding. If more viewers are aware of cinema's past than it seems, then I'm happy to be wrong but, based on the content of many film reaction channels, that doesn't seem to be the case. I am not specifically citing yours. There are a handful of reactors who specialize in cinema from earlier decades. Most do not.
Comedy is notoriously difficult to make universally satisfying. I commend Feige and company for trying. I regret that they didn't more faithfully adapt the source material to tap into what made Shulkie a fan favorite for decades of MALE and FEMALE readers. The comic was designed for both and the show should have been, too. This week's solid episode should have been the template for the series but, unfortunately, the show's almost over.
