"shoulda kept your mouth shut!" Such an easy suggestion, yet so difficult for some to comply.

YEP, Totally agree, worked in a student environment for many years and was often asked to induct foreign students to which i refused. I do speak several languages but was not employed for that purpose. I offered translation services at a cost but for some reason my employer wanted this for free because they were already paying me. I was already being employed as a translator by many people and my employer did not realize this job was just a gap filler.

In what universe is it bad to have multilingual customer service representatives? If you can’t communicate with a customer, you lose them. The manager should have told the complainer to mind her own business. I’ve spokspoken a couple sentences in French to get rid of telemarketers.

Of course, it's the customer who suffers.

Perhaps that's for the business to fix. That customer will be better served by connecting with a more forward thinking establishment. Guilting me into using skills that are not in my job description is exploitation. But I will happily do the job IF compensation is given

I disagree. I employed a crew in an English-speaking African country, influding several Afrikaans-speaking South African expats, who insisted on using their language in the work environment, including on the open channel radio and in meetings. Not only could other expats not understand them, but neither could the locally recruited citizens.
I had to insist! UK company in an english-speaking country. Speak english!
Conversely, in a South American country, I insisted all conversation/discussion that was not 1-on-1 was in Spanish.
What people spoke privately or after work hours was up to them.

This is actually a reasonable request on the part of the manager. It is the height of rudeness to speak in a foreign language in front of someone who doesn’t speak that language if you are capable of doing otherwise.
Fair enough though to not offer free interpreting services.

It is also the height of rudeness to listen in on other people's conversations, and expect other people to speak in a language only you understand. Veronica was absolutely right to name and shame that chick.
