All these companies want to hire “part time” but then expect people to be available whenever they feel like it while only paying for the time they actually schedule them for.
What I hated was when "part-time" meant working 9-5 three days a week, and it basically crippled the possible schedules of second jobs because they'd start at like noon.

Literally what it was like working for King Soopers. They denied my request to attend my uncle’s funeral because they said he didn’t count under bereavement and that I would have to find coverage for my shift and come in before or after the funeral to make up work. I quit the next day.
The bereavement thing is actually a federal list so unfortunately that makes sense... the before and after funeral part is where shit always gets crappy.
I was nearly feeling sick while cashiering at one job and got them to relieve me so I could go to the bathroom to go vomit. Apparently several customers heard me doing it for a while and told management as when I came out a manager checked on me. I then started to nearly pass out at the register when one of the managers came over and told me they were sending me home. Probably good that they did that. I was not steady on my feet and had a high fever until I took some Tylenol. It was the flu and I probably gave it to every customer in my line and every employee I interacted with. I was sick for a week and a half.
I saw a hiring sign at a corporate gas station that they were hiring part-time, minimum wage, required availability for all shifts, and no second job. They stayed understaffed. Corporations have lost their minds with this crap.

I worked two part time jobs for about 6 months after the one I had worked at for close to 10 years threatened to cut my coworker. I switched to part time and picked up another job that actually paid alot more per hour. Fast forward six months, and the department manager for the first job started to make completely redundant requirements on service calls, like writing out what was done, what parts were used, etc. I'd already had been doing that for literally years before on the online system. I straight up told him I wasn't doing it because it's completely redundant and a waste of time. I still like the guy, but I gave my notice after the other job offered me a full time spot with a pay raise.
This is the norm in many retail jobs. And yes, they change the schedule weekly - both days and shifts. They do expect you to be available all the time, on less than 20 hrs. per week. For low pay. They will not work with you on your schedule if you get a second job… Pretty sad…
I remember getting a PTF (Part time Flexible!!) job with the USPS. I worked 12 hours a day 6 days a week for the first 3 years and slept on Sunday. Then all PTFs got cut to 25 hours a week ... Until I made full time, which took about 3 more months. If I hadn't been so tired from working so much for the 1st 3 years I would've been mad. But I had saved up most of my disposable income because I was too tired, after working 12 hours a day, to go out and spend any money. Literally only spent on rent, food, petrol and electricity for 3 years!!
That nonsense about making someone cover your shift? That is the manager’s job. Policies like that show how companies put weak managers in place and protect them with bad policies. Requesting a doctor’s note for a single sick day is both intimidation and retaliation. I still have to remind employees who have come from toxic work culture that I don’t need a note if they’re sick for a day or two.
