14 years ago today my dad passed away from cancer. I remember him playing through this album all the time, one of his all time favorites and for a good reason. I've been blasting it all day. Love and miss you dad.
To be honest it's by far the best Steely Dan song and surely in the top 3 of the best songs of all time, it's also a crime that this song is so underrated even by steely dan fans.
Very true! Also, I love ALL Steely Dan albums but "Can't Buy A Thrill" just might be my favorite .I'm 74 and bought each Dan album as they came out. Sure, I went ape when Aja and other Dan albums came out, but for some reason, whenever I'm in the mood for the Dan, I always seem to gravitate to this album. The greatness of Steely Dan, but not so INSANELY perfect as their most famous recordings. Anyway, I agree with you about this song. It is my favorite Steely Dan song..
@@tonys4396 Yeah we are agree 👍 I think this song and this album is so great because of it's originality, it's unmatched melodies and those song are so cool it put you in a great mood 😁

The Dan were masters at setting the mood with such diversity of instrumentation. The back beat of congos, cabasa, maracas, and guiro gets that smooth, laid back groove sliding underneath. Then that splashing keyboard comes in over the top with sparse guitar riffs filling in the empty spaces, oh so tastefully and masterfully. And that electric sitar line taken by the keyboards back into the verse at the break. What else needs to be said. The Dan.
I just heard this song on the radio. Realised I’m about 50 years too late! My ex-colleague and friend told me he liked Steely Dan. Sadly he’s dead now from prostate cancer. We used to have a good laugh at work. Tea breaks in the morning and afternoon and we kept in touch after he retired! We both used to go out for curries. This song reminds me of him

Same with me. Two of the Clique I was hanging around at that time were DJ´s. This Song was the "Opener" when they were at the turn tables. Some Nights we started to dance all nights through.
I heard this in 1970 going into New York on a Greyhound bus. I was absolutely blown away. I was living the dream. I was 15, just finished my O levels and spending a month in Canada and America. I will remember it always.
You are underrated ok. Keep your snotty comments to yourself ok. You got nothing good to say, then shut your mouth ok. This song is the greatest one steeley dan ever sang ok.
Dad, Thank you for introducing me to great music at such a young age. I didn't appreciate it then. But I rely heavily on it these days. You are appreciated. ❤️
I was born in 1980 to 24 year old parents....Steely Dan was a HUGE part of the soundtrack of my childhood. By the time I was 24 I was buying SD records and naming my parents dog Aja. RIP Aja.
I was 12 in 1972… can remember staying up all nite listening to a crackling am radio station, around 5 am we’d get our boards and start the 8 mile hitch hike fiasco to cocoa beach , usually 4 or 5 of us so it was usually some dude in a pick up truck… awesome days , good times that kids these days will never experience
In 7th grade Miami 13 years old.. thought I was a big boy! Took our boards like you did to Halover beach! Thanks for the memories...my fellow Floridian!
AWESOME. That's amazing kids at opposite ends of the country doing the same thing, I was 15 and me about 4 or 5 of my friends would stand at the on ramp to the 91 freeway at Bellflower Blvd staggered apart with our thumbs out racing to see who could make to Huntington Beach first. We would pass each other on the way and wave and Laugh. We all would make it usually within half hour of each other. MY the good ole days. Your right gone forever.
I thank the heavens I was born in 1960. Phenomenal music & no cell phones to capture every awkward teen moment. Miss going to the beach & hearing everyone tune their transitors to the same station.
This is sooooo dope! Im a hip hop producer, but i cannot be that if i didnt recognize and give props to the musicians who stamped GIANT footprints in this Universe of Chords and Modes! Always have loved these guys ...1 of the best by far!!!! Peace
I was around 17 when I 'discovered' this band. I bought this album because I liked the cover. The same way I bought Abraxas by Santana f.e. Steely Dan was barely on my record player and I rushed back to the shop to find out if they had made more albums. Unfortunately at that time the seller did not have another album. I had to wait for a couple of months to get more of their material. Now, almost half a century later I still listen to them.
Born in the 50's. Lucky to be still here and enjoying the music of the 60's and 70's. After listening to this tune I will be listening to Rikki Don't Lose That Number in memory of my friend Ricky that I lost to the bottle last year. We used to listen to it in his apartment when we were young.
Steely Dan aren't the only great band in history, but if you like music at all, I don't see how it is not possible to not be in awe of this band or this song. I know they were renowned for being perfectionists, but that is apparent from every, single, perfectly placed note. I have not ever even bought a SD album, but even so, I think they effectively define 'cool'.
They had buy 1 get 7 vinyl album record companies back in them days, kids. And this album was on my first load. Blew my 15 year old mind and set me on the path to a far greater appreciation of jazz and more complex music than I probably would have had otherwise. They were too cool for themselves, but sure did master pop music and change rock n roll forever.
RIP Mr. Becker. I worked security at one of their shows here in SF in 2010 and it was one of the most fun crowds. Nerdy dope smokers who love to balter.
This is that one song I heard growing up that I never could figure out what the name was…. Cheers to you steely and thank you all for this gem of 3 lifetimes😭😭😂

Just saw them in Houston (The Woodlands) night before last. OH.MY.GOD. Never seen them before but grew up with my older brothers listening to them. They made me love them . SO classy, talented, and the lyrics…don’t get me started. So cerebral but multi-faceted…to appeal to the masses. I LOVE them and always will. Feel like I’ve done something right in that my early 20-something daughters that I offered tickets to Steely Dan said “He’ll, yeah!”…makes me feel amazing. Love you all forever. P.s. shoutout to the “back up” singers who stole the show ❤️❤️❤️
I can’t believe I had to miss this. I’m close to Woodlands, Lake Jackson, but chose to be at the Stones tour in Europe as I am a hardcore lifelong Stones fan. Otherwise I would have been there.

Yeah man, there are great solos all over Steely Dan's catalogue. Sorta jazz/rock fusion, great stuff.
Lyrics:
Steely Dan
In the mornin' you go gunnin' for the man who stole your water
And you fire till he is done in but they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all sangin' as they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hangin' and they put you on the street
You go back, Jack, do it again, wheels turinin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again
When you know she's no high climber then you find your only friend
In a room with your two timer, and you're sure you're near the end
Then you love a little wild one, and she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smilin'; you'll be on your knees tomorrow
You go back, Jack, do it again, wheels turinin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again
Now you swear and kick and beg us that you're not a gamblin' man;
Then you find you're back in Vegas with a handle in your hand
Your black cards can make you money so you hide them when you're able
In the land of milk and honey you must put them on the table
You go back, Jack, do it again, wheels turinin' 'round and 'round
You go back, Jack, do it again
The line is sanguine (blood thirsty) not singin (which makes sense if a person is gonna get hung in a gallows) Other than that, those are the lyrics.

Same with me. Two of the Clique I was hanging around at that time were DJ´s. This Song was the "Opener" when they were at the turn tables. Some Nights we started to dance all nights through.
Addiction is no joke Klaus.
One of the best albums ever made. Period.
In my opinion, the best albums ever made are The Dark Side Of The Moon, Can't Buy A Thrill, and The Wall

Agreed...but if i dwell on it too long, the list has at least 25 albums that are "one" of the best.
It cannot be quantified
I heard this in 1970 going into New York on a Greyhound bus. I was absolutely blown away. I was living the dream. I was 15, just finished my O levels and spending a month in Canada and America. I will remember it always.
Released in 1972? Maybe they dropped a single early......
@@paulrigby7135 He's likely misremembering things.
Beautiful experience!
What are O levels?
Yes, 1972 it was
This song is so underrated.
This band is underrated
You are underrated ok. Keep your snotty comments to yourself ok. You got nothing good to say, then shut your mouth ok. This song is the greatest one steeley dan ever sang ok.
Steely Dan did it way big
I love the song Peg. It reminds me of my dad.
@@shannonblanchard8195 By who?
This song is sick, jesus. Lyrics are so good too, I know all those feelings
Dad,
Thank you for introducing me to great music at such a young age.
I didn't appreciate it then. But I rely heavily on it these days. You are appreciated. ❤️
Great Dad....Congrats
Pass it on.
Parents are never fully appreciated until they are gone.
You are welcome son.
@@joehermanartist I'm a Girl. But ty!! Lol
I really need to go back where I grew up and relive the 70s & 80s for a day
Same here
The 1970s was my childhood years. I want to relive my childhood years again in the 1970s.
WE KNOW TIMES WERE BETTER!!.

Me too....not the movement, just the 12
AWESOME. That's amazing kids at opposite ends of the country doing the same thing, I was 15 and me about 4 or 5 of my friends would stand at the on ramp to the 91 freeway at Bellflower Blvd staggered apart with our thumbs out racing to see who could make to Huntington
Beach first.
God, we were so blessed to have the best music ever! Long live 60s/70s!
You go that right! I was born in '62! Best two decades ever for music!
True, now your talking
Amen to that!!!!!! Music was best times!!!!
60s 70s 80s are truly unmatched
This is sooooo dope! Im a hip hop producer, but i cannot be that if i didnt recognize and give props to the musicians who stamped GIANT footprints in this Universe of Chords and Modes! Always have loved these guys ...1 of the best by far!!!!
Peace
That's respect. Good on ya
Now, almost half a century later I still listen to them.
well said
You talking about the solo b****
HipHop Producers don't talk a lot.
The first time I smoked weed with a black dude, he was playing this in his very clean light green 76 Monte Carlo.
As he should.
Still as excellent as ever .... Thank you!
Born in the 50's. Lucky to be still here and enjoying the music of the 60's and 70's. After listening to this tune I will be listening to Rikki Don't Lose That Number in memory of my friend Ricky that I lost to the bottle last year. We used to listen to it in his apartment when we were young.
2024 and still grooving to this
Classic❤
As a "kid" who is now 46 years old, I will always remember that organ. That was no joke 💯👏🏽
This truly sounds like it would make a great end credits song for a 70's film.
I agreed ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It did for "The Tender Bar"
@@edwardheynes3880 Had no idea until now.
:)
A Gem From The 70's,Can't Find Songs Like This Anymore 💃🏻😎🙏🏻🕉️🥺🥳🥴☮️☸️♾️💃🏻🙏🏻🇫🇮
I’m 26 have no idea what I’m doing typing here but thank you steely Dan hope I can make an impact like you hav made on all of us
The steely Dan song gets better every time I hear it
They had buy 1 get 7 vinyl album record companies back in them days, kids. And this album was on my first load. Blew my 15 year old mind and set me on the path to a far greater appreciation of jazz and more complex music than I probably would have had otherwise. They were too cool for themselves, but sure did master pop music and change rock n roll forever.
This '"Can't Buy a Thrill" album, and "Aja", are their two best. Such a distinctive sound brought by both albums.
all their albums are like children, you can have favorites, but the "Best" is subjective. LOL.
don't forget the royal scam
Gaucho is amazing too
I think 'The Royal Scam' is up there with those two.
Royal Scam
Definitely one of the greatest bands of our time.
RIP Mr. Becker. I worked security at one of their shows here in SF in 2010 and it was one of the most fun crowds. Nerdy dope smokers who love to balter.
What a pleasure !!!
I'm 54yrs old I remember my older brother and sister played this on the radio in the 70s when I was a little kid
This is that one song I heard growing up that I never could figure out what the name was…. Cheers to you steely and thank you all for this gem of 3 lifetimes😭😭😂
My first album at age 12......Every single subtle nuance of this amazing musicianship is forever etched in my brain..... Kids today suffer!
Chill out dude
Just let all people enjoy music and dont pretend you are better because you listened to it when you were young
Not all! 22 and proud Dan fan
You suffer...cate.
You're right music is shite now.
If you're here in 2022. You're a legend and have good music taste
It's 2023 and I still love listening to Steely Dan music. Their music never ages!😊❤
This song gives me a thrill everytime I listen to it , and Im 70, it takes me back to fun filled days and nights of being young free and single
what the fuck! I'm 21 so I didn't know music could get this good.
Good for you!! There is so much great music from 70's bands. Hope you get to hear more - lots to enjoy!
Definitely in my Top 10 songs.
Everything about this tune is hypnotic and brilliant.. it's a Masterpiece.
3:00 - 4:15 is some of the most badass solo composition ever written 🦧
On a par with a similar concept in "Magic Man".
An absolutely wonderful progression and fine musicians make it pure gold :)
The most elegant tubes for sure.

Yes sir!!!
The band that keeps giving the more time passes. Thank you Fagan and Becker!
An old friend introduced me to this back in the late 70's and hearing it now takes me straight back there enjoying a meal together and sipping a glass of red. Sublime.
Love the memories this song brings to my mind. This band was way before its time. Truly amazing!
Just started thinking about this song out of nowhere!! Probably haven't heard it in at least 45 years!! Still good!!
This is a real sound and culture on USA just amazing. Regards from Mexico for this artistic pieces. Thanks.
Best 2 first minutes in the first track of a debut album in the history of pop music
first 2 minutes made me shart violently
y'know i had been estranged fully from my dad for at least two years by the time he died, but one of the few things we agreed on was steely dan. you got one thing unequivocally right, old man. thanks for this album, i know it back to front and back again.
Just a kidz of 97
But loves an old school
One kind of a solos it got
Music just had substance back then, I love visiting these tracks. Old but so refreshing in today's day
you said the magic word man "substance" thats what todays music doesnt have
@@envioustunic6713untrue. You're trying to find good to decent music.
Do you think the concept of substance has just abandoned modern music?
50 years later and this song still inspires me ...........
Yep!
Was 13 yrs old living in Thailand when I heard this for the first time...
Was smoking weed with a Thai national
I went to school with..
Good times
Thanks for the memories
Getting high right now......
This song is special for me , i remember my dad playing it while he Wash his car , my father pass away one year ago, i cant hear it without cry remember him😪
I’m right there with you. My memory was random car rides. My dad used to wake us up (my siblings and me) and we would cruise. He always popped in this cassette
my first taste was with my father to go fishing, the song just calms you down
Idk if people realize how awesome the lyrics are on this song. Idk if they can tell anymore... Fking awesome.
Dude this song is older than my parents and it still holds up. Im stuck in the late 60s and 70s their is so much to learn from them
Awwww mannnnn Im telling my age...music is sooooo goood...the rif before they even start singing...thanks Steely Dan for bringing us back to better times❤
간만에 들었어요
옛생각 납니다 굿~~
My only best friend showed me this back in 200-something. Thank you John McDonald
born in the 90s but begging to go back to the 70s. im 25 and i love era of music more than anything
At the time this album came out there was nothing to precede their unique sound. For me I knew this was a great band.
This is how a real kick ass rock band gets down, Long Live Steely Dan ,
Love this tune -I play it over and over again -now in my mid 70's
Otherwise I would have been there.
this is surely a great candidate for the best song ever
Damn my folks used to talk about this guy like he wasn't any good this is sick
💯💯💯👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
It's a band, not a guy (which later became a duo).
