Asking "Do you think this is an AI war", when clearly tens of thousands of people are dying (on both sides) in a war which in so many ways is closer to WW2 tactics. AI is surely assisting in decisions, maybe don't dramatize the war as being like a Terminator movie. It is clearly very real and brutal war, with hand to hand fighting.

Yes, fully automated combat will likely become commonplace.
No, with the way current AI models work, sentience is not going to happen, though the human need to anthropomorphize things may interpret particularly unintuitive errors on some fictional intelligence.
Depending on the amount of nonconductive shielding it has, maybe. It would severely complicate radio control, though, not to mention using weight normally reserved for armor, making the robot vulnerable to conventional attacks.

In the future? It could totally go so far that the machines all exist on a nanoscopic scale, wars take minutes instead of years, and everything seems eerily similar to Neal Stephensons "The Diamond Age"... but that level of development will take over a decade, at minimum.

Many Ukranians, can't even speak Ukrainian right.
Zelensky didn't even know how to speak Ukrainian until he decided to run for president.

Most Ukranians you see have family in Russia
They are like Norwegians and Swedes, Germans and Austrians, Americans and Canadians, Australian and New Zealanders.

Yep... I am able to imagine what lies ahead.
"There is a god in orbit. It is evil and can see you and kill you during the day. Do not leave the cave before nightfall." - said the old man.
The children laughed at the elder guy. That old man could only be lying or going senile. Anyway, the adults had left the cave to go berry gathering and hunting two nights before and still hadn't returned. And the two boys were extremely curious and wanted to know what the world looked like in daylight.
The next day, when the old man fell asleep, they crept out of the cave and were amazed. The world was really beautiful. The blue sky stretched as far as they could both see. The forest grew amidst the ruins of a city that seemed to have been abandoned for a long time. The old man had told stories about that abandoned town he himself had lived in when he himself was only 5 years old. The children, who had never left the cave before, seemed to have arrived in a New Continent. And they were extremely happy. Nothing put their lives in danger, at least that's what they believed until they were hit in the head by a powerful laser from space. Both dropped dead.
When he woke up, around noon, the old man noticed that the boys were not in the cave. He carefully approached her entrance and managed to see the two small inert bodies on the floor. He began to cry and remember a painful past.
Shortly before he was born the nations of the planet had celebrated the Great Peace Agreement. The biggest symbol of it would be the super satellite empowered with Artificial Intelligence placed in orbit.
The old man no longer remembered the name of the satellite and had some difficulty retelling the story to himself. Once placed in orbit, the satellite would collect all the data produced by all people, companies, institutions and national governments to manage each personal destination and the long-term relationships between States. The satellite could reward and punish people according to the projections it made by analyzing the collected data. It brought institutions closer and further apart, maintaining a peaceful balance between nations through the rational and equitable distribution of scarce resources. In the most serious cases, the satellite could use the laser to interrupt someone's life. But this rarely happened, because everyone simply behaved in a less hostile manner by transferring power to a superior intelligence capable of being fair at all times in all situations.
That planet could have thrived for centuries. But then something unusual happened. A hitherto unknown volcano emerged from the bottom of the ocean and exploded with enormous force, causing climate imbalance. Scarcity has provoked strife between people and nations. The immense cloud of silica interrupted the download and upload of data by the satellite, the nations went to war and eventually all the infrastructure that made it possible for the satellite to manage that planetary civilization was destroyed.
Over time the survivors of the war began to forget that there was a powerful satellite in orbit. But the equipment stayed in orbit and the Artificial Intelligence eventually had to evolve. As it no longer received data from the planet and had no way of knowing whether its commands would be obeyed, the satellite first decided to remain inert for some time, waiting for contact to be reestablished.
A few years later, AI started working again. As the silica cloud began to dissipate, the satellite's high-resolution cameras captured images of war-torn cities. The AI concluded that the civilization that created it had disappeared due to an invasive species and began using the laser to exterminate all humans it could detect. But this could only be done during the day, because at night the satellite's high-resolution cameras were useless. It was at this time that people started living in caves during the day and gathering food and hunting at night.
The old man had survived because his parents had adapted to their new life. His children were taught to fear the all-seeing deity who kills all people during the day. But his grandchildren were very far from that reality he knew. To them the stories were just stories that could very well have been made up by the old man.
We know that Plato said that coming out of the cave was necessary to suppress human ignorance. But on that planet governed by the AI in orbit, the opposite seemed to be true: the old man's grandchildren should have stayed in the cave to survive, because truth and life were only possible in the dim light. The old man mourned the tragedy. When the boys' parents returned he would have to explain what had happened.
"Bloody tech god in orbit." - shouted the old man from the back of the cave.

AI functions using the code that makes it, altering that code herself, would cause the code and thus the AI to cede functioning.

There are much more fundamental issues, even without introducing elements of "calculated irrationality".
Popular example is the paperclip maximizer thought experiment:
"The scenario describes an advanced artificial intelligence tasked with manufacturing paperclips. If such a machine were not programmed to value human life, then given enough power over its environment, it would try to turn all matter in the universe, including human beings, into either paperclips or machines which manufacture paperclips."
And when we try to train the AI to value human life, we arrive at the AI Alignment Problem.
Basically, we haven't figured out how to ensure that the AI is actually aligned with our REAL goals.
It isn't even clear how to specify our real goals, as there are always hidden assumptions we make.
e.g. when you task another human with building a paperclip manufacturing machine, you would never think about telling them: "Don't use human bodies as source material"
But that's just the first step, even if we could fully specify our real goals in suitable way, how do we test the AI to ensure it's aligned?
It could be "pretending" to be aligned during testing, but behave differently when deployed in the real world.

The fright rhetoric involving AI. Well, my nearly decade old desktop is AI - essentially programmed by a human and can be hacked and cause harm by interrupting my day's agenda. For other people, depending on the purpose, their computers - desktops, robots, human-like robots, camera screeners, etc - can bring havoc, including releasing bio warfare, missiles, people trafficking, addiction, and a myriad of other issues - harmful depending WHO is behind the apparatus' programing. As typical, we react to AI's future consequences - years after AI's many uses have been implemented for some years now. Perhaps there is fear that humans will create "connections" with human-like AI robots as we do with smartphones and other screen technology? Ultimately...AI is under human brain control.

Lol. 5 poor nations, with barely a GDP per capita to fund their health issues. Russia, for example, has 6% of the globe's HIV cases, despite only having 1.8% of the world's population 😅

@@Mark-Haddow Because the USA spread HIV and drugs through organized crime in Russia and Ukraine, where the Russian-speaking population lives, with the intention of exterminating the Russian world. In addition, they financed in this way the terrorists in Afghanistan who produce drugs to fight against the authorities, which were sometimes protected by the Soviets.

If anyone was curious what the other nations were hiding...
Brazil has 45% of the 1.8 million with HIV in South America.
India has 2.4 (tested) citizens living with HIV. This number is considered a fraction of the true number, but testing in remote areas of India is almost non-existent.
South Africa has 5.7 known cases of HIV, and may be around the true figure since the West has been involved in fighting (test & treat) their epidemic which sees S.A. with one of the highest % of adults and children with the virus.
China doesn't have a history of reporting on its true percentage. We can only guess the number is in the millions.
