remembering when i got a job on the Easterhouse buses in the sixties,i was about nineteen,i didn’t know up till then about how many people lived there,it was quite an experience as a bus conductress on the green buses going from Easterhouse to Glasgow or Parkhead, especially in the early morning when the bus would be full of passengers going to their workplace and back in the evening. i found it to be a great job with good pay also. i liked the people who lived there, always friendly despite the environment they had to live in,no shops, not a lot going for them,i think this was the reason there were gangs of youths on the streets fighting as there wasn’t any type of clubs for them to use to keep them occupied. yes i remember that time very well as a young bus conductress trying at first to learn a job taking the public back and forth each day to work.

I can remember playing in the street without any worries, no boarded up houses, no derilect buildings. I have stayed in shandwick st for my entire life its sad to see a once great area in ruins. Hopefully with the new building work and regeneration the area can become great again. 5*

I was born in Duntarvie Crescent (prior to the new-build programme) and I understood that, the only way out of this run-down, gone to the dogs area, was education. I simply applied myself thereof, and threw all my time into my studies!
The local politicians, no matter what they promise, do not give a damn about our run-down areas of Glasgow; in fact, it is because of them, that it has taken years for any improvement; and even these are superficial.

Don’t see why a lot of these houses couldn’t have been saved with some investment to improve them, They have knocked them all down and replaced them with a fraction of the houses that once stood, Now it’s very difficult for our children to get an affordable house! And I miss having a veranda.

They seem to be doing alot of the houses up in Easterhouse but should they spend the money to do so for the scum to wreck them all over again?

11 years on and what you said couldn’t be more true.
Brilliant new houses built for these people crying ‘poverty’, yet look at Easterhoose, Ruchazie, Cranhill and Wellhoose... the schemes are fuckin horrendous.
The politicians get stick, and rightly so, but when scumbags get great new houses and continue to be scumbags and continuously wreck their house/area they live in then there’s only so much politicians can do.
The truth hurts. You were spot on.

Actually the flats at Easterhouse look far less grim than some of the sixties high rises and are on more of a human scale. However, they're now worn out and have suffered from problems with damp and vandalism.

Its a fucking crying shame that in less than 15 minutes drive from most of these locations you'll find the HQ's of some of the most profitable companies in Europe. I love Glasgow and am ashamed that some of my fellow Glaswegians have to live in such shitholes.

DonnyMacG If it wasn't for Thatcher, your economy would've been down the toilet and your economy would never have lived to see 1985 never mind reaching the 90's. Either way, this video is sad, a lot of good folk that suffer because of Socialism, and Labour is the poster story of that.

you as usual talking fucking bollocks...Thatcher was a dictator, a tyrant of a leader whose own MP's were scared to death of. They knew that if they disagreed with her or tried to go against anything she wanted, they would be at best demoted, at worst given the sack immediately. She considered herself to be irreplaceable and thought that her tenancy in Downing street would never be challenged. It took a brave Tory to challenge her in the end after the disastrous Poll Tax caused far worse riots in the cities than the recent riots we had in the UK.
She caused boom and bust economies that devastated families and turned communities into ghost towns. Greed was the order of the day and this came from America, with whom she had a very close Relationship with Ronald Reagan. She pulled every trick in the book to prevent workers striking. Encouraged them to buy their council homes and prevented councils from building new ones with the proceeds, hence the affordable housing shortage today. Once people had bought their council homes, they had a mortgage which they feared losing if they went on strike for better conditions. She created that situation and she did not crush the unions at all, apart from the miners, whose industry she decimated.
Someone mentioned North Sea Oil and how she made billions from it. Wrong again I'm afraid. The billions that were earned from North Sea Oil were totally wasted in the payment of unemployment benefits to the 3.5 million she threw onto the scrap heap. A whole generation of young people were wasted. See how Cameron today is following in her footsteps and a further generation of young people are left on the scrap heap with no hope of a job. She created despair and a feeling of hopelessness among millions of working class families who having bought their council house found that it was worth less than the mortgage they had taken out to buy it. Rampant inflation and sky high interest rates of 17% were enough to put many unfortunate families out on the street as they struggled to pay their mortgages.
Hospitals and schools were left to wreck and ruin. Waiting lists were often 2 years or more. Doctors, nurses, dentists and teachers were scarce and they had to be brought in from abroad. There was no minimum wage and people worked up to 60 hours a week for a miserable £1 per hour.
That was what the Thatcher years were like. Not the utopia that other Tory supporters think they lived in during her reign. The greed and selfish society we have today is a direct result of her policies. Britain may have been poorer before she came to power, but we were a lot happier, that's for certain.

amy wood It really is not difficult to put someone such as yourself in your place about Margaret Thatcher, why? Because you don't understand the first thing to do with economics. Which is why the usual rhetoric is this:
*_"you as usual talking fucking bollocks...Thatcher was a dictator, a tyrant of a leader whose own MP's were scared to death of."_*
First of all, to show you just how stupid that comment is, a tyrant does not deregulate the economy, nor does a tyrant limit government intervention and aim to put the economy in the hands of the people. A tyrant favours Collectivism, the big authoritarian centralised government, and that is something Thatcher opposed. Of course, your idea of a tyrant comes from the fact she privatised failing industry and allowed those failing industries to fail, when in real fact, that's what you're supposed to do in the economy, you're not supposed to reward failure. But you haven't the intelligence to understand why that is.
As for Thatcher, she took over Britain in a very serious time when the country was in very serious trouble, the fact she reversed the economy and saved Britain from going under, that proves how erroneous your entire argument is. Someone with the power to demote or sack people, is not a tyrant. If I was a leader of a party filled with Socialists, I'd do the same thing, Socialists are the creed of ignorance.
As for the whole issue to do with the poll tax, Thatcher was not perfect, but you see, that's the problem with you lefties, target issues like that, but ignore all the good she done, such as ending the Trade Unions.
I have to laugh at you, you don't even know what a boom and bust economy is, what you ignore is that in the year 1979, Great Britain was heading under, it's astounding at the fact you ignore that.
Encouraging people to buy council houses is a bad thing? You just don't get it, do you? Things in life can't come for free, the country was broke for the very economic policies you were protesting to protect, that's how back to front you are. No, the affordable housing shortage today is actually because of the inflation Socialism caused, but because people like you have no intelligence and don't understand why inflation happens, then of course, you would blame that on Thatcher. If I were to ask you how inflation occurs, you wouldn't be able to answer that question.
Oh she decimated an industry that was not worth saving? Oh, okay, my bad, she decimated an industry that had been in decline since the 1920's, one of which declined for the following reasons:
*1.* The rise of oil and then gas and nuclear as cleaner alternative sources of power.
*2.* The decline of heavy industries that depended on coal.
*3.* Domestic heating moved away from coal, and North Sea gas replaced coal gas.
      *4.* Lower cost foreign coal.
But that's right, we'll all be fools like you are and ignore those 4 facts, we'll aim to bailout a coal mining industry that would've been a waste of money, one which would've just wasted tax payers money, made them poorer and would've caused it to go under anyway, but not only the industry, the entire economy. That's how dangerously stupid you lefties are.
I must say, you leftists are the most ignorant, despicable, stupid people that ever faced this planet earth, and that is saying something.
Tell me something, how well did Democratic Socialism do from 1945 to 1979? Let me guess, you'll try and blame that on _"The Tories"_ because you're that fucked in the head that everything is _"The Tories"_. If you knew anything about what you were talking about, you would know a bloody Socialist was in charge of the Conservative Party between 1965 and 1975 and was Prime Minister of them in 1970 to 1974. But that's right, we'll ignore these facts, and we'll ignore the big massive failure of Democratic Socialism, just so we can continue down the ignorant road of more Socialism despite its failure plastered all over history.
You have the cheek to talk about unemployment and poor people, why? This video shows the images of exactly what Socialism did to this country, and because of stupid people like you live here, then it's only going to get worse.

amy wood Because you are the common sheep of society that is the cause of all our economic mess. You Socialists destroyed the economy, now after destroying what is already in shit state, you want to create an even bigger mess. There's a reason the Soviet Union collapsed, Socialism from Central Planning to calculation is simply impossible and the only people that don't understand that, are the stupid people.
This video explains exactly the fault of Socialism, and you idiots are too stupid to understand it:
