very true. most of the cars in the lineup (those and trains are the only things i’m interested in from TLG nowadays) that are 18+ i would have loved when i was 12-14. i think this one almost takes some appreciation of modern engineering to fully enjoy the build.
Each crane has a lifting diagram (in the cabin also). If you check a real one, that might have incredible low lifting weight capacity in flat angles. If you make a linear calculation: 1) 1 dimension ratio to the weight; 2) rational weight difference (because it is made of plastic). Then you can get how much the lego version should lift in what angle
I am a crane driver and enthousiast myself. And I know a view things of the real crane. I know that it can lift 660 (metric)tons at a distance of 100 metres. So the real crane is quite a beast!
The more I look into this set, it looks like what really happened is that Lego ran into some real engineering problems and materials limitations while designing this set. It's novel and impressive looking, but I can't help but wonder if the noticeable changes from the real thing are simply because they couldn't find a half-decent way to build this set and still have it be more or less "functional". They probably could have resolved the issue with more new parts... but that would turn this set into a sunk-cost monstrosity (for Lego). To point out an easy difference, the lack of counterweights on the back of crane's main body. I think this would have resulted in the body not balancing well on the central ring. It could have also become too heavy to turn around. Similarly, the tracks dancing around with the top spins means that the tracks are simply too light. Which means bigger tracks (perhaps even a double-track system)... and stronger/more motors to turn everything. Issues like these keep cropping up, and before long you find out the biggest limiting factor is that you're working with plastic and not steel. And I wouldn't be surprised if the crane model mentioned was the original intent for this set... and simply didn't work, resulting in a scaled back but still very functional version of a crawler crane. And for anyone who has been around cranes... seeing the tracks lift off the ground *AT ALL* is a terrifying sight. The guys running the excavators might have fun doing that, but you never see that with the cranes. Luckily, this is just Lego. To comment on the price? It's definitely too much, and I think the price is intentionally inflated to cover the bigger than anticipated design costs along and to offset the expected lower sales. While the price appears to be the biggest complaint, the other issues with the set would have inevitably come to light. I think Lego is expecting only the most dedicated and die-hard fans to get this one, and are bumping the price in an attempt to off-set the already incurred costs during the design phase. I think this is definitely not a "price per piece" issue so much as it ended up being a much bigger design cost. On the bright side, it's very likely that Lego learned quite a few lessons from designing this set, which will go to helping design future sets.
Would have been nice to see it they used metal wrapped in plastic counterweights instead, would have added more lifting capacity. Also could account for the much higher price as the counterweights won't get much use in other sets.
I think their legal department put their foot down. Cranes are very tricky and need very skilled operators assisted by loads of sensors not to tip over. I once built a big Lego crane with regular Lego Technic parts and started fooling around with ever heavier weights and counterweights. All fine and dandy right up to the point the load let go and my crane turned into a trebuchet. The hook came nowhere near my face but with less luck could have taken out an eye. Not something you want to sell nowadays.
It has two hubs and some 3-4 motors. Also bigger stronger pieces, which I think may justify a slightly higher price, maybe 450 ish, there's the Liebherr name used, so that easily adds more value.

Life is too short for safety limits :D Thanks for the review. Without talking about the price, it's a very cool set. I wonder how low the hook can go, so you can lift up things from lower than the crane is placed.
This crane is at my work right now. Like the real one 😂 it's mind boggling how massive it truly is irl. I'm 6'1. The top of my head is not even as tall as to the top of the front wheel. It's truly an amazing machine. The ballast weights are ridiculously huge.

I don't know much about crane, but I was expecting the counterweights to be moved further back in order to compensate for heavy loads. At first, I thought that would be linked to the overload detector (either by a motor, or just geometry with a shaft pulling/pushing them away from the center of gravity. That could be a customisation theme for a MOC based on this model.

Great review as always! I wonder how it would fare with heavier counterweights. I know lego has to include them for the sake of it, but I can't help but feel like it would have been significantly cheaper and more effective if it was just left to the buyer. You'll probably touch on this in part 2!

Brilliant review Balazs! 🥳 Yes, the first thing that came to mind when seeing the set was that the counterweight would not be enough. I would imagine if there was another counterweight far back on the ground (akin to the 'real' LR13000) then the lifting capacity would be improved. (Although structural stress and bending will have to be factored in.) 🤔
The high resistance of the motor at 2:55 is actually a really good idea-in the bucket wheel excavator, the motors needed fresh batteries to have enough torque to even drive the whole system.
The price is insane even for lego. Don’t tell me that licence for Liebherr is more expensive that ones for Lamborghini, Ferrari or Bugatti. And those sets was about €350. And now, crane with 2800+ pcs for 750-800 euros? WTF? There is something rotten in Billund, Denmark..
Maybe if I can buy a couple more tower pieces for cheap. Still doesn't look like that much for $700, if buying that much lego I'd go for millennium falcon
Would be interesting to see someone increase the counterweight and the top boom length. Would make it look much more like the real crane. I wonder how well it would hold up?
you incorrectly estimated the load capacity of the crane, you need to put the boom completely up and the goose, too, this will give you the opportunity to lift the load directly under you and show the maximum load capacity
This set is Awesome !!! Now can you take this set to the next level? Please max out the boom length and the counterweights to see how massive this set can be. 😲😎
I enjoy the box being that shape. It's tall. Which is the main feature of the model too. Yea it's a dang nice model of a real workhorse. But dang it's tall.

However the lack of hanging weights on the rear is not accurate and would completely fix the weight issue. In real life it has about triple the counter weights. Also the boom should be about 8 feet taller to match scaling😅

Re the rotation speed of the superstructure. The speed varies depending on how far left and right you slide the "lever" from the centre point. If you want it to move more slowly, just dont slide the lever as far.
It's a nice model but the price is more than double what would be reasonable considering what you get. They must be adding a huge, price gouging level, markup on it because it's no where near being worth its price tag.
Lol, the beginning of your video was funny with the crane tipping over and the old guy tipping over. Awesome start, just that alone would get people to start watching. Love your videos and I'm looking forward to building this set, I pre-ordered when it was up for Pre-order on the USA Lego website. As you said, it does turn a little too fast, the Rough Terrain Crane was better about turning at a slower realistic speed.
Thank you for this incredibly thorough review! While I still don't believe that this set's pricepoint is justified, it's clear that much of this set's budget went to large, specialized parts and pieces which will be of use to people who want to build large Technic constructions quickly. The new large frames will be of great use in many MOCs, including those which are primarily composed of System bricks (building a bridge, anyone?) However, the new counterweight pieces seem practically useless outside of this niche scenario. I definitely wish that LEGO had made a more versatile piece that had Technic pin holes on the sides and System studs on the top (with anti-studs on the bottom) so they could be used in other situations.
Well around 1400 of the 2900 parts are pins and tiny axles which cost around 1-2 cents a piece even on the after market and less for Lego themselves. This results in over 600$ for the remaining 1500 parts which is 40 cents a piece. That’s a ridiculous price. The entire set is 23 cents per piece but 10 cents per piece is already expensive when compared to their sets from a few years ago and hyper expensive compared to other brick companies. if i could recomend a custom build lego set it would be the 11200 leibherr ltm crane by jeroen ottens design. it costed me $400 for all the parts and the instructions, took me around 3 months to build, and it could reach up to 6 ft into the air! it is an incredible crane and i would love to see you build it!
I know I paid too much for this, but I bought one and can't wait to get started. When my 60-hour work weeks go back to 50 hours, I will. The box says 18 years and older, I'm glad it doesn't say, not for 60 years and older.
Machines that are designed to lift things come with lifting charts. Please refer to it when lifting heavy weigths that are not in close to the machine.
I have just assembled these models and I think that I should release a kit for sale to improve the length of the two feathers, increase the counterweights and improve the strength of the motors. lego would have to add for that price some accessory like a container or something similar to be able to use it with the crane.
I would use one plastic counterweight to make a mould and pour them in zink or something. The heavier counterweights should increase lifting performance.
LEGO are never supposed to be proportional to the real things, otherwise there'll be no modulars, speed champions, space, etc. Everybody with enough bricks can build models true to the real thing, it just takes time and money. LEGO sets capture the essence of the real thing and shrink it down to play friendly size and proportion, that's the art.
Well, it you check the licensed Technic sets of the past years all of them was aiming for correct overall proportions. Not all details might be captured perfectly, but in the case of this set all main components are way off compared to each other.
$1049.99 here in Australia, No I haven't bought it. Seems it needs more Counterweight. Rotation does need to be slower. I wonder why they didn't use the Cattapilar Tracks from the 42131 Cat D11, I think it would have looked better.
Building from a set is okay, building from your own design deserves a Video! I am currently building a F1 Car and all from my brain, no set or instructions.
have lego said what the weights are made of? have you compared with similar size of system bricks (dense as possible)? I'm also surprised about the superstructure rotation speed - don't the more recent motors allow for variable speed control?
@@RacingBrickbecause of the rough surface on the weights it made me think of your adventures in 3D printing. Would you be able to 3D print heavier weights to increase lifting capacity?

Try adding more counter weights on it
42146 dust cleaning & maintenance will be headache.
Wow, the law of physic, so technical.
It's functioning just like an actual crane would behave. Of course you can't pick out of chart at that radius.
Also, the button that let's you override the safety features is also present in real cranes, "turning the keys."
A fantastic review, thank you. Your content is always thorough, accurate and enjoyable. A little English feedback, if I may. "Winding" is pronounced as "wine-ding" (English, eh! 😅)😊
I'm waiting for mine which i've preordered and will definitely try to make some extension upgrade to make it look more like a real one :D
I want this so badly now after seeing it built
finally, lego motors dont cry if they have to lift more than spoon
if i could recomend a custom build lego set it would be the 11200 leibherr ltm crane by jeroen ottens design. it costed me $400 for all the parts and the instructions, took me around 3 months to build, and it could reach up to 6 ft into the air! it is an incredible crane and i would love to see you build it!
I know I paid too much for this, but I bought one and can't wait to get started. When my 60-hour work weeks go back to 50 hours, I will. The box says 18 years and older, I'm glad it doesn't say, not for 60 years and older.
My favorite is the red liebherr
The crane looks very impressive, I agree. However, the build doesn't look like a challenge. For 700 dollars it could be more challenging.
Machines that are designed to lift things come with lifting charts. Please refer to it when lifting heavy weigths that are not in close to the machine.
I want the lego 42160 for Christmas
I am not a big fan of this set. But I am sure that people gonna love it! Compared with the Eiffel Tower, this one will do probably do better.
I would rather have the Eiffel Tower, at least that looks like the real thing.
Try to put more weight on the back of the crane and see how much load really the motors can withstand, and the overhaul crane assembly.
@mathiasw.8148 Only to a point, then the motors max out.
Interesting set in between the endless crying 😢
I'd love to see this set lift some LEGO sets
When will you make the video about the 42160 audi rs q e-tron mods?
When I won't review other huge sets, but proper mods will take more time for sure
Very nice, thank you for this video 🙂
Excellent build
LEGO are never supposed to be proportional to the real things, otherwise there'll be no modulars, speed champions, space, etc. Everybody with enough bricks can build models true to the real thing, it just takes time and money. LEGO sets capture the essence of the real thing and shrink it down to play friendly size and proportion, that's the art.
Well, it you check the licensed Technic sets of the past years all of them was aiming for correct overall proportions. Not all details might be captured perfectly, but in the case of this set all main components are way off compared to each other.
Great base for a tank
$1049.99 here in Australia, No I haven't bought it. Seems it needs more Counterweight. Rotation does need to be slower. I wonder why they didn't use the Cattapilar Tracks from the 42131 Cat D11, I think it would have looked better.
I really wish I could have this set it is so cool
I want to see how it behaves with more counterweight!
Agreed
you should have weight them all at the same time and just divide by count to get a better average weight
So impressive and nice!
I think the age rating is for how small the parts are and how easily it is to accidentally swallow them.
That doesn't make much sense over the age of 3-4, I don't think a 12 year old swallow more parts than a 16 year old :)
@@RacingBrick Ah I see. :)
Beautiful lego set!
Building from a set is okay, building from your own design deserves a Video!
I am currently building a F1 Car and all from my brain, no set or instructions.
I LOVE IT..I WANT ONE. OMG
have lego said what the weights are made of? have you compared with similar size of system bricks (dense as possible)? I'm also surprised about the superstructure rotation speed - don't the more recent motors allow for variable speed control?
They didn't say anything, they look like solid plastic. Motor speed could be easily lower, it totally depends on the app
@@RacingBrickbecause of the rough surface on the weights it made me think of your adventures in 3D printing. Would you be able to 3D print heavier weights to increase lifting capacity?
@@Gzilla313 it's certainly possible
The weights are ABS...moulded ABS that's it.
