While I appreciate the approach of this kit being a Technic kit, really many larger regular kits could not be built without their Technic skeleton. The UCS Falcon, the Razor Crest, etc., are totally dependent on Technic elements. This approach made for a great review though.
I’ve built Lego sets my whole life but have never been on any forums, youtube videos and interacted at all with other Lego people so it surprised me that there was a small disconnect between Lego builders and technic builders
Unexpected part usage is always a nice surprise. The current Buzz Lightyear space ship has two of the new differential-hulls as engines... (red gears not included) :D
Very nice and compact review. The points you mention are exactly the ones why I much prefer the AT-AT above many other UCS sets. The fact that it’s minifig compatible is a very charming plus, too. A bit like 75060 Slave I, but a lot bigger…;)
It may seem easy and Lego already produced a motorized AT-AT walker all the way back in 2007... buuut the hardest thing to get right with this walker is its complex walk cycle. In the movies it only moves one leg at a time which creates many stability issues. Lego went the easier way and built a simplified walk mechanism in their older model from 2007 which moves two legs at a time, resulting in a rather wonky, but still very functional walk cycle. But maybe one day they will release a new motorized walker with an improved, more accurate mechanism. ;)
The easiest walker are 6 legs vehicle : you always have 3 legs for stability, while 4 legs means either move one leg after the other, or partly unstable steps in your walking process... Might be easier to motorize with mindstorm, to get " cycle " of walk straight or turning, but still an inferno...
@@Jessikitty2020 I hope that this is helpful advice, but if you are posing your walker, keep in mind that the knees of the AT-AT work like human knees, so they never bend forwards. ;)
I actually watched this video AFTER building my own AT-AT, but it brought up so many fond memories of the experience. Nice commentary. Keep up the good work!
Great review, I love your approach to this set as a Technic set, it's a really cool angle. I am also building mine from current part collection, I had to take a lot of sets apart to be able to get enough parts for it, and I even had to go and buy some extra parts, including those cool new rounded 6x6 gear racks, and a lot of those blue half-pins, I really underestimated this beast!
And much less easy to use the bricks for anything else than this set. Sorry but Lego sets should be just aas useful to built yor wn creations as the set.
It always surprised me that many people aren't fans of mixing system and technic. To me it's just a great way to build. Are there any cool non-SW sets that do this sort of blending or is this mostly driven by them trying to get the authentic look right?
This was the first UCS Star Wars set I built [I have since built the UCS Star Destroyer and Falcon], and while the Falcon holds the slight edge for me as far as building and displaying goes, the AT-AT was a LOT of fun - and now I know why - it's mostly Technic! I love Technic builds! FWIW, the UCS Falcon had a great mix of greebling [details] and structural building, while the Star Destroyer was structure and then large panel after large panel, and it got boring. The AT-AT has all that, plus way more playability than the Falcon or SD. I hope future UCS Star Wars sets follow this model [pun intended] in having great building experiences with some playability and display options.
First video of yours that I've seen. Nice build and review. I've built a number of UCS sets and yes they all have a lot of technic pieces which makes sense because without them you'd never get the right strength to weight ratio or it would take so many more pieces that it eats into the profits.
Yep, Technic parts are the best to make a skeleton for large structures, that's why they are used in almost all bigger builds. What makes this one special is their usage to provide working functions.
The interior looks like EXACTLY like the technical lay outs in the star wars books ( I wonder if I still have them!) Those were REALLY freaking cool :D !!!
The panels are diagonal, as each upper leg mirrors its diagonal opposite. So the front-left and rear-right are identical and vice-versa. I suspect it's an ease-of-production thing, or to distinguish them during the assembly phase from the other diagonal.
Thanks racingbrick for this review of the UCS AT-AT and as a fan of the technic / creator expert line, the AT-AT is very nice but I would take the 10294 lego because it is a wonderful lego.😍😍😍😍 The AT-AT rims look good on both lego 42110 and 42125 and you are right that the AT-AT is full of technic / creator expert bits.
Great video. I'm also happy about the lot of colors, not only when build a set the first time, even more when building it the second time. I do not have enough space so i have to disassemble the sets. When now building it a second time, it is much more easier with colored bricks.
4:28 the turntable is also used in the guardians of the Galaxy ship (model 76193) as part of its display base, while that ship isnt in the UCS collection it is definitely built with the same quality.
Whoa! That's a lotta technic 😲...I'm glad I didn't watch any other review of the AT-AT till now, this set had to be reviewed by a Technic reviewer like you or Sariel fo' sure ☺️...your humour had me cracking up as always 😆...was hoping for a shout out to our good friend Tiago too 😋, but maybe next time 🙏🏼
I like those pieces with the internal gear teeth. I would love to get some internal ring gear pieces. There's alot of potential to build planetary gear sets which I have yet to see in a lego set.
The only AT-AT sets to _not_ be Technic-in-disguise are the mini models (because tiny) and the Dark Side Developer Kit version (which isn't disguised).
10:33 Yes, this lighting design can be in something else besides the Death Star. It actually can be seen inside the AT-AT in the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order videogame
I like how the Star Wars and Technic kind grew together. Before the SW theme was launched Lego Techic was mainly functional, the pieces were either used structural, mechanical or as a connection, the design was very barebones and generic. These days the Technic sets are more like a SW set, replicating a very particular vehicle with lots of effort and pieces dedicated to making it look right. I think we/Lego lost something valuable with that replacements, we could have had both the Lego Models/Replicas/Collection and the more functional Lego Technic. I have several Lego SW sets, most aren’t UCS. I wouldn’t classify the majority as Techic, as the technic parts are used mainly structural. The exemption are BD-1 and the X-wing (75301). BD-1 main feature is its Lego Technic Based posability, and for the X-wings is the synchronized open and closing of the wings. Come to thing if it Blacktron II also had Technic elements is some of it’s sets.
I won't be splashing out on this expensive one, I am pretty happy with my relatively tiny 75288 AT-AT, which fits nicely in my tiny living space. I personally expect underlying Technics structures for a lot of the larger LEGO kits, and I enjoy the way the two systems easily intertwine.
I just received the r2d2 set from a few years ago. It has a really cool way to drop the middle leg down I think you’d appreciate if you have the 200 to use on it. Its about the size of larger technic vehicle and is a really cute display piece.
Great video, really enjoyed it! I did want to point out that your middle row of seats is one stud to far to the side, it should be centered. I make that mistake all of the time with my builds and have to go back and pull things up and place them again.
Great video and review! I found it a very difficult and tricky build. Some pieces didn't fit. Also same issue as you the belly underside keeps falling off if you touch it. Can you confirm if you have any gaps on the back when the side plates come together? mine has like a 5mm gap when viewing from the back. Any advice will be appreciated!
I love this set it's still for sale here in Asia with a free light sabre though I would prefer the Titanic even though I have a lot of old Star Wars stuff back in Australia.
Sajnos más leírásokban is találkozom hibákkal. Itt van mindjárt a Battle Pack. Ahogy te is, úgy én is keveseltem a katonákat bele.
While I appreciate the approach of this kit being a Technic kit, really many larger regular kits could not be built without their Technic skeleton. The UCS Falcon, the Razor Crest, etc., are totally dependent on Technic elements. This approach made for a great review though.
Same goes for the UCS Star Destroyer.
ALL the big AT-AT sets have been Technic-dependent. It's the only way to economically achieve the volume and articulation.
The large Slave I model also uses a Technic framework to make it work, especially that angled part of the hull.
Did you pronounce lego sets kits?
Razercrest actually didn’t feel like it had a whole lot of technic. Yeah, there was some in most areas, but it didn’t feel like a lot

That set has a lot of technic structure inside and the legs are super strong

the way the ankles are genuinely the same mechanism that the real thing would have is beautiful.
I wish they would already make a mechanised Technic version of it. 4 legged walker seems like the one of the easiest walkers to make
It may seem easy and Lego already produced a motorized AT-AT walker all the way back in 2007... buuut the hardest thing to get right with this walker is its complex walk cycle. Besides the logistical reasons, using bright colours makes it much less easy to make mistakes during the building proces!

I am very satisfied with my 75288 AT-AT. Best AT AT beside UCS version.
Great review! I cant see the issue with using technic parts. Its common now days to have technic pieces in more advanced builds.
I know the Imperial Shuttle (75302) set I got relatively recently has plenty of them.
Great review as always 🤩

I have the Bucket Wheel Excavator and I thought THAT was huge. The AT-AT dwarfs it!
Does making a bearing out of new curved gear racks and round 1x1 tiles makes any sense? Or 60t turntable is not much smaller in comparison?

Ha old school Technic construction inside :D
