I bet it's part of the "commercialism" joke, where they thought: what's the most generic TV ad voice we can get? Still, I bet the commercial would be more successful if SW had Elton John just record one more line: "Hello, I am Elton John. Here you see Steven Wilson's new album. Buy the deluxe edition box set."
I am a sound engineer myself and this is the best sounding album I ever heard! Some sounds are like a knife in my ears - amazing. Dynamics are extraordinary. After listening to the album here on YT, I bought it immediately and I don't regret it. Also like the music a lot. This is not a paid comment, this is, what I am truly thinking. Thank you Steven and others - excellent album and especially sound. Check out Minimal Man S*x with God or My bloody valentine, this is my bloody valentine - that's me, long time ago and not with the possibilities of today.
@@richardthresh3587 I contacted my local Royal Mail delivery office & got my postie to open it & play it down her phone so I didn't have to wait for it to be delivered.
Just had my first full listen and I enjoyed it way more than I thought I was going to. I should know better by now that no matter how much the teaser tracks throw a curveball I'm still going to get a Steven Wilson album. I absolutely love the XTC vibe on Follower. So many cool little production touches everywhere. King Ghost is brilliant, and Count of Unease is beautiful. A perfect downbeat SW closing track. There's a lot to unpack here. I love that despite the pop/electronic veneer there's such a strong undercurrent of dark foreboding woven through the whole affair. That magic Wilson melancholy. Got to the end and immediately started over from the beginning. Brilliant work as always.
it took a while to grow on me. first listen i was disappointed, but the more i listened the more i started to love it. i dont think it’s as powerful as To The Bone or Hand. Cannot. Erase. but it’s more proof for me that Steven Wilson can basically do no wrong.
I had to listen to the iTunes pre-order on a Wonderboom in two sittings whilst working - I’m an audiophile who couldn’t wait!!! The deluxe and LP are now here and, holy crap that’s a good deluxe!!! I think it was all worth the wait. I’m happy you didn’t rush the release, although this wasn’t how it was planned I’m sure. However, such a bright light during bleak times. Thank you for sharing your art - it makes a difference x
I was waiting for some of the songs to really catch my ear, and then the album was over without it happening. Maybe it will grow on me like many of my favorite albums, or maybe I'll just forget it.
@@7EEVEE I'm already liking it better. Conceptually it may be his best solo work yet. I also like how it is a short and direct (art)pop album, unlike To the Bone which was a little long and heavier at the end (even thought I love People who eat darkness and Detonation). I'm a sucker for Grace for Drowning, Storm Corrosion and everything Porcupine Tree, so I'm still not used to SW being bright, stratighforward and concise like this, but I think the groundwork for this album has been present on his older stuff for quite a time (I mean, listen to Jupiter Island, it's basically Follower lol).
@@felipimacedo Try listening to the deluxe version. 19 minutes full song remix of Personal shopper, 8 minute extended version of King Ghost all mixed by Steven! Check them out!
We listened to it last night and my partner, who is not a huge SW fan, quite enjoyed it. She did say that it is more commercial than anything else of his she has heard, but that probably won't hurt album sales!
First spin, it fits everything you've done in to 1 album I even hear hints of the Blade Runner soundtrack in the first 2 tracks Different again, but still very much You 👍😃
How did the focus group react to this? How was the demographics? This album success is anacronic to its content. That's indeed deep stuff Steven. Like breaking the fourth wall in a way.
The one thing I love about him is that there is no such thing as a "focus group". He does what he wants to do. Always has, always will. That's why he is still incredible.
Loved the album. It is so much representative of the modern world. The techno-like kick, the redux-electronic music-aarpeggiator, the modern bold minimal packaging and design language. The corporate dress-up. The collaboration with the great Jess Cope. And then the music and art of course which is like a whole new universe after entering through this wormhole. One of the best albums of all time regardless of genre. Period.
As much as I got to hand it to Steven for not cornering himself artistically.... This is not "OK computer for the amazon age". Whoever wrote that should be fucking ashamed! 😂
@@irena7777777 The absolute irony of that coming from Prog Magazine too. Probably seething through their teeth publishing it because it'll take up pages for the Jethro Tull stories...
@@richardthresh3587 Eh... It's not a great concept seeing how he'll inevitably profit from this. It's like when he wrote FOABP with Porcupine Tree. Don't get me wrong, great album, but it was a Forty year old man writing about Medicated teenagers... Not the best lyrically really...
I know we all have different tastes in many different aspects of life - such as music - and I don't know you personally of course, but I'm inclined to assume you're a SW fan and have probably listened to at least 1 or 2 other solo albums of his catalogue. With that said, can you really go as far as saying this is "the best solo thing he's done" when comparing it to The Raven or HCE? I already heard the album and appreciate his change of pace and the bravery to evolve to something different, but it is VERY subpar for what we've come to expect from SW. Again, I know everyone's entitled to their own opinion and there's no rights or wrongs, just opinions, but "the best solo thing he's done" I feel is a very bold statement.
@@Tobaaarr Isn't a patch on The Raven or HCE imo. Even his other solo albums are better I'd say. There's a few good songs on this one but that's it for me. I think Wilson is desperate to be a Bowie type figure. Needs to do better if that's the aim
Steven, I've purchased several of your more acclaimed albums and, try as I might, your music in unremarkable. Try doing something that hasn't been done - before.
So weird seeing him alienating his audience so directly, and seemingly on purpose. Couple that with the condescending, mean spirited remarks he’s made about his own fans lately and the whole thing comes across very poorly. Hell, even one of the songs on the album is a middle finger to his imagined boogeyman fan that can only take a remake of raven or in absentia. I think people would be fine with a different genre if it wasn’t a big cringe fest.
lame and boring....pseudo pop with short and simple songs that express little and lack the emotion, darkness and complexity of his golden age with Raven and Hand cannot...not to say the magnificent Porcupine Tree era. I being following Steven for 14 years now, attended 13 concerts and have all his vinyl and cds releases...this will be the first one I will not purchase. I hope for next albums to be as challenging and deep as past works and not this radio friendly flat stuff. This is not music evolution, it is just simplistic and random stuff. I am quite sad.
