Hey man go for it, there is no time like the present.. like the comment above it really isn’t as hard as you think it’s going to be.. but it’s the mastering it that takes time and you can only master it by playing live blackjack in a casino (or simulated at home/with a friend to act as a real casino)

It’s really easy to learn how to count cards, it’s extremely hard to actually sit down at a legal table and get a count going. When I’m doing it it’s obvious because I have to concentrate so hard on every card and the count

I don't frequent casinos and only play online from time to time when drinking with friends. I view it as affordable fun, but I appreciate the resources here so I can at least feel like I'm limiting my entertainment costs. I've been using your basic strategy and card counting trainers and working on my own trainer as a little side project. Writing some code to play basic strategy in a human way actually helped solidify the rules in my mind a bit more.

I like to idle in a room sometimes and just use it as a practice drill in the lead up to a real casino visit. I don't bet and I get booted from the room often for idling but it still gives me the practice. Collen, I 100% agree with you on what you sad i would also add in:
Online gambling/casinos are evil and for suckers. They are unregulated and the games can be simply fixed to increase the house advantage. Blackjack is a good example. The more 10 cards they remove from the decks the more the house advantage increases. Additionally, almost all videos depict players with casino compted or fake money. The players get to keep a small portion of the compted maney as compensation for advertising the casino. They also get a revenue stream from each click on their casino link that signs-up a new sucker. The bottom line in that online casinos are scams.

I have played at live dealer online casino before it became illegal in my area( Maine). Rules were blackjack paid 3:2, dealer standing on all 17s, split up to 4 times, double after split allowed, re-split aces, and 95% deck penetration. This was about 10 to 15 years ago though so I’m sure that they changed their rules to benefit themselves.

It's not groundbreaking top secret info AND casinos LOVE people THINKING they can count cards. It takes a lot of memory and practice and concentration in a live environment (other punters don't keep quiet for you). Also you have to hide the fact you're counting or casinos WILL ban you immediately nationwide - your picture on a blacklist for life.
Done RIGHT a card counter can win but he/she is always aware that there can be a tap on the shoulder at any moment ending their career.
And that's just YOUR actions. You may be living the dream until some idiot beside you at the table just happens to blurt out something about card counting - blowing your cover. What do you do in a HIGHLY advantage situation DEEP into the shoe - Max bet every hand until the shuffle (like you should, and you've waited ALL night for such a shoe) or cash in your chips and protect your career. Either way looks suspicious to the casino on the hunt for counters and your risk of that shoulder tap just sky-rocketed - don't forget no matter what you do they have all your footage on camera leading up to that.
Security? Review this guy's play for the past 7 hours - think we've got a counter.

So I’ve plaid online blackjack for about the last 2 months…. Everything seems to be the exact same as in person, but you can’t surrender, the usually go about 3 decks? Maybe? They switch out dealers like every 30-45 min. And some dealers are slow while others are really skilled dealers. Now I know you didn’t ask, but some of the dealers do a great job making it feel like in person BJ, and those dealers I tend to win most with. I find it a little bit easier to literally predict a high vs low card based off watching 2 rounds, and playing 2… I don’t count, I want to learn, but I think the fact that maybe the amount of cards shown before shuffle being less than a real casino makes it less likely to guess a low when a high is coming. Another weird thing I’ve noticed is that a majority of the time, if you hit and are given an ace, there’s a high chance of a low card coming after.
Lol just what I’ve seen from playing daily for a couple months!
One major plus is that you can play 5 dollar hands and make 25 last over a span of week. It’s too convenient, but I use it for training for a real casino trip I plan in the future ;)

Hey Colin (or any other AP with more experience than me😀), I have a question on rounding and flooring during TC conversion. Basically, what I'm asking is: isn't it overly conservative to both floor the number of decks in the discard tray (=round up the number of remaining decks/the denominator) and also floor the true count, as you are constantly underestimating the true TC?
For a more detailed explanation what I mean: There are two processes of rounding involved: rounding the number of remaining decks (let's say to the nearest integer for simplicity) to find the denominator and rounding the quotient (RC/decks) to get an integer for the TC. For the second step, you always round down (floor the quotient), i.e. with 3 decks remaining a RC of 8 gives a TC of 2 and a RC of -1 gives a TC of -1. But what about the other rounding process? Let's say the RC is 8 again. If there are 1.9 decks in the discard tray in a 6 deck shoe game, there are 4.1 decks left to play. Do you really round that up to 5 decks left or rather down to 4 decks left? In another video on TC conversion, I remember you said something like "there aren't 2 decks in the discard tray yet, so you still divide by 5". Don't you want to get closest to the true TC, in this case 8/4.1=1.95, to choose betting size and playing deviations? If you work with 4 decks remaining, you would get 8/4=2, and with 5 decks remaining, you get 8/5=1 (after flooring), but the estimated 2 is closer to the true TC, so 4 decks remaining is the better estimate. In this case you would take a little more risk as the true TC is not yet exactly 2, but if you bet like you still hadn't the advantage (as a TC of 1) you may also lose some of the advantage/some EV.
Also: what do you do if there are 4.5 decks in the discard tray/1.5 decks left, at a RC of say 6. Using half deck estimates you'd find a true TC of 4, but you can get estimates of 3 and 6, depending whether you round the number of remaining decks up to 2 or down to 1. So the way one rounds the denominator has huge influence on the playing decision. (In this example, you could argue that's why you should learn how to divide by half decks in the second half of the shoe, but I could then construct the question in a way that I ask whether to round your quarter decks up or down. The difference would be smaller, not TC= 3 or 6 like above, but the question is still there.)

      @m1j4s 3 роки тому

Very good question. I think you're on the right track for thinking about this that deeply. Like the previous comment answered, maybe a customized bet between your given spreads for the 2-3 true count range let's say.
You could always round up to the more precise true counts where you see fit, just remember that going with the bigger bets then, it will put u at a higher risk of negative swings, just as it would increase your EV. So remember to resize your bet sizes if the negative side of variance is hitting hard.
If you are very disciplined with your approach I think you could maximize the EV with this as you say. Just be aware of how it will also effect the down swings.

Actually i used to play some of my sports bet winnings in online blackjack. First i just kept looking at the current shoe whilst typing every card in a card counting app so i get to see the current count. It was at Tipico online casino and the cutting cards were somewhere around the middle, so most often they dealt like 4-5 decks before reshuffling. I just listened to music and kept following the card count and if it happened to be a true +2 or higher i grabbed a seat at the table. It is true that since they deal only about the half shoe, even if the count is raised, you dont get to abuse it properly. But i remember one time i was playing with a true count of +5 or even +6 and i remember my app told me to split my 10s and not hit my 15 and stuff that is not normal in basic strategy. In this one exception of a really high count it worked nuts. I believe from 20€ i made it to 120€ in a few hands or so. But generally speaking it sometimes was also just a waste of time and the true count sometimes never went above a true +1 for example. But sometimes it did work out. This was all back in 2016/17, now online casinos got banned in germany anyway so i couldnt try it again, but i dont really want to anyway. This was kind of fun when i was at university and younger, now i dont really want to gamble anymore, i just put a tiny little bit of money for some sports betting on the side, but by far not as much as i did back then when i was a student :p

Here's one thing about online blackjack that I think is interesting that this video doesn't touch on. Rather than being able to do a hi-lo count, when it comes to online blackjack, you can literally track every single card (rainman style).
I wonder if there's a system for when you can literally track every single card that remains in the shoe. Such as how many 4s, 5s, 6s are left, and in fact, you can get a perfect count on what the deck penetration is. You can know down to the exact number, how many cards are left in that shoe.

There are two more points about online casinos that change the math a lot:
    a) You can have the most insane bet spreads. Just let other people play until your +EV then sit at every open hand playing table limit - they dont care
    b) The high limit tables will have the pit boss walk over and replace the shoe at a good enough count. I litterally saw one that was spot on a true +6 shuffled every single shoe. The house is litterally counting cards back.

I would recommend it when you have shoe and at least 6 decks and shuffling on at least after 4 decks, its as easy as in the casino, in fact, even easier. The only issue with online blackjack is: time, you take more time and the players too so less rounds per hour.

Counting online is not going to be profitable BUT there are a few minor things worth mentioning. It may actually be beneficial for those NEW to card counting and I say this for multiple reasons:
    A) You don't have the pressure of having people, cameras, pit bosses, looking at you. No loud screaming, drunken banter from the guy sitting at 2nd base, etc.
    B) The cards are left on the table for the entire hand, so newbies don't have to "guess" about what the guy next to him had because he didn't see and that guy busted.
I personally might play an hour or two online if I'm a bit "rusty" and haven't played in a year and am before I go to Vegas/AC. Not to actually count to have an edge, but just to make sure my ADHD brain can still do it.
As for rules, no they aren't *great* but I'll take them over the Strip. 3:2 $10 min, Surrender available, DAS, dealer stands on all 17s. Really honestly the rules might even be considered "above average" considering what trash games are out there in the real world. Now the penetration is horrible (maybe 50% if lucky) which counteracts the counting. I have had some okay TCs but it takes the first two hands being all trash to accomplish that, and even then you're lucky to MAYBE get 3 hands in if the table is fairly empty.
As far as rounds per hour, I completely disagree with the notion that it's slower than the real world. I would put it on par if not quicker. there's no waiting for people coloring up, or waiting on the 21 year old decide for 7 minutes if he should split his 10s, or for the pit boss to check change, or for the drunk guy to fumble around to look for a $1 to tip the waitress only to knock over his drink and now we gotta wait for the table to get cleaned. Now the rounds per hour MAY go down online if the table is full but overall id say they equal out. Most of the time online they have someone shuffling the used shoe as soon as the cut card is out and the hand is over. Maybe 1 out of 20 you may have to wait for a shuffle, and it's usually at really crazy late or early hours.

If card counting isn't illegal but casinos frown on people that do it and if the card counters gets caught, why then do the casinos usually ban that player for life?

I’ve tried online blackjack when I first started counting... 6 decks, dealer hits on soft seventeen, but they would shuffle the deck once they went through three decks... was terrible. Also it’s very slow

I'm not a card counter as i couldn't pass grade 10 math , nor do I play blackjack that often, however just curious as to why wouldn't casino's ALWAYS use short deck penetration to combat card counting?

Shuffling takes time, time spent shuffling is time that non-advantaged players won’t be loosing money. As the vast majority of players aren’t advantaged its a balancing act. If you’re shuffling every 2 decks and doing that across all your tables at all your locations that adds up really fast

    Even worse.
Some cheat by sliding up the first card to pick up the second if the first is an ace, to save for the dealer Blackjack.
Some don't use full decks, using less face cards.
And some add in extra trash cards.
Most people don't notice because you need to be counting every suit to keep track of it.

I feel like you could you sue a casino if you got mathematical proof that the deck was rigged.
Like 10-100k hands would give you very solid proof if even just a couple of cards were changed.

Hi Colin, for practicing counting, is using free-to-play blackjack a good way to practice the strategies of counting? If so, do you have any recommendations as to what app?

Short answer: YOU CAN, I DID IT, IT WORKS!
Pros: you can just use a free card counting app.
    Cons: Yes, returns are lower...
Best games to count: Free bet BJ and Infinite BJ by Evolution Gaming. You can do wonging the whole time.
