This! We train professional players, but we know most players out there are hobbyists who just want to improve their game a bit to enjoy their time at the tables longer. That can be accomplished just by following the odds and removing some of the casino's edge.

There are different "Basic Strategy" charts out there, so how do we know which "Basic Strategy (BS)" chart or card to follow? For example, your BS card said that you should double down on a soft 18 when the dealer shows a 2-6. My BS chart (from a book by a well-respected gambling author) says to (i) stay on a dealer's 2, 3, 7, 8, or Ace when I have a soft 18, (ii) double-down on a dealer's 4 - 6, and (iii) hit a 9 or 10. So, again, how do we know which of the different Basic Strategies is the best one to follow? Thank you!
Is double soft 18 against a 2 new? Thought that one was a stay. Loved this video I can't stand people playing scared and standing on every 15 or 16 they get its so aggravating. I stopped playing blackjack at my local casino, small town and people are terrible at the game and always make snarky comments when I hit 12 against 2/3 lmao
Not new. But it is a very close play. The options on A7 vs 2 are doubling or standing. Hitting is not advisable. Charts of the H17 rule will say to double. S17 charts will tell you to stand. And under various counts, there'd be index number plays under both sets of rules..
Look its easy. if a dealer is showing a 10 you have to assume the dealers face down card is a face card/or another 10 you have to play to 17 regardless
Insurance is the worst mistake I never take it it's the hand that people tell me take it and even counting at plus 20 I'd never because the most important is to maintain mindset not individual hands
in some cases 11 vs 10 isn't a double its only if they peek the 10 here in the UK 11 vs 10 is hit only because of potental BJ we also dont have surrender

I went to a casino in Pennsylvania, which I live in New Jersey, so I I’m used to Atlantic City I know that a dealer has to hit on a 16 so I was at a casino in the Poconos so I played at a blackjack table and the dealer had a 6 showing and I had 12 i was the third person to get a card. There was four of us at the table and a picture card has not been seen at all yet so I wanted to stay at 12 and the guy to the left of me ( last guy before dealers turn )says to me you have to hit on 12 .. i’m thinking to myself Is this some kind of different blackjack? I’m in a different state so I’m like OK I was dumb because the dealer also said it too you have to hit on 12 so I trusted the dealer knew the “”rule “ to this different type of blackjack, so I hit and I got a picture card which I knew it was coming because one has yet to be seen so I got up and I was like I fucking knew it I said what was I thinking I could stay on a five I could stay on six I don’t have to hit on nothing if I don’t want to, so I hit and I busted All right so then the guy next to me won the dealer busted… I was so pissed off like what kind of fucking blackjack goes on over here so I went to another blackjack table. I went up to the dealer I go is this some different kind of blackjack you guys play in Pennsylvania he goes Miss, blackjack is blackjack wherever you go. I said go get me a pit boss now.!!!!! he came I said go watch the video I wanted to stay on 12 I voiced it. I even moved my hand. The guy next to me said I have to hit on 12 and then the dealers that I have to hit on 12 so I’m gonna trust the dealer because why would a dealer lie to me and they had such good surveillance. They can even hear you talking and when I first wanted to stay, I did move my hand to stand and clearly voiced it. At the same time I said, stick and moved my hand, you know where my whole hand passing over my hand of cards that means stand I wanna stand and I told him that so they went up to look at it took them about a half hour …they come down and say whoever you’re with you could all go eat anywhere here for free. I got double my money back that I bet and that dealer was removed and never to be seen again… then later I see that JerkOFFFF that was sitting on the left side of me coming out of the bathroom and I said hey Jerkoff , why did you tell me I had to hit on 12 you piece of shit and he just kept walking…. I started talking to a lot of people there. They said you gotta watch these dealers out here I go That’s how it is over here. Well you know what I’m not coming back. I’ll stick with Atlantic City. See you later. and by the way, later on, I was physically thrown out by security one had one arm, one had the other arm down the escalator out the door. Don’t worry you’re not gonna see me again anyway, you don’t have to fucking throw me out you grimy bastards.. I should call the gaming commission on you on all your dealers u dicks!!!because one guy had 18… the dealer had 17 so all of a sudden she went to grab his money and she said 19 u lose but she didn’t have 19 she had 17 and the guy said whoa whoa whoa grabbed her hand and said you got 17 I have 18 I win … i said oh my God really ?? I’m not playing shit here because the only thing in here to play is slot machines and slot machines are for suckers and I’m not playing Texas hold em I don’t have enough money. Actually I don’t even want to even be in this casino anymore. I’m so disgusted.
I'm a dealer 30+ years and it blows me away how many dealers AND floor supervisors who don't know basic strategy. I'm of the mind that it's part of the dealer's job to know it.
If basic strategy is the best way to play (other than counting cards) why would casinos encourage you to do it? They want to make the most amount of money possible.
I get intimidated going into the casino with all the different Blackjack variants. I don't know what they are. What is traditional Blackjack called? I remember walking around the casinos on the strip and I could not find original or traditional blackjack
@Blackjackapprenticeship OK cool. I'm going to Vegas tomorrow. I have no reservation set anywhere cuz I haven't decided where to go yet. Do you have any recommendations? I'm going mainly to play blackjack. I'm from Eastern NC
99% of the people in the casino I work in are terrible blackjack players. They bet 50 on the hand, 25 on the pair, and 25 in the 21+3. Most people waive 12 vs 2 and 3, the vast majority waive A7 vs 9 through ace, dont double their eleven, I can go on and on.
What deviation did you use to surrender 14 vs D 10? 15 vs D 10 is at a positive running count. 16 vs D 10 is a surrender (there is a deviation but I’m not sure it’s worth learning). We’re you counting at least?
I like that you're going back to basics rather than explaining more about card counting. It's a nice welcome to those who are new to this channel. Here's how I explain hitting vs. standing on hard totals to new players: Fours, fives, and sixes are up cards that most frequently bust, so you never hit anything that can bust. Sevens and higher don't bust often, so you hit up to 16s. Twos and threes are kind of in-between, so you hit on 12s but nothing higher.
Guilty of the splitting 9s vs 7. It always gets me, it's the one hand. In my mind for some reason no matter how much I remind myself, my gut instinct is split. But I have to slow down.
Yeah. The ‘get more money on the table’ strategy. But he’s right - better to just accept the likely win vs trying to win double and messing it up. Obviously if the deck is super rich in 10’s then go for it.
I'm a dealer and people get upset when another player asks what they're supposed to do and I tell them they should hit a 12 against a 3 or hit a soft 18 against a 10. Those are definitely the two most common ones experienced players have very strong and wrong opinions about.
@@evrimenustun9548 can you explain the reason behind always splitting 8s? aren't you normally expecting the next card to be worth 10 so you then have 18 and 18 Vs the say the dealers 10 most likely will make 20 doubling your loss?
@@nickbates1571 chances of both of your split 8s losing against the dealer are less than losing with a single 16 which is simply the riskiest number to stand on.
I don’t give a damn what other players say. If I have a 12 vs 2 or 12 vs 3 I’m hitting that all day long because it comes down to probability. You have a better chance of getting a higher hand than actually busting
How about a better video title. Like: "Blackjack Hands Beginners Play Wrong". I thought you were gonna dish some secrets. The title implies a much broader viewing audience than the content actually meant for. Yeah I said it! I know it's nitpicking and I have no issue with the quality of you content... but it just bugs me. Sorry...
I had two 8s against dealer 8. The dealer told me not to split. He asked the pit boss what the book said and the pit boss said to split. Thought that was kind of odd.
I thought I played pretty much perfect basic strategy just to realize I’ve been playing soft 18 wrong in many circumstances! Thanks for the great video as always
Took the advice, doubled my a-7, everyone at the table was mad, dealer acted like I was splitting face cards, then I lost the hand and they all laughed…😂
How does one know whether or not a particular blackjack table allows for players to surrender? Basic strategy says to surrender a hand totaling 16 versus a 9, 10 or ace and also a 15 versus a 10, if surrender is an option.
The vast majority of casinos don't allow it. You might be more likely to get the option for it if playing high limit but even then it's pretty rare to find.
Most of the times I get a 12, if I hit , there comes a 10 😂 I play online live blackjack, and all the times I stood when I got over 11, the next person would get a 10, it happened about 5 times, and when I decided to hit on a 12, I busted 😅
Is there an advantage to tipping a dealer? Will they help you later? Like maybe “miscount” and “accidentally” pay you after you lose? Other than feeling generous after a win, do we tip just to be nice to a low-income employee?

Very good information with my over four decades worth of experience working for the house many of these people really need to know how to properly play the game of blackjack the right way...aka high low.
What I love about blackjack is you can be above/about average with the basics and it's not a stretch to be good with experience... and that's without any kind of card counting.
I like to play Blackjack since it has one of the lowest house advantages if played right. Knowing the odds on a hand and being disciplined about how you should play that hand is key to keeping that house advantage to a minimum. Easier said than done. I got several good tips from this video! As far as card counting, it seems most casinos today have strategies to counter that with such things as using machines that constantly re-shuffle the decks for instance.
Hit a 12 against a dealer's 2 and you will more than likely pull a 10-valued card and bust. The dealer flips over his cards and he has 12 too. The dealer pulls an 8. The table is pissed at you. The rest of the shoe is crap because of that 1 hand. It's best just to leave it be because that stress of the table hating you will cause you to play irrational and lose more money.
So glad A-7 was on the title card. I've lost track of the number of people who shake their heads and/or mutter something when I hit it. I remember one said "it's hard enough to beat the casino without people hitting their 18's" LOL.
Keep hitting them against 9 10 A. 4 cards keep you the same 3 make you stronger and 1 makes you just slightly weaker. That’s 8 out of 13. How many times does the dealer have 17 with a 9-10 or A.
i just gotta say that when me and my friend play blackjack, we got a rule that says: no matter the dealer's hand, if you got 12 double. It's been effective and idk why.
Good video and very good to see I had most of them correct. The only part that leaves me thinking is the hit on 15 or 16 if the dealer has a 10. If you hit, you risk busting or hitting a low card (A, 2, or 3) and still can end up losing. I would rather take only one risk and hope the dealer busts.
I had a dealer give me dirty looks because I hit a 12 against his 3 up and yeah he thought I was crazy lol an hour later I was up too 500 from 60 lol 😂
I get kinda conservative on my 12s vs 2 or 3, or soft 18's. But I've seen players split 10's, and I happened to sit in that same table and my turn was approaching and dealt a 12 against 3. I just hit my 12. Everyone else got pissed that I ruined the cards, but the guy who split the 10s already killed it.

I learned the hard way to always hit that 12 against a dealer’s 10.
I like your dog vs bear analogy…mine was “have some balls and go like a man or lose like a pussy”😅😂
Thanks for uploading! Gave me a great dopamine hit seeing that notification pop up.
I have no problems taking the 1st hit, it's after the hit that makes me wonder. How many hits should I take? 🤔
My one mantra in blackjack is “Ducks always battle back”, which is why I hit when I have 12 vs a 2.
Haha! I use so many weird sayings for stranger combinations too. Love it
God bless this man ❤
I've played blackjack a little but everytime there's always those people running their mouth saying "oh you shouldn't of hit that" or "you should of hit so the rest of us would of won" that's why I'm a baccarat player 😂
Great video. Thank you i was playing soft 18 wrong
One hand i hate is 17 vs a 10. I really want to hit cause i know im dead in the water. Its amazing howxmany times i fid mot hit it and a 4 was the next card.bim hitting it from now on
All his content is to help beginner players with odds in our favor. Just make sure you stick to the odds and don’t veer off based on instinct. You will regret it.
This! We train professional players, but we know most players out there are hobbyists who just want to improve their game a bit to enjoy their time at the tables longer. That can be accomplished just by following the odds and removing some of the casino's edge.
I Saw many double when dealer have A or Picture , I wouldn’t have a clue why
I remember seeing this guy's videos exposing the pit bosses 😂
I played last night my first ever table and it was going good for alittle with just me and one other player. Then two other people sat down and started dogging me about nor hitting and what not.
This guy speaks the truth
my mistakes are staying on soft 18 and staying on 12 vs 2/3, i used to 12 hit but 22 has burned me so many times. but at least i wont be doing these mistakes anymore
I learnt a lot in this video!
3:00 what’s that dealer smoking lmao. “I’ll buy insurance depending on what the dealer is showing”, you mean an ace my guy?😂
The best strategy is play by the rules of Basic strategy if you are winning and don't play the rules if you are losing.
Great guide. However, you should have stressed that when you have a blackjack against a dealer's Ace upcard, he will offer you even money. That's the same "side bet" with the same bad odds and should never be taken.
would have been interesting to hear what to do in that spot against a rich deck
@@mpup54 Sadly I do not count cards. There are only two local casinos and I would not want to lose access to either. Playing perfect strategy After years of play I am about even cash wise, plus I get the many comps. Cheap and valued entertainment.
Thank you!
Great video!
What's the torque specifications on those that's why I watched this instead of reading specs book
Look its easy. if a dealer is showing a 10 you have to assume the dealers face down card is a face card/or another 10 you have to play to 17 regardless
I don't know how to play Blackjack, but I would have doubled A7 😂
The best home friendly blackjack game I played was I made a 1000 bet and the dealer busted it was the best bet I ever made
I once split 9's against a small up card (I think it was a 3);and someone said, " what the hell are you doing splitting 9's???"
Insurance is the worst mistake I never take it it's the hand that people tell me take it and even counting at plus 20 I'd never because the most important is to maintain mindset not individual hands
very interesting video
How are you counting cards where there are automatic shuffle machines everywhere (Las Vegas)?
When the guy said he will sometimes take insurance depending on what the dealer is showing... ???? dealer can only be showing ace my guy
Please tell me how to join your apprenticeship program.
Should always count the cards.
I'm confused basic strategy says to stand against a 12 on a 3.
in some cases 11 vs 10 isn't a double its only if they peek the 10 here in the UK 11 vs 10 is hit only because of potental BJ we also dont have surrender
also always avoid 6-5 like the plageue
I enjoyed the 1st part about hitting a 12 vs. 2 etc but.. was hoping you pointed out that really dumb players then think you are supposed to hit a 13 vs. a 2, nope ! Are they simply dyslexic?
Soft 18 against a dealer 2? Double, unless dealer stands on soft 17 (in which case, stand). Right?
Yep.
I'm a dealer 30+ years and it blows me away how many dealers AND floor supervisors who don't know basic strategy. I'm of the mind that it's part of the dealer's job to know it.
I'm new to playing 21, where do you get the two charts you showed. Thanks
The charts can be found here: www.blackjackapprenticeship.com/blackjack-strategy-charts/
@@Blackjackapprenticeship thanks
Beautiful video. Thank you.
If basic strategy is the best way to play (other than counting cards) why would casinos encourage you to do it? They want to make the most amount of money possible.
You cannot generate equity with basic strategy alone so they don't care if you use it. To have an edge you have to also count.
I get intimidated going into the casino with all the different Blackjack variants. I don't know what they are. What is traditional Blackjack called? I remember walking around the casinos on the strip and I could not find original or traditional blackjack
Vegas strip is the wrong place to try to play, it's mostly variants and 6:5 blackjack games on the strip to to take advantage of tourists.
The best move is to stay away from the tables. 100% winner.
Hitting 12v2 and 12v3 and Soft 18 vs 9,10,A = instant verbal abuse from other ploppies. 😂Gotta have a thick skin for this game!
Facts, say so but hitting that 12v2 or 3 they call you stupid same goes for 18 soft against 9,10, or ace
A ploppy threatened me for surrendering my H14, H15 and H16 against 10s throughout a bad shoe.
What deviation did you use to surrender 14 vs D 10?
15 vs D 10 is at a positive running count. 16 vs D 10 is a surrender (there is a deviation but I’m not sure it’s worth learning).
We’re you counting at least?
Ironically, standing it when it's +EV is also verbal abuse from ploppies, I'm surprised he didn't even touch on it here
Yes happens to me all the time.
I like that you're going back to basics rather than explaining more about card counting. It's a nice welcome to those who are new to this channel.
Here's how I explain hitting vs. standing on hard totals to new players:
Fours, fives, and sixes are up cards that most frequently bust, so you never hit anything that can bust. Sevens and higher don't bust often, so you hit up to 16s. Twos and threes are kind of in-between, so you hit on 12s but nothing higher.
Stick to the chart. There are plenty of situations where you hit with 12-16.
@@tjkatz I *think* the OP is talking about where the dealer has a bust card up - not the player.
Never play blackjack boom your a winner
I'm a dealer and people get upset when another player asks what they're supposed to do and I tell them they should hit a 12 against a 3 or hit a soft 18 against a 10. Those are definitely the two most common ones experienced players have very strong and wrong opinions about.
Split 8s against 10 too. Hitting or doubling on a soft 18 will make people rage at you for sure.
@@DragonPupEclipse I Mean, you're supposed to split 8s everytime anyways
@@evrimenustun9548 can you explain the reason behind always splitting 8s? aren't you normally expecting the next card to be worth 10 so you then have 18 and 18 Vs the say the dealers 10 most likely will make 20 doubling your loss?
@@nickbates1571 chances of both of your split 8s losing against the dealer are less than losing with a single 16 which is simply the riskiest number to stand on.
@@DragonPupEclipse ive seen enough hands to know that you could make a hand in two hits for half the price and also win that way too.
I read one book like 20 years ago and I didn't learn anything new by halfway thru the vid so I stopped watching. So my issue isn't that your video is not good, my issue is that it is titled for your subscribers (apprentices maybe). Not for viewers browsing by title. The title implies a much broader viewing audience than the content actually meant for. Yeah I said it! I know it's nitpicking and I have no issue with the quality of you content... but it just bugs me. Sorry...
Donna white beat the casino 7 million by him self in 1 night.
It believe it was 1.7 million. Solid days work tho
Who doubles a 12? 🤣
It works😅
I'm getting sick of seeing all these Harris commercials before the videos I know that
depending on my bet or what the dealer is showing. insurance is only offered with an ace up wtf is this guy talking about????
The best way is not to play 😅
I had two 8s against dealer 8. The dealer told me not to split. He asked the pit boss what the book said and the pit boss said to split. Thought that was kind of odd.
I thought I played pretty much perfect basic strategy just to realize I’ve been playing soft 18 wrong in many circumstances! Thanks for the great video as always
The problem with basic strategy is that is what the casino wants you to play. Most casinos sell basic strategy cards in their gift shop
I agree @@dalebrooks304
@@dalebrooks304what do you mean by basic strategy cards bro 😂 a deck of cards is a deck of cards
Took the advice, doubled my a-7, everyone at the table was mad, dealer acted like I was splitting face cards, then I lost the hand and they all laughed…😂
16 is the mother in law hand. You want to hit it, but you cant
Most of the times I get a 12, if I hit , there comes a 10 😂
I play online live blackjack, and all the times I stood when I got over 11, the next person would get a 10, it happened about 5 times, and when I decided to hit on a 12, I busted 😅
Is there an advantage to tipping a dealer? Will they help you later? Like maybe “miscount” and “accidentally” pay you after you lose? Other than feeling generous after a win, do we tip just to be nice to a low-income employee?
Not sure where you get that these people are "low-income employees"

Basic strategy charts aren't that hard.
Very good information with my over four decades worth of experience working for the house many of these people really need to know how to properly play the game of blackjack the right way...aka high low.
Who the hell ever doubles on a 12?
What I love about blackjack is you can be above/about average with the basics and it's not a stretch to be good with experience... and that's without any kind of card counting.
I like to play Blackjack since it has one of the lowest house advantages if played right. Knowing the odds on a hand and being disciplined about how you should play that hand is key to keeping that house advantage to a minimum. Easier said than done. I got several good tips from this video! As far as card counting, it seems most casinos today have strategies to counter that with such things as using machines that constantly re-shuffle the decks for instance.
Craps has the best odds fold closely by Baccarat
At pretty much every table I've ever played at, I'm the only person that hits a 12 against a 2 or 3. It's a little maddening. :)
A8 vs a 6 you double? A7 vs 2 - 6 you double? When do you surrender 15 against a 10? 16 against 9 - A When the decks is almost done?
i never double my 11 hands vs the dealer 10 or ACE if the count is negative.. and it seems to work well for me...
Every chart I've ever looked at says you should stand with a soft 18 vs 2. Why double?
Hi, probably because you already have a0n expected advantage with an 8 vs a 2, and 8 of the 13 cards will improve your number or keep it the same.
16 vs 10 is about half half to hit or stand. If true count is positive stay if negative hit
Scared money don't make money
I might not remember this correctly, but the average hand to win is something like 18.5.
I've never seen anyone double down on a 12. 😂
Wrong attitude: your in a bad situation; better to hit and possibly make a hand vs standing and almost assuredly losing.
If you have a plus 3 or better, that when you want to take insurance.
Would it make sense to play two hands at a time when possible? Wouldn't that help your EV as its more rounds per hour?
Why does the dealer leave one card down and one up
I would insure a blackjack. Gotta get the guarantee win.
