  • Lovely gift from a wonderful friend. I’ve tried the Ohuhu stove with sticks, homemade methyl hydrate stoves, wood pellets and finally in this experiment charcoal. #novascotia #canada #ohuhu #outdoors #bushcraft

I couldn't get water to boil when I tried this with my Lixada wood gas stove. One good thing about it though, the smoke gets rid of the black flies. Thanks for sharing Steve

The water got hot enough for a cup of tea but never had a chance to boil your right. Now that you mention it, I can imagine exactly how you could use this stove as a bug smoker too haha thank you for the suggestion Mark. Big part of what I like about these little stoves is how versatile they are. Thank you for watching and commenting Mark!

I wouldn’t have bought this stove. I far prefer to make whatever I can but to receive this as a gift from a friend was awesome and I really do enjoy using it. It’s really functional. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Any natural oils Will get it going quicker you must have a lot of fat wood birchbark in that area, also Cheap hand sanitiser with 70% alcohol is often my choice because it serves two purposes

@@badgerandthewoodsman I looked it up after receiving it and it can be found on Amazon for around 27$ Canadian which makes it a really good value for the quality of it for sure.

Fat wood is scarce in my area, I’ve been looking for a few months now with no luck. Birch is very common here though. I have used cheap hand sanitizer in the past but have moved towards methyl hydrate to get say wood pellets going in it and it works well.

Top down fire, started from the top using a waxed cotton pad and birch bark, using about 200gr wood cat litter pellets for fuel works great for me. Remember that the inner vent channel openings must be free of any fuel in order for the gasification process (burning of the gases coming from the fuel) to work. First the fuel and gas gets burned, all the while the fuel is being turned into charcoal, then lastly the charcoal itself burns. When working properly you don’t get any smoke, nor any soot or flames around the base of the stove. Worth a try! Greetings from a chanterelle forager in the Grampian hills back in old Scotia!

Right on, excellent tips there. For a cheap little stove and me using it completely wrong almost every time I gotta say I am super impressed with it for my first experience with a stove like this. Thanks for sharing your tips, watching and commenting. I really appreciate it! The chanterelles this year have been abundant to say the very least.

Bit different, I would suggest either rely on the fire starter or put some olive oil on paper and use that.

I don't see much sense in bringing wood pellets or charcoal with you in the backpack because the key advantage of a wood stove is finding a wood in the forest, right? If you should bring your fuel then why not to use gas or alcohol stove in the first place? After testing Ohuhu I came to conclusion that it needs very dry fuel otherwise it burns poorly because much of the energy which normally goes into gasifying wood, goes into turning water content into steam. So after many experiments I came to conclusion that a simple wood stove (in my case I prefer Vargo Hexagon Titanium) is much better choice for average circumstances.

I have to agree, I recently experienced exactly what you are saying with the Ohuhu stove where the wood I was using in it wasn’t bone dry and man I couldn’t get that thing to burn at all. Thank you for the input! Thank you for watching and commenting. I certainly do appreciate it!
