I've just finished my first segmented bowl. I now appreciate how much work goes into a project like this. I love the look of the walnut veneer between the maple segments. It reminds of tile with a dark grout. This is a beautiful shape, too. I greatly admire your artistry and craftsmanship. You have a wonderful gift for turning and video. Your channel is a wonderful source for us "mortals."
You just got yourself a new subscriber. I know absolutely nothing about woodwork, but it's really nice to watch talented people like you create such beautiful objects.
You have no idea how much I appreciate being able to see HOW these things are made. Gives me hope that 1 day I can create something at least in the same VEIN as what you make. dang man!!!
Nice job on both the bowl and the video. Nice to watch the process and not be distracted by music. Maybe I'm crazy, but I prefer to hear the tools working rather than some random music. For those of us who are visual learners, this video was really nicely done.
Thanks very much! I've learned from comments like yours regarding the music vs. tool sounds, and I appreciate it. I still use music on occasion, but usually more low key than I did in my early videos. Thanks again :)
I should have looked for your comment first before replying myself. This is exactly how I feel too. I really feel like I could one day DO something like this! (not as good! :) )
I liked how you showed in real time that you wait until the saw blade stops completely before you grab the cut pieces. Great video for learners and of course a beautiful piece of work in the end. Lovely...
Absolutely beautiful. I do segmented bowls but have never turned them as I was gluing them together, your way is much easier, thank you very much. Again, very beautiful
Very very Nice! My Favorit in your Video Is the Last picture in the end. Ther is shining a light from the Inside of the bowl. It Looks like an Alien Ship. I Love it! I Wish You Many woodworker Chips in the future and a lot of fun. Greatings from northern Germany.
I agree with the other comments, Rod. Your work is absolutely beautiful n you could make money from your work. I missed your Semper Fi. Lol. But your work speaks for you. Good luck, mate. Happy Easter. Have a safe one.
What an absolutely gorgeous bowl! Thank you for sharing with us the intricate work involved in putting it together. I appreciate that you left it very light colored, rather than staining it, and I second a comment I saw below about not having music. I'd rather listen to the tools too. :) Couple of questions -- how long did it take you to make this? And when you sell your work, are you able to charge an amount that values your time and skill appropriately? I hope so! You deserve it. :)
Thank you very much, I appreciate your thoughts. I haven't sold anything really. I donate many and gift others...but when I do start selling eventually, I'll factor some of that in for sure. 😊 Edit: I have sold a couple made on commission a while ago but I rarely do that anymore as it doesn't fit into my plans and schedule. Thanks again!
sometimes when working with segments that are shaped as wedges, it's better to stop them short of the point and make a uniform hole. When the "pie" pieces all come together there's almost always an uneven small hole there anyway. I could have used glue and dust, but I thought the dark dowel inserted would look nice. Thank you! Good question! 🙂
This is the first wood turned bowl I've seen that has the look of a clay pot. There's an actual neck. I'd like to see the neck flared a little more. Perhaps with a large lip. That would have created an interesting shadow on the shoulder. That maple has an almost pearlescent quality about it. Maybe put it on a buffing wheel with jeweler's rouge... $2,000 easy for this piece...
@@RHumphrey Yes...that bowl was pretty impressive...I very much like the idea of making it look like it was built of clay...at least that's my initial impression. Suggestion...would it be possible to make the lip of the rim out of a contrasting wood? Maybe 1/2" or less. Something real dark but still has a nice grain. That would require some real skill I would think. To make it look like a clay rope was put around the rim and fired. Keep up the good work...there's a lot of galleries here in Scottsdale that would flog your stuff for yuge money...
@@LeonAllanDavis Thanks again! I do like the contrasting wood idea, something I do quite a bit actually. I've not put any effort in to making myself or my work known locally here...nor have I tried to display anything in galleries, so your information is really interesting. My house looks like a gallery, lol.
Thanks very much! I understand completely, and had the same type of hesitations about trying it. I just practiced my cuts on scraps at first, learned the angles for common segment counts, and gave it a shot. I'd encourage you to go for it too, you'll discover that it looks more difficult than it actually is :)
Another beautiful piece. A piece of art. Just wondering why each layer needs shaping before the next layer is glues on? Is it for balance or maybe to centre the next layer?
For me it has much to do with easy access for the tools in my inventory, as well as stability of the piece as I add on layers. I've put off purchasing the hollowing tools though, because I enjoy this process. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Why do vacuum the dust while sanding and not during Turning? And yes, I have never turned but am slowly and methodically learning by watching your amazing skills.
My one comment should not be taken as criticism. Would a darker stain have produced a more dramatic effect on the wood grain? I don't know much about the wood type you used, so it might be a moot point. But I do like the final results.
I don't remember but I'd guess at about 20-30 hours, mostly glue drying time but that slows down the whole process. I multi-task as much as I can... Thanks very much!
Using any kind of rags around a spinning lathe is exceptionally dangerous. Paper towels are much safer. If they catch the tear. Rags remove fingers when they catch
yeah, I knew I'd catch it for using a buffing pad, but I used it as safely as possible. Using a lathe in general is dangerous, be deliberate in all actions. Thanks for commenting :) (I do agree)
Ron, I have to say, that is a beautiful bowl. What happened to that hole in the bottom ? I would have thought you might have used a solid bottom. J.O.M.O.
jim renderer - Interesting, i just watched this and had the very same question? The hole was for ? And it’s still there on the inside on the finished piece. Nice looking though.
Sure is beautiful. I wish I had this talent AND the nice workshop! And no distraction from unnecessary music! Thank you!
Thanks very much! 😊
Beautiful bowl. You always make beautiful bowls. I love them 😊 💗💗💗
Once again, those wood inlays give the piece an incredible brick appearance. Excellent work!
Thanks very much!

Thank you Paul, I appreciate that! I'm right there with you though brother, just another wood turner doing my thing! 😊
It always looks so easy when a master craftsman does it. You did the wood proud.
Thanks so much! 😊
Rod, what a very unique glow this has. Almost like mother of pearl inlay. Gorgeous!
Thank you! Figured maple is really pretty...I hadn't thought of it in those terms, but you're right!
Wow ! What a Beautiful looking bowl. I can't wait to see what comes next. Take care and have a great day
Different approach than I’ve seen before, but your right...very rewarding! Really nice work!

The shapes of your bowls are so artistic and pleasing to the (my) eye. Beautiful works of art by a master.
You're very kind, thank you!
I like how it looks like a spider's web from the top and subway tiles from the side. A very nice piece.
I like your descriptions, thank you!
You're welcome.
That's a beautifully made bowl! Thank you for sharing!
I ❤️❤️❤️❤️ the light color of the wood. Soooo pretty!! 👍👍. It almost looks like shell.
Thank you very much! Figured maple is truly beautiful 🙂
I really enjoyed the seeing you make this bowl.

My favourite so far, amazing
Thanks so much Richard!
Lovely work 🤘
Nice to see very sharp tools at work. Great job!
Thank you! I sharpen often :)
absolutely fantastic.
Thank you very much!
This glue up system is smart. You don’t get a surprise on the lathe finding out you are super out of round. This looks like marble.
Thank you :)
Beautiful piece my friend congratulations for your great work. Wonderful lesson sorry if I hear mistakes because I use google translate
Obrigado pelo comentário agradável! Sua tradução é boa!
Gorgeous, reminds me of "mother of pearl"
Thank you!
Just beautiful!
Thank you very much!
The form of this bowl and the colour as well as the design reminds me of the baskets of the American Indians. Semper Fi. Carpe diem.
Stunning!
Thank you!
You're truly skilled
Thanks very much!
Very impressive bowl Rod. You made it look so easy but I appreciate it isn't. Just subscribed. Best wishes from South Wales, UK

I just haven't set up a vacuum system. I'm glad you find my videos helpful 😊
I see you use many different jigs. Did you create them or follow a drawing?
Rod, what a beautiful bowl. Is Figured Maple indigenous in your area? I've never heard of it. It's a beautiful wood.
Inspirational.
Thank you very much!
You woodturned a very pretty bowl indeed. Where can we buy your pieces?
Thanks very much! I'm not selling at this time, but have plans in the works. Thanks for asking!
So beautiful, what kind of wood is this?
Thank you! This is figured, or curly, maple, with black walnut spacing.
My one comment should not be taken as criticism. Would a darker stain have produced a more dramatic effect on the wood grain? I don't know much about the wood type you used, so it might be a moot point. But I do like the final results.
Maybe...not sure. I like the way stain interacts with figured grain so I'll give that some thought.
But wouldn't a dark stain have reduced the dramatic contrast between the maple and walnut? I like it as is. :)
An amazing piece! Out of curiosity, do you remember how many hours of work was it? Thanks anyway, I am loving your channel!
I don't remember but I'd guess at about 20-30 hours, mostly glue drying time but that slows down the whole process. I multi-task as much as I can... Thanks very much!
How did you finish the hole in the bottom? I could not see clearly what you did there. Beautiful result!
I finished with a hardwood dowel. Sorry it wasn't clear. Thanks very much!
@@RHumphrey thought so. That makes the most sense.
hey R... this is very nice work! what brand of lathe are you using by the way? thanks beau
Hi Beau, it's a Jet 1442VS and an older model that I think is no longer produced
Gorgeous. Just out of curiosity, how much money would a bowl like this cost?
Thank you! in the hundreds, but I haven't given it a lot of thought...
Very nice.

phenomenal
