I would never waste money putting this type of head on anything bigger than an eight inch joiner but for a small machine like this, sure it makes sense. What saddens me is how hard it is to get planer knives sharpened properly by specialist's. Properly honed, HSS does give a better finish. The geometry of inverted carbide inserts makes them more of a scraper than a slicing knife. Scraper planers are not a new idea. Yes, they reduce tear out but they bruise the timber fibres and weaken the surface. Tenderising the surface. It reduces the refractive index if you are using a traditional oil finish.
I have the old 3 blade cutterhead that you're replacing, a second hand one wth all 4 bolts where the blades go, sheared off (snapped). How do i go about fixing it? Or is it better to replace the whole thing, or better yet, do what you have done. I cant afford the upgrade so tryn to find a solution to my dilemma. Great video, slow mo is brilliant.
Who makes the belt that you purchased for this specific Jointer? I was just given a 37-290 4” Deluxe model from my father. The previous owner of their home that they purchased left it behind. I just purchased the Shelix cutter head for it as I plan on doing a complete cleanup, refurbish, and build a custom stand for it to finish up.
Yo tengo cuchillas tradicionales y no las cambio por ninguna .Cuando no cortan las afilo las asiento y quedan como navajas .Y esas cuando no cortan para afilar el costo es más que nuevas .
What size gear puller did you use on this? I'm about to do the same with my 37-195 and I'm trying to figure out which gear puller I need for it. Thanks!
First, let me take a guess, this is not your first video. Second, I'll bet I'm not the only one who was left wondering what the cost was of replacing old straight blades with a helical blades. Is that a secret?
Yup, 37-220. Note that there are 4 different styles of heads for the 37-220, shelixheads sent me the specs on all 4 and it took some measuring but I got the right one.
I just picked up an old Rockwell Delta Homecraft 4" jointer and I have no idea what the model number is. I've looked everywhere. Looks like it's mounted on a custom made base. According to a local electric motor shop the motor is pre-1956. Besides the serial number there is a round plate that says Homecraft. Delta Manufacturing Milwaukee.
@@billkaroly It’s probably the 37-290 model. Unless all the plates have been taken off of it you should be able to do a search online for the PDF user guide and it will tell you where to look to find out which model it actually is.
I love the stop motion you added in. Absolutely killer editing
Thanks
Brilliant idea on how you reinstalled those bearings! I found this video at the perfect time, I'm restoring an old jointer right now. Thank you!

Awesome video! Thank you for the skillful and time-consuming editing. That comparison between the old and new jointer heads is really cool.
Thinking about upgrading my grandpa's delta Rockwell to a Shelix as well. Great slow motion footage!
By far the most satisfying video on a jointer I have watched so far!
Wow. Your video comparisons in slow motion are epic!
Well done! I came to learn/watch the task being done and was treated to some art.
AND I got what I came for.
I see more subscribers in your future!

Hey, nice video. Do you know the RPM that spin this rotor? Thanks
Motor spins at 1725 rpm, gear ratio is about 2.3 so 4000 rpm.
Hi, I'm planning on doing the same thing to my old Davis & Wells jointer.
Cool, good luck.

Very good video. Perfect assembly. What's that camera?
Wow, great video! Curious about your camera gear...what did you shoot the high frame rates with?
Thanks. The high speed video was shot with a Chronos 1.4 camera.
