Never has been, still isn't, and never will be any female singer to match the beautiful, multi-talented miracle she is. She's simply incomparable and inimitable.
when I try to turn "younger" people on to Barbra, this and the Forum version are my go to. Prime voice , clear as a bell, pitch perfect and so damn thoughtful. Also, after all these years I'm finally noticing part of her schtick is appearing "UNCOMFORTABLE" which makes the viewer FEEL for her.... a trick? Clever trick if it is.
I got into a UA-cam comment argument along these lines when someone claimed that Karen Carpenter was the greatest singer ever. Here you are making a similar claim about Barbra. I certainly agree that her voice and singing is spectacular. But I claim that there are many other singers that are equally good: Julie Andrews, Lady Gaga, Adel Karen Carpenter, just to name a few. Yes Barbra Streisand is an uncommonly wonderful singer. But the greatest ever? I don’t think so. In the past 6 decades there have been about a couple dozen wonderful singers who perform at this level. Just to clarify, I’m considering the skills of these singers when they were at the top. Not fair to compare the current Lady Gaga with the current and elderly Barbra Streisand and Julie Andrews.
Lady Gaga maybe have a good voice but definitely not in the same league. Barbra controls her voice like no other! Barbra is the best but there are are others in her league like Julie Andrews, Karen Carpenter, Adele, Celine, Judy, Shirley Jones ( You’ll never Walk Alone!), but Barbra is the queen!
@@engineeringoyster6243Lady Gaga is a good singer, but Barbra has feats vocally which very few could equal. For example, achieving full vocal cord-closure on super soft dynamics in a 16 seconds legato line, Lady Gaga ain't touching that type of feat.

Stunning - Streisand at her pitch note perfect best- what a range - her phrasing cannot be touched by any other female artist of her generation. She is simply THE best!
Above and beyond having the greatest stage voice of the century, she method acted every song, to perfection. Every moment so real, so unique. It’s what she has in common with Garland. They both acted the songs. Just higher level stuff.
How cool is this!? At the end of the song, and If in the key of G, she improvises Did(C), 'nt(B), We(G), Al(Eb), most(C~D), Make(B), It(G.......) perfectly in the cord structure. A great Jimmy Webb Tune! This old recording makes it hard to hear the orchestration behind her but it seems to be 1st class. She made that song hers like no other singer could. When she's gone there will be no one to hold that level of excellence to replace her.
She wasn’t a trained singer or musician, so my guess is that she has perfect pitch and instinctively knows how to improvise and always remain on pitch. Ella Fitzgerald had that gift too, and couldn’t read a note of music.
But many many do Andrew. (Not everybody else). Maybe some who just cant hear it. Their loss. She couldn't have made it to the great heights she did, if So many , millions, did and do. Years back a great article in the The Arts and Leisure section of the NY Times, was written by an important Music (Opera) critic about her exquisite gift and why her instrument is so special. I wish I had saved it. Maybe it was 15/18 years ago. This vocal alone is a testament to her artistry. Best, EN
Well that's they're loss if they can't see how special Barbara Striesand is. The younger generations ears are so jaded towards CRAP music, today, they don't have a damn clue how beautiful Barbara Streisand is and was.
Barbra is an Actress who sings the song with real emotion and connection. A big difference from other singers. The only other Actress who did the same...the Great Judy Garland.
Her phrasing is impeccable. She truly is as rare as they come. She came out as a singer at such a young age and was already such a master with her voice and how she conveys emotions. Queen!!
No one owns a note like Barbra, striking a high tone with such accuracy, and then bend a low one with such emotional thoughtfulness, like on the word, "some..". I was 4 years old when upon first hearing her voice, and no one at that time, and few since, have ever "acted" a song quite like her. How anyone that tiny can contain that much talent is beyond my comprehension.
She had all the effects in her arsenal: sweet, soft, turning of a phrase, bending the note, a real jazz artist at heart but with a killer Broadway belt, and she holds back. She builds, she never just comes out with it. That's not exciting. Shirley Bassey just belted all the damn time. Barbra chooses carefully to set the scene, looking out at her lover right there in front of her, picking the emotion from a reaction of something in her head, an acting scene for her, and then toying with the melody to her pleasure, and letting us having it at the end, building to the release, having it mean something. It's coming from a real place. The most amazing example is her studio track, not the movie soundtrack but her studio album take of LOST INSIDE OF YOU, whereby she literally wails this one phrase and without even a break with a breath goes to a soft siren. Until I myself began singing did I realize NOBODY ELSE could do it quite that way without sounding ridiculous. She's really a musical instrument.
