The songs that came from this man are little nuggets of songwriting brilliance ... in some cases, they paint pictures so vivid that they are transporting ... the guy's a treasure.
This man is a musical, lyrical genius! No, he's not some smooth crooner, he just WROTE the song and performs it here with the emotion it was meant to have. Jimmy Webb's brilliant songs boosted the careers of so many great singers. He is truly special.
So true...This song was covered by some of the best singers of the time. Jimmy Webb is truly a genius songwriter and musician. Richard Harris had a great interpretation.
It cut it msg off after " read more", but I have Richard Harris' version of MacArthur Park,on l.p... I'm old but just now tuning in,re- remembering ' Didn't t We,'.. straight from the heart...watched Glen Campbell/ Jimmy Webb performing Mac. Park( utube) wonderful!..
The guys a genius no doubt about it; he has the hugest heart and the gentlest soul of anyone I’ve ever known. Everything he does is a total work of art. 🎼 🎶
And guess what! He comes to Chicago every year for a few shows at a great intimate venue, the City Winery. Also love his stories of the great singers he wrote for. Love the guy and his songs. A true genius.
So much a part of my growing up. Love all his masterpieces. “I couldn't write a song without God. To write anything meaningful I have to be in tune with God.” Jim Webb
To me the voice, not being so polished makes it more real. The unrequited love that inspired much of Webb's amazing material (MacArthur Park for instance) must've been really painful and powerful. A truly double edged sword. Miracles flowed from the mans pen.
Jimmy Webb captured perfectly the emotion of the era better than anyone on the composing scene at the time. To truly understand Jimmy Webb compositions is to truly understand one's self. Jimmy Webb's compositions will ultimately stand the test of time. Indeed, they are timeless compositions I will cherish always.
I booked Jimmy Webb on a TV show I was in Toronto and I was lucky to have spent most of a day with him. He was an absolute delight. He is a genius as is so very clear in MacArthur Park, and I LOVE Richard Harris singing it. Be well Jimmy.
Aint' it the truth! By the time (2:50) when he takes off on the words, "This time we almost sang our song in tune . . . " I have goosebumps. Don't you?
Jim is truely a magical curator genious!!. You got to hear Johnny Mathis version. sing this "Didnt We. May God bless you Jim..You"re the soundtrack of our lives. Thank You!!
Magical songwriter. It's always worth hearing the composer's interpretation. I would guess there are many more good singers than there are good lyricists.
Those 6 days and 6 nights changed his life and it did ours just like when God created the earth.... thank you for the beauty, music and blessings Jimmy!!!!!!
“I would like to play a song from the second act of an unsuccessful 'un-produced' musical . . . ” On this day at UA-cam if you enter the words “Didn't We (almost make it this time)” first offering is Frank Sinatra's definitive recording (acknowledging the Don Costa arrangement” with 168 thousand views posted seven years ago). Just ahead of Barbra Streisand's beautiful version is the composer himself, still in his 20s, a live performance. His self-effacing introduction includes words of tribute to Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley as inspiration for this song. (I'm guessing he had their magnificent WHO CAN I TURN TO from Roar of the Greasepaint, 1965 in mind.) By the time (2:50) he takes off with more orchestral chords, on the words, "This time we almost sang our song in tune . . . " I have goosebumps. Don't you? Aren't we lucky to live in an era when a magical musical moment-in-time from several decades ago is here, at our fingertips to enjoy in the here and now. The novelty will never wear off! Thanks so very much for sharing this one, 1STYRON2
"By the time (2:50) he takes off with more orchestral chords, on the words, "This time we almost sang our song in tune . . . " I have goosebumps. Don't you?" YES I DO. Thank you Mark for this beautiful post! I echo every sentiment.
A great song from one of the greats...a California guy. I just watched Frank Sinatra sing this song and he said " 'This Time' by Jimmy Webb." Thanks Jimmy
Jimmy Webb is such a likeable massively talented musician. I like his interpretation of many of his pieces more that many of the famous stars that used them over the years.
WOW!, Inever knew who composed that song, nor have ever seen a video of Jimmy Webb singing anything (I am an Arthur Garfunkel fan jam boysonberry fan Thos is the BEST verson of that song, this man sings his "truth" in his own unique manner. This is his gift to mankind. If persons say derogatory comments about their perception of his singing voice then "the penny hasn't dropped" for them! Congratulations for publishing Jimmy Webb singing HIS songs. Now I will possible have to purchace at least one of his albums. He is a sensitive and "down to earth" man. His humility shines.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. I always heard covers of it and there were great ones: Richard Harris, Patti LaBelle and others. Jimmy sings it with his heart but he doesn’t do the song the justice it deserves.
Ran away from home when i was seventeen to be with you on the California Coast.............first line from Jimmy's song Adios......fell in love with this first time i heard it.........Webb = songwriting legend
Absolutely a stellar comment. I am you, you are me. I feel exactly the same. I just saw Jimmy in Chicago last Friday night. Once again I came away feeling that no one does his songs better than the composer himself. (altho Linda R. destroys me with Harsh Mistress) He is one of our great treasures but too many are not aware of that fact. May the Lord bless and keep him. Thanks for you comment.
YEAH!!! My Favorite cover of this Masterpiece is by the Incomperable RONNIE MILSAP (the "White Ray Charles"), whom I saw a few times in the 80's. God bless them both. 🙏
This song always makes me cry. It makes me think of a love where we tried it a few tines and loved each other but just couldn't make it. I now think how foolish and head strong I was.
Jimmy I'm do grateful for you for allowing Richard Harris to sing this you and he were super. I love "a tramp shining" and "MacArthur Park. My close friend found both of these on cd and sent then to me.
Personal link - he was born the day before me...NEXT love I want a man who will wear his heart in the Open...like this fabulous and wonderful composer - the soundtrack to the lives of so many baby boomers…. goodbye LJE - thank you for being Almost …..
I just met Jimmy for the first time and WOW, what a kind and gentle man. I had no idea, and feeling embarrassed, asked for an autograph and he signed a poster for me.... and he was still in his PJ's! Man what a great guy!!!! Jimmy Webb Right On
Sammy Cahn was a famous lyricist way before my time. But in his later years he would do the afternoon “talk show circuit” (Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas). I remember him say all the time that the best singers of songs were the songwriters because only they knew what the song was all about. Sammy couldn’t sing well but he sang the best.
thanks for the alert peter the loverly penny valentine introduced me to the music of the great jimmy webb back then and this song turned up on my first album thanks, cheers mate j vincent edwards ps its also up on you tube
Magic and forever..
Peace 2023 RIP Richard Harris

@@michaelstrickand3858 One of Linda Ronstadt's favorite writers and singers. She speaks so admiringly of him in her memoir.
Kind of like Bacharach..

He is amazing. Sounding a little like James Taylor. What a genius. I am just discovering he wrote tons of songs I love. 🎵
The guys a genius no doubt about it; he has the hugest heart and the gentlest soul of anyone I’ve ever known. Everything he does is a total work of art. 🎼 🎶
one of the greatest songwriters of our generation. I doubt there is a song he wrote that I didnt love.
Oh so so true, Sallie. A brilliant songwriter who wrote so many great hits for Glen Campbell. Simply superb.
And guess what! He comes to Chicago every year for a few shows at a great intimate venue, the City Winery. Also love his stories of the great singers he wrote for. Love the guy and his songs. A true genius.

Jim Webb
I love every song he has ever written. Musical genius.
Genius~I think of Jimmy Web and remember his song "Macarthur Park" with the brilliant Richard Harris singing it.
I’m seeing this brilliant genius at City Winery in Nashville in September later this year. His name should be a “household word.”
❤️💯💯❤️💯💯❤️
Some people are just blessed to give music...real music.
To me the voice, not being so polished makes it more real. The unrequited love that inspired much of Webb's amazing material (MacArthur Park for instance) must've been really painful and powerful. A truly double edged sword. Miracles flowed from the mans pen.

rubbish
Possibly the most beautiful love-gone-wrong song ever written.
Thank you Jimmy.
I booked Jimmy Webb on a TV show I was in Toronto and I was lucky to have spent most of a day with him. He was an absolute delight. He is a genius as is so very clear in MacArthur Park, and I LOVE Richard Harris singing it.
Be well Jimmy.
Richard Harris OWNS the performance to that song!
Roger Regor i agree :-):-)
Nothing like listening to the composer and his interpretation of his own music.
Aint' it the truth! By the time (2:50) when he takes off on the words, "This time we almost sang our song in tune . . . " I have goosebumps. Don't you?
One of his most uncomplicated Best. Recorded by everyone. Everyone can relate to those lyrics.
Jim is truely a magical curator genious!!. You got to hear Johnny Mathis version.
sing this "Didnt We. May God bless you Jim..You"re the soundtrack of our lives. Thank You!!
When Barbara Streisand will sing your song....you are one in a million!
There was a wonderful time when tunesmiths wrote music with lyrics you loved. He is a true Americam treasure.
Jimmy, you are a poet who puts poetry to music....Love you so much. BTW, didn't know you were so handsome!!
A musical genius! you know you've made it when Sinatra does one of your works of art!
Sinatra didn't do this justice.
@@shaunwakefield9793what are you on about
What a beautiful song. He was so talented! When Streisand sings it, exquiste! He probably never imagined her singing it.
Magical songwriter. It's always worth hearing the composer's interpretation. I would guess there are many more good singers than there are good lyricists.
Wow! He built the whole house!!!! And other artists decorated it beautifully......
To be this good at music and lyrics is rare indeed, typically there’s a musician and a lyricist collaboration,
I have loved him since i was a teen, he was such a cute and talented musician.
Foever in my heart Jimmy Webb. ☆♡☆
One of my favorite songs ever!
Those 6 days and 6 nights changed his life and it did ours just like when God created the earth.... thank you for the beauty, music and blessings Jimmy!!!!!!
