- Baltica for the Modal Electronics Cobalt8 serves up an extended concoction of analog entwined pads, retro leads, old school stabs and ethereal effects. 100 patches are included (65 in the video and 35 more).

(For the record as I get asked this a lot, there’s no external effects on the demo. There’s fades between sounds, a limiter in the DAW and some gain staging. Nothing that couldn’t be achieved by turning a mixer up. Hope that’s legit enough!)

When I first got my cobalt 8 I was so disappointed because does indeed sound digital. But, after about a week or two I started to love it. Now it's probably my favorite synth. It's turned me into a big fan of digital synths. It just sounds "magical." There's no other synth that sounds anything like it. And it really has alot of modulation options and a high quality build for the price. And the fatar keys are amazing
Hi there, yes it does have it's own "sound". Whilst it can do analog style sounds I think it goes far beyond that.

Really nice beautiful pads, stabs, sound effects and bass lines. Makes me wish I could design stuff like this myself. So much power and versatility in these v analog synths of course it's much more about the sound designer than anything else, like anything. Respect!!

Wonderful sounds! I love that synth: simple, yet powerful and straight to the point. Great instrument for people looking for electronic sounds.

It looks like with the new firmware they have addressed, at least partially, the only major limitation (in my humble opinion) which is lack of independent noise source.
To add noise, previously you had to sacrifice one of the sound engines to choose Filtered Noise algorithm. The new firmware introduces Noise AM with saw, square or triangle wave. We now have noise and the tone available together. Good news, and the FM algorithms are always welcome :-)
Yes that's true! Noise is usually a separate generator on many synths. It's a good solution. I still think it needs some adjustable drive into the filter. You can fudge it with effects but it would probably sound a bit different.
I purchased a Cobalt 8X about a month ago in part due to your demo. The Cobalt has an amazing sound quality! The filter is superb!!! ...and the oscillator algorithms give this synth unbelievably powerful and unique when it comes to a diverse sound palette. I look forward to loading your sounds into my Cobalt.

All excellent but particularly Lost Summer / Space Wing - very Tangerine Dream - love it. If I hadn't recently bought the outstanding Roland JDxi I would buy one of these
Ah thanks Phil:) Yeah they're probably my favourites too. JDXi is a fine machine too, different sound but highly capable.
Just ordered this synth. The trancey stuff reminds me of the old Nord Lead that came out in the mid 90s.
I produce dnb and jungle and my current budget doesn't allow me to buy a Virus. This Modal is shockingly similar to a virus indigo with respected limitations of course. But goddamn for the money you cannot touch it. Can't wait to get this. I scraped my entire studio set up and haven't touched music since April until a week ago. Had to hit the reset button. Decided I wanted one dedicated work horse synth for under a grand. Knew I would be getting digital and landed on the modal cobalt 8x. I think it'll end up being a good choice. I've had at least dozen synths go through my hands over the years and something tells me this will be a solid investment.
Hi, Yes there's probably some similarities. I think the Cobalt's strengths are in the oscillators. There's a lot of room for timbral shifts beyond a typical VA. Virus is a different beast entirely but there's always some overlap. I think it's a solid investment for the price. Hope it works out for you:)

Lovely sounds this thing sounds better than most VST instruments. Lost Summer very lovely build up and sound mixture could easily make that into a club banger. This synth really does sound like it has it all, deep bass frequencies and magical ethereal sound textures with crispy clean highs. Well done!!!

When I first got my cobalt 8x I was disappointed by the factory patches, which are a bit mediocre, and made me question the synths capabilities. But after installing this pack I realised what it could really do, and started putting more effort into designing sounds. Excellent set.
Hi Bevis, thanks very much. From the outset I tried to push the Cobalt in as many directions as I could in a short space of time. Perhaps that's why my banks aren't very genre specific... Good luck with sound designing, there's always more to discover!
This and the Argon8 soundsets are beautiful. There's a cosmic airiness and spaciousness about both synths I love. Perfect visuals too.

@@SolarReannex It really depends, most seem to prefer the Cobalt. Me I like the Argon too. Both are great machines. If analog sounds are your thing - Cobalt. More abstract stuff, probably Argon. Hope that helps!

This... is amazing. I don't know what to say. I just got my Cobalt 8M the other day, and just grabbed this bank. As of this comment, I've only used the first patch (which I suppose is appropriately the namesake of the bank) and ended up recording about two minutes of nothing but playing that one patch.

The bulk was Adobe After Effects plugins, but I did use Space Engine on this one. Pain in the butt to render the landscapes as took so so long and had many computer crashes - need a new one! ;)
Some of these patches are stunning! and the imagery your displaying fits so well it's hypnotic! Are these patches stacked or single layer patches?
The vast majority aren’t. There’s ones with a kick underneath or a different timbre that are. The synths output is just that though (with levelling & fades) hope that helps!

Very happy and no I haven't! - I've barely scratched the surface. I only programmed it for a few weeks. I try not to have "favourite" synths. They all offer a unique perspective on sound. Too many get swayed around by opinions online. If you like it and it offers the sounds/features you need, then it's good! Hope that helps.
@@Soundsauca On line reviews appear to be very favourable especially concerning build quality and the Fatar key bed. I was thinking of getting the Argon 8X as it's cheaper than the Cobalt 8x and then maybe have the Cobalt 8M sitting on top of the Argon!
Should make a good pairing. I asked Modal about using the Argon 8X as a midi controller and they said it would work very well as it would transmit all CC messages. Do you use yours as a controller? I do all my recording on Ipad Pro now just because there's limited space in my spare room and thought this would be good to control all my IOS apps?
Yes that would work great. It's a fine controller and yes I do use it as a master. I have the 37 keys but my playing skills leads a lot to be desired so it's fine for me! As long as the iOS apps receive midi CCs then you're all good. You'll have to map things but then it should work.
This is how you sell synths dude! But on the other hand giving me an headache (sweet one you know me mate) :D knowing the fact Modal will attend Thomann virtual online synth event at the end of this month - so my brain thinks there could be another synth in the line... damn it's hard to be libra lol Any how this sounds fantastic and i like this warm and calming sound :)

Hi there, it's G Minor I believe. (G, A sharp & D). I'm no pianist so I play what sounds good to me. I think a lot of the atmosphere there is the sound itself. Hope that helps!

Ah cool. Do you mean the JP-8000 or JD-800? Cobalt is very different to both of these. Cobalt's strength lies in the oscillators and what you can do with them. Roland have better filters IMO. As always there's crossover but I always like to play to an instrument's strengths - Cobalt can do some very beautiful things and has a very pure sound quality. As a complete synth Cobalt is an excellent package. Hope this helps!

NP - JP-8k is obviously a classic trance machine amongst its other capabilities. It’s a rougher sound. Cobalt is more refined, controlled & hi-fi. It also has new FM algos recently. I think they’ll compliment each other;)
It's hard to find Cobalt8 presets that aren't pads/ambient. Almost every preset bank is like this. This synth is capable of so much more, I don't understand why everyone has to make the same kind of ambient patches.
Well I made mine first as I had the Cobalt early on! It’s indeed capable of much more and my demo imho straddles many patch types & styles. The reason - if I look around all the synths I have available, Cobalt shines through for pads/ambient possibly more than some other timbral types. YMMV!
@@Soundsauca I finished listening through and you did include a few good non-ambient sounds. The last sound was almost a hoover.

What FX preset (or custom FX) did you use for the Inner Life patch?
Hi there, there's no external FX so it's all Cobalt. I can't remember the specific effect as a while ago, but they were all custom made.

Thank you Richard. Unfortunately not. From what I understand the Cobalt 5s looses an lfo and effect. I’d be totally up for translating them to a 5s, however I don’t have one and there hasn’t been much interest from big M these days. If I get hold of one I certainly will.

Lol! Well it’s probably possible to get close. If anything can do it, one of Modal’s synths could. Personally I never tried to recreate any sound on either synth. However I totally understand why you’d want to.

What’s your favorite between Cobalt and Argon?
Ahh - that's a tough one. Let's just say both have their uses. I am partial to wavetables now and again is as far as I'll go:) It does however really depend on your needs and types of music you want to create though. Cobalt all the way for analog type sounds, but as usual in life, there's no single definitive answer. Sorry if that's a little vague!

At first i was really interested by the Argon, and then I found the demo and the architecture of the Cobalt old fashion (VA like Roland’s 90s releases?) then i find more and more attractivity for the Cobalt and lost a bit of interest for the Argon. Anyway so many gear so little time, we’ll see if one crosses my road at a second-hand market place one day 😉

Ah… it’s a tough one! Ask yourself the question-are you after analog style sounds or more futuristic/esoteric sounds. There is overlap here so to get one doesn’t mean you can’t do the other,but that’s probably as simple as I can put it! Of course - there’s always Modwave/Hydrasynth!!!
