Dawning of the Day: Bagpipes

- This #slowAirSunday is the beautiful Irish tune called "Dawning of the Day". "On Raglan Road" is a well-known Irish song from a poem written by Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh named after Raglan Road in Ballsbridge, Dublin. "Fáine Geal an Lae" literally translates as 'the bright ring of day', referring to dawn. The air, one of a supposed seven or eight hundred, was reputed to have been composed by Thomas O'Connellan, a 17th century harper from County Sligo who spent considerable time in Scotland. The poem was put to music when the poet met Luke Kelly of the well-known Irish band The Dubliners in a pub in Dublin called The Bailey. It was set to the music of the traditional song "The Dawning of the Day" (Fáinne Geal an Lae). An Irish-language song with this name (Fáinne Geal an Lae) was published by Edward Walsh (1805-1850) in 1847 in Irish Popular Songs, and later translated into English as The Dawning of the Day, published by Patrick Weston Joyce in 1873. Given the similarity in themes and the use of the phrase "dawning of the day" in both On Raglan Road and the traditional tune, it is quite likely that Kavanagh from the beginning imagined the pairing of verse and tune.
Lyrics:
One morning early I went out
On the shore of Lough Leinn
The leafy trees of summertime,
And the warm rays of the sun,
As I wandered through the townlands,
And the luscious grassy plains,
Who should I meet but a beautiful maid,
At the dawning of the day.
No cap or cloak this maiden wore
Her neck and feet were bare
Down to the grass in ringlets fell
Her glossy golden hair
A milking pail was in her hand
She was lovely, young and gay
Her beauty excelled even Helen of Troy
At the dawning of the day.
On a mossy bank I sat me down
With the maiden by my side
With gentle words I courted her
And asked her to be my bride
She turned and said, "Please go away,"
Then went on down the way
And the morning light was shining bright
At the dawning of the day.

On Raglan road ,on an Autumn day, I saw her first, and knew, that her dark hair would weave a snare, that I might one day rue. I saw the danger ,yet I walked along the enchanted way, and said, let grief be a falling leaf, at the dawning of the day.
Northern Europeans, in their pagan heyday, were still the new kids on the block.
Even of you have no Celtic Ancestry the Bagpipes stir something inside us all. They are my tied for my Favorite Instrument along with Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer.
How come my chanta doesn't sound like this Beautiful. ❤ ❤ ❤
This was our Regimental Réveillé for the Pipes, sounded directly after the Duty Bugler had sounded Réveillé.
Normally it was just the two Soldiers on duty but on certain special dates you would have had the entire Band, Bugles, Pipes and Drums playing it for Réveillé !
Really fond memories and you have really done it justice (like always !).
Always adored this piece of music, particularly Luke Kelly singing it as
´On Raglan Road’.

I just downloaded the sheet music… you have such a clean approach to the embellishments - inspiring! Question - I’m thinking of using this tune in my wedding set (processional) or funeral set (walk away)… two very different approaches… thoughts/comments?
