    Just to add a little context to the kosher thing, for the most part all non flavored whiskies are presumed to be kosher (certain wine cask finished whiskies may be problematic). However, there is an issue with the buffalo trace distillery. According to orthodox Jewish belief, one cannot own any grain based foods during the holiday of Passover. Any grain based products owned by a Jew during the holiday becomes non kosher. The vast majority of Orthodox Jewish Rabbis believe this rule extends to whiskies as well. You can get around this issue by selling your grain based products to a non Jew before the holiday and then buying them back once Passover ends (so long as you follow certain guidelines).
    Buffalo Trace is owned by Sazerac which is primarily owned by a Jewish man, and for many years they did not sell their products before Passover so it fell into this non-kosher category of grain based products owned by a Jew over the holiday. As you may have read on the back of the bottle, these bottles came from barrels that were sold to a non Jewish executive before the holiday, so any issues with the buffalo trace distillery would not apply.

      Which orrifice did you pull that out of? There is SO MUCH more to being kosher than just being grain based. For one, the level of expected cleanliness...two, the process has to be overseen and approved by the rabbinical council...this is one of the most ignorant posts I’ve read in a while. Should have used your lifeline to phone a Jew.

      You gotta chill out in these comments Reaghansdad. I'm genuinely asking. Is Kosher a money thing or is there an actual purpose/reason for it?

    • @Kiddush_Club
      @Kiddush_Club 4 роки тому +3

      Kosher just means it's fit for consumption per Jewish law. Certified Kosher means a Jewish agency (e.g. a rabbinical council) has supervised the production process and certified that it meets all kosher requirements. Most whiskies are inherently kosher and can be assumed so even without certification. Wine cask finished and flavored whiskies may pose problems, so those may require certification before one can assume they're kosher, but any standard whiskey can generally be assumed kosher without any certification. As mentioned in my initial post though, there is an additional issue with Jewish owned distilleries due to Passover requirements. Since Buffalo Trace is Jewish owned, they're products are problematic based on Orthodox interpretation of Jewish law. By obtaining certification for these bottles, we can be assured even these Buffalo Trace products meet all kosher requirements. If you'd like to do a deeper dive on the subject, google "chametz sheavar alav hapesach"

      Bourbon Junkies the Laws of Kashrut (being Kosher) start in the Torah/Bible and are expanded on after that. They do deal with cleanliness of preparation and being humane in the context of food, such as “do not boil a calf in its mother’s milk,” often simplified into, “don’t eat milk and meat together.” These are rules that many within Judaism, not just the orthodox, follow to different extents. Many Whiskies are considered Kosher without certification on them because the product has been known to only contain ingredients that are Kosher and the production doesn’t involve anyone Jewish (who would make a product unKosher by working on the sabbath). There’s a long list of Scotch, that isn’t colored, and considered by most or all to be Kosher. This type of list exists for Bourbon as well. Generally speaking, the money part comes in when the certification must take place. Most kosher foods must be certified and there are organizations like the CRC and OU that certify products as kosher. These are organizations that employ people who are on site or visit as inspectors to oversee a part or all of the process and make sure its on track so that they don’t sell a product to someone that would make them inadvertently violate these dietary laws. Calling this kosher and certifying the bottles and process actually opens these 3 Buffalo Trace bottlings to a group of people who would not normally be able to drink anything distilled or bottled by BT.

      As far as I know, Kosher is just a method of preparing food. Typically, when I hear the word Kosher, I understand it to mean that they drained an animal's blood before they started cutting it up and processing it. I know there's probably more to it than that too, but I wouldn't know. It's never been something that I've personally had to worry about, since I'm not of the Jewish faith. I do typically assume that anything marked Kosher is going to be of higher quality, just because it seems like they take more effort to prepare meat safely. That being said, I'm not sure how a Kosher certification would relate to grain or alcohol. I just always thought it was about meat preparation.

    Kosher just means its vlessed it doesnt change the process or anything like that. My father worked in a bottling plant where a rabbi would come and bless the ingredients and line.

    • @mobro444
      @mobro444 4 роки тому +3

      This is a common misconception. There is no "blessing by a Rabbi". Generally Kosher means that it was done with only kosher ingredients i.e no pork or shellfish and correct kosher practices. To ensure this is being done a Rabbi oversees the process but he does not hand down "kosherness" by blessing.
      However, as mentioned in the comments in the mash and drum's review last week all straight bourbon is automatically Kosher. The problem with Buffalo Trace (and Barton) is that they are owned by Sazerac Company which is majority owned by a Jew. Ironically, this creates an issue, as Jews may not own grain products, including whisky, over Passover. What religious Jews do is sell their whisky to a non-Jew for the holiday and buy it back after Passover. This process is overseen by a Rabbi as the Talmudic law surrounding it is complex. Unfortunately, Buffalo Trace was, of course, not engaging in this practice, which meant all their product was in this category of owned by a Jew over Passover and thus not Kosher. What the CRC did was oversaw the sale of a warehouse every year for the last seven years to a non-Jew over Passover and made certain that these bottles were filled only from barrels that were in that warehouse. As far as the ingredients and the process in the making of the actual bourbon it is exactly the same as standard Buffalo Trace and Weller. Religious Jews drink all other bourbon brands without certification but many, including myself, have not been able to drink Buffalo Trace for many years. Cheers guys for the review

      I would venture to guess that liquor stores in areas with large Jewish communities might be receiving greater allotments. I’ve seen this on the shelf one time and it was at a large wine store in the proximity of several predominantly Jewish neighborhoods. Also, I’m guessing that kosher markets that sell liquor may carry it. It’s kind of complex, but I believe that most whiskey is kosher, however, BT product isn’t kosher during certain periods of the year unless that product goes through a slightly different process that is certified by a Rabbi or kosher-certifying entity. The actual whiskey itself isn’t prepared in any different or unique way, it’s the ownership/distribution of the product during a certain time of the year that must follow a specific requirement in order to be certified. If my guess is correct, then truly hope that a bunch of whiskey hunters don’t start flocking kosher markets and buying/hoarding these bottles. But if you must, then I think it’s reasonable to make a few guesses about where you can find some.

    "Fit" for proper consumption food are those not violative of rules set forth in Torah (Leviticus and Deuteronomy) and the Talmud, according to Jews. The Rabbinical council cited would be a group of Rabbis giving it's specific approval for observant Jews consumption of products that are not disqualified by those rules. In this case that would include general purity as well as specific growing and harvesting times (generally that such wouldn't be in violation of Sabbath)'and tithing upon the crop.
    Reading the Wikipedia entry for "Kashrut" can explain this in more detail, if you're serious.
    Orthodox Christianity holds these laws fulfilled by Jesus and specifically addressed by God in Peter's vision of Acts 10--though significant minority positions exist such as some "Messianic Christian" groups and also notably the Seventh Day Adventists.
