I absolutely love this rendition of the song and I thank Mr. Huggett for posting it! Tony Rice and Peter Rowan are amazing, of course, but Bryn Davies on the bass and Sharon Gilchrist on the mandolin should also have their names in the video title or at least in the description. It wouldn't be the same without them.
Bryn Davies is a fantastic bassist, and I'm from the land of NHØP..Love the way she moves the bass around, to back whomever is soloing.. In fact, what a stellar lineup..
I was at the Canal Street Tavern in Dayton, Ohio the evening Tony Rice's tour manager said he couldn't sing anymore. He tried that evening but within seconds of trying to sing he realized his voice was too hoarse and he did what he knew best was play his guitar. Lot of tears in the crowd who came to hear him sing.
I first heard this song listening to the Grateful Dead. This is quite possibly the best version I've ever heard. His voice is almost ghostlike. Simply fantastic!
Shame Sharon got no love for that understated but full of feeling solo right out of the gate that was just pure music and masterful picking bringing the song alive within an otherworldly dreamy pocket . Stunning version, wow.
A close friend of mine worked several of those fests. I can only imagine. Tony and Peter are stellar but don't forget Sharon Gilchrist on the Mando. That bass player tooo... they all rock
Classical Murder Ballad, A Mans Torment from his Cheating Wife. The Angel sings & dances with her Bass as she plays it Perfectly. This song must be 100 years old or more.
This is definitely the best version of this song ever. I'm not being biased because Tony is my cousin, it really is the best I've heard. Peter's voice makes it hypnotizing and brings a fresh breath to the song. The visual artistry provides even more life to it. I can listen to it over and over.
This is the standardized speed of the song, the double-time that the Dead popularized was faster paced and fit their structure better, since then, a lot of people have followed the double time suit thinking it's normal, But the slow, melancholy mood of the song is how it should song. It's truly beautiful. Both versions are :)
when you say arraignment, do you really mean arrangement? Arraignment is when they bring in a suspect to be formally charged before a judge. How do you plead?
This performance is a hypnotic experience. I love it. Plus there's the visual bonus track of the sexiest upright bass player in the world groovin and chirpin in with some fine fine superfine backup vocals. .
The weekend this took place the field was a huge pond from the big rain and forced all the bands inside this little music hall. I was in the front row for this, and in the last row for the next act :)
We have to give whomever was running the soundboard a bit of credit, too. Wonderful mix; sounds like a tiny bit of reverb and phase shifting on the vocal, mandolin, & mandola. Quite pleasing.
Check out how Tony is watching Bryn closely. Then when he plays his lead I swear he's doing much (if not exactly) what she played. Whew! We'll miss you Tony!
KILL ME!!! That bass solo just done me in. what a beautif young woman Bryn Davies is. I would be so proud if she were my daughter. That goes for Mss Gilchrist also. What a fantasticly done Video.
Tony Rice, man what a special touch he has on the fretboard, what mastership! Sharon Gilchrest has the smoothest rub in the business on that mandolin and Peter's voice is so great! MAN I love this performance and group!
I was there on that flooded out weekend. I still enjoyed all the music, even though it was condensed into that little hall. Sweet stuff. Thanks a bushel for posting
Stunning. And thrilled that this is soooo long, I can sink into it like a hot spring pool. (Odd simile, since title Cold Rain and Snow.) Can't add anything to these comments, they say it all; agree with most (well, not remark about "the guitar guy" but we are all still learning, discovering, so he's forgiven,) I, for eg., hadn't heard this song before that I can recall.

A wonderful time was had by all on Saturday May 14, 2011. The Tony Rice Unit at the Unitarian Center in Hamden, CT. Tony and Wyatt, Rickie Simpkins, Rob Ickes and Bryn Davies. Great show. Great venue. Great folks. Less Than Face Productions was present for the event.
Used to hear Peter Rowan in Earth Opera that played in Cambridge Common--for free--on many Boston weekends in the 60s.. Different sound, always memorable!
rowan was in the early proto-new-grass band muleskinner with clarence white (and david grisman) now here with tony rice playing clarence's D-18 martin... sweet..
Had heard a studio of this years ago, but this is way better. I had a bit if a beef at first about hiring hotties, too rock n roll i thought, but they are no mere eye candy. And easily could have gotten the gigs wearing masks and brown bags. so.... They are a great quartet, I would be proud to play with any of them and this song is going on my duets forthcoming ep { OK Traditionals } along with some cool trads i nicked from jack white, ;-).... Rowan and Rice keep getting better and better.

Tony Rice, a living legend. Gone but not forgotten.
Such finesse and subtlety in his playing. I think Molly Tuttle channels him now and again.
Saddest Christmas ever 😪

Classical Murder Ballad, A Mans Torment from his Cheating Wife.

Love the relaxed beat and Peter's voice is so hauntingly beautiful. Chills.

Good Lord that bassist made me feel all kinds of ways 😮👏
He's got the perfect voice and delivery for this song, and his mandolin intro is just astonishing.
This is the one for the time capsule.
Everything that's ever been said about Tony Rice is true. An absolute guitar God.
He just had a birthday on June 8th
Rest in Peace, Tony Rice. :(
when? was not aware
I hadn't heard he passed...sad news! R.i.p. Tony!
@@dufus2273 Dec 25th 2020 I just read. While making coffee according to Ricky Skaggs.

Tony Rice is in another galaxy.
He nailed the intro to this song, it is why I stayed and chilled, peace!
This is it - the definitive version.
Indeed.
Such a beautifuly haunting arraignment. And the ladies kill it on all levels.
when you say arraignment, do you really mean arrangement? Arraignment is when they bring in a suspect to be formally charged before a judge. How do you plead?

Thanks 👍 Perfect 😊
I loved this quartet. I saw them at Suwannee twice. Their album "Quartet" is great.
I saw em up here in NJ. It was super great but typical Jersey crowd booed when they only did one enchir
I love this bass player! She plays with feeling on every song she does!
Notice they had her stand wherever the camera was pointing

I noticed exact same thing... you can tell Tony likes playing with her, they were locked in.
Bryn dances that bass across the stage, to back him up.
I've seen her do that time and time again, what a fantastic musician she is!

This bass player is one cool character. Didn't miss a beat at 3:40 whilst movin' over. I love the soothing chorus and the reggae feel.
Saw this band at the Sanders Theater in Cambridge when they were touring...Yum!
