- I´d like to share with you this previously unseen footage of our musical hero and fine gentleman, Mr.Tony Rice, with the consent of Mr.Chris Walz. The entire video here:

Is it weird to feel emotional about someone you never met.
This guy is on an other level.
You're not alone. I get emotional watching Tony in his later years as well!
I had that same feeling. What comes through is his warmth as a human being, whether he's playing or speaking.
I think we know him in the ways that we can. And listening is knowing.
That was me who requested fishscale. I just about cried when I found this online. One of the greatest days of my life, right up there with when I graduated from Parris Island. And maybe more so.

last year i stopped into a yardsale that was goin on to my suprise the guy had a santa cruz leaning up against a table,i played it for awhile he said that guitar was meant for me,200 bucks i could take it home ,i said brother you shouldnt have this instrument out in the weather its a hand crafted instrument worth at least 15 times more than he was asking,it took 30 minutes to convince him to take it in the house and reconsider selling it,get sick to my stomach when i think about ,smoothest guitar i ever touched made me sound like a mistro....man was lucky im a God fearing man
Man, that's brilliant. There are more nice guitars than chances to do deeds like this. And cheers for getting it out of the sun, just reading about it sitting out there was like fingernails on a blackboard. Yikes.
As much as as I would love finding a deal like that I would’ve done exactly like you did I would’ve sat down and said look man you have a very valuable instrument here and I would help him look it up online just to give him an example of what it was worth great job brother

Tony says "something simple", tunes by ear and then casually rips it up. I sure do love his music.
Put my son to bed a few hours ago. Its midnight and I’m gettin in some last minute practice. was picking through John Henry and working “Around the Horn” licks and came across this. God i wish i had the chance to meet Tony, but in a way i feel like he’s with us pickers and listeners. Thanks Tony for your words of wisdom. Hope we can have a jam in heaven sometime in the not so near future if all goes well, HA!

I think what The Master Tony is trying to say,is be ourselves. I've played for 50 years, and never heard anyone like Tony Rice. Years ago,I modeled myself, and my style, as many have done, as Tony Rice. God Bless him...but like he said, he beat us to it. He wants us to do it our way,as he done it his way.

He was so so deep musically spiritually creatively... I can't really fathom his absence yet.

I’ve been a fan of Tony’s for forty years plus. What he has done with and for the acoustic guitar can’t be measured in this life. I regard him as one of the finest guitarists ever. His memory and music lives on.
Some ppl knew it & many did not. Tony Rice was truly a man of the ppl with very much love in his heart. This video shows that in spades with his down to Earth nature & eagerness to help ppl accel at being themselves. He knew this was key advice to happiness in life as well as how it relates to being a good musician. Farewell for now Tony. We'll see you again on the other side when it's our time to be called up!!!!!!!

What he says at 6:59 about clones is still 100% true. High end proficiency with zero individual creativity ~ no personal spirit. It's the same in all music genres. People seem to fall for it more and more. He says it so perfectly. No negativity. Just try to play from your own heart & soul. Not to match or better someone else's work. I think that may be why there is so little timeless music being made these days. It's technical wizardry, but it sounds empty & mechanical. Nicely edited footage. Brought it all together very nicely. Thank you.

Tony was always real. Every time I talked to him, he was always straight up about pickers and his love of music. Progress as much as you can. I wish I had made it to where he wanted me to get to.
I play guitar myself and have gotta say that, that was the strangest tuning of a guitar I ever seen...
One class guitar picker...the best I've heard...a big big loss to the world of music.......

I miss a man I never even met. That speaks more than anything else to the powerful bong music creates between people, and I think that’s something that’ll outlast both Tony and me. Even though it breaks my heart that he’s gone, we always have that to hold on to, and I’m ok with that.

I saw Tony years ago at Merle Fest or some bluegrass festival can't remember. Man he was the GOAT.
What he said at the end was very inspiring. It was all inspiring. I wish more people were like Tony.
There was only one Tony...he will always be missed, he was a musical genius and just a super guy, I was fortunate enough to meet and talk to him after a show he did with Norman...He was just a very real and personable guy, will never forget it

Hey Randy, I love your videos. I lived near Tony and enjoyed a friendship with him for over twenty years. This was great. I've just gotten to where I can enjoy listening to him again without the dark cloud appearing to ruin it. He was a genuine good guy.
Ive always admired and loved listening to him play. As happens with all of us, father time caught up with him and his skills diminished some til he was no longer able to play and sing as he had when he was in his prime. I can say this with all the confidence in the world, he's playing and singing in heaven like he's never played and sang before. One day I'll get to see him in person. Thank you Lord for Tony Rice

Light on guitar ! Less impactful on pop, rock, country and jazz. Less bluesy, less soulful, less interesting.

Funny cause that last bit of advice about not becoming a parody act is so true? A guitar player I follow has taken this to heart in a big way and each time he plays, tries to play with honesty and genuine feeling and the difference from when he was just following the crowd is like night and day. You can have all the talent in the world but if it’s not genuine, you’d be amazed how folks BS detectors will go off lol.
Exactly right. Roy Buchanan was the same, no compromise, play from the heart.

I think he's being overly humble, everything he plays sounds good.
I think it’s that’s a product of how good he truly was. He had the most solid rock base to play off of anyone whose ever held an instrument, yet the selflessness to know that we’re always better with other like minded folks to feed off of.

Saw Tony the 1st time that I knew who I was seeing because I been taken to bluegrass festival since birth but I went to see the Tony Rice Unit at the Down Home in Johnson City Tenn when I was 13yrs old. Jason, Amy and Charlie Burleson took me and little did I know that 35yrs later he would be my lifetime favorite musician. I have listened exclusively to Tony with a sprinkling of other bluegrass music my entire life. I can't tell you who is popular right now in country or any other form of music. I'm thankful William Apostle is playing now.
Him and Tony's body of work will hopefully get me through the next 35yrs.

Just came across this in 2024. So true what he says about copying someone else, and I enjoy listening to some of those pickers, but like he said, when you create something original that I want to keep listening to again and again it puts it at another level. I'm not a picker, just a sometimes plunker but I have a TR model Santa Cruz that will have a happy home as long as I'm alive! RIP to one of the best!

The only problem is when you can't find anyone that likes to play the same music as you.
Wise man.I can’t say how much this I agree.I learned this about 20 years ago the hard way when I studied in music college.I had to do an end of semester recital with a couple jazz tunes.It was my first year so I took my friend to play drums.the problem was he’s a rock drummer.so the teachers examining the recital stopped the playing after like a few bars and told him that ain’t swing.afterwards when I was left alone with them or maybe just with my private guitar teacher (that was in the room as well) I was told to always choose to play with musicians that are good or better than you, not necessarily with your best friends.pretty much the same message Tony said here.since then I realy see how that helped me progress unlike others that just keep playing with friends and stay on the same level.

your at least as good as the musians you surround yourself with.

Bela caused Jerry to f up and restart when told him to "Play it like Joni Mitchel". If this rings a bell, let me know. As the sun came up the morning I first heard it some 20+ yrs ago,
it helped me decide, at that moment, weather to 'get busy living', or... None the less, It has a significance to me. And if anyone can tell me what concert it came from let me know.
I'd love to buy a copy of their entire set that night. Jesus Saves, but so does music...!

It amazes me that tony always played the same guitar, one that previously belonged to clarence white. Despite intensive use live, recording and in teaching.
Electric players would have fifteen different guitars.
That's not a pick Tony is holding...it's a paint brush. His touch and expression are unsurpassed.

That roght hand picking thing he does plucking with the pick coming back up. That's his trade mark to me. Of course the melody is as much of his lead . He really gets going.

His greatest gift is his love of music which shines through in the warmth of his playing. He's very much like Chet Atkins in that respect.
