Brilliant, thank you, so helpful. I’m taking cuttings having been given a lovely dahlia last year. It’s my first time so all this info is invaluable. I love it that you can take cuttings and then more shoots start later which can also use. So looking forward to it. I’d left it in the garden, here in Cornwall, over the winter with several frosts and some snow and really thought it had died but just a week or so ago it started new shoots. Thanks so much! 🍾❤️
The small covered propagator that I use on a windowsill is an 8watt heated tray from Sankey, but other makes are readily available. Hope that helps! Martin
Hi, young dahlias grown from cuttings will form tubers by the end of the summer and if you wish you can take more cuttings from them next spring - thanks for watching!
@@PotsTrowels thank you so much for answering. I set some off from seeds and they have not done anything so brought some tubors instead. BTW I've justfound out your on my local bbc station so will probably listen out for you
Why butcher a tuber to take the cutting so low, then cut the part you worked so hard for off after. You could have just taken them above the soil and got the same and had further growth to come from the part that was left. A bit strange.
It doesn’t harm the tuber at all and basal cuttings taken from close to the tuber usually root better. The plant will still grow perfectly well and you’ll have an extra few plants.
@Pots & Trowels that is not strictly true, as a specialist in Dahlias for over 35 years, everything in your video would be classed as not best practice. I fully understand that everyone's ways can be different, but I get concerned when this sort of info is put out there as the way to do it. Good luck with your endeavours.
As you say Dave more than one way to do things. That’s the way I was taught as an apprentice 45 years ago and it’s always worked perfectly well for me, but your method also works. Main thing is to enjoy the dahlias in bloom.
Only just found your videos Martin, very good advice, and explained in great detail. My number one site now for info.🙂

I’m planning to do this. Question - is using rooting gel beneficial?
They will root without but roofing gel will encourage faster roots
Thanks for watching
Martin
Will thecuttings create new tubers? ❤
Yes by the end of the growing season they will make a large tuber. Martin
@@PotsTrowels thanks for the reply❗️
Can I ask, what progogator are you using ? I have researched for something similar but could not find anything.
I'll ask Martin! Thanks for watching -Sean

Hi Martin. Can I ask will the cutting go on to form its own tumors that cuttings can be taken in future. Sorry to ask but it's new to me.
