Hi Chris. Salmon fishing has changed dramatically over the years - the last ten years particularly. Ten years ago on my local river a friend and I had 15 kilts in a couple of hours - all safely returned. Today there are hardly any. But it's still a wonderful sport and fishing the fly rod is and always will be to die for. Best wishes Phil

Hi Chris, I have only discovered your Utube channel today and I am watching them and I must say they are by far the most helpful and informative videos on here. I, like you, are fairly new to Salmon fishing and I have also fished quite a lot on the Wye and Usk funnily enough on the same beats as you!! I would have to agree that £70 a day is a lot of money when your chance of catching a Salmon is more luck. £45 - 50 a day ticket is still plenty enough and you get a ghillie in Scotland, you are lucky if you get a detailed map in Wales. I love the life you are now leading. I wish I could have done it when I was younger but health and retiring too late in life unfortunately didn't allow. Anyway, keep up your excellent videos and thank you again for all the info etc.

If you are going to Scotland again next year I would recommend the river Ness Dochfour beats June/July, good fishing and great ghillies .

Hi Fraser, yes I looked hard at Dochfour Beats on the Ness. I was also going to check out the Oiuch (not sure if that is the correct spelling). I am actually going back up to Scotland again soon for my first time on the Dee. thanks again for subscribing and for taking the time to comment - much appreciated!

Hi Chris, really good video once again! Will be very useful to anglers new to some of those beats etc. Just for your info. I fished Meiklour on Friday 17th Feb. 2024, my first outing for this season. I have fished various beats on the Tay over the years. Our experience of our first time on Meiklour was very different to what you described. Ghillie Iain could not have been more helpful in terms of welcome, coffee, showuing us the beat, dram at Lunchtime and taking us out for an hour's harling etc, The water was so big that spinning (The cheating stick) unfortunately was really the best option although my pal chose to fly fish. I really liked the beat, at £48 / day, the pools and the setup and will go back. Oh and I managed two kelts (or Salmon lol) at 8lb and 10lb on a big silver & brass ABU salmo.! My back the next with with spining all day though ......ouch! Will eventually post a video on the Dogged Angler channel

I have looked back at this video a few times now, when i made the video I was a complete novice and I really didn't know the conventions of fishing in such a place. The owner reached out to me privately about my comments and we had a good chat about them. Now, with alot more experience behind me I feel I may have been a little too hard on them at the time and I have a little regret about not being able to go back there again. Thanks for sharing your experiences and i look forward to seeing your video. I also can't wait to be on the road again, but I can't leave until March 😵‍💫👍

Love this video. Some great points made. Colin on Dalmarnock is a great ghilie. I actually still class myself as a bit of a novice on the big rivers. Been salmon fishing since 2007. However mainly on small spate rivers with the single hander. You will see me on my videos in last few years fishing with my mates on the bigger rivers.

Ireland is your best bet. If you get the right water conditions you should be able to catch some Grisle or large seatrout. In past years I have caught Salmon on bait, spinner, prawn and of course my favourite flies. Try a Curry's red shrimp on one of Irelands great spate rivers. If the water conditions do not improve try the River Moy at Foxford or the Blackwater near Cork. Tight lines from an old Salmon Angler who now resides in AUS and would like to have another crack at the magnificent Salmon.

You should try the River Cree, River Luce and River Stinchar in South West Scotland. Mid size rivers.
Maybe the River Awe in Argyllshire.

Thanks for the mention Chris 👍you forgot to mention the WING COMMANDER 🤣🤣 I'm hopefully on the spey the middle of September for a week will confirm though, southern Ireland is fantastic for salmon fishing especially the river Blackwater its tidal so good runs of fish every 6 hours
Tight lines buddy hope to catch up and have a cast with you soon

Well no I though that Wing Commander has probably already got enough of an inflated ego. Alot of people are mentioning Blackwater so I will look at it as well. Can't make mid September, one of my staff is on holiday so I need to be in Herts. Tight lines

Kelts. Grilse. Multi Sea Winter. Fresh run. Mature. A salmon is a salmon and a bend in the rod is a bend in the rod Chris. But,,, when you land your first fresh run springer on a double handed fly rod you'll know 😉

ive enjoyed watching your experiences Chris, I'm also a novice salmon fly angler and have yet to catch ,one on the fly .... But i did catch a couple spinning on the Moy in county Mayo about 25 years ago! whilst my dad was flyfishing.
i think you would have a great chance on the moy.....(400 caught last week!!!!) The East Mayo angling association have quite a few miles of the river much of which is fly only

Hi Chris, Another great video / review of what's gone so far. I really need to go back and watch some of those earlier videos. As for where to go next, why not head home? So how about the Fowey or Camel? The Fowey (apparently) has some of the best late season salmon fishing in England. Saying that I've been reading the write ups in Trout and Salmon and this years Cornish salmon fishing has been absolutely terrible, but that does seem to be the way Salmon fishing is heading for, yet unfortunately the cost is historically and still prohibitively expensive. I'm sure you'll crack it soon. Just finishing off at work early here and heading for a few hours up at Stithians Reservoir - Tight Lines!

well funnily enough Simon I am back down in the Duchy next week for a month or so and will be looking at fishing maybe the Camel but I'd heard from a mate in Lostwithiel that there's been a lot of pollution and the salmon opportunities are low. I will look at the Fowey again, did fish there quite a bit a few years ago but will look at it again. Thanks and tight lines!

We used to live in SW Scotland having now moved to mid-Devon.The Nith and the Annan were our good local rivers. Try the Dalswinton Beat on the Nith and the Newbie Beat on the Annan. The Newbie beat will get fish coming in on the tide even in low water. A group of us fish the Aberdeenshire Dee for a week each year. Great fly water similar to the Spey. We fish Birse but may be difficult to get a day ticket. (Fishpal your best bet) Why have you not tried the Tamar must be your nearest salmon river perhaps we could take a days fishing sometime I have not tried it myself? PS. Just started to fish the Taw no luck as just. PPS. Had a days fishing at Newbie earlier this year and caught a 13lb springer in low water. So my lucky day. Tight lines.

Hi Dug, thanks it was the Dalswinton Beat I fished on before the pandemic - I reckon I need to look at that river again, I wasn't sure about the Annan but will take another look. I haven't fished the Tamar. TBH I am not sure why I overlooked it (!). I am back in the Duchy in July so will investigate. Thanks again for the suggestions. I fished the Taw and the Teign many times albeit for Salmon and found them to be great rivers. If you want, email me at cornishchristhefish@gmail.com and we can organise a day on the tamar! Thanks for the advice and the support - Chris

The biggest thing about catching a salmon is good old fashioned luck. Your fishing technique looks good enough to me. The only thing that will increase your chance of catching a salmon is to be on a river where the fish are actually running in numbers and to be fair the bigger rivers such as you’ve been fishing should give you that chance. Once you’re on the river it’s all about being lucky enough to cast your fly in front of a taking fish which is down to lady luck. Salmon fishing is no different to other types of fishing in that it gives you the chance to get out there and experience the wonders of nature. Don’t get too downhearted if you’re not catching, if you let it get to you it affects the way you fish and you inadvertently won’t catch. Have confidence and enjoy it and it’ll happen when you least expect it!

In fishing someone always makes a negative comment - honestly you cant win. I think the kelt you got was indeed an achievement and if you yourself enjoyed the experience then thats all that counts.
I'd add Cargill or Ballathie (upper beats) to the list of beats if you are coming up to the Tay. If you drive through central Scotland (M9) on the way then you could stop at Angling Active in Stirling and get a day ticket for the river Forth. The area called the Cruive Dykes would be best for the fly. If you are lucky enough to be in that area and it rains heavily then the river Allan can be a good spot. You'd fly fish the Allan with a standard 10ft trout rod which would play to your strengths as a trout fisher.
One thing to share about when you encountered the high water at Meikleour and had to spin. I'd personally have swung the toby. Due to the immense flow I'd have been chucking 40 or 60 gram tobies and then let it swing around like a fly. You get down deep and the takes are really good fun (sometimes they almost pull the rod from your hands). You will loose a few lures until you get the hang of it but it is much more effective. It also has the bonus of meaning you dont get a sore back.
If you are using braid then when the toby is swinging you can hold the braid under the index finger of the hand holding the rod. You will feel the toby wobble, feel it brush the river bed (so you know to lift the toby up before you get snagged) and feel the pull of a fish just like when fishing the fly. HTH Bollo

Thanks Bollo, I will look at those beats whilst planning my next trip. I was spinning with a toby on Meikleour but I am guessing I wasn't doing it right (again). Thanks for the advice and the support! Chris

If anybody tells you that the fly is the 'traditional' method of catching salmon, they are talking out of thier arse. bait, nets and lures were in use for a long time before the fly. Similarly, if they tell you that a kelt isn't a real salmon, then ' taigh nam gasta ort' is the correct response. Oh, Fochabers is pronounced Fock Abbers.
