- If you have had issues starting seeds, it is important to make sure you know some of the most common reasons seeds won't germinate properly because it is often user error and can be corrected for great success.

I cut open a grapefruit in late Oct 2017... the seed was split open already and very green. I remember thinking this little guy is fighting to survive! I took him out put him between 2 wet paper towels inside a water bottle and put it on top of my computer monitor. In about 1.5 weeks a sprout came out of the seed! I kept the towels moist and kept it in its little makeshift terrarium. In a couple more weeks I came in after the weekend to find it had fallen over in the bottle. It had sprouted 3 roots which had pushed it over. So now there is a crook in the tree. My little grapefruit tree now has 4 deep green leaves and is 2.5 inches tall! I didn't expect him to grow, this is now Jan 2018!

Not to take the wind out of your sails but ...The seed may not bear true to grapefruit you ate. Fruit trees are one variety of tree grafted to the rootstock of another variety that's stronger to disease.

I'm a bad gardener who loves gardening (tragic, I know haha) so when I see vague advice like "keep your soil moist and warm" or " don't overwater or underwater" it frustrates me as I'm left wondering, "well what does that MEAN". Notes on this video:
1. Read the back of the seed packet.
2. Plant at the correct planting depth. (A good general rule is no deeper than the nail on your pinky finger.)
3. Check the date on the package. (Older seed might not germinate as well.)
4. Make sure the soil is wet enough to be moist, but it should never be so damp that water will come out when you squeeze it. If it feels dry, it isn't moist enough.
5. Pay attention to soil temperature. If it's a summer crop, it likes warm soil. If it's a winter or fall crop, it can handle cooler soil (and warmer soil is ok, too). Cool soil is 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. More than 55 degrees is considered warm soil. 65 to 75 degrees (or 75 to 85 degrees?) is preferable for warm soil. Be careful with seed mats--some don't turn off at a specific temperature and can get too warm.
6. Check the seed packs to find out the number of days for germination.
This is excellent sound advice. I for one didn't read the back of the pack. My seeds were fully out of date.

At a rate of 25% loss per year, we have the following sequence:
1)100
2)75
3)75*.75=56.25
4)56.25*.75=42.18
5)42.18*.75=36.64
Etc.
This might help you better understand why you could grow your 87 year old tomato and how percent loss works over time.

The oldest mature seed that has grown into a viable plant was a Judean date palm seed about 2,000 years old. The oldest carbon-14-dated seed that has grown into a viable plant was Silene stenophylla (narrow-leafed campion), an Arctic flower native to Siberia. Radiocarbon dating has confirmed an age of 31,800 ±300 years for the seeds.

I'm glad I live in west texas . I sow directly into to soil and well I never have problems with germination of my seeds . I use spot watering on the areas I lay down my seeds and have only good results . I was taught by my great aunt how to garden this way she sadly passed five years ago at 103 years old . I find It funny people forgot plants grow without all the extra . bet you the Indians tribes eat well without having to start plants indoors!

Romaine, arugula, gourmet some others I plant them on Thursday and by Monday they start to show. Radishes take from 7-10days coliflower, broccoli can take up to 15-20 days to start seeing in my area. (:

What's your opinion of soaking seeds in Water or weak tea before sowing? When reading about chilli peppers for example, it's a common recommendation.
I like the "paper towel in bag method" on top of a heat matt ..... sure seems to work for me, and then I just transfer to pots once I noticed the seeds are germinated in a few days.
You think that would work for lettuce? I can't germinate them outdoors this time years as it is consistently above 30C.
Grub's Garden Hey Grub. Lettuce would germinate that way, but it is a more delicate crop so transferring them at germination would damage many. Just germinate it in seed germination trays and transplant. Once they grow 4 or more true leaves, they are even tough enough to separate them if you start them pretty close together. Hope that helps.

Kenny Poisson does this work for peppers? They seem to take longer to germinate than your typical veggies.
Andrew Campbell this is how I germinate my peppers specifically , so far I have 12 plants ready to grow this summer. High altitude in Colorado is brutal on Peppers growth, so I start them early to get a head start.

I always wondered about the seed storage marketed to preppers which seem to be quite expensive. Working on infrastructure for a new garden, ordered a few seeds from your store to get a fresh start with a few new varieties. @migardener Your info in general is really good, but freeze drying and vacuum sealing works on seeds just like food. You get much better germination after storage that way.
Funny thing about your Orange Roussollini seeds: I tried germinating three with the paper towel/baggie method and not one germinated. Gave up. Then tried sowing another three in cells with soil, all germinated. Weird. But very happy they were viable because those were the only three (out of 14 plant varieties, ~45 seeds) that did not germinate.

Honestly the paper towel trick is by far the greatest germination method I’ve ever used. 2-4 days any seed I’ve done has sprouted no problem lol

Bang them in a cup of water in a dark cupboard for a couple days. If the seeds are good they will pop

Hello from Yorkshire and thank you for a really interesting video. I have very little trouble germinating seeds indoors for example I sowed 20 sweet pea seeds before Christmas and all 20 have germinated. But... sowing outdoors is a different matter altogether, there germination is abysmal so any advice on that would be most helpful.

I have had watermelon, sweet pepper, and bush green beans in a sprouting tray for 3 weeks and they have not sprouted yet. Starting to get a bit concerned. I think that I may have planted them too deep, maybe 1-2 inches deep in a seed starting tray. Should I dig them up and start with new seed and plant them shallower? Any tips or advice would be appreciated!
Hi Luke, great video! Seeds like celery takes different way to germinate like you say. and basil or onion seeds need other type of germination, that I have some trouble germinating. also, arugula outside during this cold weather had germinate but hibernate. I haven't tried inside yet, or had just not able to recognize it between bok choy or arugula seedlings. I need more videos like this, and info on the back of package.

I put all my veggies in one store bought green house. Some like cucumbers sprouted up in 3 days. What do I do w the one that have grown out of soil because I thought I needed to lift lid but the others are not as fortunate to pop in so little days. Also some of the cucs came right out of the soil. I wasn't aware at the time that there was a specific way to plant these. Could it be I put the seeds in upside down. They look wierd. They look like the seed is at the end of what grew out. I wondering what I did wrong. J found your show, iv subscribed and will share. You do an excellent job explaining even to us newbies.

I usually buy my plants already started, but this year I am doing my own starts. I have limited space for starting, but every available space i have is being used to get them going. I had to purchase two heat mats and a grow light this year. It’s been crazy, but I have them going. Some are nice and others are not looking so good. That’s why I am here, because I am trying to learn what I am doing right and wrong about this new endeavor of growing our own produce. :)
I made the mistake of planting seeds to deep. 3 days later I dug them till I began to see the head of the plant trying to come out. I was very carful. Hope it works.
Any specific advice on improving germinating of seeds for sprouting in jars? Seen some people say to soak them overnight, some say only 2 hours is better. How often per day to rinse the seeds? I'm experimenting with brocolli seeds myself to see what works best, but curious what you've found.
What about keeping seeds in the freezer to extend their viability?
Can I re-use the soil for other vegetable growings when it's failed and has a bit of rotten seeds?
if the rate of loss of viability is 25% per year. year two would be 75%. year three would be 56.25% and year four would be 42.1875% and so on.

I started seeds - a lot of seeds!- for the first time last spring and had absolutely no issues getting any to germinate.
I was unable to get onions past the seedling stage though. I tried a couple times. I separated the seedlings and they turned brown a few days later. This was my only problem plant.
You may have crushed them when you were splitting them apart. They are almost impossible to kill but if you do manage to crush the neck of the onion they will surely die.
If I have a green sheen to the top of my soil, do I have "fungus", and should I dump the soil & start all over again? I am trying to grow lavender in a large pot. I thought I was doing things right, planting seeds just below the surface of the soil & being careful not to water too often. Is my soil ruined?
Fungus is usually white. It could be the baby lavender seedlings coming up in a thick mat.
I know you probably have been asked this question a thousand times but here it is again. I have high pressure sodium lights if I control the heat and put them far enough away from the starter bead can I use this yellow light to start/grow my seeds? I like your videos, find them very helpful, just received a lot of your seeds just waiting for the right time to start them. Keep the videos coming and thanks for the growing help.
HPS lights grow plants very well, the only thing is power consumption and heat you have to be concerned about.
Given the cost to run HPS lights, you may find a $40, 4500 lumen Walmart (or similar) LED shop light may be a good investment. I'm planning on three of them for my grow room next year.
I dug some black dirt out of the bottom of one of our ponds. It is pretty dry as we had a dry year and most of the pond dried up. I tried growing onion seeds in that dirt. They did not want to grow. What is the problem? The soil seemed hard after it settled in the cups. Could that be an issue? What should I do?
If I comply with all you said and still don't get a good germination rate ,can it be that the seeds are not properly manufactured or a problem within the lab?
In the video, you say planting depth is a maximum of 2x the seed thickness, or the length of your pinkie fingernail (typically less than 1/2 inch). But some seed packets say to plant 1/2 inch or even an inch deep (e.g. green beans). In general, the planting depth on the packet is much more than 2x the seed thickness. So which depth should I use? 2x seed thickness, or the instructions on the packet?
Maybe you could experiment by planting some of the seeds at one depth and some at another depth, to see what works better.
Useful tips. I'm going to try some tomatoes, peppers, and celery, along with some herbs and a few other things.

@3:17 to be fair, iv seen my grandpa, who found a old pack of pepper seeds once, had to be at least 20 years old, and he still managed to grow them, sitting in a small paper envelope for 20+ years and the plants still grew and the peppers looked and tasted great...
Regarding the seed vaults... Is that true even if they're kept frozen?

Fun fact: seed packets that are expired can be used up to four years past their expiration date but the seed may loose their germination percentage

Any suggestions on planting Cayenne Peppers from seed? I purchased some organic dried cayenne peppers, took the seeds and planted them. But after 8 weeks only one seems to slowly germinate. I've tried prepping some in a water soak and using seed pods, and others I just placed in soil. And the one in regular soil, no pod or prep seems to be germinating.
Depth is about right. Maybe it's a little too moist? I'm using a pod cover.
Any other thoughts or suggestions? Wonder if it is just taking longer or I start over

Hi, I love all your videos. So aside from it 100 degree weather, I am doing seeds I've bought, and picked on the wild. Like yucca seeds, salvia, black eyed susans, dandelions, and some others. 3 weeks into this only black eyed susans and a few dandelions have germinated. Now the temperature is somewhat reasonable as well, I'm using an agronomic see germination soil, and a mini greenhouse. I might just start over keeping the seeds that geminate. But I was wondering, when you don't know what kind of plant it is. Like for example a yucca, it's a desert plant so it's use to heat and lack of water but it'll need to geminate in spring.
I planted some ball squash seeds 10 days ago and they still have not sprouted. I dug one of the seeds up to look at its condition and it was still completely in tact. These seeds have been outside in small starter pots while waiting to germinate. We have had lots of weather fluctuation with many cloudy days and cool nights since I planted them. Should I replant a new crop or continue watching if these seeds sprout?
Replant... Germinate in paper towels. It's more predictable
In a prepper scenario, best potion is kind of to invest in heirlooms because you can harvest new seeds every year.

Hi I planted Poinsettia seeds early August. I scanned the internet for information on when and how to plant the seeds, but didn't find anything helpful. I bought the seeds on Amazon and the packet was plain white and didn't have any information and no date either. One website said that the seeds should be planted 1/2 deep and they don't need much water. So I spray them lightly once a day. Its been 4 weeks and there is no sign of germination. A week later I got cactus seeds and planted those in moist soil. One website suggested sprinkling the seeds on moist soil and covering them with a fine layer of soil. It also said to sparingly water the seeds. So I lightly spray them with water 2-3 times a week. I'm still hoping for the best. I am located in Gurgaon, India and our current temperatures are around 28C to 35C. What I would like to know from you is if it is the right time to plant poinsettia and cactus seeds and how much water do each require? How long does germination take. I got mixed cactus seeds. Do cactus seeds need to be planted in sand? I've had great luck with tomato and capsicum seeds and enjoyed a nice crop too.
I'm new to the whole vegetable gardening I live in upstate NY. I wasnt able to start my seeds indoors is this gonna be a problem or should I still plant them outdoors. These are the seeds I have right now. I also dont know what I should plant next to each other etc.

i have 20 year old seeds that have a virtual 100% germination rate because they are stored properly. It's very species dependant, as well as proper storage. Even short lived seeds such as tomatoes and eggplants should have no noticeable decline in germination rates after only 12 months if stored properly for their type.
one question is there anyway to prolong seeds viability lol not for dooms day or anything just i have small space so 1 bag seeds is more than 2 years for me if i seal and put it in fridge will it last longer or any other method?

So I’m trying to start some African dwarf cedar seeds. I’d like to imagine that they would be more of a cool or just warm soil? I have them in seed starting medium with some added perlite and it’s been I wanna say 2 weeks still nothing. They are in a plastic bottle with the lid still on but vented daily for fresh air on a heat mat and gently watered with a spray bottle every other day also with good humidity. Feeling like they just need time. I started some Persian silk trees by seed using the same method and they sprouted within 4 days. Sadly I can’t find much info on these cedar trees by seed.

Hey man I have a sapodilla tree thats dropping fruit right now, do you want any seeds? The fruit is nicknamed the brown sugar fruit, and the tree makes a sap that can be used to make gum. Thought maybe you would want to make your own organically grown gum maybe. Got it when i was a kid visiting a farm i took a branch and rooted it where it is now. It ALWAYS has fruit but they only seed to ripen when the cold comes. Never fertilized it. P.S. Thanks for the tips, was about to build a frame to mount some grow lights, and build another bed. These will be my first times using seed.

Hello! I thought it would be good to plant my beet seeds a bit deeper because here in this particular area it’s so hot that even the paint peels. I’m facing south with NO shade. Using a mister. My beet seeds sprouted after 6 days. They are in full ☀️, right up against a wall. I’m worried about soil drying out so I’ve been misting seed beds when the bed looks dry on top. I need advice because I still have to water but will I burn my seedlings when I mist them? Is it too much water to mist when it’s dry? I rigged a shade area so the leaves don’t burn up? Your opinion is welcome.
My problem is getting the seeds to germinate. My problem is them dying off a few days to a week after they start. What am I doing wrong? 😞
Heather, I believe your problem may be called dampening off, which is when they are watered to much from above. if they are thinner and fall over at media level . seedling should always be watered from bottom up.

Now I started growing strawberries at the same time. This is my 3rd attempt. I even used frozen seeds like someone suggested in another video. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Help!!
Peppers are one of those plants with a longer germination rate. I also have a hard time being patient with these.
peppers can be tricky. They require time, heat, and hate HATE overly moist soil.

Think peppers, think heat. Peppers usually have the highest germination rate between 25C(77F) and 30C(86F) soil temperature and take about a week. At 20C (68F) the time to germinate doubles and below that temperature and above 30C (86F) the germination rate suffers. Remember to measure the soil temperature, not air. And that wet soil through evaporation may keep the soil too cool and lead to the seeds rotting.
The Life of Jenelle Williams pepper seeds like light and warmth, mine like moist soil but not overly wet, I use a grow light and a heat mat underneath with a timer. I leave mine on about 10 hours a day, hope this helps😄
I just sprinkled a bunch of seeds into the soil, covered with like 1 cm of more soil, then watered. It did dry out at two points. But if it dries out and you re-water it, it should be fine, right? Also how many seeds can I plant in one place? I had like maybe 6 seeds per "slot" or whatever

I did some last year, 2 different types that came from previous peppers. One came up right away, the others I had given up on and left in the dark, week and half later it had sprouted. I now have 4 types and only 1 has come up so far, but I won't give up as I will try everything. Be patient, leave somewhere warm.
Does planting depth have to be exact
Do you use Rootmaker flats? I have found them to either be too expensive or the shipping cost is ridiculous. What's your view on these? The Wisconsin Vegetable Gardener (Joey Baird) recommends these. Thanks.
I have a question buddy I recently planted seeds in a 72 pods crate and I accidentally left outside and it poured down rain and flooded my crate with pretty cold temperatures about 50degrees I tried drying it a bit and put them on a warm mat and it's been about roughly 2 weeks and I have some seeds that sprouted maybe 3 centimeters but suddenly stopped growing ,my question do you think the seeds hot ruined?and what should I do?

Here in America we don't use the metric system. So you would probably have to look it up on a chart like I have to do if a recipe comes in the metric system.

Don't disregard older seeds. Remember how seeds were found in Egyptian pyramids, and they grew just fine. Now exactly how old might those have been??
Seeds have also been found in urns in caves, away from humidity and sunlight. Those also did grow just fine.

If I might have planted the seedlings too deep, can I take off some of the dirt and salvage it to pop through
Hey! Just watched your video, as I am VERY frustrated this year. I started various seeds around mid-March. Tomatoes, peppers and herbs. Some were new seeds, some a year or 2 old in packets, and a few were seeds I saved from last year's harvest. Last year I started seeds with prob 95% germination. This year, out of 30 peat pots planted, 13 are growing great and 17 never did anything. All planted and cared for following seed packet directions, heating mats (with a barrier), kept moist. What do you think happened? HELP!
