    • @tradingnichols2255
      @tradingnichols2255 2 місяці тому

      @@unholydonuts I fairly frequently buy both because of production reasons, but if I just gamed I couldn't possibly justify it. I really tried on a setup for my wife to go AM5, for more "future proofing", but I have more AM4/previous gen Intel type parts laying around and even if I didn't, the price drop and newer things still costing more for what it does just didn't make sense for the performance needed.
      My wife and I have used identical laptops for 4 or 5 years and they were not high end then. This upgrade to real PC's is absolutely massive and cost less.
      They sell barely better laptops all these years later in a similar category. (They replaced 1650 on low end gaming laptops with 3050 🤦‍♂️)
      At work, another department boss needed a massively powerful computer for my colleague. Or so he thought. I ended up getting him an i5 desktop quite a few generations old but it's like 13% faster than my 13 or 14th gen i5 laptop. My coworker is hugely happy with it...but his boss originally looked at specs from his server login...I don't think he realizes he checked on his virtual desktop instead of his PC. It took a while, but I was like, we don't issue anyone anything that powerful and at one point it clicked. That's the server processor! 🤣
      PC performance is just massively better.

      @@unholydonuts you inspired a great response and UA-cam lost it. I got typing quite a bit so I'll do the shorter version...
      I agree. Lol. Okay, maybe I'll say a little more than that. 😂
      Having similar computing to the OP, my computers from before this weren't fast 4 years ago but they did all I needed. Cheaper gaming laptops really haven't gotten much better. Spend the same for about the same performance all these years later or go PC? Eventually, I'll need a better laptop, but if updated it's thermals, just like you do a GPU...it made it faster than when new. Was forced to get a new m.2...only better and larger than before. Had to replace memory a couple times, but replacing the whole laptop makes no sense.
      Okay, I went a completely different direction. Hopefully, youtube let's me send this!

    That look at "what GPUs should have cost" last week was really great, and it shows in how easily you were able to make certain comments in this video -- "just look at the previous video to see why" etc.
    You've somehow put numbers to "what makes a good deal"? which seems like it should be impossible, but I do think you did a good job with it.
    Thanks for the updates on the GPU market as always. I hope price/performance stays at least as "okay" as it is now, with at least a few models here and there where the big three are brave enough to challenge price/perf trends by being even better. Of course I wouldn't mind a deluge of cheap fast GPUs, but I think even one stand-out value product on the entry to mid tiers would win back a lot of good will. Anyway, I guess we'll see, but I've got my GPU for now and don't need any upgrades myself.

They CONSTANTLY talk about Vram and future proofing but that extra 4gb from 12-16gb isn't really going to do that much in the future. If it was 20 or 24gb i think the future proof argument would matter more.

    • @AnonymousUser-ww6ns
      @AnonymousUser-ww6ns 2 місяці тому

      @Z you are correct. But I would there is a case where buying too much vram isn’t worth it as the GPU compute will die out before you run out of VRAM.
      I would say at 1080p 12GB is futureproof.
      At 1440p 16GB is futureproof.
      Only a 4K resolution is where I would consider getting 20 or 24GB for futureproof.
      But the majority of gamers game at 1440p so I would say 16GB VRAM offers a nice balance that will last 5 years before having to upgrade

      The original RTX 4080 super gets discontinued and rebranded the RTX 4070TI SUPER for $700
      A new RTX 4080 super sku that gets 20GB of VRAM and at least 2,000 more CUDA cores selling for about $900.

    unrelated; you guys discussed upcoming VRAM technology (GDDR7) with PAM 3 signaling. and touched on the meaning of PAM 3 and PAM 4 - super interesting fact; PAM4 doesn't actually work. which i think is why they are trying PAM 3 - explanation:
    PAM 4 at it's typical speed is UNABLE to completely slew between "00" and "11" in a single tik. (may be different data meanings, but essentially the LOWEST to HIGHEST voltage positions and highest to lowest, they are not possible (edit - observing MICRON's website it's actually 00-11-10-01 - therfore it cant do 0010 or 1000). The same way an LCD pixel can only be driven so fast before overshoot - PAM 4 has basically the same limitation, it has to be slowed right down to be accurate. Assuming the PAM4 voltage positions "1-2-3-4" mean 00 01 10 11 - then any time data contains 0011 or 1100 - it has to be sent wrong and rely on ECC to fix it after (meaning a bunch of the extra bandwidth is then taken up with extra check-data).
    If you watch Jensens 2020 ampere keynote; he says "with G6X we can transmit twice the amount of data in the same period of time as GDDR6" while at the same time showing a slide with
    1: A litteral longer period of time XD, and
    2:all possible data paths which demonstrated exactly this 1100 limitation.
    The specifics are also covered in pretty good detail on microns website. Would be an interesting technical discussion- have a great night

    4060Ti 16GB is less of a premium vs the 7700XT in the UK and I do think the 4060Ti can make a good case for itself with the superior upscaling solution and a far better power profile. Also with PS5 pro being a thing that looks to be pushing RT quite a bit I think the extra RT capability for the 4060Ti will help give it some decent legs for those who hang onto parts for a good while.
