I never get tired of hearing this song. Obviously Steve's voice is angelic, but the guitar solo is just so rhythmic and melodic I can't wait to get to it.
The combination of Steve Perry's vocals and Neal Schon's lovely lead guitar, extolling the virtues of their hometown, San Francisco, makes this one of their most memorable efforts.
Perry grew up in the southern San Joaquin valley. Neal was from San Mateo. The song was originally about Los Angeles; "...and the sun shines on LA." He changed it after he came to the Bay Area to join Journey. Even so, this is my favorite Journey song by far.
Steve Perry is pure vocal perfection. He could sing the phone book, and I'd add it to my Playlist! 😃 A few of my favorites are; Mother, Father (live in Houston), and a solo song "I stand Alone".
More Bay Area Memories, We used to cruise the Strip on E.14th Street in San Leandro, my hometown in the 70s. I graduated from Marina High in SL in 1975 and my cruising years were around 72 thru the early 80s when it moved to Castro Valley and Walnut Creek.
Growing up with Journey in the early 80's Steve was the hands down knock out vocalist of the day. Rock's finest tenor. When you have this followed by the Escape album Journey was THE band to listen to. No disrespect to any of Journey's later lead vocalists but those of who grew up in that time can't associate Journey with any other lead vocalist.
Steve and Freddy Mercury of Queen were at the top of the heap two greatest singers from say 75 to 85. This is such a great song. Kudos to all involved making this song sooooo great!!!
San Leandro Boy here. What city did your Mom grew up in? WInterland was our go to concert venue along with the Coliseum Day On The Greens, The Cow Palace, and other great Bay Area Venues.
I too really like Steve Perry, his first solo after leaving Journey was 'Oh Sherry', which is my wife's name and kind of transposed our lives at the moment (today is our 41st wedding anniversary). I was saddened when he developed that neurosis that eventually caused him to quit, he was getting so upset before shows that he would throw-up and become lethargic, getting so bad he felt like he had to stop for his sanity.
It wasn't just the emotional toll, though he has said he developed a form of PTSD about touring. The steady grind of their touring schedule caused his body to break down. He developed a severe bone disease in his mid 40's more common to people in their 80's. His reluctance to replace a crumbling hip joint caused the band to move on without him. He has now had multiple such operations.
One of my favorite Journey songs. I always thought that this song was a very homey song. It gives me a "Cheers" San Francisco style feeling. Just relaxing and talking with friends over a meal or something to drink. The vocals by Perry are the sweet icing on this cake of relaxation showing basic hometown pride and enthusiasm. A great song. A great reaction from you both. If you want to hear another beautiful song. I recommend Barry Manilow's "Could it Be Magic" a beautiful song from a great singer and Songwriter.
I am sure your Mom knows that Neil Schon the guitarist and Gregg Rolie on Keyboards came from Santana and along with Ross Valory and the other band members created the original Journey band.
OH MY STARS!!! You ladies just made my day!!! I have had a crush on Steve Perry since I was 16 years old! He is mine by seniority!!! I saw Journey in Ft. Worth Tx sitting on the front row (HEAVY SIGH). Thank you so much for sharing!!! Love from Texas!!! Great reaction BTW!!!
I've seen Journey live twice. I wish I could've seen them when Steve was with them. He is my favorite male rock voice. Well, it's a very close tie between him and Freddie Mercury. Arrnel Pineda has been their lead singer now for 15 years. I couldn't relate to your mom any more than I do right now. If we didn't have Google Maps these young people nowadays would be absolutely lost. I don't even think that they teach it in Geography anymore.
I'm a map-a-holic, History and Geography along w/some of the other sciences were my best subjects in school. If I find me an old map I will literally spend hours going over it, there a lot of knowledge you can gain from old maps. I've driven all over this country constantly and not once have I used a NAV system
Not a huge Perry/Journey fan, but this is one of my favorite songs of theirs for sure. I love the harmonies and the sentimental vibe, plus that great guitar solo.
Great choice ladies. I'm not sure who has better hair, Steve Perry or Baby Gap. I just have one question for BG; Do you love Steve Perry? In my opinion, this is Journey's best lineup. Gregg Rolie on keyboards, and Neal Schon (lead guitar) were both with Santana prior to Journey.
Top tier listening from a top tier singer. No question Steve and Freddie Mercury were the greatest singers from late 70s into the late 80s. Actually two of the greatest singers ever. Miss u lovely ladies! Hope you return soon.
Steve Perry is a vocal beast and Neal Schon is underrated as a guitarist he started playing with Santana at 15 years old! Houston Mother Father live 1981
The keyboard player in this video is Greg Rolie. He sang on the early album's and also was a founding member of none other than Santana.. Great music and great review as always lovelies. 👍
Im listening to music since 1958 I believe Steve Perry is the greatest singer ever. Of course there's many great ones but he is the cream of the crop in a league of his own. He was a long hiatus from singing tho did Christmas songs the past years and he plans to do original songs soon. 🎉 Woohoo!
Known fact : Although the band was from the San Francisco area, the song was written in Los Angeles where the band relocated. Steve Perry said the lyrics originally was going to be " When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on LA" but it didn't sound right at the time. So It's not about the SF Bay, it's about LA.
I would like to recommend Edgar Winters Group, “Frankenstein”? The album cut is very good, but they do it live and it’s amazing musicianship! Enjoying your reactions. Thank You
One thing that makes music from this era so good is that it was a group effort. Steve Perry may have had the lead lines, but him solo would not have had the magic that they as a group were able to muster.
Just say it ladies! Steve Perry has so much appeal!!! You guys are skirting around his sexual appeal!!! Of course, his voice is awesome. Back in the day, I was always in love with his interesting nose!!! Steve Perry is awesome.
Journey is the combination of great artists with much creativity and as guitar player I'm a big fan of Neal Schon for adding his perfect playing to the voice of Steve Perry. The 70s have to offer a lot of interesting music styles, this one is without any human voice but the instruments speak to You😁: ua-cam.com/video/IHJcNpot1q4/v-deo.html

Journey "Stay awhile" is another beautiful song
This song exemplifies 1978 -1981 Journey at their best.
I never get tired of hearing this song. Obviously Steve's voice is angelic, but the guitar solo is just so rhythmic and melodic I can't wait to get to it.
im a milennial that grew up lissing to 50 60 70 and 80 so i fortunate to see journey the 31st of last month
Just Iconic!!!! Steve Perry, "The Voice". what great harmonies.

The entire Infinity album is a masterpiece. Keep going!!!!😎

I love the video of live in Osaka 1980. Great concert. You can find it on UA-cam. When they pair Lights with Stay a While it'll just melt your heart

Of all the Journey lineups, this is the best. Dunbar on drums, and Rolie on keyboards. Great song, and album.

You know..... for many many years Steve Perry has been known as "The Voice"
This song brings me back to my childhood. My dad, sister and I would sing this song all the time
I am sure your Mom knows that Neil Schon the guitarist and Gregg Rolie on Keyboards came from Santana and along with Ross Valory and the other band members created the original Journey band.
Journey mother father, meatloaf, for crying out loud, would love to see you react to this. Love the channel
This version of journey was untouchable!!
Grew up in a hippie commune out at Big Sur…. Monterey was local city but it was really cool to go up to Haight and hang.
A beautiful song to two exquisite beauties fabulous!😙😙😙
Don't know if you've reviewed this one, but try Journey...Lights and Stay Awhile, Live 1980. His, "live" vocals are amazing.
I've seen Journey live twice. I wish I could've seen them when Steve was with them. He is my favorite male rock voice. Well, it's a very close tie between him and Freddie Mercury. Arrnel Pineda has been their lead singer now for 15 years.

The best lead singer in the history of music.
They usually play this song with Stay Awhile right after it.
What a lovely sounding song. Journey tapes were played until they wore out in the 80's and 90's.
Edit: superb use of the nahahnah nahs
Great reaction and great taste in vocalist talent.
Lived in the S.F. Bay area (Marin and Sonoma counties) for 50 plus years. Beautiful then, not now.
I'm a map-a-holic, History and Geography along w/some of the other sciences were my best subjects in school. Not a huge Perry/Journey fan, but this is one of my favorite songs of theirs for sure. I love the harmonies and the sentimental vibe, plus that great guitar solo.
"Who's Crying Now", "After the Fall", "Stone in Love" and "I'll Be Alright (without you)" are all great songs w/ great guitar solo outros.
I saw these guys in San Diego back in the 80s. Great concert
I love Steve Perry, TOO!
There’s another version it’s called lights/ stay awhile it’s on one of their live albums
Gregg Rolle is the best of Journey! I was backstage 2x's. Always gentlemen...but Gregg from Santana! An icon!
You guys should react to Journey. You will not be disappointed!
Top tier listening from a top tier singer. No question Steve and Freddie Mercury were the greatest singers from late 70s into the late 80s. Actually two of the greatest singers ever. Miss u lovely ladies! Hope you return soon.

This song is about Toledo, Ohio and how the ocean beach front view of the city lights is so beautiful.
LOL...San Francisco/ Bay Area...nice try
Eagles "The last resort" another pristine voice.
Steve Perry was my teenage crush.
I would like to recommend Edgar Winters Group, “Frankenstein”? The album cut is very good, but they do it live and it’s amazing musicianship! Enjoying your reactions. Thank You

this is crazy
cl - post up cl - chuck cl - tie a cherry cl - hello bitched jessi - cold blooded
Next react the who won't get fooled again live 1978
There was a soulful quality to this one that their later ballads couldn't match. Definitely prefer this era of their career.
👍👍👍🇸🇪😎💕
Oh the Nimitz freeway.
Suggestion: Bruce Springsteen - Secret Garden.
Could you ladies please react to "Lover's Cross" by Jim Croce ?...Thank you much...
I second this!
Please react to this female fronted Japanese Metal band called Cross Vein.
Song: Immortal Beauty
Just say it ladies! Steve Perry has so much appeal!!! You guys are skirting around his sexual appeal!!! Of course, his voice is awesome. Back in the day, I was always in love with his interesting nose!!! Steve Perry is awesome.
Just recently discovered your channel...have you reacted to any videos by Kelly Clarkson??
