Beautiful pics and sound comparison... Thanks. - Since you made this video, Canon has came out with Cine lenses... Are they only for video? No AF, it looks like. One such lens is: EF Cinema prime CN-E50mm T1.3 L F (EF mount).
The EF has more of a classic film vibe to it, which is to say I personally prefer its character. The RF can definitely feel a bit over-sharp for some styles. If you're the type of shooter that digs the Fujifilm vibe, the EF is the way to go. For super high-res commercial stuff, the RF would definitely win out. I'd be super interested to see the same lens comparison on your C70, graded to match your photo style and the EF with and without the .71x adapter.
EF 50L is one of my favourite FX lenses from Canon, i really love the look it produce (as well as 85L II), part of their character is that they are full of flaws (sharpness, flare, vignette and so one) so if i need a sharp 50, i just go for 50/1.8 one. From the RF lineup, the RF35IS really stood out for me, much better than EF35IS and original EF35L and the wide angle macros full of bokeh are just beautiful.
Cool video!! I am planning to buy Canon EOS R6 soon and I'll buy RF 50mm F1.2 for sure. What will be the best lens with Canon EOS R6 for landscape photography, please?? Soon I will be into the Smoky Mountains!
Loved this video quality a lot, for a guy who listens to hip hop music all the time I really enjoyed the audio part of this everything was just high quality and relaxing
Hey, awesome review! Just one thing… the EOS R has the command dial just like the some Pentax, Nikon and Sony’s. Up top in the back besides the LCD screen so you can use it with your thumb without loosing the grip of the camera contrary to the back dial which you would have to loose your grip to operate it. The EOS R5 incorporates the same layout without the thumb bar and the extra wheel and the AF button in a better place. Cheers! Really enjoy the review!!!
Thanks for the excellent review, well done. Were any of the EF images shown at 2:21 & 2:31sharpened? The eyelashes can been seen in fine detail. Were they shot at F/1.2? The images, shot at F/1.2, from my EF50 F/1.2 + EOS R combo are not as sharp as the EF ones in your review (yours are much sharper). Thanks.
I recently borrowed the 85 1.2 RF from Canon to compare to my EF II version and money aside I do prefer the newer lens for my work but because I shoot mostly w/the 28-70 f2 RF already it's hard to justify and I'll stay with my EF for now. Great work I'm typically not impressed w/these kinds of videos with models on UA-cam but this work is actually creative and illustrates the differences between the lenses nicely
Hey there! Thanks so much for watching & for the comment. I am really curious about both lenses, the RF 28-70 and RF 85. Especially the 85. I'm curious to know what you think about them in terms of IQ/usability/etc. I'm hoping to rent at some point. Thanks again! :)
@@TheZachMendez I'm mostly an editorial photography and the 28-70 is sublime, I sold my 35 1.4, 50 1.2 and will sell my 24 1.4, I never thought I could love a zoom lens so much but the way it renders the background is so fantastic hard to explain until you've used it a bunch -- the 85 is wonderful and I used it for 2 magazine assignments and a commercial shoot -- I love it just can't justify the price tag
Ok... I'm not a Canon shooter but I watched this video to the end, mostly because your voice makes you sound like a good person, there was ancillary information that was helpful, and the video was beautiful
RF glass seems to really unlock R mount cameras' fullest technological potential. I've noticed even my cheap RFS 10-18mm pancake lens, just how nice and sharp it gets when I was in Cuba doing beach shots on my R7 vs, my old beasty Sigma 18-35. Now I know they're not the same lens built for the same purpose, or have the same aperture. But performance wise; the RFS locked on better, faster, and slightly sharper but retained less detail than that old EFS. Now, this got me very curious. I have an old EF 70-200 f2.8L version 1 non-IS and I got some really nice shots with it. How much better would the RF version be?
I just discovered your channel. Oh Wow !!! What a creative spirit, what talent you have !!!. I am a former Nikon shooter. My first camera was a Nikon F2 and my last a D850 ... I am looking to acquire the R5 and the RF 50mm f / 1.2 lens. You have been able to highlight the pros and cons of both very well. Thank you for this very informative video and once again your photos are simply stunning. Congratulations for your work.
Thank you so much, Mario, for the kind words! I'm so glad that you found the channel. I think the R5 + RF 50 would make an incredible combo! I was so impressed with the RF 50. I haven't tried the R5 yet, but would really love to test it at some point. Thanks so much for watching! :)
Love this one! I do landscape and macro, and your contrasting the two lenses in the real world use is exactly what I needed! Unfortunately, this means more money, but it’s better to make the right choice the first time!
Don’t know if it’s my Ef50 lens problem or a generic problem, when I shot photos which have messy back scenes (e.g. tress with light), I can see super strong purple in the bokeh
OMG - I hope you love it as much as I do!! I loved the RF lens too, but I'm serious when I say that using it rekindled my love for the EF! Haha...The EF is just so good and really stands up well to the newer version. Thanks so much for watching and for the comment :)
Hmm have you tried it the other way around? The EF on the R6 and on the R the RF lense? Could be also the sensor is better cause R6 doesn't have that internal filter (forgot what it's called)
WOW - what incredible images! I've got some old Tamron lenses that work perfectly fine for me and I am happy using the converter with them. The images are all perfectly fine and I am happy with them. I'm only a novice photographer and will never need to have super pin sharp images. Thank you for such a great comparison and your thoughts. Take care and be safe out there....
Great video! Thank you! I have been using a Canon R6 with EF lenses, using the adapter. I have found that this combination creates very small file sizes. The file sizes are smaller than what my old Canon 60D produces. Have you run into this?
Great comparison...thank you. However, Canon has accomplished an amazing feat building the RF adapter for EF L lenses. Perhaps with the exception of the 50/1.2, I doubt the RF lens is superior in terms of sharpness to the EF L. In terms of build quality, price, resolving power and image quality...EF L lenses are a far better bargain. Just my opinion, but I do own one RF lens (:] and a host of EF L used on my R and R5.
Totally! The adapter is amazing for me since I only own EF lenses. All of them work so well on the R camera system- better than the 5D series even! I love those EF lenses. Thanks so much for watching! :)
Great video and interesting to see the older EF 50 lens held up so well. I think the subject matter (beautiful models) and your creative interpretation transcends the technical differences between these lenses! Having said that the new RF 50 is a great kens that in the right hands can take photography to a new level.
Mr. Mendez, you are a simply outstanding photographer. You really captured the tender beauty of these two models in such a dreamy setting. I'd be really appreciative if you could tell me how much the chromatic aberrations (color fringing) of the EF lens gets in the way. I'm debating whether to go the SONY A7IV + 50mm f/1.4 GM or the Canon R6 + 50 EF 1.2 (as a non-pro I can't justify $2300 for the RF). I love the look of Canon raw files, but I'm concerned that the color fringing on the EF lens. What are your thoughts, as a pro portrait photographer?
I have a question, does your RF lens work noiselessly? Because I have 24-105 / 4 and you can't hear him when AF works. Recently I used RF 50 / 1.2 and you could hear how it works. Is it normal ?
I believe it is normal, although I only tested the lens for a few days, and that was a while ago, so I don't remember in detail how it sounds when using it. Sorry I can't be of more help. Thanks for watching!
Really great question! Yeah, that is definitely an option to get a bit of an edge on the EF images, although in my experience most of the time you don't need much when shooting with the R cameras. I'm generally pleased with the amount of sharpness from the EF lenses. Thanks so much for watching & for the comment! :)
This is the video I've been looking for! Trying to decide between the R5 and R6 and I'm stunned by the image quality out of the R6 with the EF! (currently on a 5dmk3). Excited either way I go! Would you say you at all "miss" or want for the additional resolution? (I know it depends on your crop style etc).
Thank you so much for watching! I am so glad you found the video helpful. Honestly I sometimes would like a bit more resolution, yes, but for the vast majority of work I am so pleased with the look of the images that I don't really mind. 20 MP is still a lot of MP, and is more than capable of producing high quality, printable images, especially with a new sensor like the one in the R6. I hope this helps! Thank you! :)
@@TheZachMendez defintely helps! Especially seeing it from a working perspective. I picked up a 50 f1.2 but was a little frustrated by focus so I'm really looking forwards to the new AF
Since day one my EF has stunned me in its capabilities. Kinda like golf, who can get better results? Tiger woods with a set of $200 clubs or you with a set of $10,000 clubs. Look what Ansel Adams was using, a box with a drape attachment.
Love the vid and I do prefer the EF and its "imperfections". That said and now with time past from this vid, how do you think the EF would hold up to the R5 sensor? Have you used this lens on the R5? I ask because my favorite lens of all time is my V4 35mm cron. I have had it since 89 on an M6 (film) but unfortunately it is not up to the M10R sensor challenge for me anyway. Looking to get in to an R5 and the EF 50L. Obviously rent is the way but just curious your thoughts if you think it could hang or fall apart at that res. Cheers
Zach, I’m recently switching my EF lens for their RF counterparts. I haven’t used the control ring, not available on EF. The question, have you acquired more, if any, RF lens and if yes, how are you using the control ring? I get it would be a personal preference. What is yours?
Hey there! I shoot only with RF lenses now actually haha... I do not use the control ring on any of them. It is sort of useless for me since the camera bodies have enough dials for me. I love the RF lenses for the image quality (color, sharpness, bokeh) and autofocus speed/accuracy. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video Zach, I just picked up an R5 to replace may aging, but wonderful, 645z. The price of the RF lenses is daunting. I see that there's a 135mm F1.4L on the RF roadmap! Time to sell another one of the kids! Brian in San Luis Obispo
I got the canon 50MM F1.2L lens and I have it since 3 years now and you can get SHARP photos with the canon EF 50MM F1.2L if you know how to use it and if you understand photography and LIGHT
Hi Zach, great video! I am experiencing such haziness with my 50 ef on my r5, when shooting backlit. Contrast can barely be brought back. Have you experienced this? I'm wondering if my R5 is malfunctioning
Sometimes, depending on the angle of the sun, this will happen. I would suggest experimenting with it more and finding angles were the light flares but doesn't haze out the image. It can be tricky at times, but I think it's pretty normal and I'm quite used to it at this point. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching! :)
Beautiful video, thanks to UA-cam for recommending. I’d love to know if you’ve tried the RF50mm f1.8 they brought out, no IS but at £209 its an attractive option.
@@TheZachMendez I'm assuming you were using an ND filter. If so, did you use a dark enough setting to have a low f stop? Or was it a higher f stop since you already had motion blur.
First I want to say I really love your images. Very inspirational. I am a 15 year Nikon shooter and am in the process of deciding if I'm going to switch to Canon. Mostly for their auto focus capabilities and the better in camera 10bit 422 video quality for weddings and events. It will be an expensive switch because I will need all new glass. Right now I have RF glass on my list but had thought about just going EF and purchasing everything used. With 2 new cameras and the glass I want I'm looking at like 24k. If I went EF it would be around 16 to 18k. This is including replacing my triggers and on camera flash with new Canon compatible versions. Thank you for your video. I will be going with the RF versions. But, your video has also made me want to at some point pick up a few EF versions. They are dreamier. They have a character all their own. At least with the one lens you are using. Thanks again. Subscribed!

Thanks so much for watching and for the sub!! Yes, I definitely want to start my RF lens collection at some point - they are amazing! I really loved using the 50 while I had it.
Yeah I've tried with both cameras. I don't notice the R6 being sharper than the R on it's own. The lens you use heavily impacts how sharp your images are. Theoretically the R would be more detailed because of its higher MP count. The RF lenses are objectively sharper than the EF lenses. There is no denying that! Thanks for watching! :)
Hey, I saw you have used a nd filter for your pictures. I thought that ND Filters would be only used for video? Could you make a video of how and why you use nd filters for pictures. Thank you 🙌🏼
Yes! I want to make this video actually. I use the ND filters to bring a bit of blur to the image with a slow shutter. Just an artistic effect. Thanks for watching!
I use the EF 50/1.2 and I find it very sharp even wide open when shot on my R5. When I used to shoot it on my EOS 1Dx mkii I found it soft wide open. I think it was just my unsteady hands and the heavier camera. This video makes me curious to see how much sharper it can get with the RF f1.2. In the meantime I’m starting to get the Leica itch again and might waste a ton of money on an M10R with a ridiculously overpriced lens. It’s an addiction for me. 🤷♂️
You need very good eyes, and an accurate Viewfinder of the Leica M. Been there for 2 decades and let me say, you get much better consistency and results with the canon 1.2 than with the Summilux 1.4…
Beautiful photos! I went with the R6 instead of the R5 specifically so I wouldn't have to sell all my ef lenses. The R6 renders my ef lenses beautifully at 20MP, I think they would start to show their flaws if attached to an R5 as they really weren't designed for such high resolution. R5 owners are probably better off going for the rf glass if they can afford it.
I have the R5 and all my lenses are EF lenses. They have performed their best on the R5. They seems to resolve much more than they did on my prior camera the 5d4 so I would say don’t get rid of EF glass. The 50mm/1.2 is really good. I don’t pixel peep but the bokeh and character of this lens is what makes it stand out. More recent lenses like the 35LII perform better. I am able to print poster sized prints off the R5 and have not noticed that any of the lenses lack. I also have film camera like the 1v and EOS 3 and they serve those cameras also. Maybe when RF lenses come down in price it may be time to make the move.
Do you mean the ND filter that I was using specifically to achieve an effect? It wasn't on the lens the entire time. If you actually watch the video I'm sure you'll find that it didn't really impact the comparison. The difference between these lenses is considerable and evident in the example images.
Well Zach you got me... I usually subscribe to channels that I randomly find videos.. if I see more than once video that makes me smile.. I'm subscribed with notifications.... You win bro. So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment - means a lot!
Thanks for watching & for the suggestion! Much appreciated :)
yes combo 50L + 85 mmf1.8 + 135mm f2 + 200 f2.8 (old prime one) all in Ef mount are the same and best film vibe ever.
The lighting was amazing that day. I don't thinknyou could take a bad picture that day
Totally!! Thanks for watching! :)
Wonderful and super artistic, the video made me forget about the equipment.
Ah thanks so much! I really appreciate it & thanks for watching :)
I have the rf 50mm 1.2 an its fantstic!!! Bro your Pics ar awsome!!! Please More from your work
Thanks, man! Really appreciate the comment & thank you for watching! That RF lens is amazing - I really want one! haha...one day... Cheers! :)
Love the RF images 😍
Great photos! I was considering picking up an 85 RF 1.2 but convinced me to try an get more mileage out of my 50 before I spend the $$
Great video! can i ask why you were shooting with an ND filter on?
I use the ND for creative motion blur in the images :) Thanks for watching!
Cool video!! I am planning to buy Canon EOS R6 soon and I'll buy RF 50mm F1.2 for sure. What will be the best lens with Canon EOS R6 for landscape photography, please?? Soon I will be into the Smoky Mountains!
Hi! It really depends on what you enjoy using. I like using my 50 or 35 for landscapes. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching :)
Loved this video quality a lot, for a guy who listens to hip hop music all the time I really enjoyed the audio part of this everything was just high quality and relaxing
I don't have a canon but I wanted to say that your fit is fire! Photographer x Wild West aesthetic
Haha I am from Texas so I guess this is fitting LOL... Thanks so much for watching! :)
Glad you enjoyed it!! Thanks for watching! :)
Would be nice if you have the camera settings written on each of the pictures you displayed. Beautiful model and fantastic results.
Thanks for watching & for the suggestion! :)
Thank you so much. I have a canon 50 mm f/1.2 L I love it. But I can’t wait to get my hands on the new RF version.
Thanks.
Those are straight from the camera, not sharpened. I was probably shooting at 1.8. Hope this helps & thanks for watching!
Really nice video. Plz do tell what presets you used. Very nice film look with the canons.
Thank you! I actually started a series about the presets I am using - check it out! ua-cam.com/video/A6qZEIPAy6w/v-deo.html
@@TheZachMendez I watched it was great! Please do one of those once in a while fun
@@TheZachMendez but this video east the Phil Chester. This was like a Mastin labs film preset but with the R6 looked like real film with that grain.
Ah thank you so much and thanks for watching!
Thank you for watching!! I’m so glad it was helpful 😊
Hey Zach. Did you use Cascade preset here at all. Love both these lenses. Think this is a great video. Time for the 85 1.2 shootout.
I think I was mostly using Phil Chester here, but may have used Cascade for some - those are two of my favorites! Thanks for watching :)
Would you recommend a Sigma 50 mm f1.4 art over the Canon 50 mm f1.2 ?
Don’t know if it’s my Ef50 lens problem or a generic problem, when I shot photos which have messy back scenes (e.g. tress with light), I can see super strong purple in the bokeh
Sometimes you get color fringing in certain situations. Good news is it's a quick, easy fix in Lightroom! Hope this helps & thanks for watching!
Amazing video, love the pictures! I like when the review/comparisons are made by really good photographers.
Thank you so much, Fernando! This comment made my day. Glad you enjoyed the video- thanks for watching!

Ahh thank you for this! Never wanted to click play so fast in my life. Your 50mm EF 1.2 video made me buy it!
I haven't! I don't see why the lens would impact file size drastically... Maybe double check your camera settings?
@@TheZachMendez Ooh, I figured it out. It was only happening with an EF-S lens! 😬

Hey Zach can you please make the video on the filters you’re using for photography. Thanks mate.
Yes!! I talk about them in my recent gear video if you are curious. Thanks for watching! :)
Dude, 50 1.2 is very very sharp, just not at full aperture. Do an A/B comparison with Canon 24-70 mark II L and tell me which is the clear winner.
RF lenses are newer so obviously they're gonna be sharper than EF
Torn between getting the RF 50 1.2 or RF 28-70 f2! Mostly portraits, what would you recommend?
Really depends on how/what you shoot! If you just had one lens, I might recommend the 28-70 for the versatility. Thanks for watching!
Great video and interesting to see the older EF 50 lens held up so well.
I think the subject matter (beautiful models) and your creative interpretation transcends the technical differences between these lenses!
Having said that the new RF 50 is a great kens that in the right hands can take photography to a new level.
Yes - both great! Thanks so much for watching :)
Hi Zach! great comparison so thank you! Did you use presets for your images here?
Thanks
Thanks for watching! Yes I was probably using the Phil Chester PS presets here. 😊
Zach Mendez awesome thanks, thought I recognised them! Do you work from the Adobe Standard profile?
To shoot at F1.2 during daylight, what ND filter stop did you use?
Do you have a tutorial/can you do a tutorial on how you do your film grain?
Yes!! I saw your other comment so looks like you found it haha...thanks so much for watching! :)
Really great assesment! How do you think the 1.4 compares to the 1.2?
I haven't spent much time with the 1.4, but I do have a video coming up comparing the RF 1.8 with the EF 1.2 - stay tuned :)
I'm wondering how well the sharpness deficit can be remedied with careful sharpening in post.
Thanks. Fuji shooter contemplating defecting to Canon. I love the look of the EF.
It's so good!! Thanks for watching :)
I enjoyed your content! I'm wondering why your using a ND filter on the RF but not the EF lens.
There's no particular reason. I just only have one ND filter so it had to go on one lens or the other lol. Thanks for watching!! :)
Lens is one thing but having so lovely models also helpful
My EF 1.2 has very poor front focus issues on my canon r5. Is this fixable?
Since day one my EF has stunned me in its capabilities. Kinda like golf, who can get better results? Tiger woods with a set of $200 clubs or you with a set of $10,000 clubs. Look what Ansel Adams was using, a box with a drape attachment.
The RD images have a medium format vibe. I’m loving the quality.
You said it perfectly! I felt the same way after seeing the images on my computer. It's really quite a special look. Thanks for watching :)
Wish you drop sample files to check the quality
Can you company Canon EF 50 1.2 and Canon RF 50 1.8?
Love the vid and I do prefer the EF and its "imperfections". That said and now with time past from this vid, how do you think the EF would hold up to the R5 sensor? Have you used this lens on the R5? I ask because my favorite lens of all time is my V4 35mm cron. I have had it since 89 on an M6 (film) but unfortunately it is not up to the M10R sensor challenge for me anyway. Looking to get in to an R5 and the EF 50L. Obviously rent is the way but just curious your thoughts if you think it could hang or fall apart at that res. Cheers
I will be able to test it out on the R5 very soon! I'll put that on my list of videos to make.
LOL I know... these lenses are no joke. I am slowly getting into them but it's not easy for the wallet! Thanks for watching.
I got the canon 50MM F1.2L lens and I have it since 3 years now and you can get SHARP photos with the canon EF 50MM F1.2L if you know how to use it and if you understand photography and LIGHT
Yep, great!

The reflecting light setup is manipulated to provide an obvious advantage to the rf lens.
Oh wow do tell?
Thanks for the excellent video and lovely photos 😍
Subscribed!

People always knew EF focusing system have some flaw(even some of my collegues spent tons of money to alight right focus point with camera repair shop with these prime L mount lenses) unlike their competitors like 'Nikon' but they never fixing it and finally with RF system this 'soft' lenses get a new light :) I myself own EF version but with a size, weight, price and most importanly less character than EF version make me keep my old one instead of RF version.

Did you put the EF on the R6? Maybe that’s why the Rf was really sharp because it was on the R6 which is sharper then the R
Stunning motion blur images, beautiful!

Hey, I saw you have used a nd filter for your pictures. I thought that ND Filters would be only used for video? Could you make a video of how and why you use nd filters for pictures. Thank you 🙌🏼

Haha... I've been there! Thanks so much for watching! :)
Thanks so much for watching! Really interesting point! Thanks so much for sharing :)
What? They’re just glass, wouldn’t matter what camera you used the lens on, no flaws would surface.
I Have both R and R5, my ef lenses perform well on both cameras.
How are you doing a lens comparison with a filter in front of your lens? 🤔
Do you mean the ND filter that I was using specifically to achieve an effect? It wasn't on the lens the entire time. If you actually watch the video I'm sure you'll find that it didn't really impact the comparison. The difference between these lenses is considerable and evident in the example images.
