LIVING WITH THE SEA WOLF - Avel Dro in the Netherlands - part 2

  • The second half of a week-long raid in Dutch waters of 12 small boats and 17 participants - mainly French, sailing around the old ports of the former Zuiderzee. The video concentrates on our experience on board Avel Dro, exploring these fascinating waters for the first time, as well as descriptions of the places we visit. My pronunciation of the place names may be somewhat suspect. Apologies to Dutch viewers!
    The "Waterwolf" (phonetically something like "vatervolf") is what the Dutch call the waters that constantly threaten to inundate their country. Here I have used "sea wolf" instead. In Dutch that would be "Zeewolf".

    AVEL DRO
    Do you want a boat like mine?
    Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. I bought her in France in 2003 to import her into the UK, and more recently returned her to France again before the present Brexit trade restrictions were imposed.* The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century - hence her single boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. The name Avel Dro is Breton, and basically means a whirlwind.
    Length 4.44 m
    Sail area 12.2 m²
    Beam 1.70 m
    Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
    Design category C3

    *Since January 2021, due to Brexit, Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) residents who buy a boat in France or elsewhere in the EU, with the intention of importing it into the UK, need to pay VAT and other duties on the import.

    Roger, that was outstanding. Thank you for taking us with you & Mary on what seems to be extended yearly adventures in addition to your more local cruises. Maybe it's the architects' eye but your camera seems to capture some haunting images; last year's cruise of the lagoons of Venice for example still continue to mesmerise. Take care & thanks again

      Sorry to hear about the capsize! Rule number one, in my experience, is to reef early. Second is to keep the mainsheet in your hand and not cleated down when the wind is strong so you can spill the wind very quickly and avoid a capsize.

      David, I'm just finishing mine - perhaps I'll keep it tied to the trailer to prevent capsizing (!?) What happened? Was it during a gybe?

    • @davidladd6266
      @davidladd6266 2 роки тому +2

      @@damoog5985 honestly, it happened so fast i’m not 100% sure what happened. I was on a broad reach with 8knt winds and 14knt gusts (full sail). I was sitting on the port aft side seat and decided to gybe around to stbd. In a spit second after i moved the tiller the boat was on its port side and the boom was against me. I just rolled backwards out of the boat and it continued to roll over on its port side.

      It used to be salt water, an inner sea, in fact the North Sea. Until they built that dam.
      Do check Dutch history. One of the amazing facts is, that the cities grew so unbelievably rich (right, thank you, colonies and trade) that they had more power than the royals. Do you know any country where there was NOT a king or some nobles having the last say in, well, everything? The only other example I know, is the USA. No king! People's power, it's democracy. Out dated districts system, unfair as hell, the richest gets president, but admit it, they have democracy and NOT an extremely extremely rich royal family. Great!

    Others must have suggested this but I do not have enough patience to comb through all the comments in your many episodes to find out.. Via the ferry from France to Rosslare or Cork (Ringaskiddy) consider an escapade to the bays and islands of west County Cork. Possibly less effort than going to the Netherlands but fewer charming settlements. The local design in Lemmer deserved your attention: the Lemmer Ark.

    Beautiful beyond belief. There is nothing "humble" about those glorious buildings, but they're not ostentatious, so maybe that's what you meant. Vernacular architecture at its finest. I'm impressed by your gimbal mount on the Go Pro, it really allows Avel Dro's motion to come alive on the screen. But it looks like you're using regular flexible arm mounts? I'm confused. • @johannes.f.r.
      @johannes.f.r. 2 роки тому

      No, there are no tides. There never was much anyway, the average difference was around 30 centimeters and was only caused by the tide on the North Sea and the water flowing in and out of the Zuiderzee. But there could be very severe differences during storms and spring tide of up to 3 meters, which is why the dike was built. Now the main obstacle is the wind, which can catch people out easily.
