AVEL DRO
Do you want a boat like mine?
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. I bought her in France in 2003 to import her into the UK, and more recently returned her to France again before the present Brexit trade restrictions were imposed.* The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century - hence her single boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. The name Avel Dro is Breton, and basically means a whirlwind.
Length 4.44 m
Sail area 12.2 m²
Beam 1.70 m
Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
Design category C3

Similar dinghies can often be found for sale on the website of the French magazine Le Chasse-Marée:

Or try Le Bon Coin, (where you can buy anything in France):

*Since January 2021, due to Brexit, Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) residents who buy a boat in France or elsewhere in the EU, with the intention of importing it into the UK, must pay VAT and other duties on the import.
You are doing an excellent job at what you are doing, Roger. In your boating skills, your photography/video skills, and your narration, you are hitting the mark. We love it.
Brings back memories from almost 50 years ago when I spent a night at anchor there on a 12 metre tide. The change in scenery as the tide fell was stunning. Small rocks just visible at HW became mountains at LW. Spent the next night in Granville where they had very recently installed the marina.
Love your contextual memories on this. Thanks very much.
”I’m quite capable of not concentrating” 😄👍👍👍
Your videos should be prescribed for anyone with high blood pressure 😁. Ahhhh, and breathe. Thanks Roger.
Peace x
Mudeford, Dorset.
Thanks for sharing Roger very beautiful part of the world. Love Yvonne’s boat she’s a beauty.Hope to see more of yourself and Yvonne together you make a great couple.
When I graduated from ash oars to spruce it was like the difference between using a dull, rusty axe, and a surgeon's scalpel.
Brilliant Roger, again. Really cool. I love seeing you move the sheet block from side to side, much more than hearing people complain that it’s inefficient.
Yes, but there’s no denying that there’s sometimes a problem at the hat/sail interface! 😂
It is a timing, muscle memory, confidence (need all those things) "art". I have had this rig for a year now and "feeling" where the boat is in the tack, the sail crossing over behind you, is quite the experience. At times I feel as though I'm one with the boat - which is where we should be no? In high winds it is not hard to worry about my fingers, making darn sure they are not gettng in the sheet block assm! Speaking of which, I wonder what blackened Roger's index finger? Likely in my future???
Darn !!! now I have to make another spot on my bucket list of sailing destinations. That sunset scene with your beached boats and rocky backdrop, worthy of a poster. Unforgettable.
that was a sunrise!!!
Thanks Roger, really cool. Thanks largely to you we've purchased an old 16ft trailer sailor.
LOVE this one! The best yet, says an 80’s sailor in Georgia USA! More such, Please! BTW, what is Yvonne’s Swiss boat?
That was a fun trip thankyou Mr Barnes, good to know your out an about .
Beautiful film Roger. Thank you so much for all the effort that you put in to making them. Happy sailing.
Thank you for this video totally imbued with peace, calm and tranquility. Early morning on that beach looked a wonderful place to be.
I am amazed at how intimate one can be with weather, wind and tides. Your comfort manipulating your dinghy through the wind and tides demonstrates how you have studied and learned them, something people of sailing do. There is so much to know and practice with every time out. People of the car just do not do. Kentucky
another great video. You really know how to promote dinghy sailing. Can't wait for summer to arrive, here in Australia. So many places to go visit. Cheers
Beautiful adventure Roger nice area to spend the night I love your videos thank you for sharing
So glad 😀 I found your U-Tube channel Mate ! Just bought a Fiberglass Monty 17’. At near 78 I’ve dreamed of owning my own boat. Now I’m making repairs n getting her ready.
I use to sail lots back in the 1970’s n 80’s but on n in other folks boats n dinghies ..
Now back to your 8th month vintage vid here. That’s one long row your boat. I use to be tough like you Mate. Cheers 🥂 Nick
Just an amazing feel good video. I am busy sorting my boat at the moment and very soon I will have the same adventures to cleans the soul.
Still photography necessary! Fantastic landscapes. Wow. Thank you for a great lunch break away from the office.
Rien de mieux qu'un de vos merveilleux vidéos le matin! 🙂
Joyeuse vie de percepteur mon très cher Barnes à vous. Si vous saviez comme tout ça c’est joyeux pour nous ?
Bien à vous et bonne continuation.
It's not celebrating or anything but I think I will have a beer as well.
Great video as always.
🍻🇨🇦👨🏭
Perhaps the BEST!
Thank you for making these video logs of your voyages. My boat is launching in two weeks, and my head is swimming with possibilities and schemes of future adventures. Cheers!
Great film, watching in in my tent while at a Regatta! Life is about the simple things...
Thanks ive just bought a Drascombe Dabber and learning the nuances of a lugsail, hope to copy some of your cruising adventures in the spring
Very nice and relaxing trip with your friend. Thank you.
Enjoyable to watch. The look on Yvonne's face at 10.40 is quite amusing....'Oh mon dieu, ces anglais, wert does 'ee sink ' ee is eating'.
Always nice to see your videos Roger. Thanks for sharing your wonderful experiences. Fair winds and following seas to you always.
Tides and currents with no wind brings out your rowing skills! Thank you for showing us the chart!!
⛵️🇺🇸
I really appreciate your videos. You transform simplicity in something majestic.
Lovely video, very skillful sailing Roger. I remember visiting in the early 90's with my brother in law with his Holman 26. We had to anchor in the main channel to stay afloat though as the Holman was a long keeler
New to the channel Roger & not only am I enjoying it but finding it a breath of fresh air. It hadn't occurred to me that, how shall I put it, interesting, educated people made youtube videos too!
Interesting as ever, though I notice we have different definitions of crowds. We live in a quiet country lane on the edge of a small village, though fortunate to have a shop, butcher and pub. Even by our standards the Grand Isle scarcely seemed crowded, odd people here and there isn’t what we would call crowds. Glad there was a boat with a motor to get you to the shop, your purity of vision re sailing seems to make it hard at times, and I think I recall you needing to be rescued on occasion .
Wonderful Roger . A place I must visit. Thanks for providing such a lovely diversion from the daily round. One of your best.
Last weekend I was sailing with the Canadian boat maker that raced with you. If you ever can get to the Great Lakes region of Canada there is always a boat to borrow.
Magic Roger. Perfect for a bleak and blustery afternoon sitting in front of the fire. Greetings from east coast Australia.
Wonderful video! I have just watched it for the third time, trying to forget my January blues.
Awesome. So envious. Where I sail, I have no small boat sailing enthusiasts/companions.
What a great video! I never knew one could live and explore like this. Simply amazing. Can't wait to have a look through the older videos!
It’s still something of a secret, dinghy cruising.
Thank you rodger very nice Tim
Well done Roger, Here there is no wind on the Golfe du Morbihan. Last day. We are recovering our boats after 3pm today. We have had a lovely week. I'll edit a video...
Lovely! Your adventures make me green with envy! Thanks Rog!
Nice little trip, thank you for bringing us along too
Pure pleasure to watch as always! Your videos always leave me wanting more.
Thank you Roger for another wonderful video. Greetings from the Mojave desert of Southern California.
Much enjoyed, thanks for sharing Mr Barnes 👍
I need to think 🤔 about learning to scull a boat. I watch with great interest your vid teaching the German fellow to scull your dinghy.. cheers 🥂 Nick
B.T.W. How long (approximately) is that sculling ore ? Very curious 🧐??!! Nick !
Lovely to watch again roger thankyou best wishes robert.
Sublime music and singing :)
Wonderful video, thank you.
Roger, that was really nice and thanks for giving us the distance sailed.
What a wonderful trip!! Beautiful scenery and good company!! Ones of my favorite videos! You sure lead an awesome life. Thanks!!
Thanks so much!
Lovely. Just lovely.
Alluring, as usual. Thanks for sharing Mr B.
I see what you did!😂
I don't know that anyone else could possibly make me want to go sailing on dark drizzly day, but you might have convinced me!
Not to jinx it but I noticed your little channel is nearly at 30k subscribers. Fingers crossed!
I really enjoy your stories, Roger. And your music.
Beautifol work 👍
Merci pour ce grand bol d'air iodé 😀 et ces magnifiques images 🎥
Brilliant video. I always look up the places you visit on Google maps! From across the channel at Poole, Dorset.
Chausey, one of the most beautiful and unknown places in the channel. Only with good weather.
Always love your trips. Thanks for the words.
Thanks for watching!
Well, having seen you brave no wind and a spring tide, in two weeks, I might just have to go north from St Malo instead of back up La Rance. Totally beautiful place! Once again, thanks for the inspiration.
Hi Roger, thanks for taking us along, what a super relaxing video, great scenery, and a nice spot to anchor in the little bay. I hope everything is going well whith you,and I look forward to your next video, stay safe mate, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.
Lovely. Your clips do give me hope and peace.
Wonderful. We took our Wayfarer there just a month after you. The weather was stunning, the tides neaping and the crowds gone!
Sadly we were only able to spend one night there but it’s on our ‘revisit’ list - like so many other places we went to!
What an amazing and beautiful cruising ground. Given the huge tidal range, I'm surprised the tidal currents are not more obviously flowing fast around all those rocks you sail close by.
They were in the distance. But we kept clear of those areas.
c'est toujours très agréable de voir vos vidéos a bord de votre petit bateau de bois et de voile..et merci bien=)
Beautiful!
Thank you!
@@RogerRoving Have you been to Isle de Batz?
Very relaxing with my mug of tea 👍⛵
Another great adventure and vid ! TY Roger.
Beautiful and relatively untouched scenery! But the sailing conditions are really tricky and can change rapidly. We sailed to Chausey with calm sunny weather in the morning and got hit by an unannounced 8 bft thunderstorm in the afternoon... the lack of shelter left us no choice but to flee! Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your next explorations in the area, perhaps les Ecrehous? 😎
Another great video Roger! Your video editing skills may one day equal your sailing ones!
You continue to inspire, Roger.
Because of you (your films), I bought a Drascombe Lugger, rigged it with a tent and have been cruising South Puget Sound in Washington(US).
The problem is that, for the most part, Puget Sound doesn’t enjoy the comfortable sandy shores to dry-out on (very rocky shores, with mud and sand further out).
So, I anchor out with my tent up.
BUT, I wondered if you might think I was “asking for it”, anchored in a small dinghy with a tent???
I never gave such thing a second thought with my prior blue water boat.
What do you think???
And please keep showing the rest of us how to cruise small boats in style.
Greg
Love it, inspiring as always. Thanks for sharing.
Really enjoyed your voyage Roger.
A new Roger vid day..Fantastic. and a very good one too thanks Roger 🙂👍
got yourself another sub with this one!
Very peaceful! Lovely music! Been using your finger for target practice? 😁
I was guessing that came from docking before hanging the fenders.
Amazing voyage...amazing footage....
Wow Roger. Grosse aventure. Felicitations a toi et Yvonne 😀
Lovely! - Next time venture North and explore Les Ecrehous!
Always a pleasure, this the second time I've watched this one, Thanks! I was wondering what boat Yvonne is sailing, Apologies if you mentioned it and I missed it.
It’s a unique boat called Bigfoot, made by a boatbuilding student here in Douarnenez.
Thanks, Whist it doesn't have quite the same competent stout look of the Illur, it's also a very handsome boat.@@RogerRoving
Look like a great weekend
Another great video! Those rocks are beautiful but scary :-).
(Dare I suggest, though, that it might soon be time for a new theme tune?)
I agree with others who admire Yvonne's beautiful boat...
Agree on the theme music. There's lots of free music online for just mentioning the artist in the description. Really a win-win because you get to help a musician and make your videos more interesting.
I'm still really liking this tune.
wonderful - just what i needed thank you Roger. You are a great story teller
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
A lovely relaxing video, I enjoyed it very much .
Are you the Roger in 'Swallows and Amazons' ?. 🤔. I have spent hours watching your beautifully narrated adventures while feeling ill from that pestilence that you speak of. The Michael Storer interview was interesting. I worked with that amazing team at Duck Flat for a while, Come away from there with an ian oughtred fulmar that grew in my garage. I look forward to new content. Quality channel Roger. Thank you for your work. 🤠👍
So cool Thanks for feeding the dream!
At high tide you sail over the top of the rocks, yes that's possible in such a shallow draft sailboat. Here in Australia are the narrows in Qld. And they drie out ,I'm 1.6 MTR draft and push mud sometimes. Exiting sailing it all is. Have fun mate.
Lovely video Roger, thanks again for sharing. Hows the tent holding up?
Another lovely video, looking forward to the next one
Roger, otro muy buen video, felicitaciones. Como me gustaría ver tu barco con una velita de proa.... Abrazo
Thanks Roger loved it, cheers Paul
Always great.
That looked like a wonderful trip!
I am jealous. The weather here in New Jersey, USA, has been far too windy for my GP14. I have not had her out in two years, but have been getting out with my much heavier SeaSprite 23. As nice as she is, I miss sailing my dinghy.
Lovely footage of the sea and the light and the water. It looked sometimes like an end of the century painting by the danish painter P.S Kröyer.
I'm going to have to google Kröyer
