Hey guys , this is my dad (the one on piano and playing the flute) Rob Woodward. And my nan the older lady on piano Hilda Woodward. She is no longer with us ATM , the last words out of her mouth before she died was mouldy old dough. It reminds me of her and I miss her dearly it's so nice to see the lovely comments on here. It would have made my nan so proud xxx
Lovely leah xx
Truly gifted family you have 😎
I have actually asked for this piece of music to be played at my funeral as it basically represents what I felt life was. Respect to you and your family. God bless.
fantasticcccccccc greats on your dad
At the moment? she coming back?
That’s my uncle Steve on bass guitar, I still have the original single. He’s no longer with us, but I love watching this from time to time to remember him.
I'm so very sorry for your loss Andrew, we knew Steve & Wendy, we were neighbours in Blackburn. Steve introduced me to the Rovers and we went to games together! A nicer man you would never meet, his passing way too soon so very sad.
I remember listening to this in the 70s my dad's album.
@@davidbrookbank2510 thank you for your kind words, David! I only just saw your comment but it means a lot, especially as it was Steve’s birthday yesterday. Wishing you well.
Every banger race fan is grinning when this classic comes on 👍
I used to hear this on Sunday's when I'd walk up to Foxhall Stadium with my brother & mum for Stock Car and banger racing. I miss those days of a much more peaceful time.
Yep even when I used to race at arena essex ❤
Destruction Derby!
However bad your day has been you can’t stop smiling when you listen to this great song
Their 1976 offering "Goodbye" a similar sounding record to this is imo just as good.
unlesssssssssss.......... you were locked in a .......... with this playing over and .........
Oh yes! I remember it when it hit the charts ... great old days those ...
It's an instrumental, NOT a song.
That drummer just gives me bad vibes.....about young girls in the 70s...creepy as F
You can’t help but smile at the lady playing the piano having the time of her life. Brilliant
Isn't that the famous Mrs Mills, who had a piano named after her in Abbey Road?

Absolutely one of the greatest novelty songs of all time. The early 70s were awesome.
On the contrary, it was an era of peadophiles, drunken husbands and subservience.
Sorry, I wouldn't know as I was born at the start of that decade and so too young to understand or remember!
The seventies were the best
\Trust me, the 80's were much better!
@@mikeandhev If only that were true.
One of the daftest records ever made but do u know what? It knocks spots off miserable Sam Smith and Adele and also Lewis capaldi!
Always Reminds of the school youth club back in early 70 with all the girls in my class dancing and shouting moldy old dough happy days and memories from a better time very sadly gone 👍❤️
Wonderful days the 1970's so many great songs like Mouldy !

We’re all here to share our memories and, yours mean a great deal to you! Happy days!

I’m now 65 & have loved this tune for years since I first heard it played ❤️🎼🎹
My grandad has just gone through the curtain at the crematorium to this. His last lap. what a legend of a man made everyone smile as the coffin went through. Not a week he missed at bangers.
“May the stars carry your sadness away,
May the flowers fill your heart with beauty,
May hope forever wipe away your tears,
And, above all, may silence make you strong.”
What a lovely thing to post, I'm sure he thought the world of you too....
I was thinking about going out to this.
I drove at Arlington, Wimbledon, Aldershot. (595 with the Arlington Angels). I'm 73 now; I think I might ask for the same at my funeral!
Respect for your granda ❤
Nothing beats lining up on that start line with 40 plus bangers with this playing in the back ground 🚗🚗
Never ever be able to beat it no matter how hard it is
Couldn’t agree more
Yep! If ya know ya know. Did it for 8 years at foxhall and Mildenhall never had the balls to race Arena though. Lol!
This plus the sound of 40+ V6 Granada's, superb
P5 Rovers and Ford Consuls
This brings back memories of my mum and dad, and my middle sister, watching top of the pops back in the day. Sadly all gone, I’m next, got the dreaded C, hope to see them
Are you still with us, this side of Heaven? Perhaps you missed the bus? Well not to worry - there will be another before long, but don’t forget to press the bell - who knows where you will finish up! It is a bit late as I have only seen your message, but if you have taken the bus I hope you have arrived safely, without, any detours, and met up with people from the old gang. This great song will be one that I will take with me., as a memento of great times spent in BAOR Germany. Camp 7 Dortmund.🌈 x
All the 50/60/and 70s music will live with us forever bless them all 🍷

I was the DJ on Radio Sky Blue at Coventry City FC in the Seventies, and had these guys on with their No:1 Hit in the warm-up. What a lovely bunch, and they had the whole ground rocking as the teams came on the pitch. We scored a few that day, and the chant was Mouldy Old Dough to celebrate every goal! Great Days!
“We scored a few”....was really that long ago, sadly
PUSB!!
Knew there'd be a dodgy DJ prowling the comments somewhere.
My dad died yesterday, I am sure this was his favourite song, thanks for the good times and memories.
A very, very good morning, i'm a german and if not every word i write will be right, then excuse me. Today, after breakfast, my wife asked me, if I know what means: cats kneading dough. And so I remembered this song and searched on UA-cam. I loved this song in 1971 when I was 13 years by age. And I love this song now, 49 years later. It would be so great, when there where such musicians today. And not only mainstream. Have a nice day and lieutenant pigeon in your ears.😉😉😉
Love this ,God Bless this wee woman , brings me many memories of my childhood
Reminds me of being kids at home with mum and dad...fred the pigeon...love this song always makes me smile...😍

I just can't stop my foot tapping along worth the beat , amazing song even after all these years
They went to my old school, Caludon Castle in Coventry, They were invited to give a talk at morning assembly. Couldn`t believe that someone who`d been on Top of the Pops...with a NUMBER ONE HIT no less, was just standing in front of me at school. I was eleven years old ....and impressed.
Its amazing that such a simple collection of chords and keys can make such a great sound. My dad had this single way back and I loved it and still do.Brilliance through simplicity musically.
It surely is brilliant. I just can't work out how this tune just simply *works* (and believe me, I've tried) It just does!

For me, the best thing about this perfect example of people having fun is the smile on Hilda Woodward's face. Being on TOTP playing the joanna in her son's band... fucking brilliant!
The "studio" version was recorded in her front room!
I heard an interview where the band said on European tours the kids in the audience, and the others treated her like a superstar.

This song just makes me smile and feel happy. It reminds me of the Disco days of the 60,s and 70's. I just Love it
A very inaccurate comment there; unfortunately Disco emerged in the late 70’s . Not heard off in the 1960’s ; only the Mersey beat - Beatlemania !!!, soul music of the early seventies gave rise to the Disco Beat -1976 -
Paul wilson si pson: Littlt boy you don't know what the hell you are talking about. I started my mobile disco in 1969 and by 1973 was earning more from that than from my main job .If you don't know your subject, and you obviously know nothong wnhatsoever about it, then just keep that gash inyour face shut.
@@simposayerman agreed .
No disco in the 60s.
Glam early 70s , disco came later in that wonderful decade
It certainly does we had the priviledge of growing up with such amazing sounds
When I heard this I wanted to play piano! I can play by ear and read music but NOT TOGETHER! I hear a tune and can play it perfectly - so my parents bought me an old upright piano and I had lessons for a while. I remember playing this after hearing it ONCE and mum was amazed!!! Such happy memories of an era that was non violent, so little crime and we could play in the street SAFELY with so few cars around or 'bad people' Thank you Hilda and the band for this song!
I don't remember much about my grandad as I was only little when he died...(R.I.P).however I do remember sitting on his knee at the piano while he taught me how to play the basic notes to this classic...memories aside....never get sick of listening to this.
All the beautiful girls dancing and not a tattoo or tracksuit in sight. Please take me back to then.

I guess we are lucky that this performance still survives and thanks for posting. It would have been great to see LP's debut on Top Of the Pops again which must have been wiped by the BBC. I can still remember when watching the original transmission my utter bemusement at the record, but it's gone on to become a legend and I love it!
I remember the Mum on piano was dressed as a school teacher in a black mortar board and gown.
Well, I really love Lieutenant Pigeon. They make me cry. The other day I was listening to Mouldy Old Dough when my son came in, and I was crying. He said, 'Dad, why are you crying?' I said, it's the song I'm listening to that's making me cry. So he replied, 'Stop LISTENING to the song, then!'. I said, just because I'm crying, it's not a bad thing. You can still cry and be happy.

I'm not. Born in 1970, I was just a toddler in the pushchair at the time and the first time I heard of it was on Midlands Today talking about a blue plaque outside the house where the song was recorded. The programme Guru Larry (Apaches film PIF) played an excerpt of the song, which I didn't know at that point!
This was one of my father in laws all time favourite songs, he used to get me to put it on you tube for him all the time before he died. I always smile when I hear this and think of him x
Was 12 years old at the time and always remember this being played at the Silver Blades Ice Rink at Sheffield, my school Don Valley High from Doncaster used to arrange coach trips on a Friday night. Great days, great music
45 years old and still sounding fab! Holy shit where have all those years gone?
I remember seeing this on Top of the Pops way back in 1972 ! I also remember that plastic pigeon, the tin whistle intro and the use of two pianos. A UK #1 in September that year. They had follow up later that same year with Desperate Dan which peaked at # 17 and then Lt Pigeon flew off into obscurity never to be heard again:
They're still going!
They ended up doing night club gigs. I saw them at Salford rugby club during late eighties and they brought the house down absolutely brilliant. Don't know what happened after that.
October 1972 actually
Wish to god I could go back to those days, life seemed so much easier to deal with compared to present times !
I think that's your nostalgia speaking. 70s Britain looked sh*te. So bleak and depressing, everyone seemed poor and on strike. Weren't there power cuts too? Britain was on its arse back then and on the brink of ruin
I was only a child back then. Yes Britain was on its backside but everybody was more friendlier and there was not so much rubbish around like we have today. You had to live it to appreciate it. By the way I am now 60 and was born in 1963. I wish we could go back to those times as well.
@@TonyWeaving again I can’t help but think you miss your youth rather than the 70s in general. Hardships bring people together but you also get crime and misery. And I suppose you appreciated things more because you had less. But would you really want to go back to a time of having crap food, having to save up for a chocolate bar, no car or a crappy British car that didn’t work, unsafe jobs, no foreign holidays, cold house, brown and avocado colours everywhere! Ugh
Absolutely love this song always makes me smile
This is such a cool & wacky little tune. It's the kind of song you hear once and it sticks in your head the whole day. It's sad that this song failed to even chart here in the U.S. after achieving such great success elsewhere. Just goes to show how out of step we can be here in the U.S. at times. And it's not as if novelty songs weren't charting in the U.S. in 1972 either. Both Chuck Berry's "My Ding-A-Ling" and Hot Butter's "Popcorn" were both huge hits here that year. If we could sing along with a man playing with his ding-a-ling, we certainly could've enjoyed some mouldy old dough.
It's "Bloody Brilliant" Colonel Bogey, eat "ya" heat out!!!
Interesting Lieutenant Pigeon are from Coventry and Chuck Berry recorded his live version of My Ding-A -ling at the Locarno ballroom in Coventry when he played there.
Surely one of the best one-hit wonders ever
Not a one-hit wonder as Desperate Dan reached No.14
