I'm not. Born in 1970, I was just a toddler in the pushchair at the time and the first time I heard of it was on Midlands Today talking about a blue plaque outside the house where the song was recorded. The programme Guru Larry (Apaches film PIF) played an excerpt of the song, which I didn't know at that point!
For me, the best thing about this perfect example of people having fun is the smile on Hilda Woodward's face. Being on TOTP playing the joanna in her son's band... fucking brilliant!
This is such a cool & wacky little tune. It's the kind of song you hear once and it sticks in your head the whole day. It's sad that this song failed to even chart here in the U.S. after achieving such great success elsewhere. Just goes to show how out of step we can be here in the U.S. at times. And it's not as if novelty songs weren't charting in the U.S. in 1972 either. Both Chuck Berry's "My Ding-A-Ling" and Hot Butter's "Popcorn" were both huge hits here that year. If we could sing along with a man playing with his ding-a-ling, we certainly could've enjoyed some mouldy old dough.
Interesting Lieutenant Pigeon are from Coventry and Chuck Berry recorded his live version of My Ding-A -ling at the Locarno ballroom in Coventry when he played there.
When I heard this I wanted to play piano! I can play by ear and read music but NOT TOGETHER! I hear a tune and can play it perfectly - so my parents bought me an old upright piano and I had lessons for a while. I remember playing this after hearing it ONCE and mum was amazed!!! Such happy memories of an era that was non violent, so little crime and we could play in the street SAFELY with so few cars around or 'bad people' Thank you Hilda and the band for this song!
Make Up Vixen. I have just watched the 50 years ago video of Mouldy Old Dough and found it very interesting to watch. All the problems they had trying to get that record out in the first place. I am one of those who regularly watch the original video because I really love the track. I just thought I would let you know that. A brilliant novelty track. I am sorry to hear your gran passed away. She was a damn good pianist. I am now 70 but love that track. PC. 17. 09. 2022. Take care.
This was one of my father in laws all time favourite songs, he used to get me to put it on you tube for him all the time before he died. I always smile when I hear this and think of him x
This track was played on the public address system at Oldham Athletic home games in 1972-73, and for many years afterwards. Utterly naff, yet utterly unforgettable, if you see what I mean. There's a Rod Stewart lookalike wannabee in the audience, who appears in numerous other TOTP shows from this era, respect to you, bro!
@Bad Lieutenant Yes, I'm a Bolan fan! Oldham were in the old Div 3 in 1972-73, and we won the divisional championship in 73-74. I no longer go to matches, but I believe 'Mouldy Old Dough' is still played before the kick-off at home games.
@Bad Lieutenant Same as you, I gave up on football many years ago for similar reasons. Bolton were not the most entertaining team ever to win Div 3, but they were a very strong and well organized side under Jimmy Armfield in 72-73. I was at Boundary Park on 6 January 1973 in a crowd of almost 20,000 when we beat the Wanderers 2-0, and by the end of the month we were top of the division, two points ahead of Bournemouth and three points clear of Bolton. Sadly the pressure got to us, and we began to struggle, but we were still in with a mathematical chance of promotion in the final game of the season, but had to settle for fourth place after a 1-1 draw at Blackburn.
Was 12 years old at the time and always remember this being played at the Silver Blades Ice Rink at Sheffield, my school Don Valley High from Doncaster used to arrange coach trips on a Friday night. Great days, great music
Lived this tune all my life, had it played at my Wedding evening do when the food came out. It will also be played at my Funeral as my carcass is brought in!
cool song of its day ! i remember playing this loud as i could when family out, on steario ,as a boy and blowing up amplifier ! never owed up to that one !!
Just discovered this song today after reading an article about odd uk #1s. Loving the song and loving the comments about the song, oldschool pop and Oldham Athletic!
I was and still am a massive roy wood fan and loved wizzards totp appearances but i loved the pigeons with this track ultra commercial but a right gem of a track.
A very inaccurate comment there; unfortunately Disco emerged in the late 70’s . Not heard off in the 1960’s ; only the Mersey beat - Beatlemania !!!, soul music of the early seventies gave rise to the Disco Beat -1976 -
Paul wilson si pson: Littlt boy you don't know what the hell you are talking about. I started my mobile disco in 1969 and by 1973 was earning more from that than from my main job .If you don't know your subject, and you obviously know nothong wnhatsoever about it, then just keep that gash inyour face shut.
It's crap . ... It has nostalgic value but play this to kids today and they would think your a clueless boomer idiot .. they would probably have a point .
As a child me, Mum and dad loved this. Later I would deny all knowledge of this "love". However, it was number one and they sold bucket loads! I've never forgotten the tune - some may mock it, but it's not easy to write an ear-worm.
A true great tune and that flute playing was brilliant gave the song a real edge and that last bit the hairs go up on the back of your neck wonder where the name of the music Mouldy Old dough come from.
@bofursgun anyone who types the sentence "only coz you wuz young...truth" is a farce. You were not alive in the 70's...and if you were, shame on you for adopting such illiterate and utterly tasteless ways of communicating your thoughts.

The "studio" version was recorded in her front room!
I heard an interview where the band said on European tours the kids in the audience, and the others treated her like a superstar.
It's "Bloody Brilliant" Colonel Bogey, eat "ya" heat out!!!
Interesting Lieutenant Pigeon are from Coventry and Chuck Berry recorded his live version of My Ding-A -ling at the Locarno ballroom in Coventry when he played there.
This is a fantastic record love it so much bring back records like this
AAAHHH!! THEM DAY'S!!!
GREAT STUFF!!!
LOVED THE SIXTIES & SEVENTIES!!!
WAS GLAD TO BE PART OF IT INDEED!!
THANKS FOR THE POSTING.
All those cute young Sheilas are grandmas now!
Great grandmas probably 😊
Love it!
Played it all the way from Leicester to Oxford. I am now officially classed as 'clinically certified happy!'
Haha
Awesome! I remember this from the 'Pocorn' album when I was like 6 years old. I always thought he said 'Mouldy Old Down'! Instead of dough 😂
i have been searching for this for years !! never knew the name , but grew up on the tune !!! wooooooop so happy !!
Oldham Athletic AFC!
This is played at every home game. Can't remember a time when this wasn't played at Boundary Park.
It's been played for years at boundary Park.. I've only to hear the opening bit and I'm immediately transported back to sheepfoot lane
keep the faith darby will keep us safe
I Oldham fan since I as 5 back in 1970, they play this every game, from when the song first released till present day, awesome
Legendary banger racing tune👍 (possibly with a revving Granada V6 too)
Make Up Vixen.
Still played on matchdays at BP. Whenever I hear this it just takes me to Latics on a Saturday afternoon!
KTF
@Bad Lieutenant
Yes, I'm a Bolan fan! Oldham were in the old Div 3 in 1972-73, and we won the divisional championship in 73-74. I no longer go to matches, but I believe 'Mouldy Old Dough' is still played before the kick-off at home games.
@Bad Lieutenant
Same as you, I gave up on football many years ago for similar reasons.
I've always loved this brilliant piece of music.
Thanks to everyone concerned.
I remember in the early 1970s when this was played at Boundary Park shortly before Oldham Athletic ran on to the pitch.

Field Marshall..funny
Childhood memories....the school disco....those were the days.
I feel.instantly lifted when i hear this and start dancing arouns
great blast from the past - none of your manufactured tripe we have to suffer these days.
This song just makes me smile and feel happy. It reminds me of the Disco days of the 60,s and 70's. I just Love it
A very inaccurate comment there; unfortunately Disco emerged in the late 70’s .
@@simposayerman agreed .
No disco in the 60s.
Glam early 70s , disco came later in that wonderful decade
It certainly does we had the priviledge of growing up with such amazing sounds
Banger racing has immortalised this wonderful record into foreverness
Certainly don't write songs like this anymore, it's a shame wish l could go back to the 1970's great times am sure listening to songs like this!!
It's crap .
The whole point is to mock it! Utterly silly and meaningless, and you can't stop smiling.
this was playing when i met my future wife, it became our song, RIP Beryl
Sweetheart love😊😊😊
God bless x
Sorry to hear of your loss. :(
@@geoffjoffy i keep playing mouldy old dough it makes me feel close to beryl again
@@johnsmith-bx4rn I thought it might. Comforting. Music has a wonderful effect.
AH memories.Luved the tune but could never remember the words.Classic.Lve from Australia keep safe everyone
A true great tune and that flute playing was brilliant gave the song a real edge and that last bit the hairs go up on the back of your neck wonder where the name of the music Mouldy Old dough come from.
I was 12 in 1970, what a fantastic decade, the worlds longest party.
I was 10. Remember power cuts,3 day week, winter of discontent, television always break-in down. Great party!
RTK me too 👍🏼
I can't remember it
Depends on who you ask. I heard the 20's were roaring. The 90's were nothing to shake a stick at either.
@bofursgun anyone who types the sentence "only coz you wuz young...truth" is a farce. You were not alive in the 70's...and if you were, shame on you for adopting such illiterate and utterly tasteless ways of communicating your thoughts.
