Hilda Woodward died, aged 85, on 22 February 1999. She was aged 60 at the time of "Mouldy Old Dough" topping the charts, which made her one of the oldest female artists to feature on a UK number one single.
Always loved this, what makes it even better is that his mum is on stage with her son rocking out this now iconic piece of music loved by banger racers everywhere
we got a young lad at work and we were talking about music and he shocked me that he knew this song....he said its always played at banger racing......who knew...
I adore this record. My Mum bought it in the early 70’s and never stopped playing it. It’s great and it’s fun. I’m now the same age as the lovely lady on the piano.
Amazing remember it when it was a hit , just a piece of music that stays with you. People listening to it for the first time must be thinking what were they doing back in the 70’s
I was growing up during that era - born in 1970 and so just two and in the pushchair here. Playing with my toys and not old enough to understand or remember that period first time round!
Priceless! I adore the juxtaposition all the super 70s glitter of self, especially those amazing rainbow pants and then the older woman filled with such elegance of a different kind, happily banging away on that piano with them!
Yet in the U.S., it didn't even make any of the charts there (Billboard, Cash Box, Record World). One of the songs at #1 in Billboard while this was atop the UK charts was "Ben" by Michael Jackson; "MOD's" last week at #1 in Britain was the first of four weeks for the top in the States for Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now." (The middle two weeks, future UK #1 "My Ding-A-Ling" by Chuck Berry topped the US charts.) If this is of consolation, one of the US #1's in 1972 - "The Candy Man" by Sammy Davis Jr. - never made the UK charts.
@@AspireDecorating - Funny, a lot of what topped the UK charts in the '70's could be inferred of Etons' taste - or, some would say, lack thereof. ("D-I-V-O-R-C-E" by Billy Connolly, anyone?)

To this day still played just before the teams come out at Boundary Park. Oldham Athletic .Every time I hear it, takes be back to being a12 year old kid at the match.
I have absolutely no idea why, but today - travelling about - doing my work - I suddenly found myself thinking of this band and this song. No prompts, no stimulus. Weird. Great wacky little song. Nothing like this would ever cut through nowadays. The 1970's were great for eccentric bands and songs..

Can imagine this playing in some 80s pub while a bar-room brawl of incredible violence kicks off. Complete with a few windows being put through. Marvellous stuff. 🍻
Number 1 when my wife was born. She still loves it to this day but has never seen the actual group, which is nothing like she imagined! Glam rock n roll with a cowboy/western tune and a little, older lady playing the piano??!! Now that’s unique!
I've always loved this song! Since first hearing it back in the day and being given it on 7" vinyl, which I still have but only listen to it on here or mp3 these days... But still a favourite ❤️♥️❤️

My earliest memory of watching TOTPS back in '72. Just moved house and swapped infants school.
