  • World’s Smallest Compact Full Frame Zoom Lens - Sony 28-60mm F4-5.6 | is it worth it?
In the pro photographer world it is taboo to want to use a kit lens. But what if the kit lens is revolutionary and adds the ability to be a great walk around lens with respectable features to capture images discretely and without taking much space in your camera bag!?
This lens is not my go to lens for most things but I think it certainly has a place as an easy travel, casual, unobtrusive or intimidating photography or video lens. For the beginner who won’t want to be limited to one focal length, this offers what most kit lenses do and you can still get decent results if you put the effort into composition, editing etc. I tested for photos and video results and I’m quite happy with what it can do when I adjust my expectations with this being the smallest zoom lens ever made, which means there are limitations and downsides. But hey, it is weather sealed, has linear auto focus motor, and three aspherical elements. It is a great kit lens. I’ll keep using it to find out if it’s a keeper or not. Also for the pros out there, please. This will never compete or be compared with a 2.8 or prime lens aside from size.
    Enjoy!

Dude you're doing a talking head video for a significant part of this, stop it with the video head tracking it's pretty jarring and annoying, you're in center frame anyway and you're sitting down, no amount of head movement will make you go out of frame.

lol thanks for watching, I’m still getting use to the Dji Osmo pocket 3 and deciding if I want to keep using it for this type of talking head or not, thanks for pointing that out. Trust me, I’m not trying to annoy anyone.

I thought you are going to test the photo part with A7R5 with the 61MP sensor. A7R5 is not known for its video capabilities but photography. I know you mentioned it near the end but no samples only talks.

Thanks for watching! I have other videos where I show the photo and video capabilities. Although the A7RV wouldn’t be considered as a video first camera it is very capable and produces excellent video. A very good hybrid camera.

Definitely smaller, just didn’t have that one. Wanted to use the larger body with the compact lens to see how it works out

Yeah it feels like I’ve had to defend it! But it’s a good lens in its own right, people just need to accept it’s to not suppose to be a G Master.

The 35 2.8 ZA makes this lens, in my opinion, redundant at best. If it could compare with the zeiss image quality, that is.

Any prime is better than this lens, but this lens is for the beginner who doesn’t want to stick to one focal length and needs something compact. And yeah you’re right, It’s never going to match a Zeiss.

Having owned over fifty lenses I can confidently say this pancake lens is among the worst of all. In my experience it does nothing well, weak bokeh, limited range lacking reach or compression, variable aperture lacking speed and kit style image quality and having to twist it "on" with every use proved an annoyance. If you need a small camera use your phone otherwise get a few fast primes or the Sigma 28-70 f2.8.

Thanks for watching and sharing. Yeah this lens isn’t going to win any awards and is not meant to replace any prime or 2.8 zoom. It’s a kit lens and that’s how I approached my review. For the money and what it does at this level it’s decent. Many people started with kit lenses whether it’s mirrorless or dslr, it’s a starter lens and when people out grow it they get rid of it, doesn’t mean you cant get something decent out of it. When you are starting and on a budget you work with what you have until you level up so to say which you are familiar with after using many lenses. This lens will never compete with a 2.8 zoom or a prime, and a person who would end up using this lens wouldn’t want to be limited to one focal length, so in my opinion it has its place even if most of us won’t end up wanting this lens. I was curious and wanted to check it out, but it is no longer with me. I plan on making another follow up that expands on that.

@@timothy790110 So what qualities of this lens set it apart in your experience other than it being small and relatively inexpensive?

@@tomirwinphoto Its a compact zoom. thats what sets it apart. Now within compact zooms, this is actually a GOOD compact zoom. But dont take my word for it, take Fred/Mirandas. Or Mark Galer. Or Christopher Frost. Or Dustin Abbott.
