The sad thing is this is a no win situation... There's always going to be a parent or parents that think their kids are already pro and are entitled to do or say whatever they want...
I accidently stumbled across this video and as my short experience as an umpire for one season and I understand how awful the parents are to the refs. Yes I made bad calls but still, I've never felt so verbally abused and I'm in highschool
Senior year football make or brake, really crazy when you see college scouts looking at one or two players and the others not even on the board. The coach would have to talk them privately and basically tell them there kid doesn’t meet college level standards to play ball. You wanna talk about “wow” and this guy (coach) is making peanuts
I quit coaching kids over the emotional parents, I don't blame the referees for quitting too. Poor kids are the ones that get the short end of the stick
Same here, the few parents that pushed and trolled and pushed and trolled- really took out the fun. I was an unpaid volunteer for club basketball teams. Both boys and girls. We were in the championship game every year except the time we got 3rd.
My Brit brother living in the USA, volunteered to coach lacrosse at the local high-school, having been a high-level player. He soon suspended the 'star player' for lack of on-field and training discipline. The kid was a know-all 'Star' and had been treated as such. My brother was practically attacked in the car-park by many of the parents. 'He's our star player!' Rick just said, 'Tough. Until he learns, he's on the bench.' It was such an issue that the School Board became involved, the Community Leaders, all sorts. He was ostracised in some local stores. It went totally crazy until Rick just walked into the School office and quit, leaving them with ringing ears and no coach.. Many of the other players, though, were pleased he took the stance.
@@MultiTurbospeed Not easy at a local high school, maybe. It seemed the parents were overly involved. Myself, as a high-school, then club lacrosse player in the UK, we were lucky to have a couple of dozen spectators. Playing in the winter didn't help.
I respectfully disagree. I student taught for a year in a public high school in the late 70’s. Even then, you’d see parents only very, VERY rarely, probably about 10% at most would come to parent teacher nights. Today, if they even have parent teacher nights, I’m guessing it’s about 5%. And in both decades,I’m sure it’s the parents of good students that come. The parents of the bad students simply don’t care.
I coached soccer for years. We had a certain team whose parents would always hammer the refs until a new ref showed up. His daytime job was a Sergeant with the Florida Highway Patrol and retired military man. After an altercation with the parents and some dads being taken to jail, this team finally got the message. Good times.
So many lousy parents. I can tell you all kinds of stories as I just retired as a teacher. What a group of toxic people in our society who haven't grown up!!
I reffed youth soccer while I was in high school (played in high school) and high school when I was in college. The parents at youth soccer were the absolute worst. I had one parent escorted away by the police. He was threatening the opposing players. At an 11-12 girl's game.
Funny part about it, they don’t know the rules at all but think they do! I had one guy calling ball and strikes from the first base side!! And had a parent yell at me about a backcourt call and I just turned to hun and said read a “rule book”! Didn’t hear from him all game!! Belittle their intelligence and they will most likely stop.
I was doing a U13 soccer game, finally had enough of a parent, told the coach he could chose, either he left or the parent with the .... coat on left, his choice. The parent left after the coach told him it was time to go. Moving back up the field after the ball went off the end, kid jogs next to me, calmly thanks me for getting rid of his father and apologized for his dad being such an ass. I kind of felt sorry for the kid.

I’m 14 and a soccer referee, and I’ve had parents loose there mind against a call I’ve made. They’ve obviously haven’t read the laws of the game, but it’s even worse that I’m a kid and acting more responsible than them
14 y/o current soccer ref here too. It really stinks when you get that backlash, especially really early on, when everyone expects you to be Mike Dean level officiating for the local youth game. I still don’t understand why people think it will change a refs call.
18 y/o ref here, I truely love the game and want it to grow with new players. However, I've refed a few games where the parents someone find it ok to scream and yell slurs because they disagree. Since when was this ok behaviour? Keep to your calls and don't let them push you around.

Their actions aren’t wrong. It’s the officials that are in the wrong. Costing teams games with shitty officiating. You have one job. Get the call right. Can’t do that and you deserve all the righteous anger.

My brother coached girl's soccer for several years. He loved it. He was loved and respected by the girls he coached. He quit after a few years. The reason? The parents.
I have officiated over 25 years in volleyball, basketball and softball. Basketball is by far the worst for bad behavior. People think that they can act anyway they want since they bought a ticket. I have had police show up to make sure no fights ensue. The losers in all this are the players. I got tired of being yelled at sometimes, but most of it was minor. My favorite moment was when I called a foul and the coach whose player was fouled yelled " come on, call the fouls". MY response was. "coach, your guy is shooting free throws. what more can I do?" he just looked at me. some coaches just yell to be yelling, has nothing to do with the play.
The hockey coach that told me to "Call it both ways" 15 seconds into the game. Opening face off - puck goes into one corner - the visiting team forward takes a running leap elbows high into the back of the head of his opponent into the boards. Easiest penalty i've ever called. we are literally 15 seconds into the game. As I skate past the bench his coach screams, "COME ON REF - YOU GOTTA CALL IT BOTH WAYS!!!" I didn't even know how to respond or what he could have possibly meant.
Years ago, at a Atom (10-11) tournament hockey game a friend of mine was doing lines. It was a Friday afternoon and officials were very hard to come by as most were working or in school. My friend was in town and as a favour agreed to help out. We chatted by the blue line during pre game. When the game started, he went about his business and I cheered on my son's team, Midway through the second period he made a good call at the line and a parent, about 10 ft. away screamed "That was a terrible call, where did you learn to ref?" My eyes and my friend's met and the two of us laughed out loud. I walked over to the dad and asked him if he knew who he was yelling at. He said "no." I told him that it was an NHL trainee referee that was in town to do the Major Junior game that night. His sheepish response "well I guess it wasn't that bad after all". He was quiet for the rest of the game.
Had the same kind of situation, reffing Football eons ago in Canada. Was a horrid day rain coming down in droves. We were lucky to have the Referee who reffed the last two CFL Grey Cups, Canadian equivalent to the Super Bowl, as he was in town and we were short refs. Back then the CFL refs were allowed to do HS. Anyway, the Coach of one team was losing it over and over. Halftime he said enough, so as his Umpire we walked over, and I said let me take the lead, as the Coach had no clue who he was, he laughed and said have at it. He followed me over and was wiping down with his towel and the Coach is losing it again. So I introduced the Coach to the White Hat, and before the White Hat threw him, he said, I am sorry I do not know your rule book. The coach just turned and slithered off. Within 5 minutes the sun came out and the Ref said, damn should of thrown him earlier.
I used to umpire. I had to stop a game because a few of the parents became so abusive ti my partner and I that I pulled the players off the field. I told both coaches it ws in their best interest to get the adults to cut the crap or my partner and I would deem the game a double forfeit. One of the fathers who was known as a hot head and thought he could settle any issue with his fists, threatened to "kick my ass"..Instead of backing down, I told him to leave the park or the police would be called. He was furious. He tried to get on the field, I told him he was now banned from all games and It was going into my report to the league. He then started ranting about his status as a taxpayer...blah blah blah.....I just walked away and stood on the pitcher's mound. Ignoring him seemed to further enrage this guy. Luckily, a police officer just pulled into the parking lot.....One of the coaches, home team, must have told the cop to get the jerk to leave but not make an arrest. THe guy left. I then allowed the game to continue. The guy was banned for the rest of the season.
When I reffed, I’d tell the coaches that if they’d rather call the game on their own, I’d be more than happy to hand over the whistle. I’d say the same thing to parents. This would usually shut them up a while. But I got to the point where the few bucks I got per game was not worth the effort... At some point in future, there won’t be anyone left to ref games
I refed hockey way back in the 1970's. I had coffee thrown on me, was punched by one mother, and was verbally abused on a regular basis. And it wasn't because I was a bad ref. It was because they were bad parents. I quit after 2 years. I went on to coach kids baseball, and never had a problem with parents doing that.
That is the story the ref told, she might have said mom, will you please calm down, I travelled? Was the ref quoting verbatim? I guess we will never know?
With yah brother. I umpired one year Junior High Baseball and the kids were great but parents and coaches ended up making me pass on the next season. Clueless people. I am a former 19 year HC in American Football and I know I acted accordingly so it can be done. Sucks for all those kids that you couldn't coach.
It’s ugly out there. Mid nineties. My son a rather large baby and toddler, loved soccer starting around 2yo. So by the time he started playing in a 4yo indoor tots league his skills were well advanced for his age plus he was a head taller than many of the other kids. So not 10mins into his very first game, parents around me and wife were commenting abt how he looks too old and he’s too good, he couldn’t possibly be a 4yo. To the point were those parents starting yelling that same thing during the game. Complete madness. Fortunately we had friends there that spoke up for us and assured them he was indeed a 4yo.
I had a parent complain and get in my face and I told him to leave the court or the team will forfeit and he wasn’t even a coach. He left and after game, waited in the hallway with his wife yelling at me telling me I will get U fired and I said “go ahead and get me fired cause this job doesn’t mean that much to me!” Turns out the dad and mom we’re members of the YMCA board and they were not released as board members nor suspended because of their actions. Problem is YMCA and other organizations don’t do enough to protect the refs so why bother being a ref.
Our society in too many cases is very toxic. I taught for 17 years and the classroom has become quite toxic as well. Lousy parents raise lousy kids and we wonder what's wrong with our country. Politics these days are also conducted by a group that's part of the toxic party as well. This needs to change, this country sucks!!!
I was a referee for years and I stopped because of how parents were acting even though I loved it. Not enough support for refs. Parents are just allowed to go crazy and refs are just supposed to take it. I was 14 when I started and I had adult threaten me and scream at me which in any other situation would have been unacceptable but somehow it’s ok when I wore that stripped shirt?

Went to my son’s flag football game this past Sunday... was perplexed when police, fire, and ambulance crews showed up. Two parents from the game before got into a fistfight in the stands. People are assholes.
Something needs to be done or it will continue to get worse and there won't be enough refs. I honestly couldn't stand being around these people being loud and obnoxious over a game.
I stopped officiating high school baseball and soccer because of the parents. They think because you are getting paid they own you and their Johnny super star can do no wrong.
Baseball is by far the worst. The culture needs to change before umpires start to come back. Our association has lost umpires every year I’ve been there because of ridiculous behavior by fans AND coaches. The solution is the shut down ANY misbehavior by coaches immediately. I should only have to explain myself ONCE after I render a decision. Any arguing after that will be unacceptable. Officials are hurting. Bad. There needs to be a change.
20+ year official here. I would ask people, if you had a waitress and she brought you the wrong drink. Honest mistake and she is trying to do her job the best she can. Would you call her a moron or threaten her. But a lot of people think that is fine behavior toward an official who is trying to do his/her job the best he/she can.
I was a football referee for three years and quit because of the parents. However, in all the three years I never had a problem with a coach because they knew I had a reputation of calling a fair game.

I was a soccer ref when I was a high school kid. Had a parent call me a horrible name. I quit on the spot. In my 30s now. Thought about starting again to make some extra cash. Don't think I could after watching this
I ref Tae Kwon Do sparring, and have been doing it for about 10 years now. Ejection is the only cure for the bad parents. No warning specifically, just a notice to all viewers that there are no objections to calls, no foul or abuse language, and "...this is your only notice." If it's a parent of a participant, penalty point awarded to the opponent. Oh, and I'm a 3rd degree Black Belt, so no one usually gets in my face....
I played travel hockey, and baseball from the age of 5-18, during the 60's and 70's, and my parents never, ever became unruly. They loved the games, just knowing we were happy. As a parent of 2 boys myself, who played a lot of hockey, and soccer, I witnessed enough parents that were out there embarrassing their kids, while harassing the officials. A few times I would find myself telling another parent to shut the fuck up, and let the kids have fun.
Parents don’t want to see their kids fail or lose. So they act out thinking this is going to help or protect them. They need to just stand by and let the kids learn how to pick themselves up and learn from a failure. Most kids just want to have fun at sports with their friends. The parents are the ones who make it ultra competitive. It’s like they’re putting their own little gladiator into the Colosseum to fight to the death.
One does have to wonder how much of this is a consequence of the multimillion dollar contracts that professional athletes get. A father might think that every time his kid strikes out, that another $1000 off the signing bonus.
I coached for many years and I still remember the day I was approached by the ref on the field and was asked me to get my parents under control. When I went to speak to my parents it turned out two dads were singing "I'm blind, I'm deaf, I want to be a ref" over and over again. I put my foot down and it stopped... sometimes it makes a difference if they think their kid will lose playing time for their bad behavior.
I became a soccer ref when my kids were playing just because of this bad behavior . I watched parent yelling at a sixteen year old kid to the point he was in tears by the end of the game. Unfortunately it still isn’t getting any better.
I was a football ref for about 5 years. I used to tell everyone the worst part were the parents. A good amount of them didn't even know the rules. They would watch the NFL and think those rules were the same for high school. It is true, the kids end up with less games because finding refs are tough.
I refereed soccer starting when I was 12. I once was a line ref for an under 10 girls game and AS A 12 YEAR OLD, I had one of the parents swat the flag out of my hand and yell at me for making what he thought was a bad call.
My dad use to be a high scholl football referee and a high school basketball official. There were multiple occasions where the parent tried to talk to him after the game and he would just walk away becauaw he knew what was going to happen
I remember about 10 years ago I was a hockey ref for high school and I reffed a blowout. I was like 11-0 and one of the parents of losing road team came up to me and complained about me and the other ref being homers and I proceeded to show him the score sheet it was like 12-3 penalties. You had 9 more power plays and couldn’t score once.
Love this. I had a similar encounter - a horrible game between two Midget AA teams that were only on the ice to try and hack/whack/hook/slash their way through the game. It was a sh*tshow from the first whistle. After the game the parent told me "You lost control of that game!" I showed him the score sheet. 28 penalties or something. I replied, "Sir... i had COMPLETE control over that game... it was the coaches and players that had no control. I called it they way they played it - and i'm sorry neither team came to play hockey."
The rinks around where I live had to kick out the hockey moms for the same reason. They are just brutal!! What is the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull ??? LIPSTICK!!!
There was one hockey mom at a tourney who had no idea what a delayed offside was. She would be SCREAMING AND SCREAMING about a kid being offside when his team didn't even have control of the puck. When there was finally a legit offsides - she started whooping and cheering "FINALLY>>>> FINALLY!!!!!" I looked up to see which genius parent this was for reference. Shook my head and went about the game.
I ran a high school hockey club for seven years as the volunteer administrator. I did this because I wanted to play hockey as a kid but my parents couldn't afford it. It was considered a "rich kid" game and I wanted to change that by running a team that was affordable. Our fees were the lowest of the leagues 85 teams. The parents often treated me like an employee barking orders at me. Some would show up drunk to the games and on more than a few occasions I had to go babysit them in the stands to keep them from yelling obscenities. I literally got screamed at by a parent for 93.6 minutes (I timed the conversation on my phone) who was upset that her kid wasn't getting playing time. The fact that he never showed up for practice and was under concussion protocol didn't matter to her. When my mother passed away suddenly, only one parent (a step-grandparent actually) sent condolences. When I left I resolved that I will never give up the little time I have on this blue marble for someone else's kid. Ever. These parents act like breeding gives them special permission to be complete c$nts to everyone around them and I am having none of it. They can do it themselves from now on.
My friend was an umpire for Little League baseball. During one game the two teams (including the two coaches) got into an all-out brawl, fists, feet, and bats. That's right, the bats too! As the umpire, he left the plate and sat back in the stands to watch. One parent said, "You're the umpire, go do something!" He replied, "I referee baseball games, and who says they're playing baseball?"
Began long before millennials aged out... 25 years ago, while coaching a FUN league softball team turned to an abusive parent and handed him my clipboard and walked. Funny thing, the other parents told the wipe to stfu... Finished the season and never went back... Town now has to beg for coaches, for a for fun league...
My sister in law volunteered to coach a group a soccer kids aged 4-5. She said she will never do it again. My sister in law was on the varsity women’s soccer team all high school, and was given a sports scholarship opportunity. These parents would get mad at her for telling their child to not give up when they felt like it 🤦🏼♂️ this led to kids just walking away during drills and their parents allowing it. Parents certainly ruined the experience for her, and that’s just as a coach. It’s probably even worse for refs! Unbelievable!
I was a ref and a coach for many years. I do not know why anyone would want to get into either profession. What could be a fun and worthwhile way to stay connected to the games we love has quickly become a hostile place to be. I admire EVERY coach and EVERY official no matter what their skill level because they are out there doing it. It is a lot easier to sit on the sidelines and yell.
My kid wanted to play little league. I wanted that for him also and volunteered to be an umpire for the league. I lasted exactly two games. I couldn't believe how the parents and coaches acted towards me and the opposing teams and the parents were by far the worst. and this was just T-Ball! in the middle of the third game. I called the league president over, striped off my gear and dropped it font of him, and said, "this isn't how I want my kid to enjoy sports" That was the end of little league for my kid. Sad, but he lettered in three sports in high school. wrestling, track and water polo. This kind of shit isn't tolerated in those competitions!
As a former Camden high school teacher, I am not surprised to hear this. A black student defied me repeatedly, showed me disrespect repeatedly, cussed me off, interfered in other people's business, did not want to learn, and talked back to me while claiming authority in my own discipline. I had to call Security to remove him multiple times. His mother actually told me she was okay with his act of talking back and demanded to the principal that I not alter his grade for talking back. Then later she got mad at me for receiving notification that her son was failing and tried to blame it on my classroom management skills.
I used to ref for kids soccer and the amount of times parents yell at you because they're misinformed about the rules of the game, or just yell at you because they feel ad though they're better than you boggle my mind. Refs are underrated for having to constantly take crap from everybody.

I hung up the mask and penalty flag over 10 years ago after managing to work over 3,000 contests. My knees just could not take the punishment any longer. I always made it a point to introduce myself to the catcher prior to the first pitch and also asked their name. During a 14u baseball game I was getting grief from the head coach on the 3B side. Apparently, his catcher had a lower bullshit threshold than I did and actually told his coach to "shut the hell up. He's calling a good game." Didn't hear a peep for the rest of the game. It's always been the adults that have ruined youth sports. The kids just want to play.
Way back in the 1970s, I refereed our church league softball games. I was so disgusted with the parents that I totally quit that endeavor. Plus, I was a volunteer without pay. I lasted 2 weeks.
Maybe a simple solution. Make the child bring the misbehaving parent home. Suspend or eliminate parents as required from all games. If it negatively impacts a few/some players....handle the parents.
It's been the same for years in England. I played soccer as a kid in the late 80's to early 90's and saw appalling behaviour by parents. Full on fist fights and encouragement to cheat openly. The parents forget that they are supposed to ensure the kids have a good time but also learn honour, respect and fair play. But with some parents you'd think it was a World Cup final rather than a kids game. I quit playing at 14 because of aggravation caused by adults.
I umpired at a little leage field back in 2000. The T ball parents were the worst. I had to clear them bleachers a few times just so the kids could play. The coaches usually thanked me. Lol
The perfect reason for why I hate sports. Every single person who has never played, or is no longer playing a sport, has to put in their two cents. Just shut up and let the kids play. The school districts will sort it out if they feel that something is wrong. Referees are impartial and non-biased. They cannot call anything on one team, if they can't do it to the other. Let the kids play and keep your mouths shut.

In my 20s. reffing an under 30s league At that age group you get alot of Bro’s with something to prove from their youth. Bro subbed in and instantly started hacking at every play he could get near. Then he did a rough tackle which is an instant card. I went right to Red because I gave him a verbal earlier. He was bummed and waked right towards me towards the door and I patted him on the shoulder and said it’ll be all good and come back 2 games later and he lost his shit and screamed don’t touch me I will kill you then he ran to his truck where I thought he might be getting a gun right then and there but he just bailed instead. Spooked me.
Oh, the stories I could tell. While I was in college, I officiated several sports at all levels. Baseball, football, basketball. I was fun at first and I made a little money to keep me going. After 2-3 years, I gave up pop warner football because of the parents. Shortly after, I gave up little league because of the parents. I had parents yell at me constantly and some even threatened to kill me. This was in Arizona 35 years ago. The poor kids would be so embarrased by their parents behaviour. The problems were still there in high school but less frequent. We had a father jump the fence at a high school football game and bite the linesman. We all left and we call the game a forfeit. I had two coaches in a baseball game get in a fight at home plate. I have dozens of other stories that would take a hour to write. I can believe no one wants to ref these days. We had to go to class before each season and each sport to review the rules and procedures and take a test. It was a lot of work but I enjoyed it. Those kids made me run in basketball which kept me in good shape.
This is the bane for youth sports. Overreacting parents, I have been an Official for 30 years in Arizona (35 total counting being an official while serving in the US Army). I stoped calling games in the youth football league 2 years ago, as a parent came up to me at halftime, cussing my crew out for tossing out his son for wearing illegal cleats in a game. "Do you know how expensive theses are?" the parent said. He did not care that the cleats had spiked nubs on the top of the cleats, just how expensive the illegal cleates where. I quit Youth baseball 5 years ago, when the paents of a minors team "Tore apart" a "Junior Umpire" on the bases. The kid had talent, but was the son of coach in a higer level of baseball (Kid was 15, and the game was minors 8-9 year olds) My wife was in the stands. I sent her to our car for her safety, and tossed the now cussing parents out of the field. I am 55 now, and only have a couple of years left. I am concentrating on the High School level till I retire,
One time at a high school football game, the refs called penalties on both teams. One was a 5 yard penalty on one team and the other was a 15 yard penalty on the other team. The ref of course says, "Offsetting penalties. Replay the down." One dad jumps up and screams, "How do those penalties offset?" He demonstrated he didn't know as much about football as he thought he did.
I did the same once, or twice. The rules here are, if I warn the parent(s) and they don’t desist I can order them off the playing fields (to the parking area). If they don’t comply I can order the game abandoned with a forfeit to the non offending team. On each of the two occasions I had to sanction the parents, I was asked to do so by the child of those parents themselves, who were embarassed by their parents’ poor behaviour.

The sad thing is this is a no win situation... There's always going to be a parent or parents that think their kids are already pro and are entitled to do or say whatever they want...

Senior year football make or brake, really crazy when you see college scouts looking at one or two players and the others not even on the board. The coach would have to talk them privately and basically tell them there kid doesn’t meet college level standards to play ball. You wanna talk about “wow” and this guy (coach) is making peanuts

Same here, the few parents that pushed and trolled and pushed and trolled- really took out the fun. I was an unpaid volunteer for club basketball teams. Both boys and girls. We were in the championship game every year except the time we got 3rd.
My Brit brother living in the USA, volunteered to coach lacrosse at the local high-school, having been a high-level player. He soon suspended the 'star player' for lack of on-field and training discipline. The kid was a know-all 'Star' and had been treated as such. My brother was practically attacked in the car-park by many of the parents. 'He's our star player!' Rick just said, 'Tough. Until he learns, he's on the bench.' It was such an issue that the School Board became involved, the Community Leaders, all sorts. He was ostracised in some local stores. It went totally crazy until Rick just walked into the School office and quit, leaving them with ringing ears and no coach.. Many of the other players, though, were pleased he took the stance.

I respectfully disagree. I student taught for a year in a public high school in the late 70’s. Even then, you’d see parents only very, VERY rarely, probably about 10% at most would come to parent teacher nights. Today, if they even have parent teacher nights, I’m guessing it’s about 5%. And in both decades,I’m sure it’s the parents of good students that come. The parents of the bad students simply don’t care.

I coached soccer for years. We had a certain team whose parents would always hammer the refs until a new ref showed up. His daytime job was a Sergeant with the Florida Highway Patrol and retired military man. After an altercation with the parents and some dads being taken to jail, this team finally got the message. Good times.

I reffed youth soccer while I was in high school (played in high school) and high school when I was in college. The parents at youth soccer were the absolute worst. I had one parent escorted away by the police. He was threatening the opposing players. At an 11-12 girl's game.
I threw out a coach when I was a 16 year old umpire. A grown man acting like a fool, who didn't know the rules of the game he was coaching.
I lasted as a soccer referee for six years. My state is hurting for sports referees in general.

I was doing a U13 soccer game, finally had enough of a parent, told the coach he could chose, either he left or the parent with the .... coat on left, his choice. The parent left after the coach told him it was time to go. Moving back up the field after the ball went off the end, kid jogs next to me, calmly thanks me for getting rid of his father and apologized for his dad being such an ass. I kind of felt sorry for the kid.

I’m 14 and a soccer referee, and I’ve had parents loose there mind against a call I’ve made. They’ve obviously haven’t read the laws of the game, but it’s even worse that I’m a kid and acting more responsible than them
14 y/o current soccer ref here too. It really stinks when you get that backlash, especially really early on, when everyone expects you to be Mike Dean level officiating for the local youth game. I still don’t understand why people think it will change a refs call.
18 y/o ref here, I truely love the game and want it to grow with new players. However, I've refed a few games where the parents someone find it ok to scream and yell slurs because they disagree. Since when was this ok behaviour? Keep to your calls and don't let them push you around.

I have officiated over 25 years in volleyball, basketball and softball. Basketball is by far the worst for bad behavior. People think that they can act anyway they want since they bought a ticket. I have had police show up to make sure no fights ensue. The losers in all this are the players. I got tired of being yelled at sometimes, but most of it was minor. My favorite moment was when I called a foul and the coach whose player was fouled yelled " come on, call the fouls". MY response was. "coach, your guy is shooting free throws. what more can I do?" he just looked at me. some coaches just yell to be yelling, has nothing to do with the play.
The hockey coach that told me to "Call it both ways" 15 seconds into the game. Opening face off - puck goes into one corner - the visiting team forward takes a running leap elbows high into the back of the head of his opponent into the boards. Easiest penalty i've ever called. we are literally 15 seconds into the game. As I skate past the bench his coach screams, "COME ON REF - YOU GOTTA CALL IT BOTH WAYS!!!" I didn't even know how to respond or what he could have possibly meant.
My dad was one of these idiots trying to fight refs. It's so embarrassing. Parents can get real pathetic over their children real quick .

Years ago, at a Atom (10-11) tournament hockey game a friend of mine was doing lines. It was a Friday afternoon and officials were very hard to come by as most were working or in school. My friend was in town and as a favour agreed to help out. We chatted by the blue line during pre game. When the game started, he went about his business and I cheered on my son's team, Midway through the second period he made a good call at the line and a parent, about 10 ft. away screamed "That was a terrible call, where did you learn to ref?" My eyes and my friend's met and the two of us laughed out loud. I walked over to the dad and asked him if he knew who he was yelling at. He said "no." I told him that it was an NHL trainee referee that was in town to do the Major Junior game that night. His sheepish response "well I guess it wasn't that bad after all". He was quiet for the rest of the game.
Had the same kind of situation, reffing Football eons ago in Canada. Was a horrid day rain coming down in droves. We were lucky to have the Referee who reffed the last two CFL Grey Cups, Canadian equivalent to the Super Bowl, as he was in town and we were short refs. Back then the CFL refs were allowed to do HS. Anyway, the Coach of one team was losing it over and over. Halftime he said enough, so as his Umpire we walked over, and I said let me take the lead, as the Coach had no clue who he was, he laughed and said have at it. He followed me over and was wiping down with his towel and the Coach is losing it again. So I introduced the Coach to the White Hat, and before the White Hat threw him, he said, I am sorry I do not know your rule book. The coach just turned and slithered off. Within 5 minutes the sun came out and the Ref said, damn should of thrown him earlier.

I used to umpire. I had to stop a game because a few of the parents became so abusive ti my partner and I that I pulled the players off the field. I told both coaches it ws in their best interest to get the adults to cut the crap or my partner and I would deem the game a double forfeit.
One of the fathers who was known as a hot head and thought he could settle any issue with his fists, threatened to "kick my ass"..Instead of backing down, I told him to leave the park or the police would be called. He was furious. He tried to get on the field, I told him he was now banned from all games and It was going into my report to the league.
He then started ranting about his status as a taxpayer...blah blah blah.....I just walked away and stood on the pitcher's mound. Ignoring him seemed to further enrage this guy. Luckily, a police officer just pulled into the parking lot.....One of the coaches, home team, must have told the cop to get the jerk to leave but not make an arrest.
THe guy left. I then allowed the game to continue.
The guy was banned for the rest of the season.
Those are all the parents that never started a game in their lives, hoping their children are not bench players like they were
When I reffed, I’d tell the coaches that if they’d rather call the game on their own, I’d be more than happy to hand over the whistle. I’d say the same thing to parents. This would usually shut them up a while. But I got to the point where the few bucks I got per game was not worth the effort... At some point in future, there won’t be anyone left to ref games
I refed hockey way back in the 1970's. I had coffee thrown on me, was punched by one mother, and was verbally abused on a regular basis. And it wasn't because I was a bad ref. It was because they were bad parents. I quit after 2 years. I went on to coach kids baseball, and never had a problem with parents doing that.
And that's sad!

I am a former 19 year HC in American Football and I know I acted accordingly so it can be done. Sucks for all those kids that you couldn't coach.
It’s ugly out there. Mid nineties. My son a rather large baby and toddler, loved soccer starting around 2yo. So by the time he started playing in a 4yo indoor tots league his skills were well advanced for his age plus he was a head taller than many of the other kids. So not 10mins into his very first game, parents around me and wife were commenting abt how he looks too old and he’s too good, he couldn’t possibly be a 4yo. To the point were those parents starting yelling that same thing during the game. Complete madness. Fortunately we had friends there that spoke up for us and assured them he was indeed a 4yo.
I had a parent complain and get in my face and I told him to leave the court or the team will forfeit and he wasn’t even a coach. He left and after game, waited in the hallway with his wife yelling at me telling me I will get U fired and I said “go ahead and get me fired cause this job doesn’t mean that much to me!” Turns out the dad and mom we’re members of the YMCA board and they were not released as board members nor suspended because of their actions. Problem is YMCA and other organizations don’t do enough to protect the refs so why bother being a ref.
Our society in too many cases is very toxic. I taught for 17 years and the classroom has become quite toxic as well. Lousy parents raise lousy kids and we wonder what's wrong with our country. Politics these days are also conducted by a group that's part of the toxic party as well. This needs to change, this country sucks!!!
I was a referee for years and I stopped because of how parents were acting even though I loved it. Not enough support for refs. Parents are just allowed to go crazy and refs are just supposed to take it. I stopped officiating high school baseball and soccer because of the parents. They think because you are getting paid they own you and their Johnny super star can do no wrong.
Baseball is by far the worst. The culture needs to change before umpires start to come back. Our association has lost umpires every year I’ve been there because of ridiculous behavior by fans AND coaches. The solution is the shut down ANY misbehavior by coaches immediately. I should only have to explain myself ONCE after I render a decision. Any arguing after that will be unacceptable. Officials are hurting. Bad. There needs to be a change.

20+ year official here. I would ask people, if you had a waitress and she brought you the wrong drink. Honest mistake and she is trying to do her job the best she can. Would you call her a moron or threaten her. But a lot of people think that is fine behavior toward an official who is trying to do his/her job the best he/she can.
I was a football referee for three years and quit because of the parents. However, in all the three years I never had a problem with a coach because they knew I had a reputation of calling a fair game.

I was a soccer ref when I was a high school kid. Had a parent call me a horrible name. I quit on the spot. In my 30s now. Thought about starting again to make some extra cash. Don't think I could after watching this
I ref Tae Kwon Do sparring, and have been doing it for about 10 years now. Ejection is the only cure for the bad parents. No warning specifically, just a notice to all viewers that there are no objections to calls, no foul or abuse language, and "...this is your only notice." If it's a parent of a participant, penalty point awarded to the opponent. Oh, and I'm a 3rd degree Black Belt, so no one usually gets in my face....
The kids start quitting and parents ask why. Tell them because the parents act more like children than the ones playing the.game .its embarrassing
I played travel hockey, and baseball from the age of 5-18, during the 60's and 70's, and my parents never, ever became unruly. They loved the games, just knowing we were happy. As a parent of 2 boys myself, who played a lot of hockey, and soccer, I witnessed enough parents that were out there embarrassing their kids, while harassing the officials. A few times I would find myself telling another parent to shut the fuck up, and let the kids have fun.

Parents don’t want to see their kids fail or lose. So they act out thinking this is going to help or protect them. They need to just stand by and let the kids learn how to pick themselves up and learn from a failure. Most kids just want to have fun at sports with their friends. The parents are the ones who make it ultra competitive. It’s like they’re putting their own little gladiator into the Colosseum to fight to the death.

One does have to wonder how much of this is a consequence of the multimillion dollar contracts that professional athletes get. A father might think that every time his kid strikes out, that another $1000 off the signing bonus.

I coached for many years and I still remember the day I was approached by the ref on the field and was asked me to get my parents under control. When I went to speak to my parents it turned out two dads were singing "I'm blind, I'm deaf, I want to be a ref" over and over again. I put my foot down and it stopped... sometimes it makes a difference if they think their kid will lose playing time for their bad behavior.
I became a soccer ref when my kids were playing just because of this bad behavior . I watched parent yelling at a sixteen year old kid to the point he was in tears by the end of the game. Unfortunately it still isn’t getting any better.
This is why I never volunteer or give money to charities. Humanity is so unworthy.
I was a football ref for about 5 years. I used to tell everyone the worst part were the parents. A good amount of them didn't even know the rules. They would watch the NFL and think those rules were the same for high school. It is true, the kids end up with less games because finding refs are tough.
I refereed soccer starting when I was 12. I once was a line ref for an under 10 girls game and AS A 12 YEAR OLD, I had one of the parents swat the flag out of my hand and yell at me for making what he thought was a bad call.
My dad use to be a high scholl football referee and a high school basketball official. There were multiple occasions where the parent tried to talk to him after the game and he would just walk away becauaw he knew what was going to happen

I remember about 10 years ago I was a hockey ref for high school and I reffed a blowout. I was like 11-0 and one of the parents of losing road team came up to me and complained about me and the other ref being homers and I proceeded to show him the score sheet it was like 12-3 penalties. You had 9 more power plays and couldn’t score once.
Love this. I had a similar encounter - a horrible game between two Midget AA teams that were only on the ice to try and hack/whack/hook/slash their way through the game. It was a sh*tshow from the first whistle. After the game the parent told me "You lost control of that game!" I showed him the score sheet. 28 penalties or something. I replied, "Sir... i had COMPLETE control over that game... it was the coaches and players that had no control. I called it they way they played it - and i'm sorry neither team came to play hockey."

There was one hockey mom at a tourney who had no idea what a delayed offside was. She would be SCREAMING AND SCREAMING about a kid being offside when his team didn't even have control of the puck. When there was finally a legit offsides - she started whooping and cheering "FINALLY>>>> FINALLY!!!!!" I looked up to see which genius parent this was for reference. Shook my head and went about the game.

I ran a high school hockey club for seven years as the volunteer administrator. I did this because I wanted to play hockey as a kid but my parents couldn't afford it. It was considered a "rich kid" game and I wanted to change that by running a team that was affordable. Our fees were the lowest of the leagues 85 teams.
The parents often treated me like an employee barking orders at me. Some would show up drunk to the games and on more than a few occasions I had to go babysit them in the stands to keep them from yelling obscenities. I literally got screamed at by a parent for 93.6 minutes (I timed the conversation on my phone) who was upset that her kid wasn't getting playing time. The fact that he never showed up for practice and was under concussion protocol didn't matter to her. When my mother passed away suddenly, only one parent (a step-grandparent actually) sent condolences.
When I left I resolved that I will never give up the little time I have on this blue marble for someone else's kid. Ever. These parents act like breeding gives them special permission to be complete c$nts to everyone around them and I am having none of it. They can do it themselves from now on.
My friend was an umpire for Little League baseball. During one game the two teams (including the two coaches) got into an all-out brawl, fists, feet, and bats. That's right, the bats too! As the umpire, he left the plate and sat back in the stands to watch. One parent said, "You're the umpire, go do something!" He replied, "I referee baseball games, and who says they're playing baseball?"
I once yelled at my parents to shut the f up and let us play for screaming at the ref. I walked home that day

Began long before millennials aged out... 25 years ago, while coaching a FUN league softball team turned to an abusive parent and handed him my clipboard and walked. Funny thing, the other parents told the wipe to stfu... Finished the season and never went back... Town now has to beg for coaches, for a for fun league...
Having a kid and being a parent are 2 completely different things.
My sister in law volunteered to coach a group a soccer kids aged 4-5. She said she will never do it again. My sister in law was on the varsity women’s soccer team all high school, and was given a sports scholarship opportunity. These parents would get mad at her for telling their child to not give up when they felt like it 🤦🏼♂️ this led to kids just walking away during drills and their parents allowing it. Parents certainly ruined the experience for her, and that’s just as a coach. It’s probably even worse for refs! Unbelievable!
Before this rule was put in place I had a friend coaching little league ball and a mad parent cussed him out after a game, so he quit
I was a ref and a coach for many years. I do not know why anyone would want to get into either profession. What could be a fun and worthwhile way to stay connected to the games we love has quickly become a hostile place to be. I admire EVERY coach and EVERY official no matter what their skill level because they are out there doing it. It is a lot easier to sit on the sidelines and yell.
My kid wanted to play little league. I wanted that for him also and volunteered to be an umpire for the league. I lasted exactly two games. I couldn't believe how the parents and coaches acted towards me and the opposing teams and the parents were by far the worst. and this was just T-Ball! in the middle of the third game. I called the league president over, striped off my gear and dropped it font of him, and said, "this isn't how I want my kid to enjoy sports" That was the end of little league for my kid. Sad, but he lettered in three sports in high school. wrestling, track and water polo. This kind of shit isn't tolerated in those competitions!
As a former Camden high school teacher, I am not surprised to hear this. A black student defied me repeatedly, showed me disrespect repeatedly, cussed me off, interfered in other people's business, did not want to learn, and talked back to me while claiming authority in my own discipline. I had to call Security to remove him multiple times. His mother actually told me she was okay with his act of talking back and demanded to the principal that I not alter his grade for talking back. Then later she got mad at me for receiving notification that her son was failing and tried to blame it on my classroom management skills.
I used to ref for kids soccer and the amount of times parents yell at you because they're misinformed about the rules of the game, or just yell at you because they feel ad though they're better than you boggle my mind. Refs are underrated for having to constantly take crap from everybody.
I quit the first day. I was an umpire for a girls softball game and the parents were horrible. The things they said were disgusting. By the way, I was 18 at the time and I would never do that again.
I hung up the mask and penalty flag over 10 years ago after managing to work over 3,000 contests. My knees just could not take the punishment any longer. I always made it a point to introduce myself to the catcher prior to the first pitch and also asked their name. During a 14u baseball game I was getting grief from the head coach on the 3B side. Apparently, his catcher had a lower bullshit threshold than I did and actually told his coach to "shut the hell up. He's calling a good game." Didn't hear a peep for the rest of the game.
It's always been the adults that have ruined youth sports. The kids just want to play.

Way back in the 1970s, I refereed our church league softball games. I was so disgusted with the parents that I totally quit that endeavor. Plus, I was a volunteer without pay. I lasted 2 weeks.
Maybe a simple solution. Make the child bring the misbehaving parent home. Suspend or eliminate parents as required from all games. If it negatively impacts a few/some players....handle the parents.
It's been the same for years in England. I played soccer as a kid in the late 80's to early 90's and saw appalling behaviour by parents. Full on fist fights and encouragement to cheat openly. The parents forget that they are supposed to ensure the kids have a good time but also learn honour, respect and fair play. But with some parents you'd think it was a World Cup final rather than a kids game. I quit playing at 14 because of aggravation caused by adults.

I umpired at a little leage field back in 2000. The T ball parents were the worst. I had to clear them bleachers a few times just so the kids could play. The coaches usually thanked me. Lol
no wonder they get angry when they have invested their life savings so little jimmy has a 0.5% chance of making the big leagues
I am a ref. We get $25 a game and loads of crap. It's ridiculous when the most mature people are the 9 year olds.
I refereed kids basketball at the YMCA as a senior in HS. The parents were beyond awful.
The perfect reason for why I hate sports. Every single person who has never played, or is no longer playing a sport, has to put in their two cents. Just shut up and let the kids play. The school districts will sort it out if they feel that something is wrong. Referees are impartial and non-biased. They cannot call anything on one team, if they can't do it to the other. Let the kids play and keep your mouths shut.
Impartial and unbiased? That’s a joke right? There are many good refs, and the parents in this video were acting like ignorant fools, but every person here knows that many refs do their version of “hometown cooking” to control who wins games.

I guess my experience would be assistant coaching two state championship baseball teams and a fourth and a fifth place state finals finish. You can go ahead and ignore my comments though. The other assumption you made is that I cared what some confused moron like you thinks. Of course that other bit of coaching was aau basketball with a team that was ranked 7th in the nation. So yes. In my 20s. reffing an under 30s league At that age group you get alot of Bro’s with something to prove from their youth. Bro subbed in and instantly started hacking at every play he could get near. Then he did a rough tackle which is an instant card. I went right to Red because I gave him a verbal earlier. He was bummed and waked right towards me towards the door and I patted him on the shoulder and said it’ll be all good and come back 2 games later and he lost his shit and screamed don’t touch me I will kill you then he ran to his truck where I thought he might be getting a gun right then and there but he just bailed instead. Spooked me.

Oh, the stories I could tell. While I was in college, I officiated several sports at all levels. Baseball, football, basketball. I was fun at first and I made a little money to keep me going. After 2-3 years, I gave up pop warner football because of the parents. Shortly after, I gave up little league because of the parents. I had parents yell at me constantly and some even threatened to kill me. This was in Arizona 35 years ago. The poor kids would be so embarrased by their parents behaviour. The problems were still there in high school but less frequent. We had a father jump the fence at a high school football game and bite the linesman. We all left and we call the game a forfeit. I had two coaches in a baseball game get in a fight at home plate. I have dozens of other stories that would take a hour to write. I can believe no one wants to ref these days. We had to go to class before each season and each sport to review the rules and procedures and take a test. It was a lot of work but I enjoyed it. Those kids made me run in basketball which kept me in good shape.
This is the bane for youth sports. Overreacting parents, I have been an Official for 30 years in Arizona (35 total counting being an official while serving in the US Army). I stoped calling games in the youth football league 2 years ago, as a parent came up to me at halftime, cussing my crew out for tossing out his son for wearing illegal cleats in a game. "Do you know how expensive theses are?" the parent said. He did not care that the cleats had spiked nubs on the top of the cleats, just how expensive the illegal cleates where. I quit Youth baseball 5 years ago, when the paents of a minors team "Tore apart" a "Junior Umpire" on the bases. The kid had talent, but was the son of coach in a higer level of baseball (Kid was 15, and the game was minors 8-9 year olds) My wife was in the stands. I sent her to our car for her safety, and tossed the now cussing parents out of the field. I am 55 now, and only have a couple of years left. I am concentrating on the High School level till I retire,
I stopped coaching because of parents like this.
One time at a high school football game, the refs called penalties on both teams. One was a 5 yard penalty on one team and the other was a 15 yard penalty on the other team. The ref of course says, "Offsetting penalties. Replay the down." One dad jumps up and screams, "How do those penalties offset?" He demonstrated he didn't know as much about football as he thought he did.
Sadly it's true... but ever since us Polynesians started refereeing, parents starting being nothing but nice and respectful where I'm from. 🤣🤣🤣

I did the same once, or twice. The rules here are, if I warn the parent(s) and they don’t desist I can order them off the playing fields (to the parking area). If they don’t comply I can order the game abandoned with a forfeit to the non offending team. On each of the two occasions I had to sanction the parents, I was asked to do so by the child of those parents themselves, who were embarassed by their parents’ poor behaviour.
