    I never started my solo adventures until I was in my 50’s, after raising my children I started to travel and while I never camped, I still did everything with a backpack and two pairs of shoes, lol. Looks so wonderful and peaceful there at night, thanks for sharing.

    The first time I went solo camping, it was a backpack trip. I was 19; I’m 65 now. I have done other solo trips, by car as well as backpacking. Each one gave me something different to take away with me, sometimes very profound revelations. I have found it to be very worthwhile.

    Very nice video. Couple small tricks is to make the fire pit smaller. 12 inch round is fine for one person and dig out the pit 3 to 4 inches deep and push the dirt against the rocks. Holds the heat longer. The other trick for the sleeping pad is hang it upside down from the valves over the tent against the sun. The sunlight heat inflates it for you;)
    Also just a small grate can be placed over a portion of the fire and heats the water for making dinner. Just some old guy hacks)

    I've camped out in the Alabama Hills on 4 separate occasions and it's ALWAYS AMAZING. The place is just so awesome to hike around and I've told a handful of friends and co-workers about it. It has to be seen in person to really understand just how special that place is..... Good for you Catherine for solo camping, my last two camps were solo also. Thanks for the video.

      @@CatherineGregoryAdventures yes they do bring up fond memories Backpacking Camping Fishing with my father years ago. I still go up there and I love it. Saturday and Sunday I was watching my parents 85 and 80. I thought to just UA-cam the Sierras and Vedio of little Lake Valley popped up. Well Catherine my Dad Mom and I watched you for hours. My Dad was laughing at times and cried at seeing the beautiful. Wow thank you thank from the bottom of my heart. You really touched my Mom and Dad.

    Congratulations on your first solo camping trip. After one gets over the fear of backpacking alone, the next issue, and maybe more difficult for some, is learning to like yourself and enjoy you own company. There's less scheduling conflicts with solo backpacking and if the other person bails you can still go. Your night picture at 17:12 is off the scale beautiful. Really enjoyed this video!

    I've never gone on a solo back packing trip, but I've gone on a number of solo bike packing trips (overnight to a nearby lake). There is something really relaxing being on your own. With a group, the dynamics are much more complex and problematical. Groups are fun, for sure, but I like the simplicity of a solo trip, too. Bike packing has forced me to be a lot more careful with what I carry, so now I should try that with back packing! Your videos and photos are really nice. Very professional and clean. Thanks for sharing them with the rest of us! Carry on.

    Much more than solo camping: an awakening
    Find it odd how the mind works when all alone solo camping. I have found that I go into this zone of very alert thought, that can lead to peace and an occasional a
    odd over sensitized mild fear.....
    It's when you re-enter the norms of life that you finaly can understand what that peace or fear meant to you....
    And your longing to to do it over again ....

    Count me as one who really likes the quality of your videos. Thank you for taking the time to share your adventures. That was a very interesting question you posed. I guess mood has everything to do with how I like to spend my time in nature. As a guy, I enjoy the solitude of solo backpacking and car camping. Since my wife does not get into that, it is easy to get away. I found the solo trips gave me a chance to reset my thoughts about a variety of life issues, and, also to test equipment, food, etc. However, I also realized having a friend along would be desirable as well. I have found that I don’t sleep as well on solo backpacking trips when no one else is in the area. (Especially in areas where cell coverage is absent). Ironically, I have had more problems with things, such as critters, when car camping, than when solo backpacking. Go figure!

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures
      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  6 років тому

      Thanks for your comment Anthony. It's nice to have both options available. I do agree with what you had to say about solo trips. I always hear about bears hanging around the campgrounds in the Sierra. Almost every spot I've car camped at, I've been warned by the camp host about bear activity. It makes sense since it's a more condensed, populated spot with human food. lol

    • @AG-gk2pf
      @AG-gk2pf 6 років тому

      No bears. But, raccoons, a road runner, and the dreaded mice in the car! 3 mice! Worst sound ever to wake up to in a car. The sound of rustling from inside the car. Fortunately, I was able to capture them, 2 of the three survived to rustle another day. LOL!

    • @AG-gk2pf
      @AG-gk2pf 6 років тому

      I can handle mice. However, something like rats would be another story. LOL! Actually, mice can do a lot of damage to a vehicle. Mainly chewing on wiring, especially if the wire insulation is made from soy (as I have read), not to mention their poop. I have heard, though, that country mice are cleaner than city mice. But, that isn’t much consolation! Ha!

It's amazing what an adventure like this can do for one's soul and spirits. Great photography, too! BTW I love your hat. I have a very similar one that I picked up in Silverton, CO. If you ever get the chance take the Silverton Narrow Gauge train ride from Durango to Silverton. With your photography skills you will capture what I call God's backyard. You will also find incredible camp sites along the way.

      I had people tell me I didn't bring enough on this trip since I was technically car camping. lol I have the mind of a backpacker, so it actually didn't even occur to me other than the firewood. I knew I wanted a fire and there would be no wood here. Thank you on the hat. It's my favorite hat. I'd wear it backpacking if I could, but it's not very practical. I'd love to do a trail ride some day. That sound awesome. Thank you for watching and for the kind feedback on my photography.

    Hi Catherine! Great scenery! I almost headed to the Bristlecone Pine Forest (near Big Pine) to solo camp over Thanksgiving but got caught up in Santa Barbara days and rhythm. I enjoy solo camping and camping with friends. I hope to solo camp in the Alabama Hills over the winter holidays. This past September I solo camped above Mammoth/Coldwater area. I hiked up behind camp for my first Sierra Hike since having heart surgery 1.5 years ago. All went well and I am feeling healthy. This summer ( I am a teacher) I hope to camp throughout Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. Some adventures might be solo, others might be with friends. Either way the wild is calling for me to connect. Hello Catherine, nice car camping set up. You could have used a large beach umbrella to protect you from the sun. Somehow I missed this fine video. It may have been before I subscribed to your channel. Many old western movies and tv western series from the 50s were filmed in the Alabama Hills. You have become quite an adventurous outdoors person. Dryer lint from the clothes dryer with vaseline works very well also. When making cocoa don't forget the marshmallows. Please take care out there and always have fun. Congratulations on your first solo outing. 🤗

      Thanks for the tip for a fire starter Ronald. Yes...the Alabama Hills are quite unique and beautiful. I can see why it was a location for so many films.

    Hi Catherine. I thought I would chime in, since you asked for input. I really enjoy solo camping and backpacking. I've done several solo trips as long as two weeks. There is something about depending only on yourself for survival that is very empowering. It really builds self confidence and allows one to become one with the natural world. Cheers! and safe hiking!

    ME , MYSELF & I - Best camping buddies , except for my German Shepherd , he doesn't
    talk much but always great company and he's always on alert !
    Good job , your a brave girl. I have female friend that went solo Elk hunting in Utah about a month ago at 1am to get set up for a early start. She was miles away from anyone , no
    moonlight , hearing howls, no cell service , she lasted 1 hour, back to sleep in truck
    until dawn.

    Great adventure video, Catherine! It isn't the lightest accessory, but I recall REI designing that chair with backpacking in mind. But as you've mentioned, comfort is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to weight.
    Anyways, your video makes me want to check out that side of California again. Cheers!

    That's got to be such a neat landscape out there along the eastern flanks of the Sierras where that enchanted Mojave desert surrounding Death Valley rises up so dramatically to the snow capped high alpine Sierras beyond. Can't wait for an opportunity to get out that way myself for a visit, but I have so much here in Utah to still experience and discover too.

    Most always solo, I prefer...I drove to Alaska from So. Cal. last year hiking through most of N.P.s to north, drove down through Jasper, Lake Luise, and Banff in Canada, put 9300 miles on my car I did 75days trip to China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos alone then to hike Kjerag Bolten and the Pulpit Rock in Norway, went on to Island of Gotland and explored the Viking's stone Hendge" Stenar stones" in Sweden then to experience Christiana Hippie town in Demark past Sept. My next solo trip will be Africa in Jan. then in May next year I am going to hike to Himalaya base camp.
    I have so much Gopro's and photo shots to upload, have to learn how ....still....Age 71, challenging task I think.
    You done marvelous job. Thank you!!

    I live in Colorado, Love to fish Colorado/Wyoming. I ususally sleep in my Jeep, feel way more safe in it, have thought of tent camping but have not made that step yet, we have bears lol. I know the odds are a long shot but that is what enters my head when I'm on my trips, I usually go alone, hard to find someone to go along. I love to fish but I go for the Scenery and just getting away by myself, Trout live in beautiful places, love exploring new places.

    Love your videos! The Alabama Hills are an awesome place to camp solo, although it can feel pretty lonely at night. I spent some time there before my Mount Whitney summit a few years ago and have been planning to go back. I love getting out by myself for photography (especially for astrophotography) with no pressure to keep anyone else entertained. I recently started putting together videos of my hikes, but I’m not very comfortable in front of the camera. You are great at it by the way. :o). I’m looking forward to watching your next adventure!

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures
      @CatherineGregoryAdventures  7 років тому

      Thank you so much Maryann. It's taken awhile to feel any sort of comfort level in front of the camera. I still see scenes where I feel I look stiff. I've been making the videos now for over a year. I can see that I have gotten better with time. Good for you for summiting Whitney! That's on my bucket list. I can relate to what you said about being alone for photography. I'll take a look at your channel. Would love to see what you are doing. I am so glad to see some women participate in commenting on this video. I knew I had some female subs out there although I've had very little interaction. Thank you for your comment and welcome to my channel. I hope to see you comment more often. :)
