I was going to watch this on a PC screen but within the first minute or two decided it deserved much better. Folks do yourselves a favor and watch her videos on a big screen! If you're impressed watching on a small screen you'll be blown away on a good sized TV screen.
I lived in SoCal for almost 14 years and loved Catalina. You've reminded me how wonderful a place it is. Only 24 miles from the clutter and noise of L.A.
For those that are not photographers or videographers you may not fully appreciate the level of work and skill it takes to produce something like this. There are lots of high dynamic range shots that are very, very difficult to pull off even with the best of equipment. The amount of time spent editing is way more than people realize. Producing videos of this quality takes considerable effort. CG you're doing a great job!

You mesmorized me......I closed my eyes and got lost into the scenery. You definitely captured the "feeling" you get watching a California coastal sunset which cannot adequately be described. Loved the cactus...the birds...the sounds....the music...the bison...the campfires....the morning coffee ☕....your narration.....the views of and from the trail....and of course, as always, the the breakfast burrito and 🍔 lol. Thanks so much Cat!!!!!!!

Dearest Catherine, Nice to see have got back in the game. I am always happy when you are hiking with a friend on these long hikes. I used to live up in Rancho Palo Verdes for a year. It was beautiful. It over looked Catalina and as any one who likes it out side, I spent most of the year sleeping out on my deck. It was an old apartment complex, well maintained. It was off on the point by itself. I enjoyed watching the fishing boats out there and the cargo ships coming and going. You could here the bell off the point faithful do its diligence. It was high enough to be above the world war ll planes that flew out there on weekends. I remember the first night I was out there and I heard the peacocks, I woke up and thought I was somewhere else.LOL There was the lady who would walk her goats on ropes like dogs down to the park to eat the good grass. Gee I look back and that was somewhere between the late 90 and early 2000s. Where does the time go in a single life. Life is the wisdom from what you do, or the leap of faiths your soul takes. MOST people are so busy making a living, they for get to live. People spend most of their time waiting. There was the military, I had a career, was married and raised 4 kids, then there was retirement and other qwest. Each 1 seems like a different life time now. Lucky my kids live close and I see them often. As you know i am out in the Arizona Territories, I like that its more romantic. There are the times we go on our soul searches or as the natives call vision qwests, maybe each sojourn a little further a little deeper. To the point there seems like there is no return. You go out for a week and come out somewhere else only to find you have been gone for a year and 1/2.. You would actually find it hard to believe how many people are out there beyond the next turn or just down the road. They just went for a hike and found another place and time to live in. I have found a few on the big hike. They just thru what they thought they would need on there back and never returned to the main stream and maybe all the better for not. Well my friend the hour is late and tomorrow my son is coming for breakfast and off to the gun show and then a little fishing. So in closing dear friend sleep well, be safe, ponder the steps you have already taken and the ones you are about to, with a nice STRONG CUP OF COFFEE, IT'S GOOD FOR THE MINOR ACHES. I heard somewhere and i dont remember where. A women is like a tea bag, you have no idea how strong she is, until she is in hot water.TILL the next time, Dutch

Great video. I think you did a good job giving an overview of what the island and the trail looks like. I lived on the island in the early nineties and hiked and hunted all over it during that time. I’d like to add to your video for those inspired to do the trans Catalina trail that you went at probably the best time of the year. Summer months can be brutally hot on the island, and there are not a lot of fresh water sources most of the time. The trail is also very exposed and you are in the sun a lot. As far as buffalo go, they are big majestic creatures but give them a wide berth, especially if they have young. Oh and Catalina does have rattlesnakes and poison oak so best to stay on the trails.

As usual, thanks for the awesome video. I've been wanting to do this hike for a while. I've been on the island but never backpacking. Did you see any of the hundreds of feral cats? At night if you drive around a golf cart you will see them. A little tip, if you ever want to stay in a hotel on the island - don't. Instead rent a condo at Hamilton Cove. The prices are about the same as a hotel but you get all the luxuries of staying in a house and they even include golf carts with the rental.

    • @CatherineGregoryAdventures

Being an avid You Tube viewer and subscribed to over 300+ channels I seldom comment because I watch so many mostly in the evening in bed and just don't have time to comment all the time. I have commented a few times things in my heart about some videos so for me to continually comment on your videos is a very special compliment. I am enamored with the BEAUTY you are sharing. I have a coffee table book of our Nation's National Parks and right in the very front cover it shows the locations of all our National Parks. I immediately noticed that most of our Nation's National Parks are located in the Western and mid-western US. Having volunteered in many State Parks, I consider State and National Parks real treasures. You are very blessed to absorb yourself into these treasures. Your channel has quickly become my favorite! Unfortunately, many of the clips didn’t record audio since my mic was turned off, but still plugged into the camera. Live and learn. I do try and use calming and soothing music choices.

Used to anchor at Cat Harbor on the Pacific side at the Isthmus. Used to see those Bison come walking down the hill in a herd. There used to be a lot of wild boars on Catalina to keep the rattlesnake population in check. I remember that they had hunting trips for them back in the 70s. Yeah, rattlesnakes used to be a problem there. I haven't been there since the 80s, so not aware of the changes made. I know the Park service killed all the deer and Roosevelt Elk on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands, I'm surprised they didn't kill off the Bison since they don't belong there either, but Catalina isn't part of Channel Islands NP.
Sat at Cat Harbor once during a gale force storm. 20 foot breakers were coming into the harbor. Some guys tried to talk my dad into taking them off the Island as nothing was leaving, my dad told them that he'd do it, but it would cost $500 and that he doubted we'd make it. They said never mind. LOL
    Beautiful views, brought back memories.

@@CatherineGregoryAdventures Did you see any wild boar? I'd bet they hunted them out since their populations can get out of hand without hunting pressure.

Good use of hiking pole at the start. Are Leggings adequate attire for Bum Runs down steep hill sides, bet your glad they held together and you did not have to finish the trip “Bare Beamed and Butt Nagged”. Always like that line from Paint Your Wagon movie 🍿. Nice scenery on that last leg of the trip.

Dear Catherine, Hi, what a brilliant idea to hike Catalina Island, you're the boss. Did you know Jacques-Yves Cousteau (ocean explorer) inventor of the (SCUBA) (self contained underwater breathing apparatus), I think he called it an "aqualung", once said in Santa Monica, Ca. that his favorite place to dive, in all the places he dove around the world, was the back-side of Catalina Island, because of all the life there, ie: 400 lb black sea bass, 25 lb lobsters, green red purple abalones, etc. Unfortunately, after about 1973 it was all mostly gone. Today the waters around the island are a Preserve, as all of the coast of California should be as I see it, and the life is returning. That demonstrates my theory that if you leave the oceans alone the life will return fast. Also, can you please demonstrate on a video how you "fit" your backpack? I mean, your pack is full and must be heavy, but it looks so comfortable when you ware/walk with it. Happy Trails.

I did not know that about J. Cousteau. That’s awesome! I have had a couple of requests for a how I pack my backpack video, so I just might need to do that. :) Thank you!

@@CatherineGregoryAdventures Hi Catherine, so cool to hear from you; happy you found my little memory/story interesting. I was mostly wondering how you "fit" it to your body? Are there some secrets that you use with the waistband, shoulder straps, and other harnesses to get it to "sit" so comfortably looking. The pack looks full and heavy but you walk like it weighs hardly nothing? Thank You, and most Happy Trails.

What sections did you have to do water carries more than normal of two liters, or were you able to get water at the campsites? Sounds like you took 6 days to do the hike. Some of my fondest memories were a 10.8 mile race that followed the way you went up out of Avalon and came down past the campground in Hermit Gulch...I ran it 2 or 3 times years ago. My hubby and I also ran the Catalina Marathon from a Two Harbors to Avalon......I actually came home with a trophy for placing in my age group. When I raced the 10.8 miler, my hubby loved to run the 5k and would race our youngest son in it.....,we did race the 10k one year, but I did not like that course. We will have to go over and do the trail😀❤️

That’s awesome Cherie. We carried a couple liters between camps. Water was available at camp except for Parsons Landing. You can order bottled water to be delivered to that camp from the Two Harbors visitor center.

Great job on the video! I loved all the peaceful shots you got of the trail! I think we were there close to the same time (I was there Feb 29-March 4th) and I give you massive props for making it up that steep section between Two Harbors and Parsons with your backpack. We used a gear haul service and had only day packs and that section was still super tough. I have a video coming of the trail soon as well but I just stumbled on this and wanted to tell how good it was.

Grew up over looking Catalina Island... made many trips there over the years... Hiked across the island only once... was always ready to say " we didn't see the 30 "No Tresspassing" signs... Wrigley family(gum and Chicago Cubs owner) owned pretty much everything but Avalon, I think... Thank you so much.... brought me back to my childhood... Hope to do this hike in the near future!!!
