Notes: • The nafs / ego / desire is the biggest enemy. Shaitan works in tandem with it. • Arrogance and superiority are a result of the nafs, which was the first crime. • Allah (swt) makes 7 x oaths in Surah Ash-Shams (Surah 91) to drive and emphasise the point that the nafs is extremely dangerous. • Work on your proximity to Allah (swt) in this world and in the Hereafter and aim for endless success. • Success is achieved in the following order; o Tawba - repentance and shedding of sins. o Tazkia - purification of the nafs. o Taqwa - Praying and living as if Allah (swt) is watching you. • Unless controlled, the nafs will control the heart. • Signs of a diseased heart; o Gives preference to the adornment of the duniya over the aakhira. o The eyes and / or heart does not weep. o Forgetful of Allah (swt). o Doing things for Allah (swt) is painful and frightening. • What’s the difference between nafs and Shaitaan? o Nafs is the internal enemy while Shaitaan is the external enemy. o Shaitaan is clever and extremely sly however nafs is pathetic and stubborn. Shaitaan will attempt to plant different ideas, whereas the nafs is a persistent nagging to commit specific sins. Shaitaan and nafs are akin to a dog and child. • You cannot totally eradicate desires (nafs). However, replace evil desires with good and pure ones that focus on the Hereafter as opposed to the duniya. • Focus on concentrated and effective dhikr to curb desires and get closer to Allah (swt).
