The Extremely Troubled History of Alan Wake

By 2010, players had their choice of heroes in action-adventure games. From space marines and treasure hunters to assassins and powerful mages, it seemed there were few adventurous professions the medium had yet to explore. But on the heels of creating two projects with a Punisher-like detective turned vigilante at the helm, Remedy Entertainment set about crafting a character whose occupation wasn’t exactly video game-friendly-a novelist.
In writer Alan Wake, the Max Payne studio designed an inventive new protagonist, one whom audiences could more easily relate to. It took a long while for Remedy’s vision to fully form, though, as at the start of its production, Wake had far more in common with the company’s previous leading man. Yet, the iterative process of a lengthy development cycle saw the writer evolve into the dynamic figure many a gamer has come to know and love.
To see their vision through to completion, Remedy’s developers were forced to follow the instructions they set for players in Alan Wake’s nightmarish journey through darkness-follow the light. Still, the path forward proved difficult to navigate as an open-world game took on a linear structure, all while the studio altered its managerial approach more than halfway through production. Out of this rather tumultuous period came an instant cult classic, which fans remain eager to see return in some capacity.
This is the history of Alan Wake.

Remedy is one hell of a company...original and super creative.
One of the few left unfortunately.
@@Neb_Raska Sadly.... I couldn't agree more.
@LAW I keep trying to like there games but I never do. After control I give up.
@LAW felt the complete opposite, it's probably one of my favorite games of theirs and definitely my favorite game of 2019.
@LAW man, i really dont know what you talking about....that game is so unique and for those who like The X Files and paranormal stuff is a great game...they just dont shove things on our faces...but maybe its just not yout type of game...but im telling you...Control is a great game, even more when you find about the Alan Wake references and links....but Control is not a game to be played in a hurry....maybe if you play another time, taking your time, will be more immersive than the last time....i always give a game 2 chances ...your mindset and knowledge about the material is important...
The last line of the game still haunts me: "It's not a lake. It's an ocean."
I yelled at the screen when that happened. :p
I love that line.
I am too
Does that mean the Darkness problem is way worse than what Alan thinks?
@@lenniecarter1242 Aye.
I remember it took ages to release this game. In gaming foruns people called Alan Wait.
@@freewheeler8924 boy u dumm
@Sean Avery seems like you both can't read nor write
@Sean Avery he was saying that when people were waiting for the release of Alan wake, they called the game in chat forums "Alan Wait" because of how long it took. Hope this clears things up for your peanut brain
@Sean Avery you said in your first comment why he would ask "why the game took so long to make" but he never even asked that. Youre confused af lmao
@DrugsMakah_07 you have to be the lowest iq person in existence to not see they were replying to someone else
"Find the lady of the light gone mad with the night, that's how you reshape destiny"
Who could forget Alan Wake's incredible soundtrack? And that concert fight with Poets of the Fall playing in the background? What a game.
CHILDREN OF THE ELDER GOOOOD!!
Indeed. That concert scene was a huge high point. Control also has some similarly powerful musical moments.
@@JonathosDX Well...
'TAKE, CONTROL!!'
Poe's Haunted is in the game too, that is one of my all time favorite songs!
This game had so great graphics for a 2010 game
Other than the face animations, the game still looks gorgeous.
The interplay between the lighting and the fog in Alan Wake still makes many modern games look inferior.
The atmosphere was insanely well done.
I remember seeing this game back in 2014, it looked so good back then. Right now when some people look at this game it kinda got dated for them. For me this game dated like a good wine. It's visual artstyle is still good, and for me game still looks beautiful. Seeing thoes countries/forests in this game is still a pretty sight.
The PC version looks still so, so great even today
@@wes8723 Thats Right.
Every time i see Sam Lake all I can hear is “ It’s Payne get him! “
"It's Payne! He's coming up the stairs, kill him!!"
Payne to the Max!
Whack him! 😤
@@psychotropictraveler514 You're killing me. Did you make that up yourselves, or did you get some wino downstairs to come up with it? Don't answer that, a rhetorical question.
I got this game day one when it released alongside Red Dead. It was such a great time to be a gamer.
and we thought games like that would just keep coming out. sad
When the game came out I got it for the 360 and completely disliked it. To be fair, the forced German Dub was an abomination no one should ever experience. But this wasn't my only complain back then. It was a good decision to play it in it's original language again a few weeks back. Really love the abstract story. From a Gameplay standpoint, it's still not very entertaining. You spend too much time fleeing through some pitch black forests and doing nothing else for about 3 chapters. It got better from there but the troubled creation of this game is always there. Still would love to see a well planned Sequel. But I will dig in into Control first when the next gen update is out. Would like to see that Remedy will ditch the greedy jerks from 505 Games.
not if you were a PC gamer loooool
yes its so shit right now /s
That was the Golden Age.
It was almost instinctual that I clicked on this. I guess you could say I had no _control_ of myself

There's a remedy for that.
0:48 "One who players could more easily relate to"
True story, in the literal sense. I had always been fond of writing myself, but for the longest time I kept it to short stories, as I guess I didn't have the confidence to write longer novels and keep a long a focused narrative going. But when a friend back in 2010 lended me this game, I saw narration in videogames performed in an immersive and engrossing way I never had before, and thus, Alan Wake was the final push I needed, to pull myself together, and become a full fledged writer myself.
My first fantasy novel (in a now planned trilogy with the second hitting Danish store shelves next spring), being inspired by the game, in which a young boy acquires the mythical Heart of Light (instead of using a flashlight like Alan), and then has to grow with these powers of light, using them to defeat the approaching forces of darkness, and ultimately the dark lord himself, along with the friends he meets along the way.
Congrats! I'm really proud of you. Hope your books find a way into my country someday
I wish you good luck with your book! I hope you have a successful career as a writer!
This game in my opinion is criminally underappreciated. The farm house of thor and odin stands out as the best part of the game. Wish to see more of this series or it's developer in the future.
The big Concert fight was awesome ahahah Barry is a legend
I love how he's reading the names of the Patreon donors and he had to read "milkshake" in a serious tone.
I'm serious about milkshakes and idk anyone who isn't
At least it's not "Dickhead"
Remedy is one of the few studios that literally changes the art form everytime they release a new game. We need more studios like them
I ended up getting Alan Wake in its release year for my birthday. It is still easily in the Top 5 of Video Games I have ever played.
Alan Wake is one of the most underrated gems of all time. If we ever get a sequel, my life is complete.
Your life will be complete, Alan Wake 2 announced!
One of my all time favorite games.
Remedy, never stop.
It’s absolutely awesome that remedy came out and got to make the sequel to the first game.
I'm so happy they got to realize their vision and gave us the masterpiece that is Alan Wake 2
Still amazed on how Remedy decided to reimagine the identity of the game from Open World to Linear. Definitely a stressful time for them that resulted in success down the road. Keep being creative Remedy!
This is THE MOST UNDERRATED game of the last 20 years imo. Sam Lake and Remedy are awesome!
Specs ops the line is most underrated
I don't know about underrated. I think a better description would be "undermentioned" lol
@@arhamkhalid5990 rofl it was mediocre as fuck
@Im ForeverMarked Yes to GTA6 and AW2. But where would Max Payne 3 or Dead Space 4 go though?
Sleeping Dogs, Alan Wake and Spec Ops the Line are the most underrated game of the last 20 years
I have this downloaded, can’t wait to check it out. This series has introduced me to so many different games lost in time. I love it. Thank you GVMERS!
Just finished this game recently for the first time and loved every bit.
I am sold by Remedy, i love all thier games. Cant wait for whatever they do next though i do hope it is a sequel to either Control or Wake
holly s**t...I finished playing this game 2 days ago , and I was wondering how the story will reach its end because remedy has teased a sequel in Control . Idc what anyone thinks , this game was a treat from start to finish . Also , the atmosphere and soundtrack of this game is just brilliant .
When that don’t fear the reaper plays 🔥
@@SneakerFetish420 yup
I´m close to finish it. It´s been an awesome game so far. My fav scene was when you were fighting baddies on the Norse stage, fireworks flying and an awesome rock tune blasting. Dude, that was epic.
@@volcanickjoe08 great part of the game you will still have the 2 dlcs to complete though unless you’re on them already
I missed this one first time around and just played it with the remaster. What a great game. Holds up so well even today and I would love to see another Alan Wake. It’s too bad they only did the 2 dlc episodes and didn’t include American Nightmare as well. Going back to 30 fps in this world might be rough, but I may have to do it.
about alan being perceived as unlikable at 14:49 - it was at some point confirmed that that was on purpose. they wanted to give him depth as a character, make him more human and less perfect, show the contrast between the shining star alan wake and his violent, depressed tendencies he shows behind the scenes.
great video!
One of the most underrated games ever made.
Personal story: I got my paycheck and decided to treat myself. I had no idea what game to get at GameStop so I started alphabetically.
I came upon Alan Wake and looked at the back of the box. I hadn’t heard a thing about this game. For all I knew it sucked. But I was intrigued and decided to take a chance.
Best instinct purchase in my life.
Alan Wake was my favorite game for a long time. It's still one of my absolute favorites. It is like a mix of Twin Peaks, Stephen King, and Remedy's own special magic. I wasn't really big on American Nightmare as Alan Wake's combat isn't what kept me coming back to the game. I love the extreme atmosphere, the serene idyllic setting that felt like Washington or Oregon, the story that wasn't just another, "I want revenge on my enemies!" story. The psychological aspects really connected to me as a writer myself.
"But no matter what the future holds,
it's evident that there still exists a sliver of light
lingering in the darkness
waiting to be followed."
I will never forget my day 1 purchase of Alan Wake on xbox. The boat intro was breath taking, such a beautiful graphics and I love the tv series intro's and outro's followed by amazing music.
I was late to the Alan wake party but glad I arrived. That game is a real underated gem. The Alan wake AWE expansion for control is fantastic!!
your voice somehow feels like home every time a new video comes out, good stuff
This guys voice is perfect for these gaming videos. Much like how David Attenborough is perfect for the nature videos. Just perfection!
The research that must goes into these videos is astounding
I got introduced to Remedy with control, it blew me away, and with the dlc connecting control with Alan wake, I wanted to play the game....I wasn’t disappointed
GVMERS these videos rule. I wish you’d post more frequently but take all the time you need because your videos are QUALITY.
I loved Alan Wake. The setting in the dark forests of the Pacific Northwest was absolutely brillant
They absolutely nailed the atmosphere for horror. When things get dicey and the wind blowing the trees like crazy…. it was just brilliant
Alan Wake 2 was announced this day, Dec. 09 2021! Yes!
Hands down most underrated gaming channel in history. I LOVE you dudes
Alan Wake is the only game that I ever played back-to-back-to-back.
You have a fantastic voice. It's a perfect combination of soothing and engaging. I probably would have subscribed even if your content wasn't interesting, lol.
I can watch this legendary video while waiting on Thanksgiving food. Truly blessed
Happy thanksgiving!
Hope you enjoy your food
"Microsoft jumps in with helpful suggestions" haha good one
Oh your stuck in production? How about we make this console exclusive?
-Hell yeah, this will solve all our problems!
Do any of you guys remember Bright Falls that live action prequel series.
I do, I rewatched it recently
Yes. I was quite surprised that it wasn't mentioned
No
I didn't know that existed but I'm about to blast through em.
Forgot all about that.
Remedy is one of the best of today's video game devs. Control was such a fantastic game, after finish the Alan Wake remaster yesterday on my PS5, I just started my 3rd playthrough of Control. The parallels between the two games is absolutely brilliant.
Ahh, I remember I was around 13 at the time and was glued to my seat the entire time playing this. It was and is one of the very few games that I very much remember and enjoyed from start to finish.
I played so many 1st person shooting games before but Half-Life, Max Payne and Alan Wake proved that story-telling can really make the difference for the player.
I absolutely ADORE Alan Wake. The spin off “American nightmare” is superb and the fact he is intertwined into CONTROL is such a delight. It’s a shame that Alan Wake 2 never came to be. The test footage is so promising. I will add that the Max Payne trilogy is brilliant too. Number 3 is underrated.
Good thing Alan Wake II is actually coming then now, huh? A great time to be a fan
Alan Wake was release more that 10 years ago and the game still love better than at lot of newest games
Remedy is the one and only company i would ever trust to pre-order their games because i always know i'm gonna get something amazing, unique, fresh, creative and original.
Still can't believe we gonna get Alan Wake 2
Now this was really good. I really liked it, although it was somewhat shorter than I hoped, but it wasn't lacking in content.
I didn't realise it had dlc and it's free. thanks playing now.
What I would not give for a multiplatform remaster of Alan Wake! The game always intrigued me. Thank you for another great video GVMERS!
It's wonderful to see that this game is _still_ talked about.
Remedy is an amazing studio. The first Max Payne is one of my favorite games of all time great storytelling one of those games I always revist on during december on my ps2.
What a brilliant documentary. Thanks for making this.
I love Alan Wake. Thanks for featuring it in your channel.
Can we get a vid on the suffering and the suffering ties that bind? I feel like those games don’t get the credit they deserved
I'm having a hard ass time trying to get those two games to play properly (or at all)
Something to do with MTV screwing up hard between the first and second game.
@@dukemagus what cho mean?

@@SloppyToffee agreed. Two great games
Still one of the most unnerving games I’ve played, right up there with Silent Hill 2...dripping with atmosphere
Wow. First video in a while. Good to see you back
I still hope this game will get a proper sequel and ending. *Alan Wake’s journey through the night will continue*
I loved every single one of Remedy games, even Quantum Break, yes the gameplay was not that innovative but the story was awesome. I still remember the day I bought Alan Wake it was August and I was just coming off vacation and I bought three games that day, one of them was Fable III and I thought that Alan Wake was going to be blown away by Fable III, oh boy how wrong was I. Alan Wake is still one of my favorite if not my favorite game of all time, everything is perfect in this game the story, the gameplay, the voice acting. Me and my brother play it every summer every year in honor of the great developer Remedy.
Wow what a nice thanksgiving day surprise for me never thought you guys would cover this game this game was amazing.
When I watch your videos I feel like I'm watching the history channel gaming edition! 😆

We now have a proper sequel to the game and it not only looks amazing I've heard the game is as well
GVMERS is back! Always a treat when they upload 🥰
Thank you for covering alan wake . It’s one of my all time favorite games of all time and the sole reason for getting a Xbox 360 at this time . When will we get a true sequel ?🙈
I didn’t even like the game, but I LOVE this channel! So I watch and support! Great work as always!
I thought people forgot about this game. Good work GVMERS
Alan Wake is one of the very few games I have ever purchased that did not disappoint in some major way. It is a lot of fun to replay and go for completion on the harder settings too.
Really been waiting for this video! btw do you list your sources somewhere I'd like to read more about the history of remedy?

This is as high as dramatic narrative in a computer game goes! Love it!
New setup looks well. Good job Mersh 👏
Amazing game played it 2years ago. 10/10 ,still have it on my old 360 ❤️
Alan wake is so amazing. I play the game once a year. And American nightmare. Control was so under rated.
My man, your videos are the best!!! Keep it up!!!
I think this is one of the best game I've ever played on my x360, I got this game and Forza Motorsport for free when I bought my console. And wow man, the gameplay was kinda like surrealist type horror movie game which is why I was so deeply impressed by it. It even had twilight zone miniseries reference throughout the whole game. Definitely Remedy's best game yet imo, better than control and quantum break or it's because I just love this type of game genre idk.
I really liked all the information signs, radio broadcast's and the Night Springs - tv shows. They gave great balance to the craziness :)
alan wake will always be one of my favourite games
still hoping for alan wake 2
I just popped in to say Remedy has blown my mind with Control and I can't wait to see what they do next. Oh and this Alan Wake retrospective is awesome.
Just yesterday, I finally bought the steam version, sold my 360 version on ebay, then this video came out the same day. Kinda spooky ngl
Seriously why is this channel not over a million subs?
I really loved finding a new episode of 'Night Springs' to watch at random times while playing. Although I have to admit it took me a long time to realize the title was a play on words of 'Bright Falls'
I still have my collectors edition that looks like a book. One of my favorites on my shelf
Alan wake was an amazing game im still shocked theres no sequel
The thing about the game CONTROL, is that the entire thing is an Alan Wake story... He pretty much says so in some of the files in the main game, as well as the DLC... There is also a recording of Jessie in therapy talking about her favorite poet Thomas Zane even though they insist there is no such person... Alan, in one of the segments, says he had to write and create a character SO powerful and confident, and that that's the only way he can escape the darkness... That stuff blew me away...
Gimme that GVMERS take on Fable/Lionhead please
It's an interesting game, just very much reminds of Twin Peaks
It took a page out of many places, and everything felt awesome. It felt great to be able to get all those references.
I LOVE Alan Wake, seriously underrated.
My favourite horror experience on the highest difficulty the breaks in actions from the lights was desperately needed at certain stages
One of the best games i ever played i have it on PC think i will play it again at some point! I remember the atmosphere and music was brilliant in Alan Wake and the shooting felt great too hope we get another game in the future
Such great content. Thank you so much for creating videos like these. Keep up the awesome work
Just saw this video not long ago but going to watch it again now and am excited for the remaster coming this October
Alan Wake was incredible, it deserves a sequel.
"Theres an old tale wrought with mystery of Tom the poet and his muse..."
Perfect timing on this one. Considering we just got the remaster a few months after this.
Alan Wake and the games connected to it are amazing. Control was a great game too
This is still one of my favorite games I have ever played. I am so bummed it didn't gain the traction it deserved
Most pirated games on the 360. Heard was 1million copy.
And now we have ourselves a remake! Hopefully this leads to a fully fledged sequel
Remaster actually.
Remedy is by far one of my favorite developers. Just played thru Alan wake again while in lockdown. Miss that game. We need another one. Than theres control. Control is one of the most underrated game's ever. Such a great story and environment. If u havent played thru control than stop whatever your doing and do it now.
