Making open world games is far from easy. The number of assets necessary to fill them is colossal. The amount of testing required to polish them is unthinkable. And unless your name is Sam or Dan Houser, whatever you make is almost always going to live in the shadow of Grand Theft Auto’s scope and brand power - unless you find a unique way to counter its supremacy.
For a brief period in the early 2010s, Sleeping Dogs was such a contender. The culmination of nearly five years of work at Vancouver-based developer United Front Games, Sleeping Dogs managed to win over players’ hearts by being modest and focused; instead of trying to be a better Rockstar game than Rockstar’s own offerings, it concentrated on nailing a setting, tone and style of combat that they had never explored before - and succeeded impressively in doing so.
Yet what was perhaps most remarkable about it was the fact that it got released at all. For the penultimate year of its development was marked by a major fracas; one that would have immediately killed it had an unexpected publisher been any less kind, its team any less passionate, and the experience it had to offer any less compelling.
This is the history of Sleeping Dogs.

I remember putting in hours and hours every day after school into Sleep Dogs. The designs, the characters, the atmosphere, the quest lines, the story, the setting, the gameplay, hell, even the color pallet, Sleeping Dogs is a near perfect blend of all those, it just sucked me right in. I still go back into the game every now and then just to free roam and beat up some thugs using awesome, addictive and well mapped combos and attack patterns/skills. I'm probably biased, but i'll give it a solid 8.9/10. Would never forget this game.

TerrasClip After three months all key region locks on Steam expire. For example: you can buy an uncut Wolfenstein key in Germany and activate it on Steam. After that, Steam will kindly remind you that the game you‘ve just activated is not available in Germany and that you won’t be able to download or play the game (which is true for the first three months). However, after the region lock expires (=after three months) you will be able to download and play the game as if there was never a problem.

@@kummakummakummakummakummac8606 GTA Online is the only thing which would clearly make GTA V the better game, but purely comparing single player would make the argument much closer.
The story for Sleeping Dogs was kick ass and most of the characters were better and more likeable than the ones in GTA V because none of them were amoral superhumans with super abilities like in GTA V.
While Sleeping Dogs had good looking cars, the guns, driving and customization were better in GTA V, but Sleeping Dogs probably had the better story, voice acting and hand to hand combat. While GTA V had a huge map, Sleeping Dogs had the better overall theme than GTA V because it really felt like the real Hong Kong - characters spoke in Cantonese, things like rubbish bins, taxis and double deckers made it way more immersive than San Andreas and Los Santos, both of which are completely fictional.
Sleeping Dogs did some things better than GTA V. The argument over Sleeping Dogs and GTA V single player should be considered a stalemate, which is impressive considering Sleeping Dogs only runs on a single disc, while GTA V on the Xbox 360 needed installations and long loading times, I'm sure everyone can agree it's a damn shame there's no sequel for Sleeping Dogs, at least for now.

Sleeping Dogs is like V:TM-B. Whenever someone mentions it, someone re-installs it. I just reinstalled both. o.o

While Gta got bigger and more streamlined Sleeping Dogs made me love the crime openworld game genre once again. I still think Sleeping dogs was more fun than GTA 5. Maybe Watchdogs 3 will help me ease the itch I have for these types of games. Thank you so much for this video, subscribed!

The fact that this video has twice as many views as Dragin Age: Inquesition in half of the time is revealing enough to how influential and loved the game is!
