Here I add a raw-edge applique tree to the MINI-LANDSCAPE QUILT that I've been making on my new blog, Why Shouldn't It Be Beautiful? I free-motion quilt two fabrics, a purple-brown batik and an upside-down yellow calico. I am still unsure about adding a tree to the larger landscape quilt. So far no one has thought it needs one. In the meantime, here's this...
BTW, in my latest blog post, I spend some time discussing how to study elements such as this tree for your landscape and other pictorial quilts. I also touch on composition and talk about demoing (auditioning) various possible additions using thumbnails, etc. You can check that out here: www.zazusstitchart.com/2016/10...

I think one of the gift projects I do soon should include a very small, manageable raw-edge element and FMQ practice. What do you think? And I'm surprised how cute that little tree turned out. Thanks.

Lovely work as always. Which brand and model of machine do you use, and what needle size would you recommend please? Also are there any fabrics which through experience you would not recommend for a raw edge project? Thanks in advance.

I am planning videos to address many of your questions, but here are the short answers: 1) Bernina 950 Semi-Industrial (no longer being manufactured; retailed about $3500 a decade ago, not recommended for beginners or casual sewing); 2) I use a 14/90 needle most of the time; 3) I use mostly quality 100% quilters' cotton. Anything else that I plan to incorporate gets tested in advance. Very loose weaves may respond poorly to washing. Happy Sewing!

Lovely work, do you use the calico for your background/foundation fabric too?

I actually used a striped quilting fabric for the backing, and a couple of fabrics for the foundation. You can see what I did here: www.zazusstitchart.com/2016/09/14/mini-landscape-quilt-pattern-and-tutorial/
