Rob adds a little pizzaz to a landscape scene by layering extra pieces of batting and machine quilting. He uses Duck Bill Applique Scissors, Machingers Quilting Gloves, and a Sew Slip mat. Learn how to add a flange border.

I absolutely love Man Sewing. I just came across this video while learning about trapunto quilting. I have found a dinosaur panel that this technique is just perfect for. Of all the videos I have researched this is by far the best one for trapunto. Mr. Rob you are the best!!

I am a beginner quilter, and I was so happy to hear your comment about moving the quilt while quilting. I am on a domestic machine and sometimes can't see what I am doing if I don't turn the quilt. I always felt I was doing something wrong. Now I know it is okay as long as I stop and the needle is down!
I purchased this panel just before Christmas for the love of the scene. I was very excited when I found your video tutorial. So much so that I have since called the quilt shop to hold 4 more panels for me. This is a new technique for me to try on a panel I love. Thank You for sharing !!

Your explanation of how and why to choose certain areas and enhance them with thread color, flange on the border and trapunto was so helpful. The only trapunto I knew about was sewing around the area and then opening the fabric from the back and stuffing added loft batting then stitching that opening back closed! This was great to see a layering of loft first and the effect it creates. Loved it, nice tutorial ❣️ Thank you!

I picked up a panel 2 days ago with intent to make a wall hanging for my niece tomorrow. Came across this vid today (and never heard of Trapunto before!) feels so meant-to-be to find out about this method. You are a gem!
Love this type of quilting and yes, there are lots of very beautiful quilt panels out there. Rob, get yourself a pair of bent embroidery scissors for cutting those tight cutting areas of the batting.

Ron, this video on trapunto could not have come at a better time. I am actually working on a fabric panel with flower arrangements in flower vases. I know that I will be doing this to highlight the vases but sounds like I should include some of the flowers. Than you. I love watching your tutorials. Keep sharing.

Love your technique ! I did one years ago, by hand, Just something to do while watching t.v. I hope to try machine trapunto but I only have a regular OLD sewing machine (Kenmore from 1960) I did mine without even knowing trapunto had a name! I just "winged it"- your video was most informative. thanks.

So pretty! I've added it to my list of sewing projects. I've seen trapunto before, but not for a long time. I do need to try it. And if you want snow, we have it! Forget the mountains and come on to Ohio! We sure do have snow here. Right now, at 7am, it's minus 5 degrees in my area. And we have the added bonus of Ice Fishing on Lake Erie! The fishing shanties will be popping up all over very soon! I'll be in my Warm sewing room all winter, but you can try fishing out on the ice! Brrr!!!

I’ve done trapunto work by hand, but not using free motion quilting. I love the look. As I have several panels waiting for inspiration, this technique would be a great idea for at least one of them. If all goes well I may just get some UFO projects completed. Thank you again, Rob👏🏻👍🏻
Trapunto usage of batting I’ve been doing awhile for my appliqués sometimes doubled plus sandwich batting, but this is another great example of it being used for scenery! Love the panel with the yellow border and the duck bill scissors too. Also your quilting in the water is very interesting! Thanks so much for a great easy example!

To Lisann, for highlighting the snow, I would use the clear "holographic" thread. It is clear but with a colored (red, blue, green and sometimes gold) shimmer that pics up light and reflects it without changing the colors beneath. Great idea, I did not think about that until you asked how!

Beautiful job! It's so nice to learn some new skills, and so nice to see tutorials involving panels. I've seen so many lovely panels but, being fairly new to quilting, I never really knew how to work with them. Thank you so much for instruction and inspiration! I enjoyed watching "except for" you talk to fast for an old woman. I have "A lot" of Horse Panels that would look beautiful doing this way!! But I think that I'm along way from being able to do this. And I have never heard of "Trapunto" until this video. I would like to someday try this method but I haven't conquered the free motion quilting yet. God Bless

Hi Anne. It's possible to slow the video down by clicking on the three dots in the upper right hand corner of the video. Then select playback speed which will give you different options for speed. You could try 0.75x to start. Hope that helps!

I have questions. 1- when you do the extra batting for puffiness, you put it in behind the panel and sew around the scene part you want puffy, then cut out around it. You just have the panel over the batting and sew with the batting down on the machine (bottom of the sewn piece)? That doesn’t cause any problem? And 2 - when you switched threads (from the blue to the yellow) what in the world did you do? You said you tied it off (new yellow to old blue) but skipped right over that whole good hint step. I love this quilt, and have several I look forward to doing this with as I, too, Love panels!

I just started watching your tutorials, Rob, they are great! It is not clear to me what you did here. After cutting away the first batting around the church, trees and snow, did you add another layer of batting with the backing? I get that "Trapunto" means wanting certain parts of the quilt to stand out, but would that mean that the rest of the quilt doesn't have batting, at all? Thanks for your enthusiasm in quilting and sewing!
Hi, I'm a newbie to trapunto..I just completed the initial trapunto with batting & now am adding batting & backing and doing 2nd layer of trapunto. My question is how to add frame to the panel to make a large quilt since the panel is already backed? Thank-you
Hey Rob, ? about the batting! Materials list calls for Quilter’s Dream Poly. & Quilter’s Dream Cotton. Not sure where to use each one🥴!
