The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

No miming, no auto tune, just raw talent
miming?
@@meanieeheart4236 Miming as in lip synching to a pre-recorded track.
I love how he forgot his own lyrics for a second and that he laughs as the crowd goes wild. It's adorable and makes me laugh.
You should check out the ‘68 Comeback Special, in particular the first song of the show, Heartbreak Hotel. Elvis made forgetting the lyrics the highlight of the song.
It’s obvious that Elvis was so good and so loved that he could do no wrong!
@@tommyk6719 I think I will. Thank you.
I think he was pretending to forget them, to make them laugh. :)
@@jillkjv3816 he was known for forgetting lyrics. He would have people in the crowd with posters with the words to the song on them. I've seen him pull a piece of paper mid song from his pocket as well
"Somebody"...
He's so natural in this performance, at ease, forgets the words but plows through, laughs in the middle of phrases and still his voice sounds like a recording! Love it! No one like him!
Love the lyric flub
Best part of the video! With "singers" nowadays, that would have messed up the lip-sync track.
He can get away with anything because he’s a genius.
FOR REALS
He didn't forget anything lol. The band missed their cue. Hence "somebody"
Let's face it, Elvis was probably the best looking male singer of the 20th century (and 21st). Yes, he had a great voice and charisma by the ton. However, the way he could "work" a song was magic. The Jordanaires were the perfect backup vocals. It is doubtful we will ever see the likes of an Elvis again.
Another Elvis would be cool, but then the world probably wouldn’t be able to handle losing another one!
This performance just shows how good he could sing both high and low notes
He had a gallon of oil in his hair. But he’s still the KING
kidfromdaheights yes he is, but it was ACTUALLY a gallon of pomade
This song proved that, yes. Along with Heartbreak Hotel
Yes!

He OWNED that stage. He had talent and presence far beyond his 21 yrs. What a truly amazing talent.
I agree owned it, and definitely had wisdom beyond his years. Maybe because he was with G-D, always angels guiding him. Such a beautiful man. He left us far too soon🤬🤬🤬
Im so amazed at his presence. He's 21 but he's so polished, he's stage presence is that if someone with decades of experience. Every little movement seems so perfect. In 1956 there wasnt any singers on the planet with half of his charisma. Its crazy that he was doing this in the mid 50s
❤Мой обожаемый Элвис, проникает в душу непринужденно❤❤❤❤❤❤
I saw the Jordanaires in Poole 1991 ,my grandparents were staying at the time,my grandad heard them rehearsing didn't see but he could hear
Elvis managed to be known all over the world without leaving the United States. his concert in Hawaii, 1.5 billion viewers. Elvis is incomparable. he didn't need a lot of pyrotechnic effects, the effect was him.
He didnt leave the US because of his manager Tom Parker, he was an illegal alien, if he left the US he wouldn't have got back in..
I saw Elvis in concert way back in 1956. He didn't need any gimmicks. It was just him and we all loved him.
Me too! I was at Russwood Park.
Must be nice...
Oh my goodness! Lucky you! If only I had a time machine.
@@gaylejones4965 Wow ...!!
Your lucky...it must have been so amazing to see him perform live..
I was 10 and already loved Elvis! Now almost 78 and still love him! Nobody like him! 😊
I saw him on Ed Sullivan and fell in love with him ... I was 8 ... I’m 76 now and have loved him forever.
Elvis got a great sense of humour. His performance is so naturally playful, fun and infectious. Inspiration.
The whole performance was a send-up - but still great!
Damn, 2024, and he still blows away anything that is today. Such magnetism and so natural, and his voice, WOW !
Ed Sullivan one of the few shows where the performers actually sang live.
Johnny Cash Show
@@tex1254 - Yes and also Burt Sugarman's Midnight Express.
They always do it live on letterman and conan if they're real bands. Only lame popstars sing to a track
Compare to the crap tv shows of today
@Quintus Horatius Flaccus - Sullivan asked Morrison to change the lyric "come on baby light my fire" to come on baby make it better- Jim agreed but then ignored the request and sang the song as written. Ed was not happy. Sullivan also banned The Rolling Stones because Mick refused to change the lyric of "Let's Spend The Night Together".
So damn good looking, and the charisma he had was out of this world.
ABSOLUTELY WAS. Saw him twice in concert
@@elainemorein3313 wow, how old are you now?
@@sonnom6668 I am now 81 yrs old. Not too old to remember & appreciate the # 1 phenomenon that happened to the Music world. He was & is Unequaled by Anyone, & will remain forever. He is the Most loved man, ( 2nd only to Jesus Christ) who ever walked the Earth. When Elvis died, there were thousands of people from all over the Globe, traveling to One Destination, Memphis, Tennessee. To Graceland. And all were Heartbroken to lose this magnetic personality, entertainer, who spent his life for his fans & Helping other people. He was a humble human being in spite of his Fame. He loved people & missed the personal contact he wanted. He neglected his Health to please his fans & Support the leaches that worked for him & pay Col. Parker's gambling debts. I have many collectibles & many hard cover books ( all given to me by friends & family). They are priceless & I have to decide what to do with them before I am gone. Have 1 daughter & 1 granddaughter. Dont think they would cherish them as I have. Will consider selling them at some point. Being 81 doesn't mean your life is over. I am still very cognitive & worked until I was 66. Both my parents were in their 90's. Mothers mind was Very sharp, but Dad had dementia. So- my chances are 50-50, but I am fine now. I could send you some pictures of collectibles if you'd like to see them, to your Messenger. Didnt mean to write a novel but on the subject of Elvis, I could. Thanks for the response. Even men would look at him and think
Damn he’s handsome
They say that he was very shy in school. So he forced himself to learn public speaking. He is still practicing this before each of his songs on the Ed Sullivan show. Rubbing his hands and nervous as hell. But he did it. Well done Elvis!
Vedo le tue immagini dopo tanti e una grande emozioni sei stato unico
We played this at my grandfathers funeral 3 weeks ago. We grew up in the 80s and 90s listening to endless Elvis cassette tapes and vinyl together. Love Me and Don’t Be Cruel were his two favourite tracks but he always asked me to play this whenever I saw him over the past few years. I played it for him in the last couple of days leading up to his passing by his bedside. His eyes lit up and he smiled. My grandad used to say to me “there’ll never be another Elvis”. Too true grandad, rest in peace. Love you.
my favorite song is, Don't.
using his breath as a percussion before he starts the singing again is so cool
There are great performers.
Then there is Elvis. He had it all:- looks, the hair, the moves, the songs but more
importantly, the VOICE.
A great rendition of one of my favourite Elvis tracks, no wonder young people
lost their minds.
Sixty-four years later, it is obvious nobody male or female ever matched him.
Even now.
And never will
Micheal Jackson is way better then Elvis and is way more famous but they did do different genres they were legends in there own way
@@kayloose2756 i mean, not WAY better. Because Elvis was almost as good as you could get. Michael was better though
@@kayloose2756 MJ was not better. He couldn't do country, gospel, blues, jazz, rock and excel in them all. Elvis did, and he could act, his performances in King Creole, Wild in the Country, and Charro, showed that. He choreographed Jailhouse Rock. He was famous for his generosity, helping people.
MJ? No, not a big giver at all. More famous? How is that measured? Does he have tribute artists all over the world? Do they put him on tv all day across the world every year on his birthday and date of his death? No. They do for Elvis. He was great at pop, and a good dancer, and choreographer, but only in that genre. He sold 750 million records, Elvis over a billion. Elvis is in 3 Hall of Fames - for good reason.
Sandy Juntunen MJ is a lot bigger the Elvis Lol Elvis didn’t even write his shit he only has the looks and could dance and make the music sound good that’s it... And MJ has have swag a shit ton Elvis has to
Real music. No Autotune or voice changers. Elvis was the voice changer. Today’s “music” is GARBAGE
It's a masterpiece. It's not gold, it's a platinum fund of the world stage. And this is Elvis, a 21-year-old novice performer
I cant believe how good this guy was no wonder they call this guy the king, ive never seen any other singer that can even come close to how this guy sounds and his range is unmatched.
Roy Orbison: uh, hold my beer.

He will come back
Naw, he's still around in our hearts
I don’t think Elvis will come back but if he does he won’t have to prove his love to any one especially his fans Singing his heart out for every one my josh he would be 89.
He is so gorgeous. His eyes. His face. His hair. His smile. Then he sings. I am so grateful for t.v. and footage of his earlier shows so we can still enjoy the majesty of Elvis.
Well said, Amen to that true Statement! 💖👍
I was in high school when he passed away and I didn’t realize the impact of this till much later. He really was an incredible performer still capturing hearts
Elvis invented the two words American idol without even realizing it
21 years old. gorgeous beyond belief. talented, respectful, very spiritual, overwhelming generosity (the list is endless), never forgot where he came from, born in a one room, shotgun shack. Elvis was a gift to the world. 43 yrs later he is still selling records, making money, new generations have become fans. It really is amazing. He was a true original. copied no one. just did what he felt. Always the good die young. He was sad and lonely being Elvis for 20 yrs.
How are you doing today Doris York? Its really nice having you on here .. I saw your profile on here and i think we definitely are on the same page on many levels. Trust, communication, loving, honoring, understanding, patience and respecting your partner. So crucial to provide balance. This is what creates such great chemistry between two people that are committed to one another.
Agreed and I'm straight. But he literally could NOT have been better looking. Along with all his other AMAZING traits. Could be the BEST in those areas EVER plus his talent. His personality charm. GREAT singing. Him bring a gr8 🇺🇸. Serving his 🇺🇸. His acting his generosity. Too much to name
Complete melt down watching this, I forgot how damn good he was, a voice like no other, great looks, warm personality, and a humor that shows he didn't take the audience adulation too serious. What a gift he had, and what a gift to us.
He loved the adulation. Not being able to go out in public probably stunk, but he LOVED his fans and was such a good person. He truly felt for people and I hope he made it to the party in the sky.
I am sure people were in shock when they first heard his voice. Perfect
50 yr old black and white grainy tape of Elvis, but at 02:18 that eye roll and then the bashful head tuck is still powerful enough to reach through time and space and make my heart skip a beat

Elvis commanded the stage, with so many expressive looks,he had his audience, eating out of his hands!
Elvis actually produced and arranged every RCA Victor session he did in the 1950's after the initial Nashville session in 1956. Steve Sholes was a glorified A&R man and got the credit for all of Elvis's production work due to contractual obligations.
Thank you for these facts, and pass them on ,thank you !
During that initial Nashville session Steve Sholes wanted Elvis to record a version of Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes" - which had just been released by Sun Records. Folks at RCA wanted to rush out a version by their new artist to "cover" Perkins' record. Elvis refused to record his version at that first session - precisely to ensure that Carl would have the hit with "Blue Suede Shoes." After "Heartbreak Hotel" was released as Elvis' first RCA single, then he recorded his version of Carl's song.
@@reneleclerc6119 That was very classy of Elvis to ensure that Carl would have the hit with "Blue Suede Shoes" and not to step on his toes at that time.

Yes-- but to be fair, he was never really in good health. Hard to believe when you see him performing, but...there was family history of heart, liver and kidney problems--and early death. He had emphysema, diabetes and heart problems among other things. Not to make excuses for his drug use, but there was a reason for it: he was usually in a lot of pain.

So young, so nervous and so darn good.
His humour is just infectious and that michevious tongue in cheek grin just so endearing.
He loved working with the Jordanairres, I remember reading that he said to them he would be nothing without them, he was upset when they could no longer work with him on Vegas shows and tours .
Elvis always picked the best backing singers, he always showed them great respect and allowed them to shine also.
Ed Sullivan insisted that everybody keep it “clean,“ on his show. But Elvis was still able to push the envelope just a little by simply using his voice. Amazing!
It's so good you just don't want it to end
LIVE and perfectly executed. Doesn't exist today. Pure talent!

If you don't like this you don't like music. This man is perfect.
When he sings live, it sounds like a recording ! Absolutely mesmerising face and voice ❤
0:57 the way he says “so lonely…” makes me weak.
Elvis had an understanding of crowd work just like the best. The passion in his eyes and facial expressions are very intense yet subtle with a bit of cool mixed in.
His vocal range, control and playfulness is amazing; pure, velvet sexiness no matter the octave. And those poor backup singers having to be in the same frame as Elvis, they're just normal looking guys, but look like gargoyles next to his angelic face, lol. He really is otherworldly. Yup, I'm still crushing on Elvis since I first saw him in one of his movies when I was a little kid in the early 1960s.
