this song played in the car 3 years ago as I was visiting my hometown and hanging out with one of my closest friends. we were driving and it came on, and it along with the conversation we had earlier that night, helped both of us realize we were in love with each other. I moved back a few months later to be with him. we moved in together, got married, and it's our daughter's birthday today. so thank you, Lumineers, for helping a random couple of people who'd been hurt in the past realize they needed to take a shot at love.
A note from Wesley on the video: “Cleopatra made me cry in the studio and I had to stop the take. It’s inspired by a true story about a female taxi driver who, when she was younger, was proposed to. But her father had just passed away, so she didn’t give her boyfriend an answer. So he left the village broken-hearted and rejected and never returned again. He was her great love and she wouldn’t wash the footprints off the floor after he had left. I knew immediately that I wanted to write a song about the story because it was so haunting and poetic. And I got to meet the lady herself eventually and she was very honest and humble. She really affected me because of the sadness in her story. In today’s world, we are just inundated with images of grandness and how great everyone’s life is. And it’s not true. In fact, it’s depressing. This was a real and honest story.” -Wesley Schultz
I don't know....it's a beautiful story but I think if he really was her great love he would of waited. I think Cleopatra's better off even if she didn't feel that way.
I totally agree. Who on earth would propose to a woman when her father just passed away and feel rejected and leave the town because she didn't give an answer? It's so egocentric.
“I was late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life. But when I die alone, when I die alone, when I die I’ll be on time.” This crushed me.🖤
@@terminallumbago6465 It means people follow the path that SEEMS to fit them instead of the life they truly want, because pursuing what they truly want is so much harder than fulfilling the role everyone THINKS you fit.
The mom and daughter from "Stubborn Love" the lady from "Angela" the couple from "Sleep on the Floor" and the taxi driver, is the lady from "Angela" and obviously, the band. I love it
Rebecca_Claire_ Howard the nurse and older Cleopatra from My Eyes! but can’t figure out where the red-haired guy with glasses in the taxi fits into the story?
grammar please the lady from “Angela” is the older version of the lady from “sleep on the floor”. Because of the same tattoo that was shown in both videos. So I’m assuming the middle aged guy with glasses to be the older guy
ZarKLeftys yes i’m aware of all the versions of the female lead, but her ex in Sleep On The Floor isn’t a redhead like the guy with glasses in the taxi, and the ex was shown fast forward in My Eyes (he was older but still obviously looked like his Sleep On The Floor self)
same ive heard about ho hey last 2015 and i never really paid attention to them until now i regret stanning them this late. i wish i could ever see them perform live T.T
I watched all the other music videos before this one and this made me cry like a baby. In love with all of these videos and songs. The story is just amazing..
SUMMING UP for who is lost, under the (great) merit of other people around here... Ken Tucky1 dia atrás Ophelia - falls in love Sleep on the Floor - the man she fell in love with leaves and she can't go with him because her father died Angela - she marries another man she doesn't love and has kids Cleopatra - she is old and the passengers remind her of her youth and regrets for not going with the man she loves Hunter McDonald4 dias atrás She falls in love with a guy (Ophelia). Her father dies and the guy she loves asks her to leave town with him (Sleep On The Floor) but she stays in that town. She marries a guy she doesn't love and has a child (Angela). When she's old and divorced she regrets not leaving town with her lover, back when her father died (Cleopatra). KanKillz2 dias atrás Really nice theory, now that you've said that I wouldn't be surprised if she is the protagonist in Long Way from Home if they decide to do it. Considering the character they sing about is an aged lover on their deathbed Raiya3 dias atrás Anyone else notice the mom and daughter at 0:43 are from Stubborn Love? Was that girl supposed to be the youngest version of the woman?
"But I was late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life and when I die alone, when I die alone, when I die I'll be on time" these lines are so sad and the video makes it sadder.
Okay so hear me out. About SLEEP ON THE FLOOR, ANGELA and CLEOPATRA. So basically of course this is open to a lot of interpretations but WHAT IF, all three videos (Sleep On The Floor, Angela and Cleopatra) are the story of one woman. Cleopatra. The old lady. And the ‘what ifs’ of her life. The girl from Sleep on the Floor got a wave tattoo, the pregnant lady from Angela has the same tattoo. So she could be that girl. The old woman and her son who she picks up, could be that pregnant lady and that son could be the child she was bearing. You see that transition happening in every video where it’s almost like a person's soul escaping the body and going ahead living a life of its own. So then we got two narratives. One is the actual reality and the other is the WHAT IF. In the actual reality, she never ran away with the love of her life in Sleep on the floor. In Angela, she's married and pregnant with someone else and in Cleopatra she doesn’t live with that child’s father as we see her dropping her own son and not going to the house. In the WHAT IF, in Sleep on the Floor she does run away with the love of her life and get married, but wakes up in reality. Again in Angela, the what IF is she runs away from that husband and reminisces her lost love as we see her dancing. In Cleopatra, she lives alone but the WHAT IF is when she craves for that love and family we see that transition happening and a part of her escapes her and joins that family. And another angle to that is, the day in the life of Cleopatra that we see, the old woman as a taxi driver picking up passengers, every passenger that comes, represents a phase of her life. From her being a child, to her running away with her love, to turning pregnant and being alone. Moving onto other phases of her life of grief and loneliness because then we only see single passengers, no one is in pairs. Imagine the attention to detail these guys have put into creating these three videos.
i really loved the way u made all this, its so great, its just i dont think she ever had a baby (or was pregnant) since she never met the love of her life again since the day he left( there is a relation between cleopatra and sleep on the floor, since the writer himself stated that the lady told him about her story and everything ) if u have some time check the first comments, the story is stated below and thank you for taking some of your time and writing all these words, they might someday warmth someones heart ( excuse my english)
I'm 38 and remember feeling this way about this song at 28. Through two marriages, beautiful children and what seems like a life time later, I'm still brought to my knees by the emotions this song incites in me. "Late for this, late for that" - heart crushingly true! I want to be reminded every year so I can come back to this song and see the beautiful comments by my community members who feel music like I do! Love to you all 💗🌿
I'm 37. Always been single. And it's still a stunningly beautiful yet tragic song. And that line "late for this, late for that" is truly haunting once you lived for a few years.
Ophelia Meaning : The film opens with “Ophelia.” This is really one of the only parts of the film in which The Lumineers actually appear. It’s a way for them to introduce the ballad, with a song they hold close to their hearts. “Ophelia” deals with the success, expectations, and pressure the band has gone through since rising to fame, which is why this song means so much to them. I, I got a little paycheck You got big plans and you gotta move (whoo!) And I don’t feel nothing at all And you can’t feel nothing small “Ophelia” is a constant reminder for The Lumineers. It allows them to take a step back and appreciate all that has happened to them, and that’s exactly what the video depicts. The band is playing the song for a crowd when lead singer, Wesley Shultz, steps out of his own body and removes himself from the chaos of his current life; just as the meaning of the song depicts. He exits the building and begins to dance along the street to the beat of the music. The song continues as he pleasantly strides along. As the music of Ophelia fades out, transitional notes fall in, eventually leading Shultz into the taxicab, of one, Cleopatra. They share a conversation unheard to our ears, and thus, the story begins. Cleopatra Meaning Shultz exits the car and “Cleopatra” the song begins as Cleopatra, the driver, waits for her next passenger. The “Cleopatra” portion of the ballad follows the beautiful taxi driver with wild gray hair and eyes full of wisdom, through her shift. As she drives along the busy streets you are able to see that she is reminiscing. She is reminiscing on the “what ifs” that life inevitably brings you. It’s not so much about regret, as it is about thinking about the path you took in life, and realizing that for whatever reason, it was the path you needed to take. I was Cleopatra, I was young and an actress When you knelt by my mattress, and asked for my hand But I was sad you asked it, as I laid in a black dress With my father in a casket, I had no plans And I left the footprints, the mud stained on the carpet And it hardened like my heart did when you left town But I must admit it, that I would marry you in an instant Damn your wife, I’d be your mistress just to have you around Casts of characters enter in and out of the cab, some familiar and some not, some metaphorical and some literal. Each character has a different story, and each taken in by our seasoned Cleopatra. So I drive a taxi, and the traffic distracts me From the strangers in my backseat, they remind me of you But I was late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life And when I die alone, when I die alone, when I die I’ll be on time Eventually she turns the meter off, and picks up her adult son from the airport, who enters the front seat with a wide-eyed smile and a grand hug. They drive until dusk. They stop to enjoy burgers with full smiles and genuine laughs before night falls and she must take him to his father. The song comes to a close as she drops her son off to his father’s home, and that’s when the first “what if” of the ballad, a theme that reoccurs throughout, happens. Cleopatra imagines going in to make amends with the father so they can enjoy their son’s stay together, as a family. However, instead she turns around, gets in her car, and drives away. And the only gifts from my Lord were a birth and a divorce But I’ve read this script and the costume fits, so I’ll play my part She drives. Her face is sullen and soft. A smooth transition begins as Cleopatra transforms into a much younger version of herself, driving away from something else, with the same soft and sullen look upon her face. What comes next is the beginning for Cleopatra, the beginning of the “What Ifs.” Sleep on the Floor Meaning Peaceful piano track “Patience” plays as we see the youngest version of Cleopatra sad and transfixed, staring deeply into her boyfriend’s eyes, standing at her father’s funeral. As the keys of the piano put you at ease, everything moves in slow motion. The boy slowly approaches her and whispers, “If you don’t leave now you may never make it out.” With that, “Sleep On The Floor” begins, and Cleopatra imagines what could have been if she left with the love of her life on that very day. Pack yourself a toothbrush dear Pack yourself a favorite blouse Take a withdrawal slip Take all of your savings out ‘Cause if we don’t leave this town We might never make it out I was not born to drown Baby come on “Sleep On The Floor” takes us on a journey. The young and in love couple drive across the states. They wander in and out of dirty motels, they meet new people, and they find themselves free. Although they have nothing stable or secure - they have each other. And what we come to find, is that is quite literally all that they need. They eventually marry, happy as ever, and dance into the night. As they lay down to sleep on their wedding night “Sleep On The Floor” comes to a close. The young Cleopatra locks eyes with the camera before the scene shifts out of the “what if” scenario and into reality. She’s now back in her car, just as we saw her before the song began, with that soft and sullen look on her face. She looks in the rearview, only for a second, and then continues to drive on, always moving forward. Angela Meanign “Angela” begins with Cleopatra slightly older and pregnant. She’s in bed with her husband, safe and secure in a nice home. However, it’s easy to tell she does not want to be there. At this point in the ballad you know who the Cleopatra character is, or at least who she wants to be. She’s “taller than the rafters.” Life has gotten in the way of who she wanted to become, but that still doesn’t change who she is at her core. And so, as the guitar plucks of “Angela” continue, we see the older, pregnant Cleopatra leave her body, and begin to imagine what life would be like, if she left him when she wanted to. When you left this town, with your windows down And the wilderness inside Let the exits pass, all the tar and glass ‘Til the road and sky align The strangers in this town, They raise you up just to cut you down Oh Angela it’s a long time coming And your Volvo lights lit up green and white With the cities on the signs But you held your course to some distant war In the corners of your mind She’s back to driving, back where she always seems to be - on the open road, on her own, moving forward. But this time the look on her face is not soft or sullen. It’s determined. Determined to hold her course. She drives far and wide until she reaches a motel. She gets out of the car, looks to the sky, and for the first time in the ballad she expresses joy, celebration, and finally, peace. The “Angela” video takes us on the journey of the heart and soul that is the Cleopatra character - following your gut and your heart to its wits end. My Eyes MEaning “My Eyes” is the bow that ties the story of this legend together. She’s older now; older than she was when we first met her in the taxi. She’s in a nursing home, sharing stories with the nurse, and waiting for her time to end. Oh, the devil’s inside You opened the door You gave him a ride Too young to know, too old to admit That you couldn’t see how it ends What did you do to my eyes What did you sing to that lonely child Promised it all but you lied You better slow down baby soon It’s all or nothing to you Before it ends, we see Cleopatra shift out of her body one last time, to make the move we know she wants to make. She walks down the empty halls, out of the nursing home door, and into the abyss. “The Ballad Of Cleopatra” spreads the wisdom of this character onto those who view it. She shows you to be strong and to stay true to yourself. She shows you that you may not end up exactly where you thought you would. And she shows you that even if you don’t become who you thought you would be - it doesn’t matter, becuase in the end, the only thing that really matters in your life are the people you could never and would never want to life without. So choose those people, and hold on to them tight. I won’t be late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life And when I die alone, when I die alone, when I die I’ll be on time
Can we please acknowledge how beautiful this woman is. Such a loving, sincere and warm smile.. If you ever read this lady taxi driver; you made me feel like calling my mom to tell her how much I love her. Thank you for that
In my world, music will always be "The Lumineers" and "others". You guys are genuinely the only band I strive waiting to hear. Thank you for being. Just for being.
Dear Cleopatra, I have listened to this storyline of yours since the beginning. I cried countless times too. As years passed by, I realised it was never your fault to be late. The one who didn't know how to wait for you was the one. They asked you to leave with them when you were still grieving the loss of a closed one,who you didn't even get to bury yet. When your emotion was all tangled up all over the place. They didn't understand you. Respect you enough to be thoughtful. So it wasn't you who were late for the love of your life. You were just being a human and they didn't see you as the love of their life. So if you die alone on time, don't have regrets or disappointments for yourself. What's not ours, will always find flaws in us and an excuse to leave. Even the right time cannot make them stay. They were never meant to do that. My heart goes to you. I hope you learned to forgive yourself. ❤
1:39 is the moment that every woman has had where you look into the eyes of another woman and there is just a raw yet beautiful understanding...even for brief moment.
Watch Sleep on the floor, Angela and Cleopatra in that order. I think the slightly chubbier guy with glasses at 1:10 is the guy who Cleopatra refused to run away with when her father laid in a casket. (She did imagine running away with him in Sleep on the floor). She married another man later and left him in Angela. The ex- husband appears in the end of this video. The older lady in the yellow sweater is Cleopatra at a later age. All these women have a scar on their left cheek. The director of this series deserves an award!
Avant but isn't Cleopatra the girl who drove the taxi...? And the man at the end is who she was going to get married to but she turned him down due to dealing with her father's death so he left and never returned. And she was thinking 'The is what it could've been if I said yes.' ???
2:50 I felt those moments so hard as single dad. I was a stay at home dad and my ex wife divorced me because she was jealous. Now I live for the moments with my daughter. I will forever fight to be apart of my kids life.
These videos are so beautiful. I cried. multiple times. what people aren't getting is when the ghosting happens and the frame changes, those are all the things she wished she had done. She didn't marry and get divorced from the man she was with on sleep on the floor. She married someone she didn't really love. That's why when you see the middle aged version of her (wish to) leave and drive away in Angela, she does the dance she did with her true love in sleep on the floor all by herself. which is why it's so heart breaking. and she sees her true love with her son at the end of cleopatra. Jeez. my heart hearts but it's so beautiful at the same time.
This beautifully haunting song makes me cry every single time. At 3:36 when she slaps her hand on the steering wheel, I saw and felt her hurt, a life full of regrets. That was her final gesture of surrender, and it pierced my soul as I watched her expression. The little details in this music video made it all the more precious❤️
I love the entire sequence of all of this songs, and the story they tell. But out of all of them this is my absolute favorite. The lyrics alone are beyond amazing, they give me chills everytime I listen and they make me happy in a weirdly somber way.
I finally understood the ending... The ghost is her in another time line if her choices were different. And it made me cry, because I just had that stand in the driveway moment myself about a week ago...
The story around the song is that it's based on a taxi driver from Georgia, former Soviet Socialist Republic. Her boyfriend asked her hand in marriage, but her father had just passed, so she couldn't handle his question. He left her and she never stopped loving him.

this is one of the most beautiful actors I have ever seen. You could really see in her eyes the true love she had for her boy and how time just flies. Truly an amazing performance and perfect at conveying the feelings!
Well I think the 4 songs is a reference to the couple in "Sleep On The Floor", which I think is some lovestory of the vocalist (starts in Ophelia), then some of the story in which they get married (Sleep On The Floor), then to when she gets pregnant and gets in something like a "crisis" (on Angela, not sure if understood this one right), and if you noticed the girl in Angela had the same tatoo that the girl in Sleep On the Floor had, and finally in Cleopatra they are divorced with a son together, which she picks up at the aeroport.
If you love someone and have not told them - and still have the chance - take it. Sure, the risks are great; but if you hold back the moment will pass and you might see the love of your life slip away forever.
@@aveljosecullantes3008 My ex-girlfriend broke up with me by saying she didn't loved me the way i did, and after a month of trying to be friends with her, i couldn't stand it and i abandoned her friendship. I still don't know what to think, don't know if i made the right decision. But the reason why i did it was mainly because i couldn't know if she'd ever love me that hard one day, and i didn't have the strength to keep pretending like i didn't feel anything for her anymore. Ever since we parted ways she seems happier now, so i'll keep on moving on. It hits me real hard but i guess that's life. But despite everything, i'm glad i told her i loved her, i have no regrets. And God, i love this band so much! :)
I love this song on all levels. It's such a complete piece of storytelling with such the compelling through-line: 'I was late for this; I was late for that; late for the love of my life. When I die alone; die alone; then I'll be on time'. Such a beautiful way of capturing such a heroically unapologetic view of the tragedy of a lifetime's regret. Kinda sums up everything.
I listened to this song when visiting my best friend in Spain. It had been 3 years since I had seen her, and the realisation that I was standing near her, walking down her street, only began to dawn when this song came on. We listened to it together on my headphones, as she showed me her life. Where she had gone to nursery, her dentists, where she went to get her groceries. The streets smelt like chocolate chip cookies from the local cookie factory, and the sun was so bright I could see little gold flecks. I don’t think I’d ever been happier
I feel like everyone focuses on the Regret part of this story, when Cleopatra didn't go with her love, but that disregards the happiness of this song. True she never went, and had her son with someone she didn't love, but look at how HAPPY she is with her son! And at the end she even wishes she went in with him and his father (her ex), left behind her regret, and found happiness again. But alas, she is just as obsessed with her regret as we are.
i can't describe in words how close this song is to my heart, recently a month ago me and my girlfriend broke up with me and this just has this feeling in my heart that i can't describe. i was going through severe depression, anxiety, insomnia leading me not to sleep for days and other stuff and then the breakup rlly messed me up but it is what it is, if anyone is reading this and going through something, just know there is always hope even in the darkest of times, stay strong, life is too short for worrying and feeling dead and miserable all the time, hope whoever is reading this have a happy great life, much love 🖤
My dad died last year and today would have been his birthday. I'm on vacation at the moment with a friend so i can't be at home with my family now and it's really hard. But your message honestly helped me feel better. So thank you! I hope you have a life full of greatness and happiness, too
Hang in there brother and if any woman leaves you do not sit and cry, stand up brush yourself off you are the prize. If she left you don't need her and she doesn't deserve you.
She lives vicariously through the people she drives in her car because when she gets to live her own story it's a sad one, ugh, this life man lol... love the song, love the video.
They are all related by the scars on the left cheek it explains the life story of the taxi driver. First it starts with sleep on the floor where it shows what could of happened if she didn't stick with him then next is Angela where it shows what happened when she got divorced then in cleopatra it tells her whole life story about how what would of happened if she didn't get a Devore and how she still would of been with her husband and her child. LIKE TO SPREAD THE WORD.
For those of you who understand that the 3 videos are connected. Whoever is reading this comment: follow what your heart tells you to. There will always be a million reasons to do what has been set in front of you and what is comfortable but soon you'll realize that no amount of comfort will allow you to live with regret. My ex fiance left me because it was too difficult to present our cultural differences to her family and now I can feel her regret in the air every morning. If you don't make your own decisions someone else will make them for you.
i found this song randomly, this song had me tearing up, it's also a very beautiful song. I lost my great grandfather and my grandparents many years back, this song will always remind me of them. Thank you, Lumineers
The narrative order: "Sleep on the Floor", "Angela", "Cleopatra, "Ophelia" (order is also exact opposite of the time release of the videos on UA-cam). After her father's death ("my father in a casket", Cleopatra lyrics), girl is asked by guy to leave town, but she didn't and ends up bearing a child to another guy and of course has regrets ("Angela" lyrics starts with referring to the guy who left town and there's a scene of them in "Angela" video that is taken from the "Sleep on the Floor" clip) and ironically feels free and "home at last" ("Angela" lyrics) when she goes out of the house. In Cleopatra, she's the taxi driver (proof: the same wave tattoo on arm and scar on cheek) and is "divorced" ("Cleopatra" lyrics) (also, the end shows how she didn't enter the house of her ex-husband along with her son) ("Ophelia" lyrics: "got a little paycheck, you gotta move"). Like the Ophelia character in Shakespeare's "Hamlet", the story's about a girl and choices and 'what if's of two worlds (there's always a splitting scene of one's self in all four videos), and, like the Cleopatra character in Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra", she had her times of glory, but that's past now. In the song Ophelia, Wesley (the vocalist) talks of how she has "been on [Wesley's] mind", reflecting on the whole narrative, and thus the production of the brilliantly interconnected songs and video clips. What do you think?
Go ahead and feel free to mention the actual Cleopatra. Her father died, leaving Egypt in a state of worry and her younger brother (who was about eight and she thirteen). She wanted Julius Ceasar, but he left her in Egypt to go back to Rome with his wife. Cleopatra Married Marc Antony and bore his son.
This song is simply beautiful. The lyrics and true story behind them are both sad and inspiring. The video plays out like a movie, one you wish would never end. It seems to me that all the women with the same scar she has on her face represent what could have been. My first thoughts about the boy she meets and greets were that he could be her son, but then the ending of the video made me think of something else. Maybe the man we see, the boy's father, is the man who proposed to her -that's why we see her both going inside the house (with her mind and her heart) and her driving away, sad, alone, full of regrets.
This song reminds me of a very dark time for me. I was suicidal and the first time I listened to this song I had decided to end it all. The same night I broke up with my first love. It's been two years and still every time I hear this song I think about him. The break up made me realize that I need to love myself until I can love someone else. I am better now thank god, but every time I listen to this song I cry. I just can't help myself.
My friend told me about these videos and I am sobbing watching this. This is amazingly made and helps us comprehend the choices that the women made throughout the videos. I was so touched by this and hope that this gets millions of views so the whole world sees this art
Just an observation, but if seems like the woman is driving around, or remembering, her past self. When the pregnant girl gets in the taxi, you can see a cut on her cheekbone and when she gets out, the woman driving the taxi has that same cut on her cheek. I think it shows her driving her young self away from the man we saw her son walk up to at the end of the video. And of course, the different reality that would have been had she not left. Just my take :)
Oh my God, this music video accidentally appeared on my YT feed and I have totally forgotten about it! Last time I have watched it was on my Erasmus exchange in Sweden. Now I am also in Sweden, on vacation. Gosh, back then I was studying urban planning, I was full of faith that I can change the world. Around me, there were people I don’t have contact with now, my world looked so different. Now I don’t work in urban planning, I have chosen path that is more profitable; life has given me some bad and good news. If you’re reading this up till now, remember: you don’t need to change the world. Change your life by appreciating every day, every happy moment, simple things like weather, seasons, flowers, trees. And cherish memories, even that they are „saudade”. ❤
Glad I'm not the only one weeps every time this song comes on. The backstory, the video, the story you get from the song alone, my own personal connections--it's a fucking vortex of emotions every time.
On The Spectrum (Sirius) the DJ said this was a song about Elizabeth Taylor. Ummm, no. It's not. Though she did play Cleopatra. Shows how unable the dj was to dive into the song. This video is beautiful.
I freaking love this song. Writing this comment so that year after year as Im getting old, i will come back once in a while and hear this song again and again and remember how much full of life i was when i was young... Presently Im 28 y.o, always broke, also heart broken and have mostly done everything i should have done in my teens and i will never regret about anything because i never hurted any1 and i have very lovely memories of my teens, thank you everyone who are/were part of my young journey! Note for you Sarthak, you will come back here on this video at the age of 38, please cry your heart out, you have nailed life!
I am here now! 38 now and never want to not feel this way about this song! They lyrics, omg. So much feeling about the risks and mistakes we make. There's no manual for life, were all just wanting to discover our purpose. See you in a year! What a great idea 💗
I can never explain how much I love this band, every song just hits a string in my heart. I'm upset that not much people know about your music, everything is magical and painful in the most beautiful way. I love you The Lumineers!
few songs and videos evokes such strong surges of emotion and meaning for me, but the lumineers seem to convey their poetic effect so effortlessly, so minimally that the grand feelings are not overshadowed by production. there is something very special about this band; they see things and they understand. hold them close to your hearts, please.
1:15 is Sleep on the Floor scene. Seeing their videos connect in one big reality is amazing. Just shows us that every life has its own big story to tell, although we may only meet at certain points, one becomes part of the other in particular respects.
This song reminds me of someone I loved and a special time in my life. Even though we're not together anymore, every time I listen to this, it brings back so many special moments I will cherish in my heart forever. Wherever you are, what a crazy 4 years we shared together, thanks for shaping me into who I am today! Hope you read this one day
Seeing all the Love and Beauty available in life, yet somehow always missing out on it or losing it yourself, brings on more of the pain that’s already abundant. We SEE it, we just can’t ever seem to be a part of it. We missed our bus.
When she drops her son off and has to say goodbye but leaves a part of herself with him........That hits me every time.... Reminds me of my momma!!! I Love You Mom ❤️
My grandmother just died. Watching my mother mourn the death of her own mother makes me fear the day I have to mourn her. This song reminds me so much of my mother. She's lived her life to the best of her ability, and even though she might not die with the love of her life, I know she won't die alone. I love you so much, Mom. If you see this comment, I'm sorry to be so sentimental at the moment, but live your life to the fullest and without regrets. Time flies by.
Well, that made me ugly cry... The kind of emotional response to anything I’ve been needing. I still got it! Thank you, for sharing your talents... Love you genuinely, ❤️
This video reminds me a lot my mom, her green eyes, her love, her smile, her advices! Oh I LOVE HER a lot! Please God give her health, life and blessing every day!!!
You know, my mom is a truck driver for the past several years. Im in my 20s. Shes been all across the U.S. I only see her once or twice every 3 months. Sometimes when I have a bad day and I drink, i watch this video and god I miss my mom so so so much. I’ve rode with her a few times in her truck and I absolutely miss my mom. We sometimes too would eat fast food and laugh bout random things. God I miss my mom. Don’t ever miss the chance to tell your moms you love them. Please don’t. I showed her this video and she cried the other day. God let me be strong like her
A profound analogy for the circle of life and what may be or might have been, if the reality of the future were seen with the same insight as the past.
I was you before my mother passed. I never understood her until years after. .. I realize now my mother was very Mentally ill. I registered her never speaking about her first child, my half brother, passing within days of birth from a defect due to her drug use. Never spoke about her next, My half-sister, being taken away at 1 after being found left in a playpen soiled for days covered in one bottle of red juice. There was also an older puppy in the pen too who had tried eating on her flesh in different areas. Then there's my full brother at 2 and myself then 1, who were just left with her neighbor for good until I was a teen. She was in and out of our lives.. We did not get along. I would wipe her kisses bc she was a prostitute. She hated that. I saw so much during the 2 years I lived with her in my teens to escape years of every kind of abuse from that home she left us at. Its so hard and so much. I'm still healing. I loved her so much. I hope your doing okay.
This album just shredded me apart, wow. Amazing. And so hauntingly familiar. I feel it from so many angles. So many ideas it spawn. So many regrets. Music touches the soul. And send messages. Very complex and hard to explain messages. Thank you for this one.
My entire family loves this song. We went to see the lumineers last night, and the brightside was just finishing up. As soon as we got settled. Cleopatra came on at the perfect time.
Today i lost my uncle. This song remind me of him. I cradeled in his arm when i was child. He lived his life with the same spirit like cleopatra did. I will miss you. Uncle. RIP.
this song played in the car 3 years ago as I was visiting my hometown and hanging out with one of my closest friends. we were driving and it came on, and it along with the conversation we had earlier that night, helped both of us realize we were in love with each other. I moved back a few months later to be with him. we moved in together, got married, and it's our daughter's birthday today. so thank you, Lumineers, for helping a random couple of people who'd been hurt in the past realize they needed to take a shot at love.
Amaryn Elizabeth wow your story is amazing.
I don't know I'd ever be that lucky.
I wish I could like this comment a 💯 times ... 🤗
Beautiful
Thats awesome!!
A note from Wesley on the video:
“Cleopatra made me cry in the studio and I had to stop the take.
This was a real and honest story.”
-Wesley Schultz
I don't know....it's a beautiful story but I think if he really was her great love he would of waited. I think Cleopatra's better off even if she didn't feel that way.
I totally agree. Who on earth would propose to a woman when her father just passed away and feel rejected and leave the town because she didn't give an answer? It's so egocentric.
burcu ataman Thank you for your note... very touching to know how this song came to life
burcu ataman When I listen to the song once more after reading this,I wanna cry.Behind this cheerful song is such a touching but sad story😭😭

“I was late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life. But when I die alone, when I die alone, when I die I’ll be on time.” This crushed me.🖤

Ikr it was too sad
I told my husband and sons to make sure I'm late for my funeral.
@@greeneyeddg lol Good one!
Recently, my sister n law died in her sleep at 40 next to my brother it made me reflect on my life . She died on time. Gods time.
"But I've read this script and the costume fits, so I'll play my part."
This hits right in the feels.
💯
I’ve never understood what that line meant
@@terminallumbago6465 I understand it as life gives you what it gives you and you play that part.
@@terminallumbago6465 It means people follow the path that SEEMS to fit them instead of the life they truly want, because pursuing what they truly want is so much harder than fulfilling the role everyone THINKS you fit.
@@guy8646 In other words people do what they or society think they should rather than what they want?
it's astonishing the range of emotions that this lovely lady can express only with her face.
Yes! It was beautiful how her face alone had so much emotion.
I know it's just a story for a music video, but I wish I could sit down with her and listen to while she tells her story
This lady is peaceful!
It's based on a true story !!!
what's the story?
The mom and daughter from "Stubborn Love"
the lady from "Angela"
the couple from "Sleep on the Floor"
and the taxi driver, is the lady from "Angela"
and obviously, the band.
I love it
Rebecca_Claire_ Howard the nurse and older Cleopatra from My Eyes! but can’t figure out where the red-haired guy with glasses in the taxi fits into the story?
grammar please the lady from “Angela” is the older version of the lady from “sleep on the floor”.
Rebecca_Claire_ Howard are you dumb? The other person replying is named “grammar please”

I love how they have recurring people in their music videos. It's like watching a movie then seeing the same actors in the sequel, very well done.
It's kind of a multiverse.
All the female actors in all the videos are the same but at different ages and phases of life.
Should've seen the ballade of cleopatra, it was the entirity of the story combined.
it is a movie. Watch the full one with all the songs. its a beautiful story
There is some kind of deep sensibility in her eyes that fascinates me...
agree
Ikr, kinda makes me want to sit down and listen to her stories
I dont know if its sadness or something else but her eyes are trying to "talk".
Growing humble makes your lights change in ways you can't even pick up right away, but over the years.

Ophelia - falls in love
Sleep on the Floor - the man she fell in love with leaves and she can't go with him because her father died
Angela - she marries another man she doesn't love and has kids
Cleopatra - she is old and the passengers remind her of her youth and regrets for not going with the man she loves
Hunter McDonald4 dias atrás
She falls in love with a guy (Ophelia). Her father dies and the guy she
loves asks her to leave town with him (Sleep On The Floor) but she stays
in that town. She marries a guy she doesn't love and has a child
(Angela). When she's old and divorced she regrets not leaving town with
her lover, back when her father died (Cleopatra).

Really nice theory, now that you've said that I wouldn't be surprised if she is the protagonist in Long Way from Home if they decide to do it. Considering the character they sing about is an aged lover on their deathbed

Anyone else notice the mom and daughter at 0:43 are from Stubborn Love?

This is based off an actual woman though.
watch the ballad of cleopatra
then its Ophelia
This is nothing original, it’s well known. Watch Ballad of Cleopatra.
Love to you all 💗🌿
This is your reminder to listen to this song again 😊
I'm 37. Always been single. And it's still a stunningly beautiful yet tragic song. And that line "late for this, late for that" is truly haunting once you lived for a few years.
Ophelia Meaning :
The film opens with “Ophelia.” This is really one of the only parts of the film in which The Lumineers actually appear. It’s a way for them to introduce the ballad, with a song they hold close to their hearts. “Ophelia” deals with the success, expectations, and pressure the band has gone through since rising to fame, which is why this song means so much to them.
I, I got a little paycheck
You got big plans and you gotta move (whoo!)
And I don’t feel nothing at all
And you can’t feel nothing small
“Ophelia” is a constant reminder for The Lumineers.
Cleopatra Meaning
Shultz exits the car and “Cleopatra” the song begins as Cleopatra, the driver, waits for her next passenger.
I was Cleopatra, I was young and an actress
When you knelt by my mattress, and asked for my hand
But I was sad you asked it, as I laid in a black dress
With my father in a casket, I had no plans
And I left the footprints,
the mud stained on the carpet
And it hardened like my heart
did when you left town
But I must admit it,
that I would marry you in an instant
Damn your wife, I’d be your mistress
just to have you around
Casts of characters enter in and out of the cab, some familiar and some not, some metaphorical and some literal. Each character has a different story, and each taken in by our seasoned Cleopatra.
So I drive a taxi, and the traffic distracts me
From the strangers in my backseat,
they remind me of you
But I was late for this,
late for that, late for the love of my life
And when I die alone,
when I die alone, when I die I’ll be on time
Eventually she turns the meter off, and picks up her adult son from the airport, who enters the front seat with a wide-eyed smile and a grand hug.
And the only gifts from my Lord were a birth and a divorce
But I’ve read this script and the costume fits, so I’ll play my part
She drives. Her face is sullen and soft. A smooth transition begins as Cleopatra transforms into a much younger version of herself, driving away from something else, with the same soft and sullen look upon her face. What comes next is the beginning for Cleopatra, the beginning of the “What Ifs.”
Sleep on the Floor Meaning
Peaceful piano track “Patience” plays as we see the youngest version of Cleopatra sad and transfixed, staring deeply into her boyfriend’s eyes, standing at her father’s funeral.
Pack yourself a toothbrush dear
Pack yourself a favorite blouse
Take a withdrawal slip
Take all of your savings out
‘Cause if we don’t leave this town
We might never make it out
I was not born to drown
Baby come on
“Sleep On The Floor” takes us on a journey.
Angela Meanign
“Angela” begins with Cleopatra slightly older and pregnant.
When you left this town, with your windows down
And the wilderness inside
Let the exits pass, all the tar and glass
‘Til the road and sky align
The strangers in this town,
They raise you up just to cut you down
Oh Angela it’s a long time coming
And your Volvo lights lit up green and white
With the cities on the signs
But you held your course to some distant war
In the corners of your mind
She’s back to driving, back where she always seems to be - on the open road, on her own, moving forward.
My Eyes MEaning
“My Eyes” is the bow that ties the story of this legend together. She’s older now; older than she was when we first met her in the taxi. She’s in a nursing home, sharing stories with the nurse, and waiting for her time to end.
Oh, the devil’s inside
You opened the door
You gave him a ride
Too young to know, too old to admit
That you couldn’t see how it ends
What did you do to my eyes
What did you sing to that lonely child
Promised it all but you lied
You better slow down baby soon
It’s all or nothing to you
Before it ends, we see Cleopatra shift out of her body one last time, to make the move we know she wants to make.
I won’t be late for this, late for that,
late for the love of my life
And when I die alone, when I die alone,
when I die I’ll be on time
So there is an order and a story for the songs? I assume that the order for the connected songs is the order in which you listed them here right?

The director of this series deserves an award!
holy shit you're right
Avant amaaazing!
Avant ,holy shit..rather u deserve an award for decoding it..lol
That can't be, the couple of from Sleep On The Floor appeared at 1:14
Avant but isn't Cleopatra the girl who drove the taxi...? And the man at the end is who she was going to get married to but she turned him down due to dealing with her father's death so he left and never returned. And she was thinking 'The is what it could've been if I said yes.' ???
Dear The Lumineers, please don't stop.
I can’t help but feel I’m going to be her when I’m older. That sad smile that still enjoys and lives through others in her taxi

You notice the old woman in the yellow sweater in the back of the cab has the same scar? Probably another video continuing this story.

She's so beautiful...even still

☺☺😊😊
yes
who is she!?
Cleopatra :P
Elias D Hi, I understand you very well...
Cool. Now go watch Angela.
The story around the song is that it's based on a taxi driver from Georgia, former Soviet Socialist Republic. Her boyfriend asked her hand in marriage, but her father had just passed, so she couldn't handle his question. He left her and she never stopped loving him.
Michael Rokofsky wow, i am from Georgia and that is so interesting!! Thank you
Elias D it made you cry because you are young, not hardened to life. To goodbye's. To disappointment. To being told no.

And the only gifts from my Lord were a birth and a divorce
But I've read this script and the costume fits, so I'll play my part
I was Cleopatra, I was taller than the rafters
But that's all in the past now, gone with the wind
Now a nurse in white shoes leads me back to my guestroom
It's a bed and a bathroom
And a place for the end
I won't be late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life
And when I die alone, when I die alone, when I die I'll be on time

you're amazing 🌺
Thank you💖💖💖

this is one of the most beautiful actors I have ever seen. You could really see in her eyes the true love she had for her boy and how time just flies. Truly an amazing performance and perfect at conveying the feelings!
This song is so beautiful. And her face shows so much emotions. I just wanna hug her and say it will be alright. I bet she has a great story to tell.
Now that Sleep On The Floor is out, and I've re-watched them all, this and all the other videos from this album SUDDENLY ALL MAKE SENSE.
Explain please I think I get it but I want to see other interpretations as well.
Thanks...
@@soph4702 it will develop my dear, just take the risk everything will be worth it.
@@DanielHorodenko I'm sorry to hear. Soon you'll get better. Love u x
@@aveljosecullantes3008 I'm way better nowadays, thank you!
Ugh! Your words are so pretty ❤❤❤
I just can't understand how people can make such beautiful songs...
Borno Zaman the most destructive force known.......regret
Borno Zaman Excellent comment man. Thank you for writing this because it was thought provoking for me. Cheers!
Phew! I thought she was a pedophile!
I am taking -2 for off-task
agreed, and your last phrase got me hooked. hahaha
i can't describe in words how close this song is to my heart, recently a month ago me and my girlfriend broke up with me and this just has this feeling in my heart that i can't describe. i was going through severe depression, anxiety, insomnia leading me not to sleep for days and other stuff and then the breakup rlly messed me up but it is what it is, if anyone is reading this and going through something, just know there is always hope even in the darkest of times, stay strong, life is too short for worrying and feeling dead and miserable all the time, hope whoever is reading this have a happy great life, much love 🖤
Me as of right now!!
Wonderful message! 🙏
My dad died last year and today would have been his birthday. I'm on vacation at the moment with a friend so i can't be at home with my family now and it's really hard. But your message honestly helped me feel better. So thank you! I hope you have a life full of greatness and happiness, too
Unfortunately it's me right now😭😭😭
Hang in there brother and if any woman leaves you do not sit and cry, stand up brush yourself off you are the prize. If she left you don't need her and she doesn't deserve you.
She lives vicariously through the people she drives in her car because when she gets to live her own story it's a sad one, ugh, this life man lol... love the song, love the video.
this song along with others have really helped me with my depression thank you
she's transporting all the "could be's" all the "what could have been's" had you made a different choice. this is so deep.
I am so close to cry :((((
Great song and a beautiful taxi driver. Her face lights up when she smiles, and shows moods so well with expressions. (Sad, happy etc.)
when she splits into two is that what could have happened if she had said yes and it shows you two different outcomes
wait but yes to what specifically?
Being with her love qnd having a child or dying alone. He sort of looks at her as if he is saying "you could have had this"
ooooohhh damn thats sad. the lyrics too. beautiful song;) Pardon my stupidity btw;)
Same thing happened in the Ophelia music video at the forty second mark.
What do you mean if she said yes, yes to what?
1:38 I fell in love
1:44 is better
thats Arya Stark of Winterfell and shes going home
+clary fray I'm so confused I don't see masie
+Amber Louise that's not masie she just looks like her haha
she looks like Harison Well's daughter in The Flash season 2
They are all related by the scars on the left cheek it explains the life story of the taxi driver. First it starts with sleep on the floor where it shows what could of happened if she didn't stick with him then next is Angela where it shows what happened when she got divorced then in cleopatra it tells her whole life story about how what would of happened if she didn't get a Devore and how she still would of been with her husband and her child. LIKE TO SPREAD THE WORD.
I just relized that then scrolled down to see you noticed !!!
This is one of my favorite songs of all time and getting to hear it live was beyond fantastic
Same he sound exactly the same amazing voice!!
where can i watch it?
For those of you who understand that the 3 videos are connected. Whoever is reading this comment: follow what your heart tells you to. There will always be a million reasons to do what has been set in front of you and what is comfortable but soon you'll realize that no amount of comfort will allow you to live with regret. My ex fiance left me because it was too difficult to present our cultural differences to her family and now I can feel her regret in the air every morning. If you don't make your own decisions someone else will make them for you.
Blue Ronin that was beautiful.
wow.. really needed to hear this thank you.
Yes please do it!! Go get her ❤️
Thank you...
I needed this.thank you
I'm so happy that people understand how good this song is
this showed up on my reccommended without me ever listening to this band or even this genre and now I'm so happy I clicked :)
Welcome to our world :)
I envy your ears now that you get to listen to Lumineers for the first time.
Same! Im glad it did though
They're awesome. Ophelia is also awesome 🤗 and all of their songs
i found this song randomly, this song had me tearing up, it's also a very beautiful song.
Love this connection. Have you looked in to stubborn love too?
I love the subtle continuity and that the screenwriter/s and band do not feel the need to overstate the narrative.
I do still cry, though. :)
This makes me "happy-sad" 😟
Go ahead and feel free to mention the actual Cleopatra. Her father died, leaving Egypt in a state of worry and her younger brother (who was about eight and she thirteen). She wanted Julius Ceasar, but he left her in Egypt to go back to Rome with his wife. Cleopatra Married Marc Antony and bore his son.
Did Chrisopher Nolan recently switch from making movies to making songs???
I mean this is unbelievably well-wrought ....
I listened them to much i crying so mcuh right now i cant even see the screen. I just happy and sad at the same time while i listening them
I feel you
Exactly the same over here
+Khaleesi thanks
I relate to this so much goddamn me too
Michael Johnston at least you're not lying when you say ugly fat f××k ...now I'm crying:'(((
This song reminds me of a very dark time for me.
I'm happy that you are better now :) and it's ok to cry sometimes but not always
We all deserve love and to be loved ^^
It seems as though most of the women have that scar. I think it's a beautiful part of the narrative.
You think very beautiful
I think it part of a beautiful larger narrative.
yeah, I thought the same thing
I thought the same
Oh my God, this music video accidentally appeared on my YT feed and I have totally forgotten about it! ❤
The lumineers you took the making of music videos to a whole new level! love and respect
Glad I'm not the only one weeps every time this song comes on. The backstory, the video, the story you get from the song alone, my own personal connections--it's a fucking vortex of emotions every time.
What's the backstory?
lmao
On The Spectrum (Sirius) the DJ said this was a song about Elizabeth Taylor. Ummm, no. It's not. Though she did play Cleopatra. Shows how unable the dj was to dive into the song. This video is beautiful.
Oh fuck me. I've never heard this song, just surfed in, I was sobbing by 3 minutes in.
Are you a divorced taxi driver?
I freaking love this song. Writing this comment so that year after year as Im getting old, i will come back once in a while and hear this song again and again and remember how much full of life i was when i was young... Presently Im 28 y.o, always broke, also heart broken and have mostly done everything i should have done in my teens and i will never regret about anything because i never hurted any1 and i have very lovely memories of my teens, thank you everyone who are/were part of my young journey! Note for you Sarthak, you will come back here on this video at the age of 38, please cry your heart out, you have nailed life!
Lots of love and power to you, my friend. Ace the life!!!
This is the comment i want to return to in 2030. HAVE A NICE TIME AHEAD, also come back to this i wanna know your story.
1 year later
2 years later....i wanna be a part of this i don't wanna be where i am right now 5 years later see you then
I am here now!
I love you The Lumineers!
few songs and videos evokes such strong surges of emotion and meaning for me, but the lumineers seem to convey their poetic effect so effortlessly, so minimally that the grand feelings are not overshadowed by production. there is something very special about this band; they see things and they understand. hold them close to your hearts, please.
im here to leave my mark before this song blows up the worlwide charts.
Same
count me in!
yassss
Me too!
amen
1:15 is Sleep on the Floor scene. Seeing their videos connect in one big reality is amazing. Just shows us that every life has its own big story to tell, although we may only meet at certain points, one becomes part of the other in particular respects.
This song reminds me of someone I loved and a special time in my life. Even though we're not together anymore, every time I listen to this, it brings back so many special moments I will cherish in my heart forever. Wherever you are, what a crazy 4 years we shared together, thanks for shaping me into who I am today! Hope you read this one day
THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL THE WHOLE STORY LINE OH MY GOD I AM CRYINGGH
Seeing all the Love and Beauty available in life, yet somehow always missing out on it or losing it yourself, brings on more of the pain that’s already abundant. We SEE it, we just can’t ever seem to be a part of it. We missed our bus.
When she drops her son off and has to say goodbye but leaves a part of herself with him........That hits me every time.... Reminds me of my momma!!! I Love You Mom ❤️
She was not welcomed inside because she does not hate white males and is not a feminist.
Songs by The Lumineers make me feel emotions when I can't feel them. I think that says a lot. It helped me cry when I couldn't let myself cry.
Greatest song ever written
Saw this live a week ago. Made me cry. Definitely worth seeing them in concert. Life-changing.
I LOVE THIS BAND.

one of the best songs ever written. Concise, beautiful, and tragic
This is my first youtube comment ever because I've had to because this song and the video are beautiful and I feel like I'm a Lumineers fan now.
Welcome!

almost all of there songs are brilliant (:
man, that old lady is really gorgeous!
yes
Yes she is....
At 3:00 you can see the old ladies pain of dropping her son off at his dads house/exhusband
And she thinks of what might, could have been. Great song and video, I do not think it could of been made any better
3 years listening to them, I wom't regret the time spent listening them!
same!
I have been listening to this song since day one and every time it gives me shivers!
I hear you.
Well, that made me ugly cry...
The kind of emotional response to anything I’ve been needing.
I still got it!
Thank you, for sharing your talents...
Love you genuinely,

God let me be strong like her
I don't know why, this song makes me cry😭😭😭
Davan Flat me too, it makes sense though-this is the true story of a woman and it is sad

She's absolutely stunning. And what a haunting video
A profound analogy for the circle of life and what may be or might have been, if the reality of the future were seen with the same insight as the past.
I was crying so hard because I have a really bad relationship with my mom and no matter what I do it isn’t enough
same :(((
I was you before my mother passed.
That was so good.... Love how you guys really told the woman's story!
the sort of song to make you want to pack your life up, fall in love and explore this huge world with such little time🥲....
This song and "angela" make me tear up or cry almost every time I hear them. The melody and vocal line is freaking incredible!
This album just shredded me apart, wow. Amazing. And so hauntingly familiar. I feel it from so many angles. So many ideas it spawn. So many regrets. Music touches the soul. And send messages. Very complex and hard to explain messages. Thank you for this one.
What an absolute gem of a song. Love it.
Uncle. RIP.
But i was late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life
👌😆
