Rowena Wise is a Melbourne/Naarm-based artist whose ruminations on love, alienation, and self-empowerment are fast catching attention. Described by CLASH as “carefully etched indie folk” after having teased a few brilliant singles, she’s finally announcing her stunning new album, Senseless Acts of Beauty.
“I sat down at the piano and wrote ‘Gone’ the day after the death of my bird Finlay. Seeing the light leave his eyes had a profound effect on me. This small creature flew around my house every day for 9 years, and then poof, all that life and individuality was gone. ‘Gone’ is about impermanence and gratitude for the small things. The dirt below is calling for us, and Finlay’s death reminded me that it’ll one day claim me and everybody I know. All of my stuff will also be gone. Eventually, a lot of forests, reefs, and other animal species will be gone too. For all the headspace spent on material things, it'll end up in landfill. In the face of such a fact, the sum of my life will only amount to whatever meaning I give the moment. 'Gone' has an undercurrent of deep gratitude, and despite the looming end, that feeling gives me a momentary stillness."
