I totally disagree. Our Constitutional rights are under threat and 1st Amendment auditors could be doing important civil rights work - but they are as addicted to "the walk of shame" as LEO's are to asking for ID. Being unnecessarily belligerent and rude from the jump actually diminishes the effectiveness of these audits. So many 1st Amendment Auditors would be doing SO MUCH MORE good if their behavior was professional, and meticulously informed of the laws relevant to the jurisdiction they are in.
I'm sorry, this auditors behavior is doing more harm than good to the cause.

This type of behavior by the Mesa PD happens because it is tolerated at the top. The cops behave this way because the supervisors all the way up the line tolerate it and there is no penalty for the police behaving so poorly.

It must be so sad to be a cop and realize that the citizens that you took an oath to serve and protect hate you so much as a result of your tyranny that you are not safe out in public while "serving and protecting" citizens. Law Enforcement consistently acts like this and it's why they have so little community support.
They still try to prevent people from recording them because they don't want their true actions seen publically.

I called and got hung up on when I said I was from Texas and I was planning a trip to Mesa but I was afraid of getting shot in my hotel hall at or beat up at a traffic stop or violated for filming the police. She was really pissed. She actually said she had no idea what I was referring to. I said so you lie as much as your officers? Click.

Ever notice how when cops are harrassing auditors the (not specifically cop watchers) they often use the line "we got a call about..." and they tell you that someone made a claim and they MUST investigate...yet, when you tell them that their fellow cops did something wrong the answer is always "well I wasn't here!"

Yes! Have you seen the video by Press NH Now at the DHS security border in Portland Maine? You gotta see it! The worst case of an A1'er being assaulted I've ever seen! Same guy who assaulted PNHN murdered another auditor. Ran over him with a Tahoe. Splattered him all over the windscreen. Auditor's last words were " no expectation of privacy in public." Yeah, nothing was done. It's supposedly on film but I haven't looked for it yet.
Anyway PNHN was alone when it happened. A bunch of other A1's got together with him & they went back to the same place to record again. Smdh

I think you probably know how valuable and unfortunately necessary people such as yourself are. Case in point: you kept this guy from being railroaded! 4:33 "21 feet away" rang a bell for me. USAF veteran here; I remember qualifying with side arms. 7 yards was second stage in qualifying. Is 21 feet better 20 ? No difference, until you pace it. The cops want you 7 paces away and you know the shortest cops are going to stretch as are the tall ones. Laser tape measures are getting cheap. Keep giving it to the man.

We need to get these police departments under contract that Internal Affairs is handled 100% by volunteers. Each time a cop forgets they are a peace officer and abuse the badge, twenty volunteers from the town/city the cop works, gets called to review the cop... To look over his jacket, how many abuse cases do they have, what's the feedback from the public on the cop, and let the cop be judged and answer to the public that they work for. Because letting cops run Internal Affairs and allowing them to investigate themselves has been a complete and total failure. This new way reminds cops that we aren't the enemy, we are watching, they will be held responsible for any abuse, and that they do work for us... We pay them to go after real criminals and predators to society.

Excellent point. To much time at the gun range and not enough in a law book. Since college Ive taught myself many things, most recently real estate law to help a disabled vet friend of mine and a property dispute with his neighbor. He won.

When an officer is hired by a new department they should be required to do so many hours of retraining to know the laws, also they should be required every so many years to take a refresher courses.
I really think they are TAUGHT to empty the entire clip if they have to fire once. It's not to stop someone from doing something or for self defence, it's to kill, period. Fair enough if someone is shooting at them, but not when that person is unarmed and running away.

Mesa AZ has grown tremendously in the past few years and as a result, the police department has been hard pressed to add staff as fast as the city demands it. Unfortunately, many of those new officers were REJECTS from their previous departments and this is so clearly reflected in the quality of service the Mesa PD provides. The Police Chief is lying simply to protect the still too few officers in his command, even if they are AWFUL cops.

I am not an auditor but I would assist in any way I can. We need to go to the next level. We need to start talking to the police chief and the mayor in this fashion. Ultimately they are responsible they are the top of the chain of command. They are incompetent and that needs to be said to their face loudly
