Just got the XC40 R-Design for my wife yesterday. We stepped it down from the XC90 as she wanted a smaller suv, and she loves it. I think you made an error regarding the rims, you can upgraded to 20” rims, and we did. Thanks for the review!
Thanks for sharing, enjoy your purchase, it's a great one. Are you in the US or Canada? On the Volvo site in Canada, it just shows 19" wheels, no 20" available.
I had one t5 and the engine was a little noisy and there was some noticeable lag for the turbo , the adaptive cruise control was a little slow to restart and ride was noisy too . Other than that was a good car I have to take it to the dealer because problems with the capless gasoline system But , I was involved in a car accident and it was totaled and I survived, so I appreciate that very much . Thanks for the review
I'm sorry to hear about your accident, I am glad your Volvo did its job. I didn't find a lag with this T5, it was really peppy, more than I thought it would be. Thanks for watching!
People talk about self driving and all that jazz but the best things ever are heated seats, cooled seats, heated steering wheels and rearview cameras, you have that and your life is golden.
I agree, Volvo make some of the best seats. They are so good, you even notice when you try them at the car show. In New York, I remember going from a Mercedes S class to (at the time) the Volvo S80, and I noticed the difference immediately. You do not even have to drive the car!
I owned a Volvo S60 back 2005. I have been brand hopping ever since. But I have to admit, that to this day, the most comfortable car seats I've ever sat in where the Volvo S60 seats from back in 2005. I haven't ridden a Volvo since then, but I have to imagine they have only improved in the last 16+ years. Insanely comfortable seats. They are even better than BMW. I think they are industry leading comfort.
Hey Zack, those commenters that previously bashed you for saying that the XC40 was intended mostly for women were obviously not as educated and informed as you when it comes to vehicles and brands’ target consumers...quite obvious as you do car reviews for a living unlike those commenters! Good thing your opinion was validated by Volvo’s award.
LoL at 13:30ish. Zac tries to take a victory lap and Drea hits him with the "yes dear, you're the best! line". How many times have we all been on the receiving end of that?
As a used car, Volves are not cheap to fix. They are pricey repair due to the parts costs. But Volvo does an outstanding job in rust protection which is a real bonus for Canadian ownership.
Nice review. Wife looked at a few cars and wound up on the XC40, then it was T5 vs. P8. Watched both your reviews and were very helpful. The nice thing is other than drive train they are virtually identically equipped. The infotainment is Google in the P8, but lacks a few features. The limited range and extremely thirsty P8 while under normally not an issue can be a concern in the cold. Also driving both cars the T5 seems a bit more nimble and handles road irregularities better than the P8. The battery weight of the P8 hurts it on irregular roads, but still a nice car and handle good, just not as nimble as the T5. And I know people complained about Volvo's older infotainment, but I found it rather good, mostly intuitive. Wife is getting T5 in Bursting Blue and it is a very good looking vehicle. As for the wheels, the 20 inch wheels do make the ride a tad harsher and in the P9 the 19's are better on the ride, actually wish the T5 we are getting had the 19's as it would make the ride really compliant while still handling. And the T5 has a spare which the P8 does not.
I think is the XC40 is a nice little premium package thats been very well thought out. The speakers are not in the doors, which improves storage. They use whats called an air woofer for sound thats under the hood on the cowl. Good review guys! I think this is the nicest of the group, in its class.
Thank you so much, really glad you are enjoying the reviews we do together. And it was our pleasure to answer your questions, I really love this segment.
Geez, Zack, get a room! LOL! You guys are definitely doing something right as a couple! Great review, as it’s become the norm lately! I appreciate that Volvo hasn’t followed the fake air intake and enormous front grille trends that other manufacturers have embarked on.
Great job you two!! I’m shopping for my first lease deal as the pandemic winds down after saying goodbye to my 2012 VW Tiguan and I am just amazed by the competition and the sub/compact luxury SUV level. I appreciate your video as I do my research from the comfort of my home, and after pricing every option and test driving the tops, the xc40 just wins out. No better lease deal out there, plenty inventory seems available (unlike the Q3), and overall the vehicle just takes the cake. Seriously, thank you!!
Hello from Volvo land (Sweden). All the Volvo XC40's (and every car in this class) should not have larger than 18" wheels. The comfort is sooooo much better with 18". This trend with 20", 21" and 22" wheels has to stop. Now! We are soon driving with napkins on aluminum rims for God's sake... Aluminum against asphalt... sounds really comfortable, right? The design hysteria in the wheel-department has gone through the roof the last 10-15 years. Buy decent, normal, adequate wheels and enjoy a quiet and luxurious ride. All 20", 21" and 22" aluminum wheels should be melted and used for engine blocks (and other more useful parts). Why would anyone drive a noisy car? *And even pay more money to get this special noise-feature???* People are completely mad.
Yes, I agree about sitting up high. One of my pet peeves are cars where you sit low. Both my daughter and I prefer to sit higher. I'm 5'4'' and my daughter is 5'9''. Your reviews are the best!
Think I drove this exact tester at Volvo of Vancouver a few weeks ago, ended up going with an XC60 instead! You guys should totally do a video on the XC60 to compare
I’ve followed Zach for a while and I enjoy the channel a lot. But the addition of Andrea to it has brought it up to a whole new level. Keep up the great work, guys. Greetings from south of your border.
Hi Zack and Andrea, Another great car review! Very informative... and love your dynamics. 😉 I also like the 'For Your Consideration' segment. I will be test driving this XC40 soon.
I look forward to your videos each week- thanks for the excellent content. The Volvo looks better than it's competitors IMO, not sure I'd buy one though.
own the t4 and don't find it underpowered or any trouble. I don't use it for offroad for im very happy with FWD and the fuel savings :) the XC40 is an excellent vehicle
Wow that 360 camera is awesome. Gotta say that with most companies, the different views by different cameras around the vehicle put together make the 360 look VERY weird, barely usable sometimes. That one, though, is impressive
I like the xc40. Living in a big city, I like a compact all season car but appreciate some power, good styling , Handling and good ergonomics, reasonable cost. If I wanted power I’ll bring out my 2016 E63 Amg (800hp). This is a great 3 season car (this or the golf R, Mazda CX30). Thank you for the informative video.
Long time sub and love the changes to the channel. Andrea brings a great new dynamic to the reviews. You convinced me to grab the new Q3 with that review. Keep up the great work!
Just like Volvo is a case study in expert interior design, Motormouth has become a riveting feature among the many car channels I enjoy regularly on UA-cam. From the driving footage, to questions, to onscreen info, night time pictures, comparisons with other models in the segment and so on, I can´t think of a more entertaining car channel to watch. I was skeptical at first when Zack brought a chick on board (inevitable Yoko Ono comparison), but am happy to have been proven wrong. Andrea adds a lot to what was already a great watch every week.
"I like it hot too"...you made Andrea blush! (LOL) Nice review but too bad they don't do a hybrid version. I'm not all in on full electric yet as I drive a Rav4 Hybrid for that reason. Thanks!
Another great video- I really look forward to your in depth reviews and thoroughness of every vehicle. Can you tell me where the XC40 is manufactured? I can't find it anywhere- Sweden? Belgium? China? Andrea adds so much enthusiasm and spark to your reviews. She is very knowledgeable and informative. As a (former) dedicated male chauvinist, I truly value her input, opinions and comments!! I am now a real Andrea fan.
Wow! Thank you so much, I really appreciate your kind words. I am glad to hear you are enjoying the reviews we do together and are enjoying my input. :) The XC40 is built in Belgium.
The XC40 is built in Ghent, Belgium and Luqiao, China. The Ghent-plant is the global hub for the XC40 and supply most markets. The plant in China supply the APAC-region. You can tell by the VIN where it´s built. If a Volvo-VIN start with YV1 it´s built in Sweden or Belgium. If it starts with LVY/LYV it´s built in one of the China-plants and 7JR if it´s built in the US. In addition to this the 11th digit in the VIN is the plant-code. I´m nut sure about the Lugiau-plant, but the others are like this: 1 = Torslanda 2 = Ghent P = Daqing G = Charleston B = Chengdu An example is this VIN: LYVUZBMUDLB433959. This is a XC60 built in China (LYV) at the Chengdu-plant (B). Another one is YV1XZBBVFL2306910, and this is a XC40 built in Belgium (YV1) at the Ghent-plant (2).
I own a Volvo XC40 T5 R Design Polestar for over 6 months now and I won't trade it for any other car. Minimal, fun and power packed. What else do you need?
Yep i watched the earlier xc40 review. I was one of the roasters because i thought some guys would appreciate those features. But tbh, you had good points
Excellent review! Informative, funny, great entertainment, I look forward to this every Saturday, thank you. Drea love the red boots, love your style, you are the coolest. 😎
@@andreaspencer9813 Sporty. I also don’t want to spend an extra $1000 for the climate pkg when for $200 you get the heated steering wheel on the Audi Q 3. I’ve had 6 bmw’s and now have an A5 convertible and LOVE it!
@@steveschultz4358 I would go with the Q3 then and there's great value there, plus you're already in the Audi family. I've always liked the A5, great car!
I realize that the vast majority of viewers are urbanites so I understand some of your points. I do feel that you also need to take a more middle of the road view as there are many buyers (more all the time) living in rural settings and wanting vehicles more rugged....hence why you see so many CUV's / SUV's / Trucks in more rugged trim. Volvo, putting 20" wheels on this car is dumb....and people in Canada specially need better choice when it comes to what manufacturers packaging. I agree...its dumb not to put heated seats and steering wheels in their cars. If people want larger tires....go aftermarket. This is Canada....not Miami Beach. Another thing that would be good to know is CSI for each manufacturer and not get so caught up in what the vehicle feels like with only 2000 km on the odometer. Real world approach.
Just bought a 2021 XC40 R Design and I love it. The Swedes are masters of functional design. However there is a tiny storage compartment between the cup holders and the wireless charger and no one seems to know it's purpose. Would love to know if you two noticed it.
Great review. It’s not exactly a cheap compact SUV, but compared to its competitors... I think it is a steal. Volvo products, typically of late, are undeniably unique, rather scarce and quite stoic. I’ve always wanted a Volvo (Ideally a V70 R or the V90), so if this is someone’s market, price wise ... I would absolutely recommend shortlisting the refined product. Thanks for the video.
I do however disagree about the tyre size, I would prefer 18”s on this size of vehicle. 19-20’s, I feel take are a distraction from the it’s stylish lines. (Most would disagree with me).
Thanks so much for another great review. I’ve been car shopping for the past few months. At first, I was ambivalent about purchasing a luxury vehicle, but when I test drive the XC40 a few weeks ago, I really liked it. I decided to test drive the Audi Q3 and did so today...and I fell in love! It’s pretty much between those two for me! Just out of curiosity, which one did you like the most overall? I think the Q3 is it for me - I loved how clean and intuitive the interface is, the driving felt awesome, and I just love the look of it externally - but I still have a soft spot in my heart for the XC40! I was just wondering which one you guys liked best between the two!
@@Motormouth... Thanks so much for taking the time to respond, and so quickly. That is exactly what I had in mind to do: a longer test drive with both cars this spring, when I’m ready to buy. I’m really leaning towards the Q3 because I loved how I felt in the car, if that makes sense. But I was just wondering which of the two you liked the most, for curiosity’s sake. Thanks again so much!
They are both great products and I enjoy some features more on the Volvo and vice versa.. But, overall, I enjoyed the feel of the Q3 more, it felt like I was not sitting up as high which made for a sportier drive. The Volvo is refined and smooth, the Q3 is a lot more fun. So it really depends on what you like and prefer.
@@andreaspencer9813 That’s exactly how I felt, too! I still found the Q3 to be a smooth ride, but it definitely felt sporty, too. I had a smile on my face as I drove it! I also agree with @Motormouth regarding the inside, because I prefer a clean interior. Both cars are excellent and I’m excited and fortunate to have them as choices. On another note, I really enjoy the energy of your channel and love the reviews! Thank you for the effort you put into the videos!
Torque? Torque? You want torque? One word: "Polestar". There's a $1K (ouch!!! but I paid it anyway) option for added ECU programming, sold as the Polestar package. It's all about keeping the motor throwing out tons of torque. It also changes transmission shift points. It' supposed to help provide engine braking - count me underwhelmed on that point. Go with manual paddle shifting, Polestar engaged, and the XC40 is a beast in the twisties. Drop back to "Comfort" and back to "let the engine pick the gears" out of the twisties. Life is very, very good. Oh, yeah, and there's a Polestar badge that blends in with the two other badges on the back. How cool is that? :D
To be honest, I would choose the CX-5 Signature over the CX-30 myself. As for the Volvo vs. Mazda, I think you have to drive them both and see which one you prefer. Between the CX-30 and the XC40, the XC40 is bigger so if you need more space, the XC40 would be the way to go.
Love the review. I am having a difficult time deciding between the XC40 and the Audi Q3. I like the looks of this; however, we owned a 2017 XC90 Inscription and were very disappointed. We had quite a few problems.
@@6aloolq8 we had issues with the autonomous features. Here's one example: Right after we bought the vehicle it had to be taken in for a recall. The dealership was returning it to us and their delivery driver was in stop and go traffic on the freeway. He ended up hitting the vehicle in front of him causing damage to the front end of our brand new Volvo. The autonomous breaking did not engage. We had other problems with the lane system. The navigation showed us in the middle of lake Michigan once in a while. We took a road trip from the Dallas Texas area to Arkansas during the middle of summer and we were only about 2 hours into it and our air conditioning unit went out. The vehicle ended up spending a lot of time in and out of the shop. Though it was very beautiful we just didn't want the headache. My wife now has a BMW X7 and we couldn't be happier with that vehicle.
@@peetfj sorry to hear that! I am stuck also stuck between an x1 or q3 or an xc40. Seeing that Volvo is no longer Swedish, it makes me question the reliability of it even more after hearing your troubles.
Nice to see you guys on my birthday. As usual you guys do a great review. My friend just got one from Volvo here in Montreal as a loaner as they work on his car. Volvo are great for standing behind their products. My friend had premature rust on the 4 fenders and they replaced all four. They come from the factory already pre-painted. Also his car is almost 10 years old and has over 130Kms! His car is a fully loaded T6. Regarding the loaner he was surprised how sluggish compared to his sedan; apparently it's an 8 speed automatic while his car is a 6 speed auto. I love the Volvo interiors and even for an older model the infotainment system is quite good. Scandinavian design meets Bang & Olufsen. Don't the taillights remind you of the old Nissan Juke? Not my favorite. Volvo call the headlights Thors Hammers....They're ok. I find the price is higher than the competition for the same amount of features. BMW just reduced the starting price of the 2021 X1....and no HUD display in the Volvo. Are there any paddle shifters?
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the review. As well, thanks for your feedback on your friend's Volvo, sounds like it has been a good vehicle for him. Yes, there are paddle shifters on the R-Design XC40.
Hi guys - thank you for the review Can I ask - what is the cabin noise like at higher speeds please Also- I have 2 Labradors- would you mind saying if you ever do reviews to figure in putting in dogs in suvs-- I currently have a Subaru XV - or Crossover as it’s known in the northern hemisphere I’m also obsessed with auto locking when the driver leaves a car - which I had in my Renault - I’ve accidentally left my car unlocked so many times!
I noticed you guys didn't bring up the GLB. I understand it sits sort of between the XC40 and XC60 but how would you compare them all? Also, which did you think would be better for a young family of 4, and a driver who likes a sporty yet forgiving ride?
We didn't bring up the GLB because it's not really in this class but you are right, it sits in between the XC40 & XC60. We really like the GLB, excellent handling and definitely roomier than the GLA, Q3 and XC40. I think for a growing family, you may prefer the GLB for space or even the Q5.
Hi guys great review. Just noticed when the car pulled up it does come with 20inch wheels, so I think Andrea may have got it wrong when she said this trim only comes with 19 inch rims?
Not mentioning reliability issues on vehicles like the Alfa and Volvo to name a few is an criteria I would like to see added to reviews. You don’t want to be Motortrend having to take back your Car of the Year award when they selected the Alfa. Reliability is a creditable measurement.
Hi guys great review so entertaining, just wondering out of the Merc,Audi,Mazda and Volvo which would you rate for ride comfort and the quietest cabin ?
They are all very good! The Audi Q3 has a sporty feel, MB GLA is smooth, sporty and the cabin is quite quiet. The Volvo is refined and smooth. The Mazda CX-5 Signature is a great vehicle, sporty, smooth and good value. It really depends on what you like and what you're looking for. They are all quite different.
Enjoyed your review. The Volvo is a bit of chunky styling. Too much for me. However, I am considering it and the Audi. I am leaning towards the Audi though.
This test car did come with 20-inch wheels for $1475.
ps, you can get a sunroof on the momentum(base) trim also($1150 option)
I was about to say.... this car has the 20” wheels.
Nightlife and viewer questions. You guys are killing these car reviews. Keep up the great work.
Wow, thank you very much! Really glad you are enjoying the new features.
I find that Volvo has really improved their styling and curb appeal, their styling used to be so blah and almost sleepy.
Yes, I couldn't agree more, the recent Volvo's I have been in have been great.
That blahness is what made them so popular among the few that bought them.
Except for that piece of plastic in the driver seat. Oh, wait…
i have a 2020 XC40 with the polestar upgrade, LOVE my Volvo

Wow that 360 camera is awesome. Gotta say that with most companies, the different views by different cameras around the vehicle put together make the 360 look VERY weird, barely usable sometimes. That one, though, is impressive
You both are 'bursting' in style. Good review 👌
Thank you!
Much appreciated!
Hey . Lovely report. The elegance of Andrea fits with the elegance of that Volvo....
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for watching!
thanks from the US for a great review!
Long time sub and love the changes to the channel. Andrea brings a great new dynamic to the reviews. You convinced me to grab the new Q3 with that review. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much, glad you like the changes we've made. Happy our review helped you buy a Q3, great vehicle. Enjoy!
Good choice!
Thanks for your kind words and we are happy you like the changes we've made to the channel.
Yes she does.
This must be so awkward to watch if u were their kids 😂 love these guys tho
This is nothing, they've heard it all before...
@@Motormouth... lmao!
Haha
Lovely review. Quick question to both of you - If you had to choose between the BMW X1 and the Volvo XC40, which one would you go for, and why?
20” wheels are available for all trims even on the base Momentum.
ahhh... he keeps touching her arm. Oh wait, they are a couple. Phew
Love the reviews the both of you are putting out, thanks so much!
"I like it hot too"...you made Andrea blush! (LOL) Nice review but too bad they don't do a hybrid version. I'm not all in on full electric yet as I drive a Rav4 Hybrid for that reason. Thanks!
Thanks, glad you liked it! :)
Great review of the Volvo. I think Volvo is making a comeback
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
A very slow comeback, but once they are all electric and improved range over time they will be epic.
Love the look of this car and I’m a man 😉 Great fun and informative vlogging style guys 👏👏
From what I have read, some come from Belgium, some from China. Your phone, computer, TV and camera also come from China... Yes, Andrea is the best!
I´m nut sure about the Lugiau-plant, but the others are like this:
1 = Torslanda
2 = Ghent
P = Daqing
G = Charleston
B = Chengdu
An example is this VIN: LYVUZBMUDLB433959. This is a XC60 built in China (LYV) at the Chengdu-plant (B). Another one is YV1XZBBVFL2306910, and this is a XC40 built in Belgium (YV1) at the Ghent-plant (2).
Hi guys I’ve subscribed great review going to test drive a xc40 R Design Saturday next thanks 👍
Woman's World Car of the Year was great vindication!!
Haha Zork now Andrea's jacket is "felt".
Excellent review! Informative, funny, great entertainment, I look forward to this every Saturday, thank you. Drea love the red boots, love your style, you are the coolest. 😎
Thank you so much, glad you are enjoying the content!
@Motormouth
In terms of JUST road noise and ride comfort, would you pick this or the Q3? Thanks in advance!!
The XC40 is very smooth and refined. The Q3 also smooth but more of a sporty feel. What do you prefer?
@@andreaspencer9813 Sporty. I also don’t want to spend an extra $1000 for the climate pkg when for $200 you get the heated steering wheel on the Audi Q 3. I’ve had 6 bmw’s and now have an A5 convertible and LOVE it!
@@steveschultz4358 I would go with the Q3 then and there's great value there, plus you're already in the Audi family. I've always liked the A5, great car!
1:01 here in Turkey we have only the T3 (163 hp, 3 cylinders) because of the very high taxes. The T3 Momentum is around 70.000 USD :(
What a video guys... you 2 working together really worked! Well done 👍🏻
Thank you very much, glad you like us together! :)
Thanks a ton!
Andrea Spencer u
Definitely worth upgrading to the 20-inch wheels in the video then, they look great..
Definitely!
Hi Zack and Andrea! Great review as always!
Totally off-topic: Zack reminds me of a young Norm Macdonald.
Thank you, glad you liked it. Yes, there are a few people who see the same thing as you!
Cute SUV especially with Andrea driving it Nice review guys
Thank you, really glad you enjoyed the review!
What a great couple! Thanks
Probably where the ash tray goes if you get the smokers package.
I saw it, but I didn't know what to put in it lol! I think I read somewhere it is for coins or cards?
I just bought the same Volvo, it's a Trush Can 😊👍
After 2019th Tiguan I gott Volvo xc 40 and I love it!
What vehicle would you prefer to be in when involved in a two car head on collision at 60mph or more? Thank you very much. I need guidance.
@@kellingtonlink956 Interesting, thanks for your feedback!
Thank you for watching!
The best advice is to go and drive them again and spend time in each, the decision should be based on which you like to use more.
Me personally, I like the Q3. Simple, clean interior and regular gas! We also had an Audi A7 for 4 years and it was flawless.
I think this may be (one of) the best looking small premium utility vehicle(s).
i love mine!
Enjoyed the reviewed. Would you choose this Volvo XC40 or the Mazda CX-30 (Turbo)? It seems you like both, but does one star out versus the other?
To be honest, I would choose the CX-5 Signature over the CX-30 myself. As for the Volvo vs. Mazda, I think you have to drive them both and see which one you prefer. Between the CX-30 and the XC40, the XC40 is bigger so if you need more space, the XC40 would be the way to go.
Love the review. I am having a difficult time deciding between the XC40 and the Audi Q3. I like the looks of this; however, we owned a 2017 XC90 Inscription and were very disappointed. We had quite a few problems.
What were this problems if I may ask
Hi guys - thank you for the review
Can I ask - what is the cabin noise like at higher speeds please
Also- I have 2 Labradors- would you mind saying if you ever do reviews to figure in putting in dogs in suvs--
I currently have a Subaru XV - or Crossover as it’s known in the northern hemisphere
I’m also obsessed with auto locking when the driver leaves a car - which I had in my Renault - I’ve accidentally left my car unlocked so many times!
A GLB or GLC might be better for a family.
Hi guys great review. Just noticed when the car pulled up it does come with 20inch wheels, so I think Andrea may have got it wrong when she said this trim only comes with 19 inch rims?
You are right, I was wrong. It does come with 20" wheels, I didn't see it on the site at first. They are optional for $1,475
Great review, but where you got the fuel economy? My 2019 mainly Vancouver to Chilliwack speed 100 to 115 lowest I got 9.5.
The Volvo is very smooth.
@@andreaspencer9813 Thank you for your great response.
@@stephengriffin4990 You are very welcome!
Great looking SUV. No doubt.
Thanks for reviewing this product. I’m in the market for a compact utility and am torn between CX5 or making the jump up to the XC40/Q3.
They are all great vehicles, excellent value with the CX5 and you can get the Signature trim with the turbo engine.
Glad we could help!
Enjoyed your review. The Volvo is a bit of chunky styling. Too much for me. However, I am considering it and the Audi. I am leaning towards the Audi though.
Thinking about this to replace the Jaguar E-Pace. I like the E-Pace but I'm a little scared of possible maintenance costs after the lease is up.
Kind of like the shot of the feature set being read out loud with words on screen. Easy to tell.
Oh good, thank you for this, glad you like it. I think you are talking about Key Standard Features?
You are great !! Thanks alot 🌹❤️👍
The XC 40 is the best one!❤
The steering wheel weight cab actually be configured as Low medium and high so you can have a heavier steering or lighter.
