Should You Carry Your 1911 Cocked & Locked?

- Today viewers, the dynamic duo do a thing and test cocked & locked carry against other methods of carrying a 1911. How will end? Probably not well, but what's more important is the friends we made along the way.
In all seriousness, carry your 1911 cocked and locked.
In the Marine Corps, until we got the M9, the 1911 was routinely carried with a loaded magazine and hammer down on an empty chamber. I do remember carrying cocked and locked was the policy at an armory I worked at, but that was the exception. But that’s just my experience.
That’s the first time I have ever seen anyone attempt to fan the hammer on a 1911! Wyatt Earp would be proud. Good stuff.
I flinched. So dangerous. At least use the safety notch.
My Israeli 2 cents. I carry Israeli style for civilian everyday carry, I rather have the peace of mind of not having a chambered round. In hot zone I might do cocked and locked for my secondary depends on the threat level. I find that the time difference between condition 1 and 3 does not justify the risk for me. I have timed 1.1 vs 1.3. But in combat you might not have your second hand available (or at all) and that is the decisive factor in my opinion. Thanks for the video guys.

Always enjoy watching you guys, but... duh, cocked and locked for 1911. If one is not willing to do that, they should stick to plastic euro guns

1940 US Army manual, page 19, called for loaded magazine and empty chamber. When in hostile circumstances, carry cocked and locked. The manual says do not carry with hammer down on live ammo.
I am referring to the original Patent comments that DO note the gun is meant to be carried with a hammer down on the chamber- MANY years before 1940. I have never spoken with a veteran who ever carried cocked and locked, save the SF/Delta guys.
The first sentence got my subscription. I've carried a cocked & locked gov't model 1911 in .45acp every day for almost 40 years and will carry one that way until they put my dead body in the ground. That's how I was taught to carry a fighting man's pistol. Have a blessed day. Take care.

My grandfather served in ww2 and used the 1911/45. He said he always carried with the hammer cocked and locked...

When I was in we shot one handed. The hammer was cocked on presentation. It wasn’t a primary weapon. When you knew something was up, our term was cocked and locked for pistols and locked and loaded for rifles. The hammer down wasn’t for speed obviously, it was to make the pistol like a SAA. You know safe. Ha! Anyway, Cocked and Locked is the safest method of carry and has been so for many decades. Fun video. Thanks

Loaded chamber, hammer down? That is inviting an AD or ND. Hammer down on an empty chamber? - May as well be carrying a rock with you. I’ve carried 1911s in condition one - cocked and locked - for 20 years. It’s safe and effective. But Tupperware pistol aficionados need to practice disengaging the safety. You can rest assured that the only way I’ll carry my new Prime Elite is in Condition 1!
Yeah I would presume (as I don’t have one of their guns) a series 70 gun. Letting the hammer down on a round is just asking for a ND when something smacks the hammer or enough pressure is put on it. Sketchy for sure.
If you aren’t carrying a 1911 cocked and locked you definitely need to be carrying a different gun until you get more training!
I feel the same way about carrying a defensive shotgun without a round in the chamber.......All of my guns are always loaded, and my mags are also.

Your HIP is a JOINT created from the top of your FEMUR where it pivots in the pelvis. It's about 10 inches below where you pointed. Or the very bottom line of the target.

Cooper's book shows how to do the "Israeli carry" (although I don't think it calls it that)..
I would like to see a gunsmith talk about cocked and locked carry. We all know that the gun has safeties but what do the safeties do to the mechanism and can external events defeat the safeties? Long ago I read of a sheriff who had a discharge when his holstered handgun got caught in the rungs on the back of a chair. Was the story BS? Can external actions on the hammer bypass the internal mechanisms of the safety?
In the mid 1970s, we, USMC, carried empty chamber, hammer down and cooper wire/lead seal around the hammer, so none of us would chamber a round. If we did the cooper wire would be broken.
The Israeli carry came about because. When the State of Israel was formed in 1948. They had all kinds of different types of handguns. They decided the simplest form of carry was to have every pistol carried with an empty chamber. Then charge the pistol as you pulled it from the holster.
Old school shooter and IPSC shooter since the 80s. IMO cocked and locked is the only way to carry a 1911. Any other way is wrong .
Also, maybe I'm too old fashioned. But appendix carry in kydex holsters sucks and is uncomfortable. Strong side carry in leather holsters all the way.
Agree on cocked and locked…. But appendix is much faster and easier to conceal for me
My wife watches, she thinks you are both a cute couple! No judgement zone here. Now the million dollar question, is ACW going to offer something for the poors? Like a USGI spec model, something that requires minimal hand-fitting to keep the cost down below 2K and preferably something in the 1.5K price range? Is this even realistic today? Remember, John Moses Browning was a man of the people!

Sorry you are wrong, I do understand that cocked and locked it the normal/proper way, I personally like to carry it in the quarter cock condition, and it still only takes 1 hand to be ready to shoot.
I carry cocked and locked. An old timer showed me he carries half cocked with the safety not engaged, obviously. So when he pulls the gun he pulls the hammer back the rest of the way. Whats your thoughts?
Carrying Half cocked makes no sense vs hammer down. After attempting to draw on various ways of carrying I am even more convinced cocked and locked is the way to go…. The other ways just suck

Use your support hand thumb, been practicing it during dry fire with my 226 for a while now. Works superb and you don't have to adjust your grip from the draw.

Never meant to cock and lock Maybe in a trench with firing pin with a spring it’s safe on loaded chamber hammer down the middle safety will catch the hammer if thumb slips that’s what the middle safety is for
