    Am I the only one who wonders how bad/dangerous mukbangs are to your body. Coming from someone who has struggled with binge eating a mukbang seems like a glorified binge.

    • @kaiklaarika8943
      @kaiklaarika8943 7 років тому +60

      Ela Chapman Doesn't it depend on how much you eat? Eating SOMETHING in front of a camera while talking is not a binge.

      Kai Klaarika have you seen the amount of food he eats??

    • @elachapman3272
      @elachapman3272 7 років тому +61

      Kai Klaarika A binge is different for everyone because usually it is to do with an individual's personal pain. That being said he does eat a lot more than I would consider a meal. It is also the way he eats the food and like many people on UA-cam who do mukbangs. When I binge I'm so happy/high i eat without tasting the food and I tend to eat lots in one go. Sometimes him and other youtubers eat like this when doing mukbangs they don't saver or almost enjoy their meal they just eating at immense speed like a lot of binge eaters do (they eat almost exactly the same as I do when I binge) It's also really damaging for your health. No ones stomach can cope with being stretched out in that short space of time and your electrolytes get so fucked up.
      I don't know the man but it really worries me the way he seems to do a mukbang everyday and how he eats. If he's doing a mukbang almost everyday there's no way he could be eating three meals a day, he would have to fast some of the day to save room for the mukbang and then he wouldn't be able to eat for hours after. And if he is eating "normally" after a mukbang he must be making himself sick in order to do so otherwise it's physically impossible.
      I know this may sound like a reach but I think mukbangs are so dangerous mentally/physically. I also don't understand how people watch them and don't find a problem with them. A mukbang is basically a glorified binge and it's so worrying that people make money putting their health at risk for others entertainment.

    • @elachapman3272
      @elachapman3272 7 років тому +30

      Kai Klaarika I also forgot to say that in my opinion even if someone is filming them self binge it's still a binge. I've binged in front of family members before without realising that doesn't mean it wasn't a binge just because I haven't locked myself away in private to do so.
      (Also I hope I don't come across hateful or that you think I'm having a go at you I just really hate mukbangs)

    • @seannaseanna
      @seannaseanna 7 років тому +3

      Ela Chapman yeah but you can do intermittent fasting to eat a large meal and lots of people prefer eating that way. Doesn't matter how many meals you have each day as long as you're getting right amount of calories and nutrients.

    What scares me is that someone can be fully vegan for so long but doesn't understand the basic philosophical and ethical concepts. This dude's video is exactly why I get worried every time I meet a vegan who's doing it for health reasons. Not because it isn't healthy, but because they don't understand the most important important concepts about suffering and ethics, esp in the modern first world. Loved this video. Hopefully this channel becomes one of the popular vegan channels.

    • @MartianBlues11
      @MartianBlues11 7 років тому +35

      Sarah Boka
      It isn't that they don't understand it. It's that they don't agree.
      They comprehend why you hold an opinion regarding ethics but just because they understand it doesn't mean that they feel the same way.

    • @bo_trilly
      @bo_trilly 7 років тому +30

      MartianBlues That may be the case for some (very few I'd argue), but the arguments that this guy made in his video demonstrated a lack of understanding. Further, there are very few people in general who would simply disagree that animal cruelty is wrong or that needless killing is wrong. Most people freak out when they see a dog being mildly mistreated. The problem is logical inconsistency exacerbated by shitty social norms, not preference or opinion.

      Im slowly transitioning to the vegan lifestyle, but solely for health reasons. I couldn't care less if someone wants to eat a hamburger or chicken or deer, etc. I see animals as inferior and if someone wants to hunt deer for a food source, then by all means..

    • @ideljenny
      @ideljenny 6 років тому +7

      Sara Boka The reason why people freak out seeing a dog mistreated but will eat chicken without a second thought is not a problem of a logical inconsistency but rather that we humans have problems relating to things we do not see ourselves. There is a quite famous thought experiment explaining this;
      You are on a high-speed train. In front of the train in the distance on the tracks are 5 people who you will hit and kill if you continue in the same direction. In order to save these people, you'll have to pull a lever that will make the train chance course onto another track. On this track is a person too. Just one though. You've less than 2 seconds to decide, will you pull the lever?
      Most people will and they will make this decision fast and without guilt. This is normal. Now consider this;
      You are on the side of the tracks, a train is coming with high speed and will hit and kill 5 people. In front of you is a really big person, big enough to stop the train if you'd push this person onto the tracks. Would you give this person a hard shove? Think about it and make a decision.
      Well, if you're like most people alive you'd have a lot more trouble making this decision, taking an actual second to make up your mind. This is normal and supposed to be this way. Only people lacking empathy make both decisions with the same speed and ease. Now how is this related to people having no problem with eating meat but can't stand seeing a puppy being murdered? It is the same exact thing. Witnessing a thing and/or participating first-hand makes it personal and therefore people will get upset. With most supermarket meats no one ever sees or has to participate in the slaughtering and cleaning of the animal. This makes it nearly impossible to feel actual empathy towards the animals as individuals. Despite how bad this sounds, this is emotionally healthy human behavior. People who do kill their own meat usually have learned how to compartmentalize and prevent themselves from projecting themselves on the animal. Again, this is also healthy human behaviour.
      The fact that we farm and eat chickens but not dogs is completely cultural, however. People with pet chickens will often have no problem eating supermarket chicken. People in general, with or without dogs, will object to eating dogs.

      I live in Japan, so we eat a base of brown rice and legumes (we often put rice and azuki beans in the rice cooker, and we also eat a lot of fermented soy) for carbs and protein. Then the veggies for vitamins, nuts&seeds for omega3, and a b12 supplement (it has been recently discovered that duckweed contains b12, so it may be a good option for those who hate supplements). I've been a vegan since I was a kid, and never thought much about it, but if you're consuming enough calories and getting some variation on the veggies you eat, I believe you should be OK.

      Also a majority of the supplements I've seen here are "beauty supplements". They do have regular, like just normal, supplements but they're either combined with d3 or give way too few tablets.
      So far I've managed by eating Chinese cabbage, broccoli and unhulled sesame seeds. But I'd still prefer that little bit of insurance.

      Also nuts are just too crazy expensive. It's actually quite funny when I see vegan UA-camrs be all like "here, I made a pasta bake with cashew cheese" and I sit there like "how are you not super poor? where is this magic money that you summon from in order to purchase these expensive nuts?"

      The one problem I had with this whole situation and it's hard to explain and he kind of touches on it in his video but like you can't force someone to be vegan. No one was holding a gun to his head saying BE VEGAN. I mean, especially since he's in the public eye, it could be embarrassing to be like nevermind all of a sudden but you made the choice to make yourself a public person. I could care less if this guy is vegan, I'm sure some of his vegan fans are upset or disheartened that he decided to quit but nobody was forcing him to do anything and that's what is frustrating about this.

Perhaps even the ripple effect she started by being recognized as a beacon of hope is enough to deserve acknowledgment, even if it inspired just one person to go out of their way to do a little bit more than usual. To what standard is one to hold themselves, if nowadays even just giving spare change to the homeless without saying a world is commendable, yet taking abandoned babies and the dying off the streets is to be frowned upon?

      Hayley Croke I totally agree - making any major life change based on moral and ethic can wreak havoc on a person, but I do think he is making too big of a deal out of this without taking the most simple approach. He needs to fix what he is currently eating. Every day he posts videos (sometimes twice a day) of massive meals of nothing but processed, chemically refined foods. Fake cheese, mock-meats, refined grains (pasta) and deep fried fast food. No one could be healthy and happy on a diet like that regardless of being vegan or not. He needs to fix that before blaming his current state on being vegan. He talks about vitamin deficiencies, well no wonder when he only eats the same three things over and over - white pasta, fake cheese, simulated meat. Hopefully Unnatural Vegan can help point him in the right direction :)

      Fortified mock meats are actually pretty good for you, in moderation. In Australia we have a brand which is all fortified with B12, Zinc...and I can't recall the other one/two. Steve Steven I'm vegan too, but where do you get your iodine from? I eat iodized salt, but recently a pharmacist who works with a PhD pharmacologist told me that iodine is in too low amounts in salt, and the amounts in seaweeds are unpredictable. He told me I should buy his iodine supplement pills, but I don't know if I should believe him, since I know he's trying to sell me stuff. Years ago I would drink a glass of water with a single drop of iodine in it that would drop myself from a bottle of iodine supplement I bought at a health food store.

    • @celinak5062
      @celinak5062 7 років тому +4

      Moondog half a teaspoon of salt would get you enough iodine, the only problem with seaweed is you might get to much and of course the cyanide in seafood in general, but it takes a lot before that becomes a problem.
      The harved study your doctor was talking about mainly concerned americans on SAD who already get to much salt from processed food and instead of saying they should cut back and only get salt from a home cooked meal, suggest getting iodine from seafood and multivitamins.

    • @moondog7694

    • @celinak5062
      @celinak5062 7 років тому

      Moondog that's true, but the authors didn't seem to think people would cut back enough on that non-iodized salt containing food and adding any salt(even iodized salt) was therefore too much of a risk.
      I simply disagree with this point, and think you should be honest to your patients and therefore tell them not to eat any junk food, still adding where else to get iodine from, their patients might just not like salt or insist on not listening to their doctor, which only works if the doctor isn't condescending.

      Clearly he wanted fame and money. Based on his brief messages with Freelee before he did this she apparently mentioned some stuff about Trisha Paytas (and she is obviously a popular junkfood binge eater who has controversy too) so it's not surprising this was the outcome, I think that if being a vegan had given him the same level of popularity on youtube he has now then he would have stuck to being a rawfood vegan even if that led to bad health too. I'm pretty sure the only reason he's a morbidly obese muckbanger still now is because of the views it gets him. I can't say if he started out with better intentions but It's definitely clear he wanted the same fame/money other rawfoodists enjoy by the point he made this video.
      I can say this for him at least, I don't exactly blame him for buckling with the vegan eating, I've caved a few times because of poor eating habits, when your body is crying out for calories and you limit your choices too much then shitty, unethical food starts to look damn tasty. Eating properly and enough to curb those feelings is vital to keep on the vegan train long term.

    I'm unfortunately currently an ex-vegan (I'm vegetarian currently with loose restrictions on dairy and eggs, I know, I'm sorry cows and chickens) and his arguments are total nonsense. Just because you want to eat meat and some animals eat it doesn't mean that that makes it okay and ethical. Like what? Also just because there are smart omnivores doesn't mean that they're immune to ghastly logical fallacies. I can understand eating meat due to apathy, but trying to justify it is just wow so interesting.

    • @oleksiy4618
      @oleksiy4618 7 років тому +26

      I think it's important that non-vegans speak up in favor of veganism. Your pro-vegan message might be better received than if a vegan expressed it. I can imagine someone thinking "Hmm, even people who eat animal products recognize that it's unethical, so maybe there is something to it after all". Most of us (unless we're dishonest) do things that we think are unethical sometimes; even (gasp) vegans are guilty of this. The point is not to reach any baseline, but to continuously seek out ways one can improve. That's what veganism means for me.

    • @anotherireidal4152

      How is it any less ethical then from a lion killing a zebra? (Also don't bring up those slaughter houses where cows being kept in spaces smaller then their body. Where I live, most cows live free range or at least are fed grass from the ground, so please have that mindset)
      I do not mean to antagonize a vegan diet, I'm just confused as to why people think simply eating meat is unethical.

    • @alluneedislessthan3
      @alluneedislessthan3 7 років тому +21

      RabbitLovesYou because unlike lions we do not need meat to survive or even thrive. We only eat meat because it tastes good. By killing animals for food we are causing a lot of unnecessary harm to sentient life forms that can perceive pain and suffering.

    • @oleksiy4618
      @oleksiy4618 7 років тому +13

      Apart from complete lack of necessity to consume meat, there's also moral agency at play here. How is raping, murdering, and killing one's step children less ethical than lions doing it to each other? Precisely because we can *recognize* the harm and its undesirability. It is inconsistent to use the "lions" argument in some contexts while rejecting it in others. It should be rejected all over because it's really just an appeal to nature fallacy in disguise. RabbitLovesYou

    • @SpaceRobot05

      Speak for yourselves. Many of us who quit being vegan/vegetarian and went back to eating meat didn't do it because we just like how it tastes. We did it because we feel healthier including it in our diets. The paleo community is full of people trying to recover their health and vitality after years, sometimes decades, on plants-only diets that left us overweight, feeling sick and miserable, or dealing with chronic illnesses and digestive problems.
      And no, not everyone who fails to thrive on such diets simply "did it wrong." Different bodies, different needs.

    OMG Swayze, I love you. Thanks for the help. :) But there are many people who do follow a whole foods plant based diet with beans and legumes and supplements etc, and still fail. What do you you say to them? I did it for a year before going raw, and than another year after being raw. I now understand that raw food diets are pseudoscience; but what I gather from your videos, the only people I've seen you recommend are Jack Norris and Ginny Messina. So are you telling us we can only trust 2 people on this planet? That only 2 people know what they're talking about? That Dr. Fuhrman is wrong, that Dr. McDougall is wrong, that Dr. Greger can cherrypick studies, that Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is wrong about fats, etc. The people you are saying are "wrong" have medical degrees. You do not. Shouldn't that ring a bell for us, too? It's the same concept in that it seems biased, depending upon what's working for you personally and what you want to believe is right. At one point in time, you used to recommend Don for having the most sound information on a healthy diet; now, you're fully against his recommendations. I'm not saying you "flip-flop," I'm just saying that people tend to recommend particular diet information, based on what's CURRENTLY working for them; that can always change (and it has for you already). I agree that many studies came out to the consensus that RED meat can be harmful in excess, but it's still the vast, vast minority. If this was so much easier and normal, you'd be able to recommend more than 2 people (or even 100 people) who know what they're doing. The reason I mentioned my bird competing for food is because vegans commonly say, "We are related to primates; therefore we should eat like them;" when primates will eat each other at times! You said to add a little canola oil to foods, but if you are talking about "sticking to the general consensus," the consensus says that canola oil is terrible for humans, that it's trash. I'm just so confused. Also, I would love to hear you talk about heme iron... Again, I love your perspective. (edit: I mentioned you in my video, which I recorded 2 days ago, saying that I admire your work).

      Actually it isn't bullshit. Wild plants are very different to the domesticated varieties we eat today. Any proper vegetable gardener like myself continues this process which has been going on for a few thousands of years. Basically you collect seed from the best plants with the characteristics you want each year and that overtime changes the plants towards those characteristics. For example originally bananas were full of large seeds. They have been selectively bred now not to and are now at a point they have no seeds so have to be grown from cuttings instead

    hi...I recently transition to plantbased vegan diet, and I am diagnosed with gout. My doctor suggested that I should restrict high purine food (nuts, spinach, cabbages and some legumes to name a few). I read an article on Mayo clinic website that purine content in plantbased food are still allowed. this kinda confused me...Do you think I should restrict or could continue eating those food?

  • @LitcheTheArsm
    @LitcheTheArsm 7 років тому +14

    here i am commenting on the smallest most insignificant part of the video (i agree with everything else you pointed out and you did gret job delivering the facts!)
    one argument against eating eggs from rescue hens is that they lose so many key nutrients when laying eggs and therefore the only right way to use their eggs is to crack 'em in pan, throw in some dark leafy greens, make an omelette and give it to the hens! :) hens used to eat their unfertilized eggs before but now they never get to keep them. D:

    • @MartianBlues11
      @MartianBlues11 7 років тому +4

      LitcheTheArsm
      They would lay the eggs regardless of whether or not you used them though. And if you weren't there, they wouldn't be getting your omelette so it wouldn't make any difference if you took them.
      (I'm not arguing that anyone should actually eat eggs. Frankly, I hate eggs)

    • @LitcheTheArsm
      @LitcheTheArsm 7 років тому +3

      they would probably start eating them since that's what they're supposed to do? and if you keep rescue hens, the whole point is that you take care of them and are supposed to provide them proper nutrition. idk a more cheap and easy way to make sure they don't end up deficient.

    • @MartianBlues11
      @MartianBlues11 7 років тому

      LitcheTheArsm
      If there is a rooster around then the eggs would get fertilized and wouldn't be eaten. That's the point I'm making.
      You could feed your chickens a number of foods to replenish nutrients without them eating the eggs.

    • @LitcheTheArsm
      @LitcheTheArsm 7 років тому +1

      ofc only if there's no rooster around (and i don't understand why a vegan would want to breed farm animals..) i said it's the cheapest way. (: since they're making the food themselves.

    Hey swayze! I really wanted to thank you for making this video, it cleared up a lot of doubts that were getting hold of me. Now, i am not a vegan but i am looking into it. I do not mean to bash nick by saying this, but his points did get to me and made me wonder what is really right or wrong foodwise. I think diets such as rawtillfour or the potato diet and whatnot are basically bs, but i would really find insightful for you to do a video talking about vitamin K2 for example. I am also really looking forward to your DHA and EPA video. THANK YOU for your time and have an awesome day :)
